Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music (Présenté par le Collectif pour la Musique Live)

This one is a Version "A" concert, which means that somewhere out there exists a Version "B" with a different set of commercials.

Speaking of commercials, besides the usual suspects (Lee Jeans, Certs, U.S. Navy...) we have RockBill magazine.

The July 7, 1982 New York Times said, "... RockBill magazine, a Playbill-size publication, that was given out free in 70 ''showcase'' nightclubs that have live rock music entertainment. In addition to giving away 500,000 copies of RockBill at the clubs, subscriptions will be sold for it on commercials that will appear on MTV, the music television cable network, as part of a trade-off deal that will get the network not only pages of advertising but also program listings in the magazine in exchange. The magazine will only carry full, four-color bleed ads at $19,500 each."

I've included the cover of the magazine from August 1984, the month this show was broadcast.  Did any of you ever read RockBill?

Also in the Artwork folder are ads for the show, confirming the recording date of May 28, 1984.  I've got a review from the wrong Odeon, this one is in Birmingham. I couldn't find one for London, so this is better than nothing. England appears to be full of Odeons.  Here in the U.S. of A. we've got slathers of Fox, Greek, and Paramount Theaters.  Or "theatres," we can't figure out which spelling we prefer.

As usual, there is a BBC Transcription Services version of this (In Concert 335, CN 4429/S) that has two additional songs ("Sister Europe," "Into You Like A Train") These transcription discs sell for ridiculously high prices; there's someone asking £1,000.00 +£27.00 shipping for an XTC show over on Discogs at the time of this writing.

Another Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï digitziation for your daily download.

Flac files of wavs, 300 dpi scans of the disc labels and cue sheet, and a print ad to prove the date of the show.  I went fishing on Ebay and managed to find a used ticket for the show (only $9.99...and is it just me, or is it weird that used tickets often cost more than tickets to the original show? Because I think it's super-weird.)

Thorogood also played the Hollywood Palladium in October but that's after the Westwood One broadcast date, so it's definitely not the source date.

Unreleased at the time are the two Chuck Berry covers "Memphis, Tennessee" and "Reelin' and Rocking."

There's also a treasure trove of Budweiser ads, and I think I've got all four of them identified: The Tubes, B.B. King, Dio, and the Icicle Works.  They're all great!

Geography lesson:
Hollywood is a neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, not a city on its own.  Next door is West Hollywood, which IS a separate city, but is often credited to Los Angeles. However, before 1984, West Hollywood wasn't a city, it was an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County.

Terrible scan of the disc, the light bounces off it in a weird starburst pattern.  Really, it stinks.

As the Boss says, "We suck."

As with previous My Chemical Romance/Sum 41 show, I copied the show exactly as presented and it's in the Censored file. The producers backmasked twenty-seven profanities, making the original broadcast annoying to my ears.  I reversed the reversed words as best I could.

Note the inclusion of "http://www.shows.westwoodone.com/Absoultely-Live/inzone.htm Call your Westwood One Affiliate Sales Rep for your Username and Password."  This foreshadows the death of physical media. As time went on, there were fewer and fewer of these Westwood One shows burned onto CD-r. The next decade saw the rise of streaming and the slow death of many terrestrial radio stations.

I could not find any confirmation My Chemical Romance played Irvine in August.

Concertarchives.org has the band in Cincinnati on Aug 3 and San Diego on Aug. 5, in Japan from Aug. 12 to 14, and in England from Aug. 22 to 27, and in New York City Aug. 31.  IF TRUE...I repeat IF TRUE it's not likely they played the 1st, 2nd, or 4th because they'd have to move the equipment 2,100 miles to or from Cincinnati.  They'd need a day or two to get to Japan, so the 10th and 11th aren't likely, either.  Maybe August 6 to August 9 makes sense.

That's speculation, not fact. This is the internet; I recommend keeping a healthy skepticism about everything.  :)

Flac files of wavs.  Includes the cue sheet, a scan of the CD disc, and the three-page script for the disc jockey to read.

The location and month are taken from the script.  I did not find any press coverage confirming the dates or location.

For My Chemical Romance, the script says, "recorded in January, while the Christmas holiday was still fresh on everyone's mind." And they do a brief "Merry Christmas" song, but I'm skeptical. Who sings Christmas songs in January? I found a listing that mentions they played KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas at the Universal Amphitheater on December 12, 2004, which seems like a possible date.  The script is there in black and white, though, claiming a January date.  Make of it what you will.

