...Probably an upgrade from anything you may have.

Lester Butler (born in Virginia, November 12, 1959 – May 9, 1998) was a blues harmonica player who achieved fame with the Red Devils Blues Band, which backed such notables as Bruce Willis and Johnny Cash in Los Angeles performances. He achieved his greatest fame in the Netherlands, where Lester Butler tribute bands still perform. He had rhythm, melody, and soul … and a classic understated way of putting it all together.

And.... here's Part Two of the Voodoo Wagon Bob Dylan's Birthday Bash!

Bob and Bacall

After I've digitized a radio show, I look for information about the original concert. What else can I bring to the exhumation of a 37 year old radio show besides the vintage commercials?  Were there posters for the concert? Are there tickets on Ebay?  Backstage passes from the tour?

While looking at the Australian newspapers for information on Dylan's February shows, I ran across a letter from "Lauren Bacall, Spring Street, Melbourne."  She was angry about recent press coverage of Bob Dylan.  Given the Australian address, I figured this was not Lauren Bacall, World Famous Actress.  What would she have been doing in Australia?  Plus, THAT Lauren Bacall was born in 1924, she's the same age as my mom... neither of 'em are in the age group that listened to Bob Dylan. (My mom can't stand Bob to this day.  UPDATE: Dec. 13, 2025:  Mom just hit 102, and she still can't stand Bob Dylan.)

Further research revealed that I was wrong; it was Lauren Bacall, Tony Award winning actress, star of stage and screen, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1724 Vine Street (right down the block from the Capitol Records building).  Bacall was in Australia to star in the Tennessee Williams play Sweet Bird of Youth. But why was she so pissed off about the Sydney Morning Herald's coverage of a Bob Dylan press conference?

Earlier in January, she'd had a contentious interview with Evan Whitton of the Sydney Morning Herald.  He didn't like Tennessee Williams ("a piece of overheated Southern toshery"). He asked Bacall to agree with his conclusion that "on any analysis, you are more talented than your late husband."  Whitton disapproved of the "cult" of Humphrey Bogart, wherein young people of the next generation identified with the "detachment...sardonic pessimism and unfailing honor" of his characters in films such as Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.

Ms. Bacall expressed her displeasure at both assumptions, and at the presumption of the journalist that she must agree with him.

The newspaper followed up with a defense of Whitton by his wife, Noela Whitton, which doubled down. There was more criticism of Williams "banalities" and "trite speech after speech."

She did lighten things up by quoting letters to the newspaper, including the "most wonderful letter...from Bradon Ellem, of Thirroul, who not only socked it to Whitton on behalf of Bacall but who was also out there in defence of Bob Dylan, whose press conference Whitton observed in an article published in the Herald on February 13.  Bradon Ellem says, "one day, in a bar in the States, Mr Bob Dylan will say to Ms Lauren Bacall: "Who the hell is Evan Whitton anyway?"  She wrapped the article with a reference to Casablanca and the close "Meanwhile, who, I'd be interested to know, is Bradon Ellem?"

With the two negative articles, it was no surprise Bacall had an ax to grind with the Sydney Morning Herald.  But there's more to the story:

Here's a quote from Heartbreaker keyboards player, Benmont Tench, "In Australia, we check into the hotel the first night, and who checks in at the same time? Lauren Bacall. So we all go down later to the bar, coffee shop, whatever it was. She's down there. Bob had had us learn some standards. He was just like let's learn “Lucky Old Sun,” let's learn this, let's learn that. He had us learn an old standard, [called] “All My Tomorrows.” And I didn't understand those kinds of chords, but we got there. He and I sat down at the piano and played it for Lauren Bacall. And he sang it."

So, when there was another hostile press conference with the Sydney Morning Herald, Ms. Bacall had already been personally serenaded by Bob Dylan, and she came forward, as the paper put it, as "his protector in Australia."

As with a lot of press coverage, an ocean of ink was used arguing about not very much.  In 1997, both Bob Dylan and Lauren Bacall were honored at the Kennedy Center Honors party at the State Department in December 1997, and photographed together.  Whether they asked each other "Who the hell is Evan Whitton" is not known.

