Steve One & The Shades / New George's, San Rafael, CA Nov. 18, 1987 KRQR-FM

I hadn’t played this cassette in twenty years until I digitized it in 2011 and that put me on a quest to eventually track down their lone LP (see above).  As I've finally got around to that project, I'm giving this one a "bump" so the two posts will be next to each other.

In retrospect I am stunned this band didn’t get a major label record contract. Steve One & the Shades had the chops and the songwriting, and it's clear from this tape they had a great live act. They even work in a sly musical reference to Hugo Montenegro’s version of “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" into "Sorry Someday." It may be a case of “there's not enough room on the radio dial” – we already HAD a Huey Lewis here in the Bay Area, so where would we put a second one?

The sound quality is excellent. It’s recorded directly from my master copy of a high-bias cassette. Flac files of wavs.

Selections From The 16th Annual Bammies March 7, 1992

The Bammies were an annual Bay Area music awards show, founded by BAM Magazine publisher Dennis Erokan.  While the print magazine is long gone, there's an online version at http://bammagazine.com/

As with most award shows, there was a LOT of talking and not much performance.  I edited this one hour of music down from three 100 minute cassette tapes (recorded on both sides).  I edited the tracks as close to the start of the music as possible to cut out the blather.  There's two places where the deejay talks right over the start of the song, unfortunately.

Highlights of this show include Gregg Allman doing what I believe to be an unreleased song ("Turn Nothing Back Into Something"), and Kirk Hammett of Metallica jamming with Carlos Santana.

The Beat, featuring Paul Collins / New George's, San Rafael, CA KRQR-FM

Paul Collins was in the Nerves, one of those fabulously "might have been" groups that was so loaded with talent that it's a pity the industry didn't know what to do with them in 1977.  The Nerves had Peter Case (who went on to be in the Plimsouls and have a successful solo career) and Jack Lee (who wrote "Hanging On The Telephone" for Blondie).  After the break up of the Nerves, Collins founded the Beat, who (unfortunately) are remembered more for being the band that made the British band the Beat be known as the "English Beat" in America.  That's sad, because the (American) Beat was a great, Beatlesque pop-rock band.

If you don't know this band, but enjoy the Power-Pop style, give this a shot; you're likely to enjoy it.

My original notes from 2011:

"This is not the currently circulating version posted at QualityBootz or Guitars 101.

This is an entirely new transfer of my master tape done in April 2011. I compared it with the QualityBootz version and I think this sounds better – there’s more bass and the treble has better definition. I recorded the original broadcast on TDK SA-X high bias tape, and used AudioQuest cables from the tape deck to the computer. My master tape has never been digitized before this transfer.

I banged together a cover for it, and included the original advertisement for the show from the San Francisco Chronicle’s entertainment section.

Also: the community spells their name with the Spanish spelling: Rafael, not Raphael...and the locals pronounce it as "Rah-FELL."

The show is great: Trower is playing in front of an enthusiastic small club audience and he really tears it up with his lead work. Trower is on tour in the United States right now and will be hitting England and Europe later in the year. Check this out, and if you like it, go check out his website and see if he’s coming to a town near you!"

I've added some additional ads from the SF Chronicle, taken from newspapers.com

And here in 2026, versions of this are still circulating with the city's name misspelled.  So I've now included a map for your reference.
