Elizabeth Fraser and Cocteau Twins - BBC 1984

(photo and concert made available by Past Daily)

Ending up the work-week with a taste of ethereal tonight. Cocteau Twins were one of those milestone bands who pretty much changed the face of Electronica forever and gave the world Dreamscape
as a result.

Fronted by the atmospheric and hypnotic voice of Elizabeth Fraser, Cocteau Twins made an indelible impression on numerous bands following in their footsteps. It triggered the genre of Shoegaze and fit the 80s perfectly.
...............

Liz is the vocalist and lyricist in Cocteau Twins, and co-founded the group in her hometown in 1981 with her long-time companion Robin Guthrie and their friend Will Heggie. At the time, she was all of 17 years-old, and had never really thought of herself as a singer. Robin and Will noticed her dancing at a club one night, and asked her to join their band.

Her unique vocal stylings and mysterious, indecipherable lyrics have generated much debate over the years, but she has often been circumspect on the matter when asked about it.

Now among the world's most acclaimed singers, she parted ways professionally with Cocteau Twins in 1998 to pursue her solo ambitions. Liz has appeared as a guest-vocalist on numerous other recordings with other artists, has performed for film soundtracks, and was invited by Peter Gabriel to lend her spectacular voice to the UK's "Milennium Dome Project" in 1999.

Liz has two daughters—Lucy and Lily—and makes her home in Bristol, England with her partner, musician Damon Reece.

Two sites are currently devoted to Liz,
www.elizabethfraser.com and www.elizabethfraser.uni.cc.

A must read interview:
Elizabeth Fraser: the Cocteau Twins and me...

One critic describing her singing – to her embarrassment – as "the voice of God."

Elizabeth Fraser:  I'm so excited...

Eleventh Dream Day - Lived To Tell 1991 {Out of Print}

Eleventh Dream Day - Lived To Tell
Studio recordings @ 320
{Out of Print}

Recorded, as the credits state and a photo in the album artwork confirms, "in a tobacco barn on the Niland's farm in Cub Run, Kentucky." Whether that provided the air of ripping, fiery country-goes-to-hell guitar work that permeates Lived to Tell may not be known, but clearly the setting didn't hurt the band any. Whatever pressure from Atlantic came down to record something user friendly, Eleventh Dream Day stuck to its guns with fine results on its second major-label effort. Rizzo and Beveridge Bean make a fantastic pair of front singers, strong without being overbearing, on joint harmonies hitting something not far off from the brilliant combination of X's John Doe and Exene Cervenka. "I Could Be Lost" isn't merely a great example of that but one of the album's best songs, leading into a blasting instrumental break and brilliant guitar solo while the band raves it up behind. When Beveridge Bean takes over lead, as on "You Know What It Is," nothing about the intensity or ability differs -- Freakwater's frontwoman had already proved herself times over before that band had issued a note. Figi's electrified lapsteel, as noted, adds fierce explosive power to songs like "Dream of a Sleeping Sheep." Together, he and Rizzo kick out the jams so righteously it almost hurts -- the rise of grunge in public eyes may have made people think then of Neil Young, but it's clear he already had two solid disciples. Even slower numbers like "Frozen Mile" crackle with a sharp energy. A few guest performances don't hurt at all -- some tenor sax on "There's This Thing" and both calliope and cello on the waltz-time "Daedalus" -- but mostly this is Eleventh Dream Day ripping through a set of smart songs with all the wired passion one could ever want.

Talk Talk - Live Utrecht, NL

FM Source @flac

The most chilling version of "Tomorrow Started" ever recorded.

Set List
1-Such A Shame
2-My Foolish Friend
3-Have You Heard The News
4-The Party's Over
5-Dum Dum Girl
6-Tomorrow Started
7-Its My Life
8-Talk Talk

Pop-O-Pies "Bootleg" cassette tape, circa 1981

Pop-O-Pies
Bootleg (band released cassette tape)

01. Truckin' (studio)
02. The Catholics Hitchhike To California
03. Trucks (live)
04. The Pop-O-Pies Are Bigger Than Jesus Christ
05. Oh Yeah We Play Slow Songs
06. Everything Sucks And It's Not Going To Get Any Better

While this cassette was entitled "Bootleg," it was released by the band, distributed in a plastic sandwich bag along with a photo-copied track listing.  The version of "Truckin'" is the same basic track as on The White EP, but without all of the overdubs.  This version was the most requested track on San Francisco's college radio station KUSF for several months.

Tracks 1, 3, 5, and 6 are covers of the Grateful Dead's "Truckin', played in a pop-punk style, generally fast but also in a sludgy slowed down version.  The cassette cuts off right in the middle of the last song; that's not a mistake, that's the way it is on the cassette.

Track 4 is an interview on KUSF with the Grateful Dead's version of "Truckin'" and the Pop-O-Pies cover playing at the same time.

The Los Angeles Times called them "the worst band in California."  That's high praise....

Flac files of wavs....while this is right off the original cassette, this is definitely "lo-fi."

The groovy runout grooves say:
 MY-6A   MCR JOE
 MY-6B   MCR JOE
 MY-6C   MCR JOE
 MY-6D   MCR JOE
 MY-6E   MCR JOE
 MY-6F   MCR JOE

Note: the "Joe" is a cursive script squiggle, also interpreted as Bre, gre, SRE or Joe.
MCR stands for "Master Cutting Room," and the squiggle for Joe Brescio, the mastering engineer. As his first name is "Joe" and last name starts with "Bre" it's possible he intended it to be both.

UPDATED March 2025. I added some newspaper clippings...from both possible venues.

Flac files of wavs, includes 300 dpi scans of all six disc labels, cue sheets, print ads, your very own "souvenir t-shirt" and a six-pack of Mello Yello.  I also added some general press coverage of Jefferson Starship for your reading pleasure.

