This is the earliest known live recording of tool. The band performed here again a couple of months later. The tracks 'Cold & Ugly' & 'Jerk-Off' from this show were released on the Tool EP 'Opiate'.
This is probably a vocal monitor mix as the guitars are a bit in the background.
Here's another one of the multi-artist Bay Area Music Awards broadcasts, this one from KFOG-FM. This one has some interesting collaborations, with members of Journey teaming with both Michael Bolton, and Sammy Hagar, Carlos Santana jamming with Pharaoh Sanders, and a sprawling super-jam where all of the Grateful Dead jammed with Huey Lewis & the News, and then roped John Fogerty in for a finale of "Long Tall Sally."
I cut out as much of the talking and long introductions as possible, tightening this up to less than 80 minutes so you can burn it to a single CD. Flac files of wavs.

Here’s a short set by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers recorded at the Pinkpop Festival on May 30, 1977. Petty and the band were on their first tour of Europe, opening shows for Nils Lofgren. This is one of Hans de Vente’s tapes that he digitized a few years back. As Hans put his tapes up as one single flac file, I chaptered it into individual songs and spent a couple of hours removing radio static one pop at a time in Audacity. There was a large drop-out in Jaguar and Thunderbird and I blended it back together; you can still hear it but it’s less jarring. Sound quality is Very Good FM. It's a nice, rockin' set, and like a lot of opening acts trying to work their way up to the top, they're "ON" for the entire performance.

Lorin Rowan has put out albums in a wide range of styles, starting with the country-rock of the Rowans (a.k.a. Rowan Brothers) albums in the 1970s. By the early 80s, he'd put toghether The Edge, a pop-reggae club band that packed the houses throughout the Bay Area. Based in Marin County, they made many appearances at San Rafael's New George's night club. This is a radio broadcast by KRQR-FM, as part of their "Weekend Wednesdays" series of regular live broadcasts from New George's.

The Bammies were an annual Bay Area music awards show, founded by BAM Magazine publisher Dennis Erokan. While the print magazine is long gone, there's an online version at http://bammagazine.com/
As with most award shows, there was a LOT of talking and not much performance. I edited this one hour of music down from three 100 minute cassette tapes (recorded on both sides). I edited the tracks as close to the start of the music as possible to cut out the blather. There's two places where the deejay talks right over the start of the song, unfortunately.
Highlights of this show include Gregg Allman doing what I believe to be an unreleased song ("Turn Nothing Back Into Something"), and Kirk Hammett of Metallica jamming with Carlos Santana.

Quiet Sun - Mainstream
Studio Recordings @320 {Out of Print}
Having originated from a Dulwich College band by the name of Pooh and the Ostrich Feather, Quiet Sun was formed in 1970 after MacCormick had made friends with Robert Wyatt, the son of a friend of his mother's. The band integrated jazz elements and sparkling keyboard sounds into their complex music - similar to Soft Machine - but Manzanera's energetic guitar made their music very different from the Softs' who had not been using any guitar (other than bass guitar) on their regular albums before the 1975 release of Bundles, and had used reeds as the main other melody instruments aside of keyboards. Quiet Sun split up in 1972, Manzanera to Roxy Music, MacCormick to Matching Mole, Hayward to This Heat, and Jarrett began to teach mathematics. In 1975, Manzanera booked a studio for 26 days to record his album Diamond Head and got Quiet Sun together again to record an album from their old composed material in the studio at the same time. This first and only album of theirs, with participation of Brian Eno and the late Ian MacCormick, titled Mainstream was critically acclaimed and became the New Musical Express' album of the month. One of Quiet Sun's songs appears on Robert Wyatt's Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, under the name "Team Spirit". Additionally, reworked versions of "Mummy was an asteroid, Daddy was a small non-stick kitchen utensil" and "Rongwrong" both appear on the album "801 Live" ("Mummy was an asteroid, Daddy was a small non-stick kitchen utensil" appears under the name "East of Asteroid").

This is a copy of a tape I got by trading with a guy in Tokyo...I don't know the generation, but it's low, probably a 1st or 2nd gen. It's an FM show but I don't have a source listed.
While Charlie Sexton came out of the mid-80s Austin, Texas root-rock scene as a guitar prodigy with a grounding in the blues, his first album was mainstream pop-rock, closer to glam and New Wave. Coupled with his young age (16) and good looks, Sexton was "big in Japan" in that Cheap-Trick-Budukanish sort of way...and you can hear the screams of the teenage girls on this tape. He was marketed as a handsome 1980s big-hair New Wavish rock star. Is that a trace of a fake English accent I hear during the band intros?