Throughout the show, there were occasional profanities that were censored by backmasking - reversing the offending word. I reversed the censored words, restoring the original profanity.  There are two versions included: one is censored and represents the original broadcast, the second is an uncensored version.

From the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

We'll start with this quote...with "the Hooters having come close to selling out two nights at the Tower Theater (June 6-7), management feels the band should touring nationally, too.  So it looks like the Hooters will be joining Don Henley for the Southern and Midwest portion of his summer tour in late June."

As you can tell from the two night near sell-out and the rapturous audience reception on this recording, the Hooters were huge hometown heroes in Philadelphia heading into the summer of 1985. "And We Danced" was released earlier in May and would go to #28 nationally on the Billboard Hot 100. That summer, it was #1 in Philadelphia.

This show was recorded and syndicated just weeks before the Hooters appearance at Live Aid in Philadelphia on July 13, 1985.  The high-profile Live Aid concert was the first time most of the country (and the world) saw them live. To quote Bob Geldof in Rolling Stone, "Who the fuck are the Hooters?" Apparently, Bob wasn't aware of their huge Philly following and did not want them to open the Philadelphia portion of Live Aid.

But to Mr. Geldof's point, they were not known outside the area.  Three months after selling out the Tower, the Hooters headlined Wolfgang's in San Francisco, a 600 seat nightclub venue. The Tower has about 3,200 seats and they sold out two nights in June.  In October, they played the Tower again...and sold out five nights. That's 22,400 tickets in Philadelphia vs. 600 tickets in San Francisco.  And that's not counting that they played the night clubs in Philadelphia throughout the year, too.

The breakthrough led to national press coverage.  I've included a folder with articles for your consideration while you listen to the Hooters on the verge of national stardom.

As an ironic side note: "During a European tour back in the ’90s, Geldof opened for the Hooters. The irony was never discussed between the two parties. “We didn’t have a lot of contact with him, but we did several shows with Geldof and the Waterboys,” Hyman said. “We did get a bit of a chuckle about Geldof opening for us and, of course, we knew who he was.”

The Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at the O2 Arena in London, a benefit concert honoring the late songwriter and Atlantic Records founder, was originally scheduled to take place on November 26, 2007, but when Jimmy Page injured his finger, the event was rescheduled for several weeks later in December.
Then, on December 10, 2007, Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones reunited Led Zeppelin and played one final show in tribute to their friend.
Before their one-off show in 2007, the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin rehearsed for a year along with late drummer John Bonham‘s son Jason on drums. The last time the three core band members performed together was in 1995, with a five-song set during their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and before that on July 7, 1980, at the Eissporthalle in Berlin, Germany, months before Bonham’s death.
When tickets became available at a designated URL for the concert on September 14, 2007, the website immediately crashed after a million people registered and exceeded its bandwidth making it the largest demand for one show in history.
The concert broke the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest demand for tickets for a single music concert.

The event was part of Philadelphia's annual Freedom Festival, which had several events that day. This part was a concert at 8:30 PM at Benjamin Franklin Parkway dubbed the "Bringing Down The Walls" concert.  Melba Moore sang the National Anthem and "Raise Every Voice And Sing." Also playing were Jammin', a Soviet rock group, Petra Zieger from East Germany, and the Hooters and Bricklin.

Also appearing was former President Jimmy Carter who was given the Philadelphia Liberty Medal and $100,000.00 cash prize from Bell Atlantic Corporation.

A review of the show mentions the irony of a "Bringing Down The Walls" concert having iron gates that kept fans back "more than 100 yards from the stage" so they couldn't see the bands.

I can't confirm the date of the Humble Pie show, but here's an argument making the case for a possible date:

The stage announcer says, "all right L.A....are you ready..."

Around this time Humble Pie played Los Angeles area shows at:
Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA May 11, 1980
This isn't a likely source, it's too old.

Other possible dates are:
L.A. Sports Arena, May 12, 1981
Country Club, Reseda, CA May 30, 1981
Woodstock Concert Theatre, Anaheim, CA May 31, 1981

There's a live album called "California '81" available through BandCamp with three songs on this show, plus three additional tracks.  It's from the Reseda show which makes it very likely that these are May 30, 1981 and from the Country Club. If someone has that show and compare it, we may get a confirmed date.

