Robyn Hitchcock / Saturday Live, BBC Radio One September 1984

Robyn Hitchcock
Saturday Live
BBC Radio One
September 15, 1984
(or possibly September 1, 1984)

01 Andy Batten-Foster - Intro
02 Robyn Hitchcock - Sometimes I Wish I Was Pretty Girl
03 Robyn Hitchcock - Flavour Of Night
04 Robyn Hitchcock & Andy Batten-Foster - Talk
05 Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
06 Robyn Hitchcock & Andy Batten-Foster - Interview
07 Robyn Hitchcock - Ye Sleeping Knights Of Jesus

Okay, Voodoo Gang!  Are you still hungry for some more Hitchcock?  Well, here's the dessert course.  It's short, but sweet.

This is another tape I got in trade back in the 1980s.  As the recording had to make it from England to California, there are several generations along the way.  There's some hiss, but not too much.

There's a version of this up at Archive.org (https://archive.org/details/robynhitchcock1984-09-01 ) and it's FAR WORSE than my copy.  That one is jam-packed with hiss, you'll find my copy far more delicious.

My cassette had this listed as "Saturday Club." I try to check everything before I post. Misinformation accretes to circulating shows like barnacles to a boat on the way to the ice wall that surrounds the flat Earth. Never forget: just because it's written down doesn't make it true, and if it's on the Internet...check it twice.

"Saturday Club" ran from 1957 to 1969. Both my copy and the Archives copy identify it as Saturday Club, but as that show ended in 1969, that can't be right.  In the notes to the Archives.org version, a comment identifies this as "Saturday Live" and the host is Andy Batten-Foster. Can anyone confirm that this was really Mr. Batten-Foster?

The Archives version dates the show as the 1st, while my cassette says the 15th.  Both days are Saturday.  The Hitchcock Gigography has BBC shows listed on both days, with no set list for the 1st and a set list matching mine on the 15th.

It's possible the show was recorded on the 1st and broadcast on the 15th, but that's a guess, not a fact...so I'm posting this with both dates.

01 Robyn Hitchcock - Robyn talks
02 Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
03 Robyn Hitchcock - The Cars She Used To Drive
04 Robyn Hitchcock - Bass
05 Robyn Hitchcock - Another Bubble
06 Robyn Hitchcock - Unsettled
07 Robyn Hitchcock - I'm Only You
08 Robyn Hitchcock - Tropical Flesh Mandala
09 Robyn Hitchcock - Winchester
10 Robyn Hitchcock - Birdshead
11 Robyn Hitchcock - Flesh Number One (Beatle Dennis)
12 Robyn Hitchcock - Chinese Bones (tape flip at end)
13 Robyn Hitchcock - Balloon Man
14 Robyn Hitchcock - Queen of Eyes
15 Robyn Hitchcock - A Globe of Frogs
16 Robyn Hitchcock - crowd noise 2 minutes
17 Robyn Hitchcock - I Got A Message To You
18 Robyn Hitchcock - Uncorrected Personality Traits
19 Robyn Hitchcock - Listening To The Higsons
20 Robyn Hitchcock - crowd noise two minutes
21 Robyn Hitchcock - The Man With The Lightbulb Head
22 Robyn Hitchcock - Heaven
23 Robyn Hitchcock - Eight Days A Week
24 Robyn Hitchcock - If You Were A Priest

While I had this marked as "FM," there are no announcers or station breaks.  The two long bits of low volume crowd noise would be "dead air" to a radio station and an announcer would have come on to keep the audience from switching channels, so I am 99% sure this was a soundboard

I found a version posted at Archive.org.  Their version had a tape flip at the end of "Chinese Bones"...which matches the tape flip on my copy, so they're from the same original source.
Mine is NOT the same provenance, however.  I got this in trade over thirty years ago.  The Archive version ends after "I Got A Message To You."  My cassette continues for another twenty-three minutes, with six more songs.

Both their version and mine have some hiss and static here and there, but not so much that you won't enjoy this.

This is the main course, there will be a Robyn Hitchcock dessert served later on today.

Comments: Show performed 24 years ago tonight. With the band celebrating its 25th anniversary of the release of its first album "Vivid" thought it would fun to up this anniversary show. Band pulls out a cool version of Zep's "The Ocean" on this night, preceded my "Mannish Boy" by Chicago's own Muddy Waters and followed by Bad Brains "Salin' On." The Chicago gig came just as the band learned "Vivid" had gone platinum. Also tonight 4/7/13 the band played "Cult of Personality" as part of Wrestlemania 29, so nice to see some exposure for the band.

