Nick Lowe & Rockpile, June 7, 1978 - KSAN-FM

In the spring of ’78, Rockpile barnstormed across America as the opening act of a tour with Elvis Costello and Mink DeVille. They roared into San Francisco’s Winterland ballroom for the last night of the tour, primed and ready to blast out a tight, smokin’ hot half-hour of rock and roll. The band cranks the energy up to the infamous “eleven” right from the get-go, barely breaking the flow to introduce the band.

Collector’s Note: A special orange vinyl 12” promotional single was pressed to promote the tour. It was an unusual “dual label” release, with a red Columbia label for the Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe sides, and a purple Capitol label on the Mink DeVille side.

This version is digitized from a master copy of a KSAN-FM broadcast recorded by my friend GWH. The sound quality is excellent. On a personal note, I was at this show, right down in front about ten feet in front of the stage (and I think GWH was with me….). At the end of the show, the deejay identifies it as being from “Nick Lowe, recorded live at Winterland, June 1978,” so I believe this is from a later re-broadcast of the show.

I’ve listed this as “Nick Lowe & Rockpile” as that was the billing that night. Rockpile was a bit of a contractual mess, with Nick Lowe signed to Columbia and Dave Edmunds signed to Swan Song. As such, they toured with either Nick or Dave’s name featured. Lowe takes the lead vocal on five songs, Dave Edmunds on the remaining three.

Buena Vista Social Club guitarist Galban dies...

** ADDS DATE AND LOCATION ** In this Oct. 2010 photo released by Montuno Productions America, Miguel Galban poses in a promotional photograph in Havana, Cuba. Galban, a Grammy-winning Cuban guitarist who rose to international fame as a member of the Buena Vista Social Club, has died of a heart attack in Havana on Thursday July 7, 2011. He was 80. (AP Photo/Montuno Productions America, Alejandro Perez)

HAVANA (AP) — Manuel Galban, a Grammy-winning Cuban guitarist who rose to international fame as a member of the Buena Vista Social Club, has died of a heart attack in Havana. He was 80.
An article in Communist Party newspaper Granma on Friday noted Galban's passing the previous day and called him a "master of the guitar."
"It is a very sad day for Cuban music and fans of Cuban Music," said Daniel Florestano, longtime manager of both Galban and the Buena Vista Social Club, in a statement issued by Galban's publicist. "Galban's enormous impact worldwide with his unique guitar sound and warm smile will be missed by many."
Born in 1931 in Gibara, in the eastern province of Holguin, Galban made his professional debut in 1944, according to the statement. In 1963 he joined Los Zafiros, Spanish for "Sapphires," which fused styles as varied as bolero, calypso and rock with Cuban "filin" music, which comes from the word "feeling."
The group became one of the island's most popular until it disbanded in 1972.
Galban spent the next three years as head of Cuba's national music ensemble.
He then formed a group known as Batey, which performed throughout the world "representing Cuba in numerous acts of solidarity," Granma said.
In the 1990s he became part of the Buena Vista Social Club project, a group of elderly, sometimes retired, musicians who were living quietly in Cuba before U.S. guitarist and producer Ry Cooder brought them together.
The album was an international smash hit and later the subject of a documentary by filmmaker Wim Wenders.
In 2003 Galban teamed up with Cooder to record Mambo Sinuendo. It won a Grammy the following year for best pop instrumental album.
Galban follows others from the Buena Vista Social Club who have already died, including Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez, Cachaito Lopez and vocalist Pio Leyva.

The Rolling Stones played Giants Stadium in East Rutherford on August 12, 14, 15, and 17, 1994.In December 2010, the Westwood One Superstars In Concert syndicated radio show featured songs drawn from those performances. The songs chosen for inclusion by Westwood One are pretty much what you’d expect from a radio show – the usual big hits. It’s the Stones, it’s sourced directly from the original radio disc, and I included a scan of the cue sheet. I can’t find anything that indicates that Westwood One broadcast material from Giants Stadium prior to 2010.

Pink Floyd - Live Miami 1987

Pink Floyd - Miami 1987
Live at the Orange Bowl Miami,FL.
November 1, 1987
Soundboard @192

*Original Notes*
"Thank you, good evening, well it's not really a good evening. I thought it was supposed to be sunny and warm here all the time. Rain wasn't in the contract. Anyway we're gonna play a lot of new stuff for you from the new album in this half and a bunch of old... oldies but goodies later on for you, so if everyone prays a little bit that the weather holds we'll all have a good time."

That's what Dave Gilmour said before diving into Learning To Fly at the Orange Bowl in Miami on November 1,1987. There are fans who feel that Pink Floyd are a lesser band with the absence of Roger Waters, who had left in December 1985. While the solo Waters released Radio KAOS in 1987, Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright released A Momentary Lapse Of Reason in September 1987 (which some fans felt was more of a Gilmour "solo" album).

As Gilmour mentioned, the first half of the show (Disc One) features the live version of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. If the album was not lauded as a critical album, there was enough fan support for the album and tour for them to be considered commercial successes. For this show, rain or no rain, it is still a strong performance with Gilmour in fine form. Overall, these soundboard tracks are excellent.

Captain Beefheart
1980-12-05
Paradise Rock Club
Boston,MA

This is a complete Captain Beefheart Show(1:43:00).

What more to say about the show?

The band is in an excellant form(I love the instrumentals like 'A Carrot Is As Close' and 'One Red Rose') and the Don is doing fine, too! The setlist contains songs from all their career. From'Sheriff Of Hongkong' to the 'Rose' to 'Big Eyed Beans' to 'Bat Chain Puller',although all in all you can say, there is a lot of 'Lick My Decals Off,Baby' stuff around! And that`s not a bad sign, right?

The band is playing with Dr.Snyder and not with Zoot Horn Rollo!

Sound quality is very good(+)
