For this one, tapes have been combined from San Francisco and Philadelphia. My tapes have the announcements by Kid Leo (formerly of Cleveland's WMMS-FM).  Sam Eliot's Mustache's tape didn't have the tape flips mine had, so we merged the tapes, cut out the commercials, and here you go.  I left in the bit of "local" from KFOG's John Grappone.

There's a good chance you're already familiar with this broadcast, as it was bootlegged multiple times.  Italy's Kiss The Stone label released it as "The Boss Is Back" back in '92...and Discogs shows nine songs pressed up on clear vinyl in 2021.  So it's been out there for decades.

What can we bring to Our Beloved Audience that adds to the story?

My goal is to reproduce the broadcast, not produce a bootleg.  You get Kid Leo, and the unidentified  Album Network announcer reciting the production credits. I've left in our local disc jockey John Grappone wrapping up the show and transitioning back to local content.  I didn't include it, but the first song he played after the show was "Born To Run."

I've got a folder of newspaper clippings for you to peruse and ponder as you play the program. We've got Robert Hilburn's review of the concert, plus an interview he did with Springsteen. There are short blurbs from newspapers mentioning the "poor sales" of Human Touch and Lucky Town.

In the four years since the 1988 Tunnel of Love Tour, Springsteen bought 4 1/2 acre "estate" in the Hollywood Hills, fired the E Street Band, dumped his wife Julianne Phillips and married backup singer Patti Scialfa.  There were rumblings in the press about whether he could compete with competition like Def Leppard.

The show itself was at Hollywood Center Studios at 1040 North Las Palmas Avenue in Los Angeles. This is a complex of multiple stages in large barn-like buildings.  Shows shot there include I Love Lucy, Jeopardy, and Pee Wee's Playhouse.

This was a small venue, different to the sports stadiums of recent tours.  About 250 people watched "the dress rehearsal," 100 of which were winners of a contest and flown in to Los Angeles for the show.  I haven't found any details of the contest.

The broadcast went out to 230 radio stations via satellite, live in Australia and South America, and rebroadcast on June 13th in Europe.  In some markets, two rival stations carried the concert.
