Mr. Bungle were known for their distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of their songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up and an array of cover songs. An ongoing feud with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis escalated in the late 1990s, with Kiedis removing Mr. Bungle from a number of large music festivals in Europe and Australia.
Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Danny Heifetz, and Clinton "Bär" McKinnon on saxophone and woodwinds.

Critic Steve Huey wrote in Allmusic "Mr. Bungle is a dizzying, disconcerting, schizophrenic tour through just about any rock style the group can think of, hopping from genre to genre without any apparent rhyme or reason, and sometimes doing so several times in the same song."

Most people haven't heard of Caterwaul. Betsy Martin's voice was classic 80's at its best. A fine line between dainty and a howl. Very chilling. I first heard this album after picking up a cutout cassette copy at the local record place. The first song "The Sheep's a Wolf" is an eerie, melodic, layered piece. Its beautifully done. That theme is carried through the rest of the record. These songs haunted me for quite a while. I had never seen any other Caterwaul recordings until doing a little research on this recording. The musicians and recording are top notch. The guitarist reminds me of a slightly heavier version of U2's "Edge" with a interesting jangly echo. The music seems a cross between "The Church" and "The Cult" but vocally though, very unique. Betsy Martin doesn't sound like anyone else. That is what kept drawing me back to listen to this recording again and again during the early '90s. The music here could be from the 70's, 80s or today. That's what makes this great listen even today.

A West-Side blues guitarist of the same graduating class as people like Otis Rush, Sam combined a blazing guitar with a wonderful soulful voice (imagine Sam Cooke with a guitar...) to do some of the best blues to come out of Chicago in the late 60s. His early sides on Cobra, Crash, Chief and Artistic included hits like "All Your Love," "Easy Baby" and "She Belongs To Me." He went on to record a few albums for Delmark that showed the beginnings of a brilliant career that ended up being a major influence on people like Robert Cray. But he died of a heart attack at 32, and we'll never know where Magic Sam might have gone. Magic Sam's Black Magic Blues is a set of brief blues instrumentals that has a few interesting surprises. Foremost among these is the uncharacteristically acoustic fingerpicking showcase "FP Blues," an early recording that shows that the guitarist's Delta blues chops were in order long before he went electric. Nothing else surprises like that, but the rollicking "Scatter Shot," which has the hyperkinetic energy of an early rock & roll side, is even more exciting, and the stomping "West Madison Street Blues" adds an intriguingly funky, New Orleans-style backbeat to an otherwise standard Chicago blues. The 12 brief tracks (half of them coming in under the two-minute mark). Magic Sam's playing is typically excellent throughout.
