On December 14 1979 Steve Hillage gave a concert in an old church which had been rebuilt to a concert venue.

Paul Francis - bass
The setlist :
01 New age feeling

08 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - Bring It On Home To Me
09 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - Havin' A Party
10 Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - New Orleans

Unknown generation tape, sounds good, there's a bit of hiss.

I found a copy of the newspaper ad, and a concert review.

The ad confirms the date as November 14, 1979. The ad shows the concert was sponsored by Toronto FM station Q107, so it's likely they were the station that broadcast the concert.

The ad also reveals there were two shows, at 7:00 and 10:00 PM.  The tape I have is only 10 songs long.  I cross-referenced this with a different source posted by our pal Speedy
over at So Many Roads, and his version is the same length...and
cuts off Southside's comment after the song "New Orleans" in almost the same place.  Even if we take into account opening act YIPES! burning up a 1/2 hour to forty minutes, this was either a really short show, or they only broadcast a portion of the full concert.

By the way...Discogs tells me YIPES! put out two LPs back in the day.  Do any of Our Beloved Audience remember these guys?

The interview is fun; they're all clearly having a great time.

Do I have to tell you?  It's flac files of wavs, digitized from one o' my old cassettes I got in trade when we used to send this stuff in padded packages via international mail.

11.  You Just Like Me 'Cos I'm Good in Bed (cover of Skyhooks song)
12.  I Need A Lover (fades out...)

This show was posted on Guitars 101 in July 2020 by "the accountant" in a link to multiple shows entitled "Various Artist - Random Wav Shows."

The Accountant got unedited shows from MauroR and posted them "as is."  He hopes people edit and track the shows.

The files were tagged as My Fathers Place Aug. 23, 1979

Before the encore, the announcer asks the crowd to "give a Four Acres yell" to encourage Cougar to come out for an encore.

The Four Acres Club was in Utica, NY...which is 250 miles north of My Father's Place in Rosyln... I think the show is actually from the Four Acres Club.

A quick search found a show from August 23...and it is the exact same show.  I've retagged this as Four Acres Club Aug. 23, 1979.

This show had two .WAV files. I joined the .WAV files together and tracked the songs.  The left channel and right channel had different volume levels, so I normalized them.

There's a break in the show in the first version of "I Need A Lover" at 28 minutes 33 seconds, and also at 44:44 in "Welcome To Chinatown," so this was likely recorded on a C-60 cassette, with breaks where the tape was flipped, or swapped out as the side ran out.

The encore of "I Need A Lover" is faded out at the one hour mark, so this could be an edited rebroadcast.

This is a very early radio broadcast for Cougar; his first King Biscuit Flower Hour didn't take place until December 1980, sixteen months later.

All in all...a pretty good show.  I'd love to find a longer version with no breaks, but until then, this will do.

....and here's part two of our double-header.  Just like in baseball, it's the same bunch of people doing almost exactly the same thing, in the exact same place, only later.  If you can sit through eight hours of baseball in the hot August sun eating hot dogs and drinking Budweiser, you can make it through another set of the Cowboy Junkies live from the Plant.

Once again, from my master copy recorded off the radio....it's the Cowboy Junkies!

Cowboy Junkies / The Plant, Sausalito, CA Jan. 30, 1994 KFOG-FM

Last year, KFOG-FM changed their call letters, dropped the rock music, and became an all-sports channel just in time for NO SPORTS due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

So...it's time for a DOUBLE-HEADER.

I don't know if they do this in other sports, but baseball has the tradition of occasionally playing TWO games in the same afternoon.  If a thing is worth doing, it's worth over-doing, I always say.

So here's a Cowboy Junkies double-header.  First up, recorded directly from my master copy recorded off KFOG is a 1994 broadcast from the Plant across the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito.  If you've downloaded these shows before, you know the format:  recorded in the famous Plant Studio in Sausalito (in business from 1972 to 2008) in front of a small audience of "Fogheads," and interspersed with short interviews or questions from the disk jockeys.

Excellent sound.  And yes, the guitar lick in "Anniversary Song" is the same lick as in Clarence Carter's "Slip Away."

Alice Cooper - Live From Electric Ladyland - 1991

If you've been paying attention, you'll know that this place is a FREE WHEELING ANARCHY.  Unlike many blogs, there's not a single, guiding vision behind the posts...but there is SilentWay, who SORT OF keeps us in line.

We come, we go...but occasionally the Boss rattles our cages and say, "Hey, dude...are you even ALIVE anymore?  We haven't heard from you in AGES."