Date confirmed by a newspaper listing.

There's a lot of unreleased songs on this broadcast. Eddie was two years away from getting a contract with Columbia. The only songs from his first album in 1986 are "Cool Walk" and "Jungle Boy," and from his second album you get "Payday."

"Justine" is a cover of the song by the Righteous Brothers.  Known primarily for their lushly produced ballads, the Righteous Brothers rocked out on several less well-known numbers. Springsteen used to cover "Little Latin Lupe Lu."  Given Bruce's obvious influence on Eddie's songwriting and stagecraft, it's not likely to be a coincidence that he dug into the Righteous Brothers back catalog.

This one comes courtesy of our pal, Sam Elliot's Mustache, who just shipped me another box of tapes to digitize. It's going to be a WMMR-FM sort of summer!

Rockpile / Rock Around The World Interview & four live tracks

Rockpile
Rock Around The World radio show
Broadcast date of December 24-30, 1978

01 Dave Edmunds - Interview
02 Rockpile - Down Down Down
03 Rockpile - So It Goes
04 Rockpile - Trouble Boys
05 Dave Edmunds - Interview
06 Rockpile - I Hear You Knocking

Another tape I received in trade.

This one was recorded onto a cassette from the original LP and mailed to me, but there was no documentation as to the year or the venue.  It's from the "Rock Around The World" radio show, and I was able to find some low resolution scans that prove it is Show #229, described as "Eagles/Dave Edmonds (sic), Rockpile/Sly Stone."

At the end of the segment, the announcer mentions that the Sly Stone portion is coming up next, so I'm sure we've got the original source identified correctly.

I suspected the tracks might be from the Bottom Line show. Every so often we reach out across the Vast Gulfs of Cyberspace to our friends on other blogs for aid and assistance.  In this case, I recalled that Stinky, who posts over at Jonder's joint (located at https://jonderblog.blogspot.com/ and tell 'em that Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï sent you) had put up a 5-cd set of Rockpile, and wrote to him for help.  Here's Mr. Stinky's response:

========
Hi Draftervoi:
Nice to meet you. I love your blogs!
Here’s my take on the origin of these takes:
01 Interview - Unknown (Sounds like The BBC)
02 Down Down Down - Live At The Bottom Line, NY (FM) 10/25/78 (Kinda Sure)
03 So It Goes - University Of Maryland, College Park MD (FM) 11/03/78 (100% Sure: Feedback)
04 Trouble Boys - University Of Maryland, College Park MD (FM) 11/03/78 (100% Sure: HEY! In intro)
05 Interview - Unknown
06 Live At The Bottom Line, NY (FM) 10/24/78 (90% Sure Intro)
I can’t find the interviews anywhere in my files.
Hope that helps!
Stinky
=========

Anyway...while this would be better if it was the ENTIRE RECORD, for those of us in the Dave Edmunds Fan Club, it's a great obscurity to finally track down.

The Rolling Stones - Mayflower Let It Bleed Sessions

 *THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Well seeing as how our fans are leaving in droves, after that Pussy Galore post I figure I'd better try something to bring them back. So here's the real Rolling Stones with, as far as I can tell something we've never posted before. I'm sure most of this stuff is on other Stones boots. Some of this like "Midnight Rambler" and "Love In Vain" are not full length. But maybe some of this you've never heard before. See scans

Pussy Galore - Exile On Main St.

*THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER (I THINK?)

*NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

After my debacle yesterday with that Unknown Hinson post. I figured I might as well punish myself (and you as well) with the most truly despicable, unlistenable piece of shit I could find. I suspect this will get maybe 3 downloads. Pussy Galore from Washington D.C. that Discogs calls American garage rock/noise/punk/band, and that's being nice. I'm not going to post the song titles here due to the fact that what you will hear is maybe a snippet of songs from The Stones LP. The rest of this junk sounds like me with a guitar. Hell, I don't even know if there are bass and drums hear. You know, maybe it's time I start to re-think this whole blogging thing except for The Adult Bookstore. SORRY, I SUCK!!!!

This is a transfer off of my metal MX-S 100 cassettes, which have sat in a box since I recorded them back in 1997.  I've never been a big fan of U2, and to be blunt, recording on expensive metal cassettes probably wasn't necessary because I never listened to the show more than once or twice.  The stadium sound is muddy, instruments are poorly defined, and Bono is in poor voice.

