We'll start with this quote...with "the Hooters having come close to selling out two nights at the Tower Theater (June 6-7), management feels the band should touring nationally, too. So it looks like the Hooters will be joining Don Henley for the Southern and Midwest portion of his summer tour in late June."
As you can tell from the two night near sell-out and the rapturous audience reception on this recording, the Hooters were huge hometown heroes in Philadelphia heading into the summer of 1985. "And We Danced" was released earlier in May and would go to #28 nationally on the Billboard Hot 100. That summer, it was #1 in Philadelphia.
This show was recorded and syndicated just weeks before the Hooters appearance at Live Aid in Philadelphia on July 13, 1985. The high-profile Live Aid concert was the first time most of the country (and the world) saw them live. To quote Bob Geldof in Rolling Stone, "Who the fuck are the Hooters?" Apparently, Bob wasn't aware of their huge Philly following and did not want them to open the Philadelphia portion of Live Aid.
But to Mr. Geldof's point, they were not known outside the area. Three months after selling out the Tower, the Hooters headlined Wolfgang's in San Francisco, a 600 seat nightclub venue. The Tower has about 3,200 seats and they sold out two nights in June. In October, they played the Tower again...and sold out five nights. That's 22,400 tickets in Philadelphia vs. 600 tickets in San Francisco. And that's not counting that they played the night clubs in Philadelphia throughout the year, too.
The breakthrough led to national press coverage. I've included a folder with articles for your consideration while you listen to the Hooters on the verge of national stardom.
As an ironic side note: "During a European tour back in the ’90s, Geldof opened for the Hooters. The irony was never discussed between the two parties. “We didn’t have a lot of contact with him, but we did several shows with Geldof and the Waterboys,” Hyman said. “We did get a bit of a chuckle about Geldof opening for us and, of course, we knew who he was.”
