This is also attributed to January 7, 1984.  Examination of newspapers reveals that a recording of the show was broadcast on BBC Radio One on that date, but the concert took place on October 26, 1983. I've included clippings proving the date.

Also issued as BBC Transcription Services CN 4304/S In Concert 321 and also as BBC Transcription TCDC 0052 Classic In Concert 49.

UB40 was touring to promote their fourth album "Labour Of Love," which consisted of ten covers of the band's favorite Jamaican oldies. The set list of this show has five of those covers ("Keep On Moving," "Johnny Too Bad" "Sweet Sensation," "Please Don't Make Me Cry," Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby" (also covered by the Rolling Stones in 1976).

There are also two newspaper reviews in the Artwork folder.

I did this one a while ago, so I didn't look at the runout grooves.  I'll track those down and add 'em later.

I'm heading off this weekend to see Los Lobos with my wife, grandson, brother, two children, and my ex-wife, so I figured I'd jump the gun and put this up even though there's no runout grooves.

====

Someone at Westwood One must have thought "Two roots rock bands with Spanish names are a great idea for our In Concert show!"

Well, it WAS a great idea.

Both shows took place at the Kentish Town and Country Club in London, and both were edited down from longer concerts.  Besides the U.S. Westwood One show, both were pressed up as LPs for the BBC Transcription Services.

But as usual, we have a Scooby Doo Rock and Roll Mystery: What was the full set list at the Town and Country show?

The Los Lobos show was broadcast twice by Westwood One, as 87-12, and also later the same year as 87-26 (which is in our archives).  The BBC also issued it as BBC Transcription Service In Concert 408. There is also a version posted at Archive.org.  There's another version on Guitars101. There's also a version that claims to be taken from the original radio station reels. Some have songs that are unique to that version.

I usually spend hours trying to make sense of this stuff, but I'm throwing in the towel on this one.  All of the versions have good sound.  So, if you like this, download the other Los Lobos Westwood One show from our archives and go look on the internet for the other four versions.  They're easy to find.

Commercials:

There's a note in pencil next to the first commercial that says "L. Mack "Budman" "

So...is it Lonnie Mack?  Or the Fabulous Thunderbirds?  We had an astute reader figure out that the Bud Man Boogie was Johnny Winter....do any of these four commercials remind you of a band or a singer?

This is chaptered from a CD-r copy of the original syndicated radio discs that was archived by our pal Sam Eliot's Mustache, back before we started documenting the runout grooves and scanning the disc labels.  He sends 'em to me and I removed the clicks n' pops and chapter the songs and announcements.

The original broadcast was live on November 15, 1979.   In the U.S.A., more than 170 FM stations broadcast the concert carried to them by AT&T's Long Lines System, sponsored by Pabst Brewing Co.  Satellite transmission brought the concert to Canada, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy, France.  The U.S. Armed Forces Radio carried it, too. Listening parties were set up at American colleges.  The estimated audience was 25,000,000 and was claimed to be the "biggest audience in history."

As big as this was, Foreigner's concert at the Civic Center Coliseum in Birmingham, Alabama a few weeks later was cancelled due to low ticket sales.

This copy was digitized from a Canadian syndicated broadcast, distributed on vinyl records. We're not clear on the relation of this to the original broadcast, except that it must have been distributed later. As is typical of Canadian syndications, there are no commercials on the discs.  Commercials would have been inserted by the local radio station.

I've included press coverage of the original broadcast.

We've got all four disc labels scanned at 300 dots per inch!  And the two page cue sheet!

But wait, there's more!  We have the original script for you to read!  Yes, in the privacy of your own home, you can practice being a radio announcer!  You can pause the recording and do the "open!"  You can read the "close!" Impress your friends! You'll stand out at the party when you show off your professional radio announcer skills!

------

The script says "recorded live at Nichols Arena in Denver Colorado, in May 1981."

Wiki says:
"McNichols Sports Arena was an indoor arena located in Denver, Colorado, United States. Located adjacent to Mile High Stadium and completed in 1975, at a cost of $16 million, it seated 16,061 for hockey games and 17,171 for basketball games.

It was named after Denver mayor William H. McNichols Jr., who served from 1968 to 1983."

It was demolished in 1999, just 24 years after it was built.

We've got a newspaper clipping that confirms the date and venue.

Blotto has a website at:  https://blotto.net/index.html

The website has everything you'll need to know about the band, including Blotto merchandise.

