Half Moon Run - Live Give Up Festival, France 2013

Half Moon Run - Live Give Up Festival
Beauregard, France
May 7, 2013
Soundboard @320

Half Moon Run may very well be one of the best Canadian bands you have never heard. Their album, "Dark Eyes", is also one of the most original sounding releases from the Canadian indie music scene during 2012. They mix indie, folk, pop and electronica into this wonderful blend of melodicism & vocal harmonies that are dead on brilliant.
It is clear to see why Half Moon Run are something special. A modern classic! Just listen!

~Undergroundhero

The Plasmatics - Live In Berlin 1981 @224Kbps

LITTLE KNOW FACTS OF ROCK AND ROLL # 47

In my never ending quest to bring you stories of the heroes of R&R here's another

Everyday on his popsicle route, Rob Halford would stock up his truck with his nutty-buddy's, eskimo pies, and fudgesicle's. Cruising down residential streets and neighborhoods, Rob would often think to himself, "These Goddamn little fucks, they're driving me crazy wanting they're sno-cones, and they're dreamsicle's there has got to be a better way."  As his tape loop of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" blasted the quiet silence of Sutton Coldfield England he would sing the words to himself. "Mary Had A Little Lamb....Little Lamb.....Little Lamb." Meanwhile a frustrated young guitarist by the name of Glenn Tipton was rehearsing his young new band. "I don't know" said Glenn "We're almost there but we're still lacking something that will make us stand out as a great heavy metal band." "I'm going to take a little break, go outside have a fag and then will give it another shot." He said to his band mates. While outside, in the distance he could here Rob's popsicle truck making it's way towards him. He noticed that while he could here the "Mary Had A Little Lamb" song playing he could also here some one singing along to it. "Mar....EEEEE   hod AAAAAA LEETle LAMMMMMMMb" "Wow" Glenn thought to himself "That guy's got a set of pipes on him."  "I wonder who that is." As Rob's truck got nearer he realized it was the driver of the popsicle truck.  "Stop....Stop" Glenn yelled as the truck inched it's way to where he was standing. "Was that you singing along to you're loop?" Glenn asked. "Yeah I'm sorry I get carried away sometimes having to hear this fucking song eight hours a day." Rob responded.  "No..No that was great." said Glenn. "I've got a little band, trying to get something together here and you might be just the thing we need." "Would you like to come in and try it out with us?" Glenn inquired. "Well" said Rob "I'm a bit behind on my schedule today, but what the hell I'll give it a shot." "Then come on in.and see what the others think" said Glenn. "Oh and one more thing" Glenn continued. "I'll have a Klondike bar."   AND THE REST IS HISTORY.  See scans.

The Tubes - Kabuki Theatre, S.F. Westwood One In Concert #84-13

The Tubes
Kabuki Theatre, San Francisco, CA
Westwood One In Concert #84-14
Airs 7/6 - 7/8 (....in 1984)
most likely recorded on September 17, 1983

This same show was also broadcast earlier in February '84 by Westwood One as In Concert #84-03.  The cue sheet of #84-03 lists Track 31 as "Drums," while on the cue sheet for In Concert 84-14, it's listed as "Baby Hector's Lament." I can't find a song by that name in the Tubes' discography, but as it's on the cue sheet I'm listing is as "Baby Hector's Lament."

A portion of this show was broadcast on MTV, missing the tracks "Amnesia", "Mondo Bondage", "Don't Want To Wait Any More" and the "James Brown Medley," but with the inclusion of "White Punks On Dope" (not on the Westwood One broadcasts).  The "James Brown Medley" isn't listed on the cue sheet, but I've listed it here as part of the track "Tip Of My Tongue."

The first two Budweiser commercials are by A Flock of Seagulls and Joe Jackson, and presumably the third commercial is also by a "name" artist, but I don't recognize the singer or group. Joe Jackson really puts his heart into it, too.  If anyone can identify the group or singer on that third commercial, I'd appreciate it.

Scans of the cue sheet and a disc label are included; flac files of wavs.

Randy Hansen - Return Of The Band Of Gypsys With Buddy Miles Live 12-27-84 @192 Kbps

