Magic Sam - Live Copa Cabana Club 1966

Magic Sam - Big Bill's Copa Cabana Club
3258 West Roosevelt Road
Chicago IL
October 2, 1966
WOPA Broadcast @flac

*Original Notes*
While he was a DJ at Chicago's WOPA, William Henry Hill aka "Big Bill" Hill came up with the idea of broadcasting blues bands live from the West Side clubs. He started out at Silvio's, where he introduced Elmore James to Chicago. Other live broadcasts included Otis Rush, Mighty Joe Young, Freddie King, Koko Taylor and Chicago Slim. In the mid-1960s, Hill owned a night club, named the Copa Cabana. Big Bill recorded a jam session that was released on an album entitled "Blues at Big Bill's Copa Cabana" on Chess Records; that recording featured Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Otis Spann and Sonny Boy Williamson.

This show is sourced from a broadcast tape from one of Big Bill Hill's WOPA radio shows from his own Copa Cabana Club on Chicago's West Side. It is also known as the WOPA tape. It's undoubtably the same tape recorded by Bill Lindemann, which was used for 8 tracks on the Delmark commercial release, "Rockin' Wild In Chicago", although this one sounds several generations removed from the Delmark CD.

This tape was also subject to some very rough editing, which is quite audible, to remove between song stage talk, as well as most of Big Bill Hill's on-air chatter.

Band Lineup:
Magic Sam - guitar, vocals
Mac Thompson - bass guitar
Odie Payne, Jr. - drums
"Shakey Jake" Harris - harmonica, vocals

Masters of Reality is a hard rock group formed in 1981 by guitarist and singer Chris Goss and Tim Harrington in Syracuse, New York. The band is sometimes associated with the "Palm Desert Scene", which includes bands like Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age and many other stoner rock or (as they prefer to call it) "desert rock" bands. The band is named after the album Master of Reality by Black Sabbath.

The band's music has touched on many styles, ranging from hard rock to blues, from progressive rock to Beatlesque pop music.

Frontman Goss is also a notable producer (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, UNKLE, Soulwax, Melissa Auf der Maur, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster) and has contributed to many other bands in the Palm Desert Scene and beyond.

Tina Turner - Westwood One Budweiser Concert Hour BC 85-06 (Chicago, 1984)

The Budweiser Concert Hour was a one hour radio syndicated by Westwood One. I've seen B.C.H. shows from 1981 until 1986, and it seems to have been bi-weekly (26 shows per year).  The artists were primarily 1980's R&B, with a few holdover artists from the 60's and 70's.  These shows don't seem to turn up as often as the "In Concert" or "Superstars In Concert" shows, so it's likely the total number of copies pressed up was lower.

This one features Tina Turner from 1984, as she was making her big comeback on the U.S. charts.  There are several bootleg CD's that include this material, but with two additional songs not included here ("Help" and "Legs").  So...this might have originally been from a longer radio broadcast.  Does anyone know?

The New Yardbirds - London Blues

*Excerpt from Jobe's book little known rock facts

Robert Plant was at a crossroads. Should he keep his job at Bill's petrol, where he was known as one of the best mechanics in England and give up his lucrative pay packet or should he join up with the relativity known Jimmy Page and become the singer in the fledgling new band he was forming. After speaking to the owner of the gas station a Mr. Harvey Wiensteen they had come to a compromise. Robert could take some time off to give the new upstart band a chance. And if they failed he could return to his job. However Mr. Wiensteen wanted something in return. He wanted the young Mr. Plant to promote the gas station at all the shows. Robert knew Jimmy Page would never go for this. So in a moment of inspiration Robert decided to re-name some of the songs he had been working on. Good Times Bad Times now became Good Tires Bad Tires, I Can't Quit You Baby changed to I Can't Find My Torque Wrench. Communication Breakdown had been changed to Transmission Breakdown and finally How Many More Times became How Many More Fill-Ups. Well needless to say the band took off and the rest is history. @320 See Scans