The short version of their story is: Blotto was a regionally popular band from the Albany area in New York that mixed humor with a party band sound.  The band issued several independent EPs and an album, and received national exposure when their video for "I Wanna Be A Lifeguard" was aired on MTV. They opened for Blue Oyster Cult on a tour.  In spite of the national exposure, they were never signed to a major label contract.

I found print ads for The Chance Club & Restaurant that show Blotto was booked in January, March, July, September, October, and November in 1982, plus some press coverage.

I've included a bit of press coverage.  Yes, back in the olden days we read things written by humans instead of generated by computers.

I was unfamiliar with both of these bands but enjoyed giving them a spin on the old Victrola.

We've got 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, all six disc labels, a newspaper print ad for a ticket broker that proves Winwood played two nights at Great Woods Performing Arts Center on August 21 and 22, 1988.  There's no evidence which date (or if both) was the source of the recording.

This set of tracks was broadcast three times by Westwood One.  The first broadcast was 88-G broadcast in December 1988, followed by this show (89-23), and then the final broadcast as 90-03.  I put up 89-23 back in 2013 and it's still up in our archives. If you've got that one, you don't need this version unless you want to collect 'em all for the commercials.  I've tossed in the print ad for 88-G, even though this isn't from that particular syndication.

Clad in a blue-green glazed architectural terra-cotta tile and situated diagonal to the street corner, the complex is considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States.

The entrance to the Wiltern Theatre is flanked by large vertical neon signs, while patrons approach the ticket booth set back among colorful terrazzo paving. The Wiltern's interior was designed by G. Albert Lansburgh and is renowned for its Art Deco design containing decorative plaster and tile work along with colorful murals painted by Anthony Heinsbergen. The most dramatic element of the design is the sunburst on the ceiling of the auditorium, with each ray its own Art Deco skyscraper—Lansburgh's vision of the future of Wilshire Boulevard. When the Wiltern first opened, it also housed the largest theater pipe organ in the western United States

Originally built in 1931, the Wiltern was designed by architect Stiles O. Clements of Morgan, Walls & Clements,[6] the city's oldest architectural firm.[citation needed] The Wiltern Theatre was originally designed as a vaudeville theater and initially opened as the Warner Brothers Western Theater, the flagship for the theater chain. The building and theater were built by the William Simpson Construction Company.[7] After closing a year later, the theater reopened in the mid-1930s and was renamed the Wiltern Theatre for the major intersection which it faces (Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue).[8][9]

In 1956, the building and theater were sold to the Franklin Life Insurance Company of Springfield, Illinois. The Los Angeles chapter of the American Theater Organ Enthusiasts worked to restore the theater's 37-rank Kimball pipe organ—reputed to be the largest one in Los Angeles at the time—and held recitals there through the late 1960s and into the mid-1970s.

However, the owners ignored the landmark building, and by the late 1970s, the Wiltern had fallen into disrepair. Only the intervention of a group of local preservationists saved the complex from being demolished on two occasions in the late 1970s, when the owners filed for demolition permits.[10] (The preservation of the Wiltern was one of the Los Angeles Conservancy's first victories in its fight to preserve the architectural heritage of the city.)

My cassette has this as Yubin Chokin Hall, but Setlist.fm says it's Nippon Budokan.  I got it from a trader in Tokyo who had it at Yubin Chokin Hall.  The two venues are about four miles apart.  As we all know, just because it's on the Internet doesn't make it true, but I want to let you know when I spot these anomalies.

Plus, I wasn't able to find OTHER dates in Japan during March 1987, which is weird.   Shouldn't there be other dates easily spotted on the Internet?

The show seems to be edited down from a longer performance as Vega mentions performing "Solitude Standing," which is not on the tape.  The Intro was clearly added after the performance.  There's an introduction in Japanese, which might hold a clue as to the venue, but I don't hear either "Yubin Chokin" or "Budokan."

UPDATE:  We're now sure that this was recorded at the Yubin Chokin Hall.

Richard Marx recorded at The Bottom Line, NYC, NY on July 11, 1987.
Squeeze recorded at the Apollo Theatre Manchester on September 20, 1987.

Richard Marx was featured on two Westwood One shows. Westwood One In Concert 87-17, a show split with Bruch Hornsby, was broadcast on August 31, 1987.  This show (88-04) was his second and final Westwood One appearance. The shows are nearly identical.  All the tracks from 87-17 are repeated on 88-04, and with one additional track ("Endless Summer Nights") added to the show.