So..uh...well, first of all, the dog ate my homework.  Then, the homework that the dog didn't eat...well, I forgot it on the subway, and now it's somewhere in the Bronx.  It's NOT MY FAULT.

Plus...uh...I've had "computer issues."  Windows Media Player is making weird static noises, plus the sound card is "normalizing" recordings I input...did I mention it's NOT MY FAULT?

Anyway...in the meanwhile, I've got a TON of radio CDs that I can digitize, even if I can't rip vinyl until I buy a new computer.

So?  Check this out!  It's Alice Cooper!  He's a ROCK GOD!  This was a syndicated radio broadcast he did as a "Halloween Special" in 1991!  I don't have the cue sheet, but here's a scan of the cd!

Sharp-eyed regulars will note the appearance of our old pal, deejay Pat St. John, pretending he finds Mr. Cooper intimidating!  The rest of us will remember that ALICE PLAYS GOLF, the world's least scariest sport!  Have fun, and Draftervoi is glad to be back on Voodoo Wagon!

In January and February of 1997, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers did a twenty night residency at the Fillmore in San Francisco.  Seeing as how we're at the 20th Anniversary of that historic run of concerts, I figured it's time to digitize my original high bias cassettes from the KFOG broadcast of the Feb. 7th 1997 show.

The 3-cd Crystal Cat bootleg of this show ("The Fillmore 1997, CC516-18) has the complete Feb. 7th show in similar sound quality to my cassette tapes, but uses "bonus cuts" from 1978, 1989, and 1995
to fill up the third CD.The Crystal Cat bootleg edits out all of the KFOG commentary.  For this version, I've chosen to go with an "archival" approach, presenting the entire show as broadcast at the time.  And since KFOG broadcast short segments of the concerts from five other nights leading up to the Feb. 7 broadcast, even if you've got the Crystal Cat boot this will give you something new.  I have four out of the five of those short broadcasts and they're here as "bonus" tracks.

Flac files of wavs.  I've set this up so that if you burn it to CD, the start of each CD is the introduction to the next segment of the show (after the band took a break).  Because this is a huge file, I've broken it into three parts.

Okay,  while SilentWay is busy, I'm going to step up with another "not all that great but of interest to fans" digitization of a multi-generation cassette I got back when I used to trade cassettes through ads in GOLDMINE.  This one is Los Lobos, at an outdoor gig.  This is a bit dull on the treble, but it's a decent tape.

Greg Kihn Band / The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA - July 14, 1984

Greg Kihn Band
The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA
July 14, 1984

If you were to pick a high water mark in Greg Kihn's career, this could be it.  A year earlier he'd had the break-through hit single "Jeopardy."  In the summer of '84 he was touring his follow up album, Kihntagious and did a nationwide live satellite broadcast for the ABC Rock Radio Network over 110 radio stations. While this is credited to "Supergroups Live, a production of D.I.R. Broadcasting," the "Supergroups" shows were usually syndicated on LP records.  There does not appear to be a vinyl version of this, it was only distributed by satellite.

Hosted by Geno Michellini, who at the time was a deejay at KLOS-FM (Los Angeles)...but before that had been at KOME and KMEL in the Bay Area.

This is from an unknown generation cassette than I got in trade, but the sound is decent.

Robert Cray / Grant Park, Chicago, IL -WXRT-FM - July 4, 1988 1st gen tape

.....and here's another one.....only this time I know that it's a first generation tape, right from a master of the broadcast. So... while it's not perfect,  it's close.  If you like Robert Cray, you'll like it.

This is the very first "Taste of Chicago" summer show put on by radio station WXRT at the Petrillo Bandshell in Grant Park.  Robert Cray headlined, and the other bands were Graham Parker, Timbuk 3, and the Insiders.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers / Pinkpop, Netherlands, May 30, 1977 FM

Here’s a short set by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers recorded at the Pinkpop Festival on May 30, 1977. Petty and the band were on their first tour of Europe, opening shows for Nils Lofgren. This is one of Hans de Vente’s tapes that he digitized a few years back. As Hans put his tapes up as one single flac file, I chaptered it into individual songs and spent a couple of hours removing radio static one pop at a time in Audacity. There was a large drop-out in Jaguar and Thunderbird and I blended it back together; you can still hear it but it’s less jarring. Sound quality is Very Good FM. It's a nice, rockin' set, and like a lot of opening acts trying to work their way up to the top, they're "ON" for the entire performance.
