Early & Late Shows

From the Wikipedia:

The Dinosaurs, formed in 1982, was a Bay Area supergroup to emerge from the psychedelic music era of San Francisco. The group consisted of Peter Albin of Big Brother and the Holding Company, John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Papa John Creach of Hot Tuna, Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane, Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead, Barry Melton of Country Joe and The Fish and keyboardist Merl Saunders from the Saunders-Garcia Band. In the 1990s David LaFlamme of It’s A Beautiful Day and Jerry Miller of Moby Grape also toured with this group.

In 1988, the band released its only studio album, Dinosaurs. In 2005 the band released a retrospective album on the Evangeline label, entitled Friends of Extinction. They were the band that forced Dinosaur Jr to add on the “Jr.” in 1987, shortly after that band released You’re Living All Over Me.

This show features many guests including Country Joe McDonald, Mickey Hart, Sam Andrew, Righteous Raoul, Nicky Hopkins, Merl Saunders, David Nelson, Harold Aceves and Mike Wilhelm… And finally - special thanks to John Cipollina (RIP) who helped to make this master recording possible!

Robert Cray / Grant Park, Chicago, IL -WXRT-FM - July 4, 1988 1st gen tape

.....and here's another one.....only this time I know that it's a first generation tape, right from a master of the broadcast. So... while it's not perfect,  it's close.  If you like Robert Cray, you'll like it.

This is the very first "Taste of Chicago" summer show put on by radio station WXRT at the Petrillo Bandshell in Grant Park.  Robert Cray headlined, and the other bands were Graham Parker, Timbuk 3, and the Insiders.

Garland Jeffreys / RCA Studios, NYC, NY - August 28, 1981

Here's another in my "less than perfect" multi-generation tapes...this one is VERY listenable, and doesn't seem to be available in higher quality out there on the Internet.  This is an "in-studio" radio broadcast recorded at RCA Studios in New York City.  The show is about 40 minutes, shorter than a typical Garland Jeffreys' gig of the time, and the sound of the applause seems more like a studio gig than a small nightclub.

The original taper edited out the disc jockey commentary, but fragments are heard in the middle and end of the show.  I've left the tape exactly as I got it, all I did was normalize the volume on the tracks. I'd guess that this was from a local New York station, like WNEW or WLIR....but that's just a speculation.

Flac files of wavs.

Los Lobos / McCabe's Guitar Shop, Santa Monica, CA. - May 13, 1984

Okay, gang, here's another multi-generation tape that might be of interest to some of you...This one is hissy between the songs, but sounds pretty good when the band is playing.  It's an all-acoustic and all-Spanish-language Los Lobos show recorded at Santa Monica's McCabe's Guitar Shop.  Does anyone in our Audience have a lower generation copy of this show?  If so, can you upload it and provide a link?

Los Lobos
McCabe's Guitar Shop
May 13, 1984

Unknown generation tape.  The original tape is likely to be a sound board.  Hissy between songs. There is a 2-LP bootleg named "El Fronte Norteno" that appears to be sourced from this show.

Boz Scaggs / Budokan, Tokyo - July 9, 1988

The shows I posted were from master cassettes taped off the radio, or syndicated radio discs I digitized.  I'm starting to share tapes I received in trade.  They're not masters, they're got some hiss.  I'll make sure to mention this in the blog post so you know what you're getting.

I got this in a swap with a trader in Tokyo. There's a shorter edit of the concert up on YouTube in higher quality.  There's a bootleg DVD of that show (which is the source of the picture over there on right)  My digitization has a bit of hiss, and the high end sounds a bit dull on my stereo. I think it's of high enough quality to share....let me know what you think.

Taper Notes:
OK, here we are a FM broadcast of Iggy & The Stooges with James Williamson on guitar. Again, I don't get the best reception of WFMU even though I'm pretty damn close to it, but it was coming in better today after some messing with the antenna and the Beam Box, that being said, it is still a mono recording throughout most of it, stereo might have broken in at some points. Also, I heard some glitches throughout the broadcast and dropouts, they were all from WFMU's side of things, I think this show made it through pretty unscathed. Offensive words blurred out.

Frank Zappa - Dirty Words

@pdf

A person can only be offended by smuttiness if they believe in smut as
a concept and believe in the concept of dirty words—which I don’t.
It’s always something that bothered rock writers more than anybody
else. I mean, who the fuck are these rock writers, anyway?