Where and when was this recorded?

On the Mello Yello show, announcer Rick Dees announces the venue as the Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, which took place on July 1, 1981.

The King Biscuit Flower Hour (also produced by DIR) syndicated a show attributed to Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York, recorded on June 24, 1981.  King Biscuit broadcast tracks from that show twice, with two different set lists.  The first broadcast was July 19, 1981, and the second on a "Best of the Biscuit" show January 3, 1982. The Best of the Biscuit version is up in streaming audio on YouTube, and a comparison with the Mello Yello Presents reveals the tracks are identical.

All of the songs from both versions of the KBFH shows are on the Mello Yello version.

There are four songs unique to the Mello Yello show:

Fast Buck Freddie, Mary, Light The Sky On Fire, and Dance With The Dragon.

Wolfgang's Concert Vault lists this as Saratoga but doesn't include the unique songs from the Mello Yello broadcast. I don't detect any change in the ambience of the recording on those songs, but both venues are outdoors so "room ambience" is probably not a good guide.

The show is most likely from one venue, but I don't know which is correct. I think it is most likely to be from Saratoga. The two shows in question took place June 24 and July 1. The first KBFH broadcast was July 19. Given that they must edit, master the recording, press the discs, and ship them nationwide to radio stations, it's likely that it's the earlier show.  Three weeks lead time is more likely than two weeks lead time.

As some of the  Mello Yello songs are unique and not on the KBFH versions or the streaming audio, it's also possible that tracks from Merriweather Post Pavilion were added to the Saratoga tracks for the later Mello Yello broadcast, and they chose to identify the entire show as from that venue.

The King Biscuit (July 19, 1981 broadcast date) set list:
1. Somebody To Love (also on Mello Yello and on the Best of the Biscuit)
2. Ride The Tiger  (also on Mello Yello and on the Best of the Biscuit)
3. Stranger  (also on Mello Yello and on Best of the Biscuit)
4. Find Your Way Back (also on Mello Yello and on Best of the Biscuit)
(missing Fast Buck Freddie, which is unique to the  Mello Yello show)
(missing Girl With The Hungry Eyes, which shows up on the Best of the Biscuit)
5. Save Your Love (also on Mello Yello)
6. Alien (also on Mello Yello)
(missing Mary, which is unique to the  Mello Yello show)
7. Jane (also on Mello Yello and on the Best of the Biscuit)
8. Mistreater (also on Mello Yello and on the Best of the Biscuit)
(missing Light The Sky On Fire, which is unique to the  Mello Yello show)
(missing Dance With The Dragon, which is unique to the  Mello Yello show)

10. White Rabbit (also on Mello Yello and on Best of the Biscuit)
11. Rock & Roll Music (also on Mello Yello)

The KING BISCUIT Best of the Biscuit (Jan. 3, 1982 broadcast date) set list

2. Ride The Tiger (also on Mello Yello and earlier KBFH show)

ABOUT THE MELLO YELLO shows:
The "Mello Yello Presents" syndicated broadcasts were prepared by the DIR Broadcasting Corporation, the same company that did the King Biscuit Flower Hour for the ABC Radio Networks.  In some markets, the concerts were sponsored by Sprite instead of Mello Yello.

I've only seen shows from 1981 and 1982, so it looks like the Mello Yello sponsorship was short-lived.

This Jefferson Starship show has the code MY-6 scratched in the run-out groove of all three records on both sides.  That would seem to indicate that it's the sixth in the series, but I found the following shows listed in Billboard.  In terms of air dates, it's the fourth show.

May 1, 1981 - Christopher Cross, Leo Sayer, ABC Contemporary
May 2, 1981 - Rod Stewart, ABC FM Network
May 3, 1981 - Anne Murray, ABC Entertainment

Oct. 9, 1981 - Jefferson Starship, ABC Contemporary
Oct. 10, 1981 - Moody Blues, ABC FM Network
Oct. 11, 1981 - Charlie Daniels, ABC Entertainment

April 10, 1982 - Genesis (this is also subtitled "Super Groups In Concert" on the disc label)

It's not clear if the 1982 was part of the same series.  The 1981 shows were part of an ad campaign that ran across three different ABC networks, each targeting a different demographic.  While the shows ran over a single weekend, they ran on sequential nights. "ABC did some research on the May 1-3 series and found that one in four teens listened to at least part of one of these three concerts."

ABOUT THE SOFT DRINK: Mello Yello is a high-caffeinated, citrus-flavored soft drink produced and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company which was introduced on March 1, 1979 to compete with PepsiCo's Mountain Dew.

THE BAND:
Grace Slick - vocals, keyboards
Mickey Thomas - vocals
Paul Kantner - guitar, vocals
Craig Chaquico - guitar
David Freiberg - keyboards
Pete Sears - bass
Aynsley Dunbar - drums

of Rolling Stones projects since the mid-80s), and mad scratching by Grand Mixer D.St (these days known as Grand Mixer DXT).

The Beatles Anthology Outtakes Volume 1 @ 224Kbps

Ok wrestling fans, in my never ending quest to keep you on your toes, I am going to do all six of these discs in a new way. I'm sure you remember the old Paul is dead thing, well I'm doing that with these, and since my last Beatles post went over so well I'm going to give you clues as to where to find the links I'm gonna hide. For this first one (part one) the link will be at the bottom of this post. But for the second part of this post you're gonna have to find it with the clues I provide. Clue #1 "When Paul was killed in the car crash, when you looked at the collage on the Sgt.Pepper's album cover underneath Bob Dylan's mustache there are a pair of bloody old boots that Paul was supposedly wearing when he died, you can't miss them, they are the floppy ones that were kept in the box."                                                                              See scans for details.