Frank Zappa always said it was a good thing he was the ringleader of his ensemble since he would never have passed an audition to play with his bandmates. Henry Rollins suffers from the same fate. Rollins may be a creative and literate individual, but he's a one-trick-pony when it comes to songwriting. The average Rollins tune shifts between two gears: Rollins speaking ominously while his bandmates vamp dark and funky, and Rollins screaming with hatred while his cohorts grind and shred. Fortunately, Chris Haskett and drummer Sim Cain provide Come In and Burn with enough diversity to keep it from sounding trite, unleashing mind-warping chops that range from blackened soul to gut-wrenching noise. --Jon Wiederhorn
I'm convinced that Henry Rollins is the victim of his very own reputation in regard to "Come in and Burn". Rollins is one of the sacred icons of hardcore because of his Black Flag past but of certain solo albums of his as well. But this is exactly the catch: "Come in and Burn" is not your expected Rollins LP, indeed it's more a metal LP than a harcore one and a stunning one at that.
Rollins is blessed to have a great band behind him here, that delivers incredible recipes for aggression and anger and does so in a very innovative way. There are songs here that will easily ignite any mosh pit, songs that will move even the most snobby metal fans. "End of Something" and "All I Want" are easily two of the best songs Rollins has ever sung and "On my way to the cage" is a cue for great metal songs. "Thursday afternoon", "Spilling Over The Side" and "Saying Goodbye again" are great introspective songs that lack nothing in feeling and intensity.
Did i say intensity? I definitely think that this album happens to be one of the most intense of the 90s. Rollins is at his song writing best if not at his most mature both as a songwriter and performer (I've seen Rollins in 3-4 different tours and he was easily on top of his game while touring "Come in and burn"). One thing that is also certain is that in previous albums (as well as following albums) there wasn't much balance in Rollins's albums. He's always had the ability to write great songs ("Liar" being the overwhelming evidence) but he's also written many indifferent songs that have spoiled the goods overall. Not so in "Come in burn". This is through and through intense, great and stomping, like a bus going 100m/h with the breaks out of order. If you do own this album and you've somehow forgotten it on your shelf go and rediscover it. Chances are you'll be puzzled at yourself that you've left it there gathering dust. If you don't own it you are seriously missing out on a fantastic rock album. A masterpiece.

A Certain Ratio are a post-punk band formed in 1977 in Manchester, England. While originally part of the punk rock movement, they soon added funk and dance elements to their sound. They are sometimes referred to as "post punk funk". The band's name is taken from the lyrics of Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel" from the 1974 album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy).
Manchester's A Certain Ratio (ACR) was one of the first new wave-era outfits to use horns and other instruments to play a soulful brand of contemporary music that defied prevalent trends but proved significantly influential. The Graveyard cassette compiles '79 material — half studio work produced by Martin Hannett, the rest live from their hometown's famed Electric Ballroom. With the subsequent Do the Du, an exciting and original post-punk dance record that does ACR proud (check out "Shack Up" for the decay of modern social values), it seemed certain that ACR would quickly join Public Image in the vanguard of the new rock left.

The quartet Black Fortress of Opium certainly isn't out to hide its lead member's part-Turkish roots -- besides a variety of artwork references, there's the minor fact that she credits herself as Ajda the Turkish Queen. But rather than being a neo-traditional act playing nothing but saz, say, Black Fortress of Opium is a brawling, dark monster of a band that seems like it should be playing shows with, say, Nicki Jaine or the Dresden Dolls rather than Gogol Bordello. Ajda's theatrical singing an audible combination of styles that still finding its way, but well down that road. To her further credit, she often calls to mind one of America's most compelling voices, Kristin Hersh.

I was only vaguely aware of the group, having heard their hit single "Missiles" a few years back. To my ears, there are sonic similarities to other British post-punk bands like the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Joy Division. If you like those bands, this might be worth a listen. The Sound had a large following in the Netherlands and Germany.
The show was posted to the Internet by Hans Devente July 2014. Hans digitized this as two flac files. I've chaptered the files and normalized the volume. I do not know the date and wasn't sure about the venue, but it matches a set list from Rotterdam.
I checked the set list against the five officially released Dutch Radio Broadcast CDs,
and this doesn't match with any of them....so it's an unreleased show.