Angels of Light - Everything Is Good Here / Please Come Home (2003)

Angels of Light - Everything Is Good Here / Please Come Home
(2003)

(For sample purposes only)

"While his countless post-punk contemporaries wallow in self-misery and miserable poetry, Michael Gira - the former leader of avant-noise-droners Swans - creates a ruptured synthesis of blues, folk, and rock with his new acoustic-based group." - SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY

This is the third Angels of Light album to be released in limited edition on Important. Like the first two, it is limited to 500 copies on deluxe double virgin vinyl. According to Michael Gira, this album "started, innocently enough, with the intent of being a simple collection of well-written songs performed by the musicians who played them live for the last few years, with the addition of a few acoustic songs, lightly colored. Instead, as things often seem to go around here, I ended up saturating every available molecule of the recording tape with sound, then hacked, cut, poured sonic fertilizer/salt on the resultant wounds, and it finally metastasized into this raging/weeping beast, which in the end succeeded in slowly biting off my head, leaving this album behind as evidence."

Steve Earle - Live Radio Show 2-6-2013 Radio Eins Studio Berlin Germany @224kbps

NOW MORE THAN EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's Christmastime in Washington
The Democrats rehearsed
Gettin' into gear for four more years
Things not gettin' worse
Republicans drink whiskey neat
And thanked their lucky stars
They said, "He cannot seek another term
They'll be no more FDRs"
I sat home in Tennessee
Just staring at the screen
With an uneasy feeling in my chest
I'm wonderin' what it means
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now
I followed in your footsteps once
Back in my travelin' days
Somewhere I failed to find your trail
Now I'm stumblin' through the haze
But there's killers on the highway now
And a man can't get around
So I sold my soul for wheels that roll
Now I'm stuck here in this town
Come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help us out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now
There's foxes in the hen house
Cows out in the corn
The unions have been busted
Their proud red banners torn
To listen to the radio
You'd think that all was well
But you and me and Cisco know
It's going straight to hell
So come back, Emma Goldman
Rise up, old Joe Hill
The barracades are goin' up
They cannot break our will
Come back to us, Malcolm X
And Martin Luther King
We're marching into Selma
As the bells of freedom ring
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow

Damn in my haste I forgot to give you a song list.

The Boarding House

Here's a really fabulous "FM" recording of Talking Heads from September 16, 1978. I don't have much information about this recording. Perhaps another Planet Rocker does. Anyone? You will notice that the original uploader notes that this comes from KSAN reels. My guess is, based on the original text file, that this was recorded directly from the reels rather than being an FM broadcast recording, but I'm only guessing. That's why I've marked this as "Pre-FM," even though, I think, that's not technically correct.

Funny story. I'd been living WAY out in rural SW Washington state. How far out? Far enough that I'd been heating and cooking with wood for nearly a decade! So, shortly after moving to Seattle my friend LouAnn asked me if I'd like to go see a movie. "What movie?" I asked. She said "Stop Making Sense." I told her I'd never heard of it. She said it was a concert film by a band called Talking Heads. Yikes! I told her that I really didn't think so as there was "simply no way in hell I'd like a band with a name like that!" (Yes, I was that dim! Some would say I still am…) She said SHE'D pay because she thought I'd really like both the band and the movie. A woman taking ME to a movie? Hell yes I went! Bottom line: I could not believe how great they were! Lou left after one showing. Me? I stayed to watch it again! Took a bus home. I probably would have stayed for a third showing if there would have been one!

Thanks to the original source and Dime!

Okay, gang, I figure the rarity of this might make of it interest.  This is a cassette I purchased off Ebay from the estate of someone or other who'd been an executive at Rolling Stones Records (the band Grinderswitch was not a Rolling Stones Records artist).  Anyway...I tossed it in the pile of things I was going to eventually get to, because Southern Rock wasn't something I listened to at that time...anyway, I finally got around to it as the wife is up in Seattle for the grandson's 4th birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is.

This Grinderswitch was a southern rock band, working in a similar style to the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band.  Grinderswitch didn't break out of regional success, unfortunately.  I had never listened to them until I ran across this promo cassette, and they're quite enjoyable.  Solid playing, stinging slide guitar work, and good bluesy vocals.  They also cover an Albert King song, which shows excellent taste.

They put out six albums from 1974-1981, track 'em down...this is good stuff for anyone who likes the southern rock style.

British DJ John Peel used Grinderswitch's "Pickin' The Blues" as a theme song.

Note: The record company labeled this as"Grinder Switch," but the band spelled their name as "Grinderswitch."  There is another band named "Grinder Switch and Garland Jeffries,"
which issued an album in 1970.  The two bands are not related.

Flac files of wavs.  This is digitized directly from the promo cassette tape.
I've include scans of both sides of the cassette and the typed cassette label.

If anyone can provide more information about the band, this cassette, the venue, etc., please leave a comment!
