Foo Fighters / Live From The Pit 1997 Manchester music, Cincinnati stage banter

Foo Fighters
Live From The Pit 1997
To be aired From July 28 thru August 4, 1997

Claims to be the Garage, Cincinnati, OH, July 12, 1997..and some of the stage banter is from there.

But the music?  No...it's not from there.

The songs are from the Apollo Theatre, May 25th, 1997, Manchester, England.

What the heck is going on here?

On CD1, track 7, the (supposed) source venue for this show is identified with the following dialog:

Dominic Griffin: "We're back and we're so high...

Joe Fleischer: ...above the stage at the Garage in Cincinnati with the Foo Fighters..."

As you know I try and verify, verify, verify everything because the world is full of bad information.  So I check the newspapers...

The recording of the Garage was mentioned in the Cincinnati Post newspaper prior to the concert as the show "will be recorded for broadcast later this summer." The show was promoted for the broadcast as "the Foo Fighters' July 12 concert at the Garage was recorded for a nationally syndicated radio show, "Live From The Pit, which will air...."

That seems clear enough, doesn't it?  The show's announcers say it was from the Garage, and this is repeated before and after the show in the newspapers.

But I found the following at FooFighterslive.com:

"Soundboard Audio #1 Official CD [Live From The Pit #97-31]

In 1997 syndicated US Radio broadcast what they claimed was this show. However for reasons unknown the musical performances they aired were from the 1997/05/25 show in Manchester, England with some of the stage banter from this show mixed in. This recording therefore is only needed for the stage banter, not the musical performance.
"

Ah, jeez...the next thing you know, "they" will be telling me the world is really a globe, not flat.

Hey.  I'm kidding.  We can see the Earth is round from the V-W Orbital Platform, where we store all these great shows for you!

The Apollo show was recorded by the BBC and issued as a promo cassette and promo DAT, and was broadcast in several European countries, and was bootlegged.  Why the music from the Manchester show was edited with the stage talk from Cincinnati is unknown.  The review of the Cincinnati show was positive, so it wasn't that the band had an off night.

So, this is a weird one for your collection: the music from one venue with the stage banter from another.  Well, at least we get Phil Hartman on a vintage commercial.

We start today's Voodoo liner notes with corrections.

The Discogs listing for this 2-CD set says "US Global Satellite Network 2-CD radio show hosted by Joe Frischer and Don McGriffin and recorded live in Toronto Canada 3rd April 1996."

Well, it's really Dominic Griffin, former cast member of MTV's The Real World: Los Angeles, and entertainment reporter, Joe Fleischer.  I've included an article from Billboard Magazine August 26, 1996 that names the hosts.

While I'm no Foo Fighters expert, the CD 1 cue sheet says "Chicken Derby," and CD 2 cue sheet says "Up In Arms" but I don't hear songs by those names there.

Then we have a bit of a mystery.  There are two versions of this up at Discogs, one with green colored CDs, and the other with red CDs.

Green:
Matrix / Runout (CD1): MADE IN THE USA BY METATEC CORPORATION   C0CE004XD
Matrix / Runout (CD2): MADE IN THE USA BY METATEC CORPORATION   C0CE103XA
Red:
Matrix / Runout (CD1): MADE IN THE USA BY METATEC CORPORATION   C0C5U06XC
Matrix / Runout (CD2): MADE IN THE USA BY METATEC CORPORATION   C0C5W02XD

The hub matrix numbers are different, and CD colors are different...but the CD track listings are identical.  It's not clear why they would produce two color variations of the CD.  I don't have the red version for comparison, so it may be that there were regional differences in the ads...although that's a long shot, as Sony and MCI sold the same products nationwide.

In one of the interviews (CD 1, Track 18) Grohl complains about being pelted with Mentos.  "They really hurt bad, they're hard little candies, packs, single one...they hurt, they're like coins."

Not having a clue what he was on about, I found a newspaper article which reveals it came from the video for "Big Me," which included a parody of an ad for Mentos.  The Beatles' George Harrison mentioned he liked Jelly Babies in an interview, and the band was pelted with jelly beans while on tour.  Thirty-two years later, Foo Fighter fans did the same thing.

You get a Billboard article that documents the names of the hosts, 300 dpi scans of the discs and cue sheets, and newspaper articles mentioning fans throwing Mentos at the band.

This show was bootlegged on 180 gram vinyl as Live In Toronto April 3 / 1996

Foo Fighters / Live From The Pit - Garage, Cincinnati, OH Aug. 4, 1997

This show is the Foo Fighter’s second appearance on “Live From The Pit.” It’s the same format as the Matthew Sweet LFTP show I posted back in 2013,  up to and including the same interview questions (“Who’s your favorite Spice Girl?”)

I guess when you’ve come up with a great question like that, you might as well beat it to death, eh?

This is sourced from original discs of the syndicated show. I edited out the commercials. I’ve included 300 dpi scans of the cue sheets and discs, and all of the promo commercials.
