 On April 6, 1974, 200,000 music fans descended on the Ontario Motor Speedway (Ontario, California) for one of the last rock festivals of the era: California Jam. The event featured Rare Earth, Earth Wind and Fire, the Eagles with guest Jackson Browne, Seals and Crofts, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Rare Earth was the opening act.

Another tape that I got in trade.  Unknown generation...but it's low, not much in the way of hiss.

The date of the show is confirmed by a newspaper clipping (included).

The last song ("Great Balls of Fire") is slowly faded out, then cuts off before the fade is complete.  

I've checked set lists I found on the Intertoobs, and "Great Balls" was the last song, so we're not missing anything else after it.

There were two sets at Tut's that night, and there's supposedly also an early set that was also broadcast by WXRT-FM.

Rock and Roll Geography
As you know, I run searches to find faint footprints from the past are out there on the Internet.  Searches for common names like "Richard Thompson" turn up a lot of results; he was married in Plano, TX, he's on the Memorial Hospital board, his car hit a tree...all of them not OUR Richard Thompson.

Searches for "Tut's" are problematic as the Optical Character Recognition programs have trouble with blurry scans and yellowing newsprint, returning results for the abbreviation "Tues".

 I tried looking for the address of Tut's at 959 W. Belmont, and looked on Google Maps...and was gobsmacked to recognize the building.  I've never been to Chicago but hey, that's now Blaze Pizza, and that used to be the Quiet Knight club that turned up on our Randy Newman and Bob Marley shows already posted here.  While I didn't find anything with those searches, I did turn up a review from a few days prior. It's from across the state line in Wisconsin and had a list of band members.

Okay, gang, this one is from the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection.  I put up the Guitars 101 version of this show back in 2022, but it was an edited version without the commercials.  This is the full show, from a different digitization. 

On that post, I identified the Gamma portion as the Old Waldorf on July 13, 1980. That was the date posted on the Guitars101 version and I accepted it without further investigation.

For this version, I searched for newspaper coverage to prove the recording dates.  I found a listing confirming Cougar, but nothing came up in a search for Gamma in San Francisco in July 1980.  

I went to the San Francisco Chronicle's DATEBOOK tab section and looked at the ads for the Old Waldorf in July 1980.  The ad on July 6 had Crime on July 11, the Only Ones on July 12, and then no shows until Krokus on July 17.  No show is listed for July 13. 

I checked the DATEBOOK section for Sunday July 13 on the slim chance a show was announced at the very last minute, and there's nothing in the Old Waldorf ad about Gamma.

Further research uncovered showed that Gamma played the Old Waldorf on February 9, 1980.  I've included the January/February ads that prove that date, and the July ads that don't have Gamma listed as playing.

This was the first concert by Mellencamp on the nationally syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show.  KBFH did not repeat any of the five tracks on future KBFH broadcasts.  The show is not posted on Concert Vault.  The only current source is the original vinyl discs.

Of note is how fast KBFH managed to get live music pressed up.  The Cougar show was recorded on October 2nd and was edited, mastered, pressed, sent by US Mail and played by the radio stations on December 14.

Besides the ads for the shows, I included a folder of 1980 press coverage on Mr. Cougar-Mellencamp so that you have something to read while you listen to the music.

This is off of a 1st generation cassette that I got in trade.  I think it's off of a reel to reel recorded off the air, but I'm not 100% sure of that.  It's not sourced from the download from Guitars 101...although to my ears, they sound about the same. 

If you've got that, you may not need this one.  However, to sweeten the deal and dangle some bait in front of you, I've got newspapers!  Reviews of the show from the Berkeley Gazette and the San Francisco Examiner, plus a print ad for the Old Waldorf!  

The print ad gives me one of those "WTF" moments, as I see that Ian Dury was the opening act for Lou Reed.  Why didn't I go to this show?

This one has Mr. Dan Hicks reuniting with his classic Hot Licks line-up, featuring violin virtuoso Sid Page, and Lickettes Maryanne Price and Naomi Ruth Eisenberg, bass player Jaime Leopold, with John Girton (guitar) added to the line-up.

The last four songs were with his band at the time, The Acoustic Warriors. 