*FOR V.C. SOMEWHERE ON THE ASTRO-PLAINS OF VENUS *44 YEARS TODAY

Little known facts of Rock and Roll #19
David Crosby was house sitting for Joni Mitchell (who was away on tour) at her sprawling Laurel Canyon house. Present at this early hour of the morning were Crosby, Bob (The Bear) Hite, and a very inebriated Jim Morrison. Crosby was talking to Bob about the show he had witnessed the previous night. We join this tape in progress. Crosby: "And man when he hit the high note of You Gave Me A Mountain man I almost cried"  Bob: "I've always liked that song, and Marty Robbins does it so much better than Jim Nabors" Crosby: "I know man and then when I asked if I could go and meet him backstage man and the doorman said sure but you know I require head, I dropped down on both knees man" Bob: "Wow so you got to meet him then?" Crosby: "Yeah man and let me tell you the man is bigger in person than he is on stage man"  At this time Morrison descends from the staircase with a bottle of Jack Daniels in his right hand.  Bob: "Ah c'mon Jim put some goddamn pants on, nobody wants to see that shit at this time of the morning"  Morrison: (unintelligible)  Crosby: "Let me roll another joint man"  Bob: "Hey I noticed when I came up to the front porch this morning there's a great big marble statue of the Venus De Milo, Joni didn't have that last time I was here, where did that come from?"   Crosby: "I bought that for her at a yard sale man"  At this time Morrison reemerges from the stairway with his leather pants on backwards.  Morrison: "Hey Bob (unintelligible)"  Bob: "Damn that statue looks mighty heavy, how did you get it here?"  Crosby: "We put it on the roof of Neil's Vdub man.It caved the fucker in on the drive man"  Bob: "Well how did you lift it and put it by the doorway?"  Morrison: "Yeah how'd you(unintelligible)"  Crosby: "Shit man, I lifted it and put it there man"  Bob: "Bullshit that fucker has to weigh at least 600 pounds"  Morrison: "Yeah that fucker has to weigh(unintelligible)" Crosby: "What, you don't think I can lift it man?"  Bob: "No way"  Morrison: "Yeah no(unintelligible)"  Crosby: "O.K. man, let's go outside and I'll show you man"  At this time the crew gathers themselves and walks out to the front yard. Crosby: Man Bob, I can't believe you don't think I can lift this"  Bob: "Careful don't hurt yourself"  Morrison: "Yeah careful you don't(unintelligible)  Crosby: "O.K. let me spit on my hand man and I'll show you man" At this point in the tape some very loud grunting is heard.  Crosby: "Ow goddamn man I think I pulled my groin man"  Bob: "Should we call an ambulance?"  Morrison: "Yeah should we call (unintelligible)  At this point the tape runs out and we can only speculate what transpired afterwards.  See scans

Desert Rose Band / The Ritz, NYC Westwood One Presents #L89-35

This is digitized from the syndicated radio disc as flac files of wavs. Unfortunately it didn't have the cue sheet with it.  I wasn't familiar with the Desert Rose Band, but it's a Chris Hillman  (Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers) and Herb Petersen (Dillards) project.

On the country charts, Summer Wind was a #2, I Still Believe In You a #1, Love Reunited a #6, and She Don't Love Nobody a #3.  I also found the sound of "Start All Over Again" intriguing, as they're using a chorus delay pedal more typical of rock bands like the Cure.

Larry, a reader of this blog, left some great comments that far surpass my ability to discuss this band, so I'm going to quote them here:

"The DRB was one of the best country/rock bands of the '80s and early 90s.  Herb Pederson is the harmony voice on literally hundreds of the best country-flavored records of the late '60s and most of the '70s, singing with everyone from the original Burrito Brothers to Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor and on and on.  In the days before Auto Tune, producers called Herb to "sweeten" the vocals.  He WAS the SoCal vocal harmony sound.  Guitarist John Jorgensen did a lot of experimental stuff (for country at least) on guitar.  He's also the best American Django Reinhardt-style player AND he has served as Elton John's lead guitarist.  He's also a wiz at swing clarinet and can play soulful B3 organ.  He is NOT human, far as I can tell.  If you don't know Chris Hillman's amazing story, go to Wiki right now.   The DRB was incredible and when they reunite, they still can be. Check them out." - Larry

In closing, I'll mention that while I was researching the DRB and "Westwood One Presents" on the Internet (checking to see if this was already out there....), I saw a torrent of a 1987 broadcast with a different track listing, and a 1990 broadcast with an unknown track listing (might be the same as this show...).  There is also a "Live From Gilley's show with a set list that's identical to the 1987 "Presents" show.

Chicago / Greek Theatre, Los Angeles 1978, Supergroups In Concert

Chicago
Greek Theater, Los Angeles
Supergroups In Concert
Broadcast date of May 12, 1979 (Premiere broadcast of SuperGroups...)
Recorded August 11, 1978

Band Line Up:
Robert Lamm
Peter Cetera
Donnie Dacus
James Pankow
Walter Parazaider
Lee Loughnane
Danny Seraphine
Laudir de Olivera
Orchestra conducted by William "Bill" Conti.   From Wikipedia:  "...an American composer and conductor best known for his film scores, including Rocky (and all but one of the five sequels), For Your Eyes Only, and The Right Stuff, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score."

Chicago SuperGroups In Concert was the first "SuperGroups" syndicated broadcast on May 12, 1979.  The show was pressed on three LPs, but only five sides had music.  The sixth side is blank.  The cue sheet lists the show as a production of American Broadcasting Companies.  There's an ad in Billboard on Aug. 18, 1979 that says 300 ABC stations carried the show, so that may be a good guess as to how many copies of this show were pressed.

