I wish I had a modern voice.

I've never digitized a Westwood One "In The Zone" show before, and this is the only one I own. I'm ignorant, so take all that follows as tentative and in need of confirmation.

I see "In The Zone" shows from 1996 into 2001. It's not clear if all of the shows were "live" concerts.  They differed from other Westwood One concert shows in they didn't have a host, but included a script for the local disc jockey.  The start of the live shows opens with a 45 second "bed" of audience noise for the disc jockey to speak over.  Audience noise is as boring as it gets when it goes on for almost a minute, so you'd better rehearse the script I've included for your convenience.

It's been a while since SilentWay and I yapped about the Fabulous Fiona Apple. The last time was a KFOG broadcast I posted back in 2021.  Ms. Apple opens the show here, but only gets two-thirds of the first CD.  Ben Harper receives the remainder, and for my money, I want more Apple and less Harper. Her 1996 debut album was a year and a half old and there was no sophomore release until 1999, and Harper had three releases behind him...so I get it.

My usual style on a 90's CD show is keep the announcers, drop the commercials, but I was struck by the number of defunct dinosaur ads.  1-800-Collect?  What's a collect call, grandpa?  This is like listening to an old blues song about gossips on your "party line."  Kodak film? A Doors VHS tape? Plymouth? This stuff is as old as a diplodocus.

Early photo of Jim Morrison
and the Doors, taken with Kodak film.

You get 300 dpi scans of the CD discs, the cue sheets, the script, plus newspaper listings confirming the dates I've supplied above. All commercials tracked so you can drop 'em if you don't want 'em.

Once more we dip into the Sam Eliot's Mustache tape collection.  This one is an off-the-air recording from a local radio station.  The sound is not as good as the pre-FM's we have recorded directly from the radio reel-to-reel tapes.  The rarity of these shows make it worth preserving.  The show is missing the "audience interview" and "outro" credits at the end.

There was no broadcast date noted on the cassette, so we have to Scooby-Doo this one.

The Captured Live! series started broadcast in 1982.

I found a newspaper listing that shows Shooting Star played the Civic Center in Salisbury, MD on September 4, 1982.

I note they also played the Civic Center on September 21, 1981.  Could that be the date? They play several songs from their third LP, III Wishes, released on July 9, 1982.  It's not likely they'd be playing songs from an album that was not yet released (and probably not even recorded).

My conclusion is that it's September 9, 1982.

As usual, flac files of wavs, plus a newspaper article. And also as usual, if any of Our Beloved Audience have any information, please drop it into the comments section below.  It's LIKELY that I'm getting something wrong on these digitizations, but I'm happy to correct errors.

19 10,000 Maniacs - Cherry Tree

This is set of 10,000 Maniacs demo tapes for the "In My Tribe" LP that I got in trade on a cassette back in the late 80s.  The same sets of songs, in the same order, were pressed up on a bootleg CD in 1995 on BLAST Records, supposedly a British record label with the ritzy address of "15th floor King's Reach Tower, Stamford Street London SE1 9LS."
"Borag thungg,
Voodoo Wagon Earthlets!"

In researching the bootleg geography, I found that there's a pop cultural thing with that building: 2000 AD is a British sci-fi anthology comic book.  Tharg the Mighty, an alien from a planet orbiting Betelgeuse, has been a running gag since 1997 as the fictional editor of the comic book.  His office (i.e., "command module") is in (you guessed it) King's Reach Tower.  I was hoping to find that Tharg was on the 15th floor, but the address was "Tharg, 2000 A.D. King's Reach Tower, Command Module 2012, Stamford Street, London SE1 9LS, England, Nr Europe, Earth, first star past Centauri, Milky Way Galaxy, Continuum No. Beta Z."  No 15th floor, as I had hoped.

An address like that might be a really obvious comedy riff to our U.K. contingent, but it's lost on a Yank like me.

But I digress, as usual.  The point I was trying to make before I got lost is these are NOT from that bootleg CD.  The sound on these cassette versions may be better...or worse.  On my cassette, track 11 was listed as "Cure Song."  The bootleg CD says the song is "The Biggest Chain."  Whatever it is, it is NOT a cover of a song by the Cure, so I'm going with the boot's nomenclature.  The boot, on the other hand, lists track 13 as "unknown," when it's another take of "Verdi Cries."  How do you correctly identify "Verdi Cries" for track 12, and not hear that it's the same song on track 13?  Do bootleggers even listen to the music?
Where's the camera?