We can, however, answer Noela Whitton's question "Who, I'd be interested to know, is Bradon Ellem?"

As per the University of Western Australia website:

"He is a Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, in Perth.  Bradon Ellem is a Professor of Employment Relations in the University of Sydney Business School where he teaches in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs. He was departmental head for five years from 2011."

I sent him an email asking if he still likes Bob Dylan, but have not heard back from him.  If he answers, I'll update this post (and file).

Bob Dylan/Tom Petty
Appearances On Westwood One's Superstar Concert Series

This history covers Bob Dylan's syndicated "concert" appearances on the Westwood One Radio Network.  It does not cover specials featuring studio tracks, or interview shows.

There are four 90 minute "concert" shows by Bob Dylan/Tom Petty on the Westwood One Radio Network. These were compiled from concerts at the Entertainment Center, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (February 24 and 25, 1986), the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA (July 31, 1986), and Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA (August 5, 1986) during the 1986 tour with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Shorter excerpts from these concerts were broadcast on Westwood One "compilation" shows.

Some of the Sydney recordings were used in the U.S. HBO TV Special "Hard To Handle," which was officially released on home video by Dylan.

The original set U.S. set list was broadcast three times:

Superstar Concert SS 86-21 "for broadcast the weekend of August 31, 1986"
Superstar Concert SS 86-03 "for broadcast the weekend of February 21, 1987"
Superstar Concert SS 86-F "for the weekend of December 11-13, 1987" (this show)

The artists are credited on the cue sheets as:

Superstar Concert SS 86-21 "Bob Dylan / Tom Petty"
Superstar Concert SS 87-03 "Tom Petty / Bob Dylan"
Superstar Concert SS 87-F "Tom Petty / Bob Dylan"

The track lists for these three versions are:

Positively 4th Street
All Along The Watchtower
Masters Of War
I'll Remember You
I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know
Bye Bye Johnny
Breakdown
Just Like A Woman
Blowin' In The Wind
That Lucky Old Sun
So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star
Spike
Like A Rolling Stone
Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Tom Petty sings lead vocals on Bye Bye Johnny, Breakdown, So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star, and Spike.

Various sources on the Internet say there was an "overseas version" that drops the Petty tracks and adds three more Dylan songs.  I have never seen a copy of the overseas version on Ebay.  There is no Discogs listing. I did not find any hard proof, such as cue sheet to confirm the existence of the "overseas version."  It is mentioned on several websites that specialize in Bob Dylan, so it is likely to exist.

The overseas version track list I saw runs:

Positively 4th Street
All Along The Watchtower
Masters Of War
I'll Remember You
I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know
Just Like A Woman
Blowin' In The Wind
That Lucky Old Sun
Like A Rolling Stone
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Girl From The North Country
It Ain't Me Babe
When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky

There is circumstantial evidence of the "overseas version."  "It Ain't Me Babe" appeared on a bootleg issued in 1996 named "Hard To Find Volume 4 - Hardest To Find (Lost Diamonds 1986-96)" attributed as "Radio version. From the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA - USA. Released on the Superstar Concert Series Westwood One radio Station disc 7-31-86"

The cue sheet for SS 86-21 says "for broadcast the weekend of August 31, 1986" not July 31 as mentioned on the bootleg, but the "overseas version" might not follow U.S. broadcasts dates.  But whether it exists or not, the three addition tracks were issued on:

Westwood One Superstar Concert 99-06 for broadcast the weekend of February 6/7, 1999.
Note that while Petty sings lead on two songs, the show is credited only to Bob Dylan.  I'll be posting 99-06 later today.

Breakdown (the clue is... Tom says "everyone sings good in California...)

The source of "So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star" is not confirmed at this time. It was not played at Tacoma or Mountain View.  The soundboard of the Sydney show fades in, so I can't check if Bob's distinctive introduction is there or not.