"Have Mercy" features guitar quotes from "Layla."

The Squeeze tracks are all on BBC In Concert 426 with a total of 15 tracks, as compared to the 10 on the Westwood One show.

The Squeeze show was part of the Manchester Festival, "a promotion by Manchester City Council for the people of Manchester."  The Festival ran from the 18th through the 27th at multiple venues and featured a diverse set of acts, including the Chieftains, Sweet Honey In The Rock, and Georgie Fame.

You get 300 dpi scans of all four disc labels and the cue sheet!  Hurrah!
Actual teenage slang
from the 1970s.

Two solid sets from two great bands from Ireland and England.  Thin Lizzy's from Dublin and Def Leppard hails from Sheffield.

Thin Lizzy is apparently sourced from two different concerts.  BBC Transcription 274 has Renegade, Hollywood, Killer On The Loose, The Boys Are Back In Town, and Baby Drives Me Crazy on it, supposedly sourced from Hammersmith on Nov. 25, 1981. Some resources on the Internet say the tracks are Nov. 26.  Either way, that leaves the other four tracks as likely from 1983.

The Def Leppard is early in their career.  Their first gig was the prior summer of 1978.  The earliest newspaper reference I found on Newspapers.com was on July 6, 1979, just a few weeks before this show.

On the commercials:

I need your help.  The blues-rock "Bud Man Boogie" commercial sounds familiar but I can't place the band or the singer.  Come on, one of Our Beloved Audience must have some idea of who these jaspers are or perhaps can make a suggestion. Any ideas?

Three ads about your breath: Dentyne, Doublemint, and Listerine.  Proper dental hygiene is important! If you haven't flossed today, please do so.

Bad Dreams was a 1988 American supernatural mystery slasher film co-written and directed by Andrew Fleming and starring Jennifer Rubin, Bruce Abbott, E. G. Daily, Dean Cameron, Harris Yulin and Richard Lynch.  I've never seen it.  Does anyone in Our Beloved Voodoo Wagon audience remember it?

Thanks to the ears of Anonymous, we think we've solved the mystery of who sings "the Bud Man Boogie!  We are sure it's JOHNNY WINTER.

Great Googa-Mooga!  It's the RECORD GROOVES!
KB∙464∙A   MCR Joe
KB∙464∙B   MCR Joe
KB∙464∙C   MCR Joe

Note: the "Joe" is a cursive script squiggle, also interpreted as Bre, gre, 8re, SRE or Joe. MCR stands for "Master Cutting Room," and the squiggle for Joe Brescio, the mastering engineer. As his first name is "Joe" and last name starts with "Bre" it's possible he intended it to be both.

ĐR̃äⒻṬëŕṽöï digitized 2026 as part of the work of the Collective For Live Music.

Setlist.fm says Greg Kihn played the Arlington Theatre on "March 20, 1983" and adds "Broadcast for the King Biscuit Flower Hour on 3/27/1983; approximate date of performance."

The date is "approximate," but let's apply some logic: Recorded 3/20.  Broadcast on 3/27.  Seven days to master the recording, press the LPs, and distribute the vinyl discs to radio stations nationwide by the U.S. Postal Service.  That can't be right.

So, it's off to Newspapers.com to see what I can find...and lucky us, there's a review in the Ventura County Star Free Press of Thursday March 3, 1983 that says the show was held on the prior Friday, which makes it February 25, 1983.  Further exploration in February finds not one but TWO ads for the show, confirming the date.

The vinyl on this was so minty I could have made a mojito out of it.

This one was not available in streaming audio on Concert Vault. Why they had some shows and not others is a mystery to me.

Flac files of wavs. Includes all the commercials but tracked so you can delete them easily.  The test tone is included but I've numbered is "OO" as I'm pretty sure you're not going to listen to it.
With these syndicated shows, they usually put the "promo" ad spots at the end of the show. This one has them at the end of Side A, which breaks up the show if you're listening straight through.  At one time I would have moved 'em to the end to make it more listenable but these days I'm taking an archival approach, documenting it as exactly as close to the record as possible.  If the past was stupid, well, that's just the way it was.

You get 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, promo sheet, all four disc labels, and a copy of the concert review from the aforementioned newspaper.

"Keep On Walkin'" does not appear to have been released.