Well, I do. I try and clean this stuff up for Our Beloved Audience, too. There were LOOOOOONG silences between the songs, 10 to 15 seconds.  I edited those down because who wants to listen to tape hiss?  Life's too short for that, man... I did not try to remove the hiss.

If any of our readers have the tracks from the bootleg CD, could you check to see if this is better, or worse?

Flac files of wavs, digitized from one of Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï's creaky old cassette tapes!

Also, I see our The Boss is working on something behind the scenes, and here I am jumpin' the gun early on a Sunday...feel free to drop your next project today, boss!  I've got another one that I'll be putting up this afternoon!  It's a SUPER SUNDAY here at the Voodoo Wagon!  Tell your friends! :)

This boot was located in a closeout bin on the sidewalk in Tokyo six years ago.
Can't quite locate the artwork at this time, maybe someone else can come through with this.
The lyrical interlude in "Game" is especially good.

The studio jam contains some ideas for what would become The Firm, with some Paul Rogers (?) vocals. Includes embryonic versions of Fortune Hunter and Midnight Moonlight, and blues.

Contrary  to the cover this is NOT a soundboard. Just a excellent audience recording.

17 Georgia Satellites - Don't Pass Me By
18 Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands To Yourself, It's Only Rock n' Roll
19 Georgia Satellites - Railroad Steel, Rocket in my Pocket
20 Pierre Robert - WMMR ID

Flac files of wavs. I found a newspaper (the Millville Daily) that confirms the date of the show and that WMMR brodcast it, and calls out the venue as "Trump Plaza on the Boardwalk."

However...Etreeddb says the Georgia Satellites were at the "Convention Center 8/21."

Wiki says that the Convention Center opened in 1997, making an appearance by the Georgia Satellites almost 10 years earlier very, very difficult.  Time travel?  It could be... the television tells me Bigfoot is real so perhaps these guys had a DeLeorean and a flux capacitor.

Setlist.fm matches the above setlist...except it's missing "Six Years Gone" and "Long Gone" after "Somethin' Else."  Perhaps there was a rebroadcast later that had those two songs edited out?

The latter half of the show has some phase problems, so the sound shifts around a bit if you've got headphones on.  It sound better coming out of my stereo speakers.

Once again...this one comes from our munificent pal, Sam Eliot's Mustache, who generously shipped a tape cross-country as raw material for me to digitize.

He offers this personal reminiscence about WMMR-FM:

"Summer in the Philadelphia tri-state area meant one of two things. Go to the Pocono Mountains or go to 'Da Shore'. Sit on the beach with your radio nearby, listening to your favorite rock station (which at the time was WMMR-FM). Later on, go up on the boardwalk and get some pizza and/or "wooder ice". If you're even near Philly, you know what I mean. During the summer, WMMR would take a break from the usual Friday night local concert broadcast. But every now and then they would put on a concert on the Atlantic City boardwalk and broadcast it during the lunchtime hour. This time they had the Georgia Satellites on the boardwalk, fresh of their debut album and the hit "Keep Your Hands To Yourself'"and the minor hit "Battleship Chains." While not much success afterwards, they still always put on a great live show. Enjoy!"

While we've had a few Bruce Hornsby tracks turn up here at the V-W on various compilations, we haven't had full shows...until today's double-header.

This was a private concert performance by Bruce Hornsby on a Saturday afternoon presented by KFOG-FM.   There was no notice of the show in the Yoshi's newspaper ad for that week.

I did find an image of a Bruce Hornsby show pass for this concert, which I've included in the artwork folder.

Rainbow's Cadillac was released on KFOG's Live From The Archives II in 1995.

11 Commercial - Golden State Warriors Ad

This was a "Live From The Archives - The Show" rebroadcast and
looks like it's been edited down from a longer original broadcast.

I left the ad for our local basketball team in, because I like it.

Plus... while it's the wrong sport, it allows me to point out that I'm about to pitch a double-header in your direction, so make sure you've got your batting helmet on!  Coming up later today is ANOTHER Bruce Hornsby show, also from Yoshi's (you gotta play the same ballpark for it to be a double-header...).

Another tape that I got in trade back in the late 1980s; this one didn't have a lot of information with it.
Was "O42" the radio station?  A night club?

The original cassette was labeled "Nijmegen, Holland."

Well, the Internet clears up a bit of the mystery.