On the runout grooves, Side 1 has the start of the word "Budweiser," but it's scratched out and replaced with "Busch."  It's likely there were two versions of the show produced with different sponsors.

I've always enjoyed the revitalized early 80's part of Mr. Bond's career.  Springsteen gave him a boost with a few songs and production assistance, but he's on his own here and sounds great.

Well, left the equipment recording and went to sleep. Good show, too bad it didn't last long, according to the press they finished it early because so few people stayed to see the show. The source is FM and you can hear it very well. The TV presenters and the comments from the radio announcers at the beginning, between songs and at the end are recorded.

Damn Yankees were touring as the second billed act behind Poison.  I couldn't find printed proof of the date, but it's accepted as July 5th on poisonfanclub.net.

While I didn't find a concert review, ad, or ticket stub, I included some of the general press coverage of the band from 1993.

Steve Cooper (105.9 KBPI Denver) and Mark Felsot (VP of Broadcast Productions for the Album Network/SFX Radio Network) host the show.

There is a short interview with Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw.

CD1 is 56 minutes long.  CD2 is 30 minutes long.

"Live From The House of Blues Presented By Pontiac Sunfire" was a syndicated radio show distributed on two cds, with concerts recorded at a House of Blues club (at the time, in Los Angeles, New Orleans, or Cambridge, MA).  The live music was interspersed with national commercials, and the House of Blues was promoted by short comments from patrons, or there were interviews with the artists. The syndicated radio show premiered on January 27, 1995 and appears to have run for a year, with the shows running once a week.

The shows don't turn up on EBAY very often, so the number of stations participating in the syndication was low, compared to shows like King Biscuit Flower Hour. Lisa Collins’ “In The Spirit” column in the September 16, 1995 issue of BILLBOARD says 120 stations carried it. I've only identified the following shows:

Show #2 Neville Brothers/Tinsley Ellis
Show #3 Koko Taylor
Show #4 George Thorogood (this show is in our archives)
Show #5 The Radiators / Allen Toussaint / Dr. John (this show)
Show #14 Tom Jones
Show #16 Doug Sahm
Show #21 Nighthawks/Savoy Brown  (this show is in our archives)
Show #51 Graham Parker/Junior Wells

I don't have these other shows (except where indicated); I've just seen them on EBAY or found references to them on the Internet.

Also in 1995, 26 live shows were televised on TBS (Turner Broadcast System). A news article says "Featured acts will include the Spin Doctors, Neville Brothers, They Might Be Giants, Public Enemy, Marshall Crenshaw, Jeff Healey and George Thorogood and the Destroyers."

The show was hosted by Pat St. John...who previously hosted "SuperGroups In Concert," and “A Night On The Road” shows in the early 1980s, and the "Live From Electric Ladyland" shows in the early 1990s. At the time, Pat was the morning man on WNEW-FM out of New York City.

Sam Eliot's Mustache Strikes Again!

This one is a local Philadelphia band. As I was 3,000 miles to the west, I had never heard of them, but they're very good.  "Shades Of Gray" has all the elements of a Top 40 hit.

I don't see any evidence they released anything on Discogs.  There is a Picture This band with two CDs out in '95 and '96, but they're probably not the same band as this.

Another from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection.

I found lots of local press coverage for this show. Conwell had just released his major label debut LP that month (August 1988, on Columbia Records).

On Newspapers.com, you can enter a keyword ("Tommy Conwell") and a date range ("Aug 1988)" and the results are plotted on a state map of the USA.  This is in effect a "heat map" of the coverage, letting you know where there was a lot of news about an artist.

For Conwell / Aug 1988, there were 47 mentions of him in PA, 21 in NJ, 9 in New York and 7 in Maryland.  In the rest of the country? A wire review of the LP turns up in NE and FL. Here in California, there's the same review...but Conwell gets mentioned in articles about Jules Shear, and in another about (of all people) Chubby Checker.  In the last case, Checker complains "I expected WMMR to play that (last) record," he continues.  "MMR didn't stand behind the Chub.  If it was Tommy Conwell, they would have played it.  If it was the Hooters.  If it was Beru Revue. I just felt like dirt."

Here in CA, those references flew right over our heads.