Bob & Tom are on the 1987 Isle of Dreams faux-concert broadcast the weekend of September 5-7, 1987. The songs included are All Along The Watchtower, Masters Of War, and Like A Rolling Stone

Bob & Tom are also on the "Stars of the Superstars Concert Series, 1986" SSCS-87 for the weekend of January 3, 1987. The songs are Spike, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

This version is a pre-FM recording taken directly from the reel-to-reel tapes and presented as part of the Sam Elliot's Mustache Collection.

Flac files of wavs, PLUS a letter introducing the Studio Jam series, a page with Program Information, a copy of the Ad Slick for localized newspaper promotion, and the timing sheet.  Apparently, there was also a "Promo Pak" on the artist but that is missing.

ABOUT THE BAND:
I found a print ad from another concert on the tour that lists some of the band, which was named The Ultra Latex Band.
Pentti Glan (drums)
Steve Hunter (guitar)
Prakash John (bass)
Davey Johnstone (guitar)
Fred Mandel (piano)

ABOUT THE CONCERT:
The Alice Cooper concert at the Sports Arena, San Diego, CA on April 9, 1979 was the source of several releases.  The Studio Jam version was the first that I've been able to identify, with a broadcast window of May 1 to May 15, 1979.

King Biscuit Flower Hour did a broadcast with an air date of June 17, 1979 also sourced from the San Diego show.  This was a 60 minute show distributed on reel to reel tapes, with a few different tracks from the Studio Jam version. The KBFH version adds "Only Women Bleed," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," "Wish You Were Here," "How You Gonna See Me Now," and drops the Interview.

King Biscuit repeated three tracks from San Diego (Go To Hell, How You Gonna See Me Now & School's Out) combined with songs from two other concerts (Los Angeles and Saginaw) on CD for broadcast on June 4-June 10, 1990 and repeated the same set again on July 29 - August 4, 1991.

The San Diego show is NOT posted at Wolfgang's Vault.

The Strange Case of Alice Cooper is a live concert video released in September 1979 on both Betamax and VHS, sourced from the San Diego concert.  It was released on DVD in 2012 by Shout Factory.  Several bootleg releases of both the video exist, and a CD bootleg named Mad House Rock came out in 1991.  It adds one more song to the set, "Inmates (We're All Crazy)."

There's a Japanese CD bootleg from 2019 called San Diego 1979 Broadcast Masters (Shades 1028) that has the Studio Jam version, PLUS the King Biscuit Flower Hour version.

ABOUT THE Studio Jam program:
Studio Jam was a syndicated radio show hosted by Robin Winter and founded and produced by Charles K. "Chip" Altholz in Chicago. The show started out by showcasing in-studio performances, and a couple years later began to feature live performances recorded at various venues in Chicago. Some of the in-studio performances were recorded at Mantra Studios.

Studio Jam Radio Network was a 50-station radio network to produce and barter syndicated radio concerts in trade for airtime. They produced 24 in-studio live radio concerts featuring major rock stars for 17 Major Record Labels (David Bowie, The Police, Kenny Loggins, Styx, Triumph, Doobie Bros., Foreigner, Earth Wind & Fire etc.) They co-produced the concerts with JAM Productions Ltd., and Robert Pittman who later founded MTV.

Alice Cooper is the first show in the 1979-80 season.

I found an article in the Atlanta Constitution of May 11, 1979 announcing that local station WKLS-FM will carry the Studio Jam Cooper concert on Sunday May 13th.  The program director claims "the series will feature Meatloaf, the Cars, Styx, Kansas, Bob Seger, Bad Company, Jefferson Starship, Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, the Kinks, Yes and Eddie Money, among others...."  He adds the series "will eventually be repeated."

I'm not sure how many of those shows were actually produced.  My guess is that at least half of those were never broadcast.

I did find a newspaper listing that the Studio Jam Alice Cooper show was to be broadcast on WBCN in Boston on Sunday July 29, 1979.  That's two months after the original broadcast window.

Wiki says:

PH Live, originally known as Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, is a mid-sized auditorium located at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip.

While this location was known as the Aladdin Hotel, the owners decided to create a performing arts center to replace the mildly used golf course. Planning began in 1969, with concepts showing the venue as a separate building. The center opened on July 2, 1976 (America's bicentennial weekend), with Neil Diamond, who was paid $750,000 for five sold-out shows. During the 1970s and 1980s, the auditorium became a staple on the Strip for many rock and roll acts.