I bought this record here in the Bay Area when it came out in 1983, but didn't know much about the band. Fast Floyd had been playing extensively around the area for years; in any given week the band was likely to be playing a gig somewhere in San Francisco or the East Bay.
Here's what I gleaned from the Internet:
Robert Henry Mckenzie (a.k.a. "Fast Floyd") and Billy Borsey moved from the East Coast out to San Francisco about 1973 or so, and played in a series of local bands. Eventually, Borsey moved back to New York and formed Mink Deville. I've seen one version of the story where McKenzie moved back with him but then split when the band started to get popular, and another where he didn't move back...but both versions attribute his split with the fledgling Mink Deville band to outstanding warrants and fear of being arrested if he remained in New York. McKenzie is sometimes credited with coming up with the name Mink Deville.
Circa 1978-1979, he formed Fast Floyd with his girl friend Silke Berlinn on vocals. This version of the band released a local single, "Bizarre," and placed two songs on "City Lights," a local compilation LP that also featured tracks by Rocky Sullivan and future stars Tommy Tutone.
His next band was the Spiders, who put out self-released 45 in 1981 that got local radio airplay on college station KUSF. The Spiders played the local club circuit: the Mabuhay Gardens (aka The Fab Mab), On Broadway, Deaf Club, and at one point had former Avengers drummer Danny Furious as a member. Vocals were handled by Billy Bastiani (formerly of Ultrasheen).
The next incarnation was as Fast Floyd & His Famous Firebirds, who put out the album "Devil's Daughter" in 1983. Both records are influenced by 1950s rock 'n' roll and R&B without being as overtly revivalist as the Stray Cats or Robert Gordon. Fast Floyd is less rockabilly with a dash more of New Orleans; probably due to the presence of some funky sax work on several tracks.
What I've got here is the Spiders 45 and the Devil's Daughter LP, digitized from clean copies, declicked, with scans of the record sleeves. Flac files of wavs.

**Notes from jonsatticuk:
These tracks, also known as the Axis Outtakes, nearly never made it past Kathy Etchingham's dustbin. Luckily they were retrieved and ended up in an auction at Sotheby’s in December 1981. Since then they have turned up in various guises on collector’s lists and of course have been treated to the usual shabby mangling on various bootleg releases.
Over the years I've had various copies of these tracks from terrible to very good. These however are the best I have ever come across and were supplied to me by a very reliable source who told me he had managed to track down and obtain a dub from the masters on DAT. Given the quality I have no reason to doubt his claim.
After the Long Ryders broke up, Metallic B.O. was compiled by Rick Gershon of the Long Ryders Fan Club and was sold by mail order. Taking its name from “Metallic K.O.” a lo-fi semi-official bootleg of a chaotic Iggy & the Stooges concert, Metallic B.O. followed in its footsteps with a ramshackle montage of audience tapes, sound-checks, radio interviews, answering machine messages, studio chatter, and Elvis Presley impersonations edited as a tribute to the passing of one of America’s great roots rock bands of the 1980s.
A shorter version was re-issued twice on CD, but here’s the original cassette tape, along with scans of the j-card and cassette cases.
If you’re not familiar with the Long Ryders, this wouldn’t be a good place to start. Instead, I recommend “The Best Of The Long Ryders,” a single disc compilation that will give you a good overview of their music. Roots-rock bands of the 1980s drew inspiration from traditional American music (in their case, country) but played with a clear awareness of operating in a post-punk musical environment (hence their cover of the Sex Pistols “Anarchy In The U.K.” sitting right next to their cover of Charlie Pride’s “Is Anybody Going To San Antone?”) The Long Ryders paved the way for alt-country and Americana bands such as the Jayhawks, Wilco, and the Old 97s.
I also recommend the expanded and remastered version of their “Native Sons” album, which is also currently in print. But for dedicated fans of the band, who want to hear the original fan club release….here you go! I chaptered the multiple tracks as over fifty individual tracks, which will allow you to separate just the music should you choose to do so. But half the fun of this cassette are the interviews, particularly an argument on a call-in radio show with a Barbra Streisand fan intercut between several songs.