I actually met Ms. Eisenberg one afternoon over in the Sunset District at my drummer's apartment.  Yes, shameless name-dropping is not beneath me. 

I tracked down an article from the Austin American Statesman of September 26, 1991, and that's the lone piece o' junk in the Artwork file.

If you've never heard Dan Hicks, he's an interesting anomaly of the San Francisco ballroom scene.  He was in the Charlatans, the band that set-up the "San Francisco scene" with their residency at the Red Dog Inn in Virginia City, Nevada in 1965.  I made the "pilgrimage" to the Red Dog last summer for the first time. 

In terms of distance and time, it's as if Merseybeat started at Bournemouth in 1961.

Anyway...the Charlatans didn't amount to jack-squat, they're not really worth tracking down and listening to, but good for them for starting a "scene."  What's odd is that Dan Hicks was the drummer for the Charlatans...and his new band didn't have a drummer.

The late, great Amy Winehouse in concert on 7/10/2004 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, NL. Recorded and broadcast by Dutch FM station Radio 2 in the Netherlands. Amy was only 20 years old at the time of this performance, on tour to promote her debut album, Frank.

Amy Winehouse was an English singer and songwriter. She was known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, reggae and jazz. This is one of Amy Winehouse's first performances in the Netherlands. At the time she was makIng a name in the UK and not yet the international star she was to become in later years.

Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released in 2003. Many of the album's songs were influenced by jazz and, apart from two covers, were co-written by Winehouse. Frank was a critical and commercial success in the UK, and beyond, and was nominated for the UK's Mercury Prize. The song "Stronger Than Me" won her the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Winehouse released her follow-up album, Back to Black, in 2006. The album went on to become a huge international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards, it was nominated for British Album of the Year and Winehouse received the award for British Female Solo Artist. The song "Rehab" won her a second Ivor Novello Award. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won five awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and becoming the first British woman to win five Grammys. These included three of the General Field "Big Four" Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Rehab"), as well as Best Pop Vocal Album.

Winehouse struggled throughout her life with substance abuse, mental illness and addiction. She died, at her Camden Square home in London, of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, at the age of 27. Her brother believed that bulimia was also a factor. After her death, Back to Black briefly became the UK's best-selling album of the 21st century. VH1 ranked Winehouse 26th on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music. Her life and career was dramatized in a 2024 biopic, Back to Black, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. (Wikipedia)

Gilbert "Gil" Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011) was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and '80s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. His own term for himself was "bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues." His music, most notably on Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul.

It was only on May 11 that news of the unreleased second Mick Taylor album was reported on the net. The report said “Mick Taylor Special Unreleased 2nd Album is a one disc title with the ‘unfinished mixes of the unreleased 2nd album tracks. Another tape that I received in trade back in the late 80s/early 1990s.

Generation is unknown.  There's bit of hiss but it's not too bad.

Mr. Bragg is in a chatty mood, offering his opinions on a wide range of topics.  At the start, he says he's got a bad accent and sore throat, "so I won't talk much, I'll dance more."  And the final tally is...25 minutes of this is "talk." 

I was unable to find any coverage telling me what Bragg was up to, but from his comments, it sounds like he was stopping in Finland for a concert, while on his way to play a show in the U.S.S.R.

The Tavastia Club is still open and booking rock acts, too.

This one is a broadcast done as a "Super Biscuit" show, which was longer than the normal one-hour King Biscuit format.  This is sourced from a cassette of the broadcast.

Our pal Dave from over at The New JDP provided the Voodoo Wagon with the following information about the announcer:

   Fred Rocks = KYYS KY-102 FM Kansas City from the little bit I have found he was an afterwork drivetime DJ. There are actually a couple radio IDs posted on youtube from him. Lots of comments on how much they (the people posting) miss the station and the DJ. I found this out about KYYS... On July 1, 1974, one of Kansas City's legendary radio stations signed on; KY-102 (KYYS). The first (and ultimately, last) song played on KY-102 was “Too Many People” by Paul McCartney. In 1979, “KY” became the most successful Album-oriented Rock (AOR) station in Kansas City, hitting #1 in the rating. The radio personalities had a 50th reunion in 2024.
