Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rock in Rio 2001

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Cidade do Rock, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
January 20, 2001
FM/TV Source @320

Neil Young & Crazy Horse at the 2001 Rock In Rio music festival in Rio de Janeiro. This concert was recorded and broadcast by DirecTV (DTV) and also simulcast on multiple FM stations worldwide.

Neil Young has had several stints with Crazy Horse as his backup band, beginning in 1969 with the album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. They have broken up and reunited multiple times, but have played in every decade since then. The latest iteration, with Nils Lofgren on guitar, began in 2019, and the band has released 5 albums since then.

Rock In Rio is a recurring music festival based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nine incarnations of the festival have been held in Rio de Janeiro, in 1985, 1991, 2001, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022, with others in Lisbon and Madrid. Rock In Rio is one of the largest music festivals in the world, with over 1.3 million people attending the first event, 700,000 attending the second and fourth, about 1.2 million attending the third (this concert). This is part one of a two part Farm Aid compilation sourced from Farm Aid IV, held on April 7, 1990 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Our friend, Anonymous, requested these two shows a few weeks back, and in a serendipitous coincidence, I had already digitized both shows for a future project.  Since he (or she) asked, I moved it to the top of the pile and got to work on it.

Bonnie Raitt duets with John Hiatt on Thing Called Love, and with Jackson Browne on World In Motion.

Guns N' Roses gave their first performance of Civil War, which was also the last performance of Steve Adler with the band.

Iggy Pop makes his only appearance on a Westwood One live concert show.

Farm Aid IV sold out 45,000 tickets in 90 minutes, featured 70 different artists appearing over a 13 hour event.  The show was broadcast live on the Nashville Network. A two hour highlight show aired on CBS.

The Indianapolis Star newspaper reported, "Guns N’ Roses was flying high as the hottest band in the world — but their abysmal performance at Farm Aid IV lead to the dismissal of drug-addled drummer Steven Adler that night and the eventual dismantling of the band.

The night was anchored by heavy-hitters Garth Brooks, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp and an unscheduled stop by Elton John, who was in town visiting Ryan White at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and left his hospital bedside to join Farm Aid IV. “This one’s for Ryan,” John said before he launched into “Candle in the Wind.” White died the following day of complications from AIDS at the age of 18."

Westwood One repeated the Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, John Cougar Mellencamp, Elton John, and Guns N' Roses tracks on Westwood One Superstar Concert Series #92-21, issued on CD and broadcast on May 23-24, 1992.  Discogs says the announcer incorrectly says the show's from Dallas.

Note that WW1 chose to repeat the "abysmal" Guns N' Roses performance...so was it really as bad as the Indianapolis Star said it was?

On the commercials, we have Martin Mull promoting TGI Fridays in part one, and Al Franken doing uncredited work on a Trident commercials in part two.  Westwood One airs a series of promotions for an upcoming satellite broadcast of the 1990 Knebworth charity concert with short comments from Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Kurt Smith (Tears For Fears).

Our pal Steve Downes is back once again to handle the announcing duties.

Flac files of wavs.  300 dpi scans of the LP disc labels.  I do not have the cue sheets for this set, but included terrible, blurry, low resolution copies that are up on Discogs.  Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says "Howdy" to all of you and hopes you enjoy this digitization.

Yeah.  MellenFest.  You knew it wasn't over, the show must go on!

As I recently posted a Don Henley show, this Farm Aid compilation provides a nice segue from Don Henley through Neil Young and back into Our Favorite Hoosier: John Mellencamp.  I want to point out that Neil's version of All Along The Watchtower is a wondeful performance.

The Mellencamp set is drawn exclusively from Farm Aid '96 at the Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, South Carolina on October 12, 1996.  Four of the songs were repeated on 98-06, and three on 99-36.
Pink Houses is presented in an epic 8 minute long version as the concert finale.  All in all, a good set for this week's latest installment of MellenStock!

You get:  The cue sheet!  Scans of both discs!  A scan of the Westwood One CD sleeve!  And a litttle Excel file documenting what I think I know about Westwood One's Mellencamp history...

14 Westwood One Superstars In Concert #92-45 Outro

A sharp-eyed reader noticed that our Mellenpalooza somehow missed the tracks that had been issued by Westwood One on multi-artist "Farm Aid" shows, so it was back to the drawing board for another revision.

I had already posted the WW1 Superstar Concert #92-45 several years back, and this is the same set of files, but retagged.

This show is the same as Westwood One Superstar Concert 92-19, with the exception of the Arc Angels track, which is dropped on 92-19 and replaced with two Joe Walsh tracks.

Neil Young Time Frame Studio and Live Outtakes @320kbps (BACK FROM THE DEAD)

*NOW BACK FROM THE DEAD
As I post my bargain bin CD's if I get 100-200 people to download them I'm doing pretty good. (Hell if I get one or two comments on anything that's a real bonanza) That recent Jimi Hendrix post I put up has over 400 downloads. So it's apparent to me you would rather have known artists over some obscure thing. I'm not gonna stop posting my bargain bin Cd's (there's still a shitload of em) but until then for every unknown I will post a known. This is in four parts. See Scans

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars In Concert CO90-14

Neil Young
(with Frank Sampedro and Ben Keith on several tracks)
Westwood One Superstars In Concert CO90-14
For broadcast the weekend of 6/30-7/1, 1990
(Same set list as show #90-06)

Attributed to Jones Beach in the credits, but five of the songs are recorded elsewhere.
I cross referenced this with the Jones Beach set list at http://www.sugarmtn.org/,
and I've marked the songs that weren't played at Jones Beach.

All of these tracks are attributed to a variety of European shows on the "Old Gringo" bootleg...but very clearly identified here as being from Jones Beach.  I don't know  if the songs are actually from Jones Beach, or from Europe...does anyone out there know?

These songs are the same tracks as on the second disc of the "Old Gringo" bootleg, but the version of "Ohio" included here has a long spoken introduction that's not on that bootleg.

I've included a scan of the disc label.  Unfortunately, there was no cue sheet included with this one....

What's missing...

Okay...here's what ISN'T in the Neil Young listed below.:
WW1 87-02  (same as 87-14...)
That's available at: http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f145/neil-young-in-conert-prefm-flac-122976.html
CO-90-14 (same as 91-06)...that's available on the Old Gringo bootleg
but I'll be posting a version that I digitized within a few weeks.
CO90-09, a Various Artists compilation with two Neil tracks...I don't have this...but the two tracks are repeated on 95-29, so we're probably good there....
92-19 or 92-45...another Various Artists comp...I have this one and will get it up soon
94-30 another Various Artists comp...I don't have this one
96-04 this one's all Neil, but I've never seen a copy for sale at reasonable price.

So...there you go, eleven WW1 shows, with two more to come and links to another.

Neil Young - WW1 Superstars In Concert 04-15

This show has five songs from the 2002 Farm Aid show and six from the 2003 Farm Aid show. This one is heavy on the overlaps with several other Westwood One Shows. The 2002 songs are repeats from #03-03, and are aired later on #05-09. The 2003 show songs are repeated again on #07-08 and on #08-30. The last three songs (Rocking In The Free World, Home Grown, and Be The Rain) are unique to this show.