Journey - Chicago, 1979 - Studio Jam radio show - Aragon Ballroom, May 1979

Journey
Studio Jam
For airdates between August 1 and August 15, 1979
Likely recorded at the Aragon Ballroom in May 1979

Studio Jam was a syndicated radio show hosted by Robin Winter and founded and produced by Charles K. "Chip" Altholz in Chicago. The show started out by showcasing in-studio performances, and a couple years later began to feature live performances recorded at various venues in Chicago.

This show comes from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection. Sam transferred this from the original radio station reel-to-reel tape. Sam included a plethora of the original documents sent to the radio stations. There's a two-page Journey biography, a print ad for insertion in local newspapers, a page with Facts and Important Information about the broadcast, and a timing sheet.

What there isn't is information on when and where the concert was recorded. Robin Winter introduces the band, but doesn't mention the venue or date of the recording.  So, I cast my gaze over the Internet to see what I could find.

There are several bootlegs dating back to the 1990s, attributing this as "Comiskey Park, August 9, 1979."  Makes sense.  The production company was based in Chicago at 875 N. Michigan Avenue (the John Hancock Center at the time), and Comiskey is six miles south.

Sounds good, right?  And multiple pressings all with the same date, hey, they must be right?

No, this is the Internet.  People just repeat things and add their own errors. I called up our pal Dr. Strange and asked him to come over to the Voodoo Wagon Secret Headquarters to look at one grey market item.  Doc immediately pointed out that "Corniskey Park" is a load of rubbish.  As to repeating error, the show is now up on YouTube as "Corniskey Park" with tens of thousands of views.  And if they spelled the name wrong, what else is suspect?

Yeah, this is all kinds of wrong...

The next thing I checked was the date.  Surely the date must be correct, even if they spelled the name of the baseball stadium ridiculously wrong.

A quick look at the Wiki for the Evolution tour lists five dates at the Aragon Ballroom (May 16, 17, 18, 19, 20) with a return to Chicago on August 5th at Comiskey Park for the WLUP-FM's "The Loop's Day In The Park." I found newspaper clippings proving the Comiskey concert was on the 5th, not the 9th.  It was a big show, 70,000 people, over 200 arrests, and appearances by Journey, Santana, Thin Lizzy, Eddie Money, and Molly Hatchet. So I thought I had found proof of the date and venue.

Evidence came to light proving that to be wrong.  On the Studio Jam Timing sheet, it says: "For airdates between August 1 and August 15, 1979."

It makes no sense to record a show on August 5th and tell fifty stations they can air it starting August 1.  PLUS...what about production time?  Can you edit, master, and do the tape duplication for the reels, and mail them to the radio stations that fast?  Let's face it, that just can be right.

I went looking for more information and found a blurb in CASHBOX from July 14, 1979, that noted the formation of the Studio Jam Radio Network, with 26 rock concerts scheduled for 47 radio stations.  Journey was listed as "already recorded."

Extra! Extra! Voodoo Wagon
uncovers proof it's not
Cornisky Park!

That is hard printed proof that it's not Comiskey Park (or Corniskey...), and it's not August 5th (or the 9th...).  If they had the show recorded before mid-July, the August date and venue is proven to be wrong.

My guess is that it's from that run at the Aragon Ballroom in May.  I'm suspicious of the five night run; that seems excessive.  I looked for documentation on the number of dates, and there are newspaper listings for the Friday (May 18), Saturday (May 19), and Sunday (May 20) shows. I also found a ticket stub for May 18.  So we know for a fact Journey played three nights at the Aragon in May.

This proves three nights, but
there may have been five nights.

I found a bootleg over at  T.U.B.E. named "Shining In The Silver Moon" that lists the source as Aragon Ballroom, but has the date as May 28, 1979.