That being said... it was an historic concert.  Spin Magazine ranked it as 7th on their list of the 35 Greatest Concerts of the last 35 Years in 2020.

The collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991 led to armed conflict between the multitude of ethnicities, nationalisms, religions, languages, and ideologies.  It may be apocryphal, but Otto von Bismark's comment "If there is ever another war in Europe, it will come out of some damned silly thing in the Balkans" came to mind.

As the conflicts wound down, U2 became the first major act to play a concert in Sarajevo in several years.  The concert was carried world-wide by satellite.  This version is from San Francisco's KFOG-FM, with the starting and ending of the show handled by the local radio personalities, and the Westwood One portions by in-house personality J.J. Jackson.

There are several bootlegs of this show.  Westwood One also syndicated a rebroadcast of an edited version on April 6, 1998, as In Concert #98-15 show, also tracks appeared on December 19, 1998 as In Concert #98-51 (combined with Hammersmith Palais 1982), and just the 1997 tracks again as #00-35 on August 26, 2000.

The Superstar Concert Series produced a 3-cd set as #97-39.  Discogs has this as "released on Sep 23, 1997" which is impossible as that's the date of the concert itself. The cue sheet does not show a broadcast window.  The Hammersmith/Sarajevo compilation was broadcast again as 02-09 on March 2, 2002.

In keeping with my new policy of giving Our Beloved Audience a big pile of junk to wade through (or delete), there's a bunch of press coverage in the artwork file about the concert, and a sad note about the death of West Coast disc jockey Linda McInnes.

On McInnes... one thing to note about radio here is that disk jockeys often moved between the L.A./San Diego and Bay Area radio markets.  Air fare was inexpensive, the flight time is short (about 70 minutes of flight time).  As there were "network" stations in both markets, if they needed a disk jockey to fill a slot they would have one fly in to cover shifts for a week or two.  McInnes was a regular on Bay Area radio...but also in the San Diego and Los Angeles markets.

A great package. The cover is an alternate photo from the Don Hunstien West 4th street photo shoot that produced the official LP cover. Inside is Dylan at CBS studio NY with famed producer John Hammond. The recordings are clear, crisp, and right off of the mix down board. This CD belongs in every  collection. It was re-released in 1999 by an unknown Label, and again in 2001 by OMR.

This is a low generation copy of a WXRT-FM Budweiser Sunday Night Concert rebroadcast of the Sugarcubes live at Cabaret Metro on August 11, 1988. There's some hiss and a bit of radio noise but this sounds pretty good.

One of the first things I do when I tackle an old tape is to check to see if it has been officially issued, or if there's already a circulating copy in better quality.  Why should  I spend an hour digitizing my master cassette Springsteen at Winterland when he's released it on his website?

In this case, I found the blog https://gudmundsdottirbjork.blogspot.com/ which has a lot of Sugarcubes / Bjork downloads available (and which looks to possibly be written or sponsored by Bjork or someone connected to her).

Sure enough, I found the Cabaret Metro show and downloaded it... and... uh... to my ears, I think my cassette sounds slightly better.  Unlike the Springsteen CDs, this is not an official release, it's an off the air tape someone digitized, and it's not a master. So, I went ahead and digitized my version.  This isn't a huge upgrade in quality, so don't expect miracles. In comparing the two versions, my cassette has a bit more dynamic range; the download looks more compressed.  At the very least, my version is chaptered into individual tracks, while the download has the entire show as a single flac file.

And if you like Bjork, check that site out.  There's a LOT of downloads there.

I also found a TON of 1988 American press coverage of the Sugarcubes...46 newspaper clippings, most of them articles about the band, but also concert reviews.  While most coverage was positive ("unsettling but fascinating," "unique," "quirky") several critics were downright appalled by their show at the I-Beam.  The writer for the NME said they "were crap."  The review of the same gig by the Knight-Ridder writer was picked up for distribution nationwide said it was "an excruciating show" played with "monolithic ineptitude."

And...as it turns out, I have an uncirculated audience tape of the I-Beam show those two critics attended.  I've never had the guts to tackle it, as identifying the song titles was beyond my limited ability.  But once again, the Internet managed to provide a set list, so I'm putting that one up, too.  Both of them are in a single download, along with the press clippings.

Here you go! What do you think of their 1988 live tour?  Was this quirky or crap?
