Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music!  Heck yeah!

Collective member Just Dave over at The New JDP (LINK:https://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/ ) was given a digitized copy from one of his readers and sent me the files.  I chaptered the files and did research into the concert and found press coverag
e and some pretty bad scans of the CDs.  We do have good scans of the cue sheets, so hurray us! (See how this "collective" works? we've got a team working cross-country on giving you, our Beloved Audience, the best shows, ever!).

As usual, we have some Rock & Roll Mysteries for you, the Voodoo Wagon Beloved Audience (and the New JDP audience) to ponder and peruse and perhaps...even SOLVE!
This guy hated it...

The show was recorded on August 28, 1993, at the R.D.S. Arena in Dublin, Ireland in front of a crowd of 30,000 fans. This concert was the last show for the ZOOROPA ‘93 European tour and it was only fitting it would end in U2's hometown of Dublin. The show was a BIG DEAL at the time; I've included a lot of the press coverage from Irish newspapers.

The coverage has a lot of things lost to the past... Complaints about opening act Marxman using the phrase "Tiocfaidh ár lá" on their debut single. Foster's Lager considering an injunction against Guinness over beer rights at the show, counterfeit tickets, and lots of articles about money.

Anyway...there is a TON of press coverage here, this show was HUGE. It was broadcast live, via satellite, around the world. Westwood One not only advertised the broadcast in the press but published a "teaser" ad on July 9th - seven weeks before the concert - announcing in ALL CAPS "ON AUGUST 28, 1993 THE CONCERT BROADCAST EVENT OF THE YEAR WILL AIR LIVE ON RADIO STATIONS AROUND THE GLOBE."

They didn't name the group, or the venue, you had to figure it out for yourself.

Now...here's the MYSTERY:

What the heck are these CDs?

In 1993 WW1 was using factory pressed CDs, not CD-r's.  We don't have the original discs to examine but the other 1993 WW1 discs I have are glass-mastered
factory pressed CDs, not burned CD-rs.
This begs the question:  Can you record a concert on a Saturday, edit, master, and press it on CD and ship the CDs to radio stations for broadcast six days later the following Friday?

I'm skeptical of such a short turn-around time...plus...this thing has eight national advertisers... lots of moving parts.  Jeez, this stuff was a nightmare when I managed preprint advertising at the local newspaper.  Is the copy released and ready to print?  Anyway...the ONE WEEK turn-around is noteworthy...

And yet we have the basic facts: the concert was on August 28, and the Westwood One show cue sheets claim a broadcast date of September 4th.

The other mystery is WHY?  If you have a worldwide satellite broadcast on Saturday, why repeat the same concert with commercials the following weekend?  Why would you do that?

It is POSSIBLE this was some sort of promotional release... except it makes no sense to put paid national ads on a promotional release.

So...we have a MYSTERY!

Why put out a concert a week after you broadcast the concert by satellite?

One other note:  Westwood One's numbering system at the time was a year, plus the calendar week of the show. It didn't indicate the show was part of a series, so it doesn't work as a catalog number.  There is a Westwood One In Concert 93-36 (Melissa Ethridge) and a Superstar Concert 93-36 (Robert Plant).

This was a repeat of the first broadcast of this show, which was originally on NBC The Source NBC 83-37, broadcast July 8, 9, 10, 1983.  This original broadcast featured custom disc labels and a printed cover, all of which carried the image of the child on the album cover. This later rebroadcast did not come with the fancy packaging.

There is an unusual 3 minute and 21 second section before the encore of audience clapping, hooting, screaming, and whistling until the band starts the final song.  That's not unusual on an actual live broadcast; the radio station has no control over the length of the encore break. On an edited show for syndication, they usually tighten it up and cut right to the final number.  It's even more unusual that this was repeated on the second syndication.

This is a transfer off of my metal MX-S 100 cassettes, which have sat in a box since I recorded them back in 1997.  I've never been a big fan of U2, and to be blunt, recording on expensive metal cassettes probably wasn't necessary because I never listened to the show more than once or twice.  The stadium sound is muddy, instruments are poorly defined, and Bono is in poor voice.

That being said... it was an historic concert.  Spin Magazine ranked it as 7th on their list of the 35 Greatest Concerts of the last 35 Years in 2020.

The collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991 led to armed conflict between the multitude of ethnicities, nationalisms, religions, languages, and ideologies.  It may be apocryphal, but Otto von Bismark's comment "If there is ever another war in Europe, it will come out of some damned silly thing in the Balkans" came to mind.

As the conflicts wound down, U2 became the first major act to play a concert in Sarajevo in several years.  The concert was carried world-wide by satellite.  This version is from San Francisco's KFOG-FM, with the starting and ending of the show handled by the local radio personalities, and the Westwood One portions by in-house personality J.J. Jackson.

There are several bootlegs of this show.  Westwood One also syndicated a rebroadcast of an edited version on April 6, 1998, as In Concert #98-15 show, also tracks appeared on December 19, 1998 as In Concert #98-51 (combined with Hammersmith Palais 1982), and just the 1997 tracks again as #00-35 on August 26, 2000.

The Superstar Concert Series produced a 3-cd set as #97-39.  Discogs has this as "released on Sep 23, 1997" which is impossible as that's the date of the concert itself. The cue sheet does not show a broadcast window.  The Hammersmith/Sarajevo compilation was broadcast again as 02-09 on March 2, 2002.

In keeping with my new policy of giving Our Beloved Audience a big pile of junk to wade through (or delete), there's a bunch of press coverage in the artwork file about the concert, and a sad note about the death of West Coast disc jockey Linda McInnes.

On McInnes... one thing to note about radio here is that disk jockeys often moved between the L.A./San Diego and Bay Area radio markets.  Air fare was inexpensive, the flight time is short (about 70 minutes of flight time).  As there were "network" stations in both markets, if they needed a disk jockey to fill a slot they would have one fly in to cover shifts for a week or two.  McInnes was a regular on Bay Area radio...but also in the San Diego and Los Angeles markets.

Yeah, I did this a month ago but I've been busy with those tapes I mentioned, plus I'm happy to report that the grandson passed his eighth weekly spelling test with a perfect score.

Comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and disc labels.  Flac files of wavs.

This show also appears on BBC In Concert #295, which has one additional song (A Celebration). London Wavelength also repeated these tracks on the BBC Rock Hour #410, with commercials added.

The show has been bootlegged many times, too.

A great sounding concert before U2 went all hypocrite.

Bono speaking in Tokyo last year said: “My prayer is that we become better in looking after our planet.” Meanwhile U2's tour carbon footprint can also be measured in space terms, with their colossal emissions of up to 65,000 tons of CO2 enough to fly Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr from earth to the planet Mars — and back.