The odds are very low that they played three (or five) shows in Chicago and then returned a week later for another show.  One possible source for the May 28 date is that Journey did a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast on May 28, 1978.  That's a year earlier, and that show was sourced from New York, not Chicago.  But all it takes is someone screwing up labeling a show and the next thing you know the grey-market boys are touting a show from Corniskey Park. The KBFH show may have been picked up for the month and day. That's just a speculation, but it makes sense.

As I mentioned, this has been bootlegged before. The complete digitization of the radio show included an eight-minute interview with Steve Perry, and 45 seconds of promotional ads.  These are often left off the circulating tracks.  Sam's version includes them at the end of the show.

There were THREE broadcasts of the Palladium concert in the U.S.A.:
1) the original Starfleet Blair/NBC The Source live satellite radio broadcast on December 31, 1980.
2) The edited NBC The Source NBC 82-6 of Feb. 19, 20, 21 1982 (this show).
3) The edited Captured Live! CL 1283 broadcast on October 10, 1983 (mis-identified by host Perry Stone as being from Providence, Rhode Island).

As I mentioned on Joe Walsh / Dallas show (aired by the Source and King Biscuit), it was unusual for competing networks to carry the same concert.  That may explain why the Captured Live! show is chopped up and reordered and claimed to be from another city.

The Source show closely matches the running order of the full live broadcast, but is missing "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," "C'mon Now," and the closing number "Superman."

The Captured Live! version is missing "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and "Give The People What They Want" but includes "C'mon Now" and "Superman."  The Captured Live! version, though, re-orders the tracks so that it bears no obvious relation to the two other versions.

The broadcast was fraught with drama.  Starfleet Blair originally intended to broadcast the Allman Brothers, but their manager Steve Masursky insisted New York City be left out of the broadcast because the New York affiliate was WPLJ, and the Allmans were loyal to Scott Muni at WNEW.

So Starfleet Blair signed up the Kinks instead.  Three weeks before the show Ray Davies insisted Starfleet not broadcast in New York, Boston, and L.A. and Starfleet threatened a lawsuit.  The Kinks management kicked in money to help cover the national advertising revenue lost, and show went on...but not in New York, Boston, or Los Angeles.

There's a bit of irony in not running the Allman Brothers minus New York but ending up running the Kinks minus New York, Boston, and Los Angeles, but that's show biz for ya.

Even more ironic is the live broadcast boosted sales of the Kinks then current album, "One For The Road," from "3,000 units per week before Christmas to 9,000 a week after the concert."  Sales before Christmas are normally very strong due to holiday gift-giving, so tripling sales is a big deal. How many sales did Ray miss by cutting out a quarter of the national radio audience?

The show was also taped and given to BBC Radio One in England, and also to radio services in the Netherlands and Germany.

A bootleg of this named "Another One For The Road" was issued in Europe in 1997.  It's missing six tracks as compared to the full original broadcast.

Wiki says, "It was a preferred wine
of Queen Elizabeth II"

And can any of Our Beloved Audience provide some details on "Mateus At The Palladium?"  That's printed on the ticket, and the entertainment listing says "Bring your own Mateus."  My guess is the winery was a sponsor of the shows.

But did she like the Kinks?

As usual, I've got a bunch of junk for you to wade through (or delete!) in the artwork file, including an article on how Starfleet Blair did their broadcasts (that's three pdf files), plus the cue sheets, disc labels, a ticket, and Billboard

10 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - New Orleans

Unknown generation tape, sounds good, there's a bit of hiss.

I found a copy of the newspaper ad, and a concert review.

The ad confirms the date as November 14, 1979. The ad shows the concert was sponsored by Toronto FM station Q107, so it's likely they were the station that broadcast the concert.

The ad also reveals there were two shows, at 7:00 and 10:00 PM.  The tape I have is only 10 songs long.  I cross-referenced this with a different source posted by our pal Speedy
over at So Many Roads, and his version is the same length...and
cuts off Southside's comment after the song "New Orleans" in almost the same place.  Even if we take into account opening act YIPES! burning up a 1/2 hour to forty minutes, this was either a really short show, or they only broadcast a portion of the full concert.

By the way...Discogs tells me YIPES! put out two LPs back in the day.  Do any of Our Beloved Audience remember these guys?