The Chicago disc labels are numbered with the catalog number OCC 101.  The next SuperGroups show I've identified is Foreigner, which used the code OCC and either 201 or 203 (I've seen both listed, so consider that number unconfirmed). The Foreigner show was identifed as broadcast on May 19, 1979 but is not mentioned in the Billboard ad...

...Which says the next show in the series was the Moody Blues.  With the Moody Blues show, the series used a different code:  The Moody Blues were SGC 101, followed by the Allman Brothers SGC 102, Peter Frampton SGC 103, the Cars SGC 104, Blondie SGC 105, Cheap Trick SGC 106, Journey SGC 107 and Alice Cooper SGC 108.

The earliest of these shows were distributed in boxes, with similar cover designs.  The background of each box was a solid color covered in a pattern of dots, with the artist's name on the front and the show credits on the back.  The cue sheets were printed on premium paper, and the discs housed in plastic-lined disc sleeves.  Occasionally they "themed" the color of the box: The Moody Blues box is blue, and Blondie is yellow.

The original SuperGroups format had live concerts interspersed with short interviews, and no commercials.  A "SuperGroups Theme Song" played at the beginning and end of the show.   At least two of the shows (Foreigner and Alice Cooper) combined previously unreleased live material with several "faked" tracks from studio albums overdubbed with audience noise.

Sometime in 1980 they dropped the premium presentation (boxes, cue sheets, disc liners) and added prerecorded commercials.  Disc labels switched to a solid color - I've seen red, yellow, and silver used, and the numbering system was discontinued. Some of these are listed as "produced by D.I.R. Broadcasting Corp. for Super Groups In Concert" but also carry the ABC name. Spelling of the shows name often shifts from "SuperGroups" to "Super Groups." There was also a series using the Super Groups name called "A Night On The Road," produced by G.K. Productions with ABC.

This version was digitized from the original syndicated radio discs and declicked in Audacity in September 2014.  Included are 300 dpi scans of the front and back cover, a disc label, and all four pages of the cue sheet.  Flac files of wavs. The only thing I edited out was the 700 Hz test tone.

There's another version circulating with "Mongonucleosis" and "Got To Get You Into My Life" but without "I Just Want To Be Free."  I haven't heard it, so I don't know if was also a SuperGroups show, an original over-the-air broadcast, syndicated by a different company...or perhaps two versions of the show were produced.

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant Free Concert 2000 @128

First off a huge welcome back to our fellow brother Bonger. Second thanks goes out to the Boss.  Through his efforts I have discovered Five Horse Johnson, Earl Greyhound, The Drive-By-Truckers, also The Black Angels.  So to pay him back I'm posting something he may not be familiar with. You may not know of this band either, but I'm suggesting you should. Great great Japanese band here. Great hooks, with a kinda sound like the MC5 meets Johnny Rotten (only not as abrasive) Don't know much about these guys except I guess the guitar player is dead. Most songs are in Japanese with some English occasionally thrown in. I LOVE THESE GUYS. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Sorry no artwork for this and a rather low bit rate but don't let that deter you from getting this. Let me know what you think of this and crank it. I think the songs are:

1.Hair O Baby
2.Citroen No Kodoku
3.Alligator Night
4.Abakareta Sekai
5.God Jazz Time
6.Baby Stardust
7.Rita
8.Turkey
9.Break Hazureta Oreno Shinzou
10.Margret
11.Bird Land Cindy
12. The Red Head Kelly
13. Encore Song(I don't know the name of it)

Bar-Kays / The Time - Budweiser Concert of the Month

As the Budweiser Concert Hour was broadcast twice a month in 1982, the original broadcast date is likely in the Spring of 1982.  The show had been named the Budweiser Concert of the Month prior to changing to the 2x month schedule.

Bar-Kays recorded at the Celebrity Theatre, Phoenix, AZ. February 27, 1981

Tracks from the Bar-Kays show were also released on Budweiser Concert of the Month BC 81-3  The versions of "Body Fever" and "Holy Ghost" are longer on this version.  On BC 81-3, they were cut short so an additional song could be included.

No venue is announced for The Time, but they talk to "Los Angeles" and "L.A." several times during the show.

This version digitized from the syndicated radio disc in July of 2014.  Tags and post updated December 2021.

Tracks from the Bar-Kays show were also released on Budweiser Concert of the Month BC 81-3.  The version of Body Fever on that show was edited down to 3:48, while it is 7:23 on this version (BC 82-8).  Holy Ghost was also edited down from 4:56 to 3:03.  In place of the lost music, BC 81-3 adds "Say It Through Love" to the set list.

J.J. Johnson has a Kindle book available on Amazon (as of July 2014). "AIRCHECK: Life In Music Radio."  J.J. Johnson was a DJ on KDAY in Los Angeles.

All of the songs from The Time's set are drawn from their first album, "The Time" which was essentially a Prince album with Morris Day on lead vocals.  The group did not actually play on their debut album, so this is a chance to here them do 2/3rds of that album live.