WIKI says 1976 to 2000: "The building at Oranjesingel 42 in Nijmegen, or O42 for short, is a former student society and cultural stage and film theatre.  In 1976 the building was renovated on a large scale and in September the Political-cultural centre O42 was officially opened. The building consisted of four catering rooms, including a front café, a theater café and a large hall (the Blauwe Zaal) that was also suitable for theater. Various political and cultural (student) organizations found shelter in O42. "

As for the name?  It's the address of the building: O42 = "Oranjesingel 42"

WIKI SAYS "The Oranjesingel is a road in the city center of the Dutch city of Nijmegen that runs from Keizer Karelplein to the intersection Hertogstraat/Prins Hendrikstraat and then turns into the St. Canisiussingel towards the Waal bridge. The Oranjesingel is part of the N 326 and is one of the busiest streets in Nijmegen. On the Oranjesingel are many national and municipal monuments. The road is designed as a road with 4 lanes without a central reservation with a vent road on both sides."

Back in the day, hey, "Nijmegen, Holland" sounded fine to me, the Netherlands and Holland being somewhat synonymous from my distant perspective.  These days, I can glance at WIKI and find Nijmegen is in Gelderland, not in Holland.

What's that you say?  What about the music? Oh, yeah... this is a low generation tape, probably a 1st or 2nd generation, so there's some hiss in the background.  It sounds very good.  Case does covers of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bukka White, and (presumably) Arlo Guthrie.  Good stuff... does anyone know WHERE Peter Case released "Power of Love?"  I can't find it in his Nerves, Plimsouls, or solo catalogs.

Don Dixon - 1986 - VPRO Studio, Hilversum, Holland

Don Dixon - 1986 - VPRO Studio, Hilversum, Holland

01 Announcer - Intro
02 Don Dixon - Swallowing Pride
03 Don Dixon - I've Got Dreams To Remember
04 Don Dixon - Inside These Arms
05 Don Dixon - Outro
06 Don Dixon - Why (B-side of Praying Mantis)

This is a short radio show.  The generation of my copy is unknown but it is likely first generation.

In the liner notes to the odds n' sods CD collection, "Note Pad #38," Dixon mentions ""Inside These Arms:" I remember singing this song live on the radio in the Netherlands the day after I wrote it... sometime in the mid 80s...I was there doing promo for "Most of the Girls Like To Dance But Only Some Of The Boys Like To.""

Whoever I traded with for this show filled it out with the B-side of "Praying Mantis."  As that's still unreleased on CD I've left it on.

Bourgeois Tagg - Demo, cover of Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows"

Bourgeois Tagg - Tomorrow Never Knows with "Within You Without You" solo section.

As I was going through old cassettes recorded off the radio, I found this Bourgeois Tagg demo tape stuck on the end of an unrelated concert.  It's a cover of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows," with the instrumental break from "Within You Without You" added in the middle.  As a Beatles fan, I found it to be interesting, so I'm sharing it here.

I looked at the Bourgeois Tagg discography on Discogs.com, and it's not listed as ever having been released.  There is a version of it up at YouTube under the heading Bourgeois-Tagg "Tomorrow Never Knows" (Not Utopia) but it's not the same take as this version.  That one is from a live concert (and I hear "thank you KFOG" at the end, so it's probably from a KFOG broadcast).

I just went and ran a search on Guitars 101, and yes, there's a KFOG broadcast by Bourgeois Tagg.  There's still a live link, so if you like this, grab it while you can.

The B-52's - Paradiso

November 17, 1979
KRO-FM in NL., re-broadcast captured June 13, 2008

The B-52s:
Fred Schneider - Vocals, Percussion
Kate Pierson - Vocals, Keyboards, Synth Bass
Cindy Wilson - Vocals, Percussion
Ricky Wilson - Guitar
Keith Strickland - Drums, Guitar, Keyboards

Thank you and kudos to the taper/yourself! This is an excellent quality sounding show and it's a great performance by The B-52's from 44 years ago in 1979. If you are a fan, don't hesitate on this show and if in doubt just hit play on the track on. From Keith Strickland's drum attack in the intro to the criminally underrated chunky guitar of Ricky Wilson (R.I.P.) straight through to the vocals come in, it's brilliant all the way. The entire show is near perfect and probably the best live recording I have heard by the Bees from 1979. So, this is a rarity; it's very hard to find a recording of this quality from The B-52's. Thanks again to the uploader and taper.
