Another from Sam Eliot's Mustache collection; he sent this to me on CD-r for chaptering.  I don't have high resolution scans but I added what I found on Discogs to the artwork file, plus a print ad.

The show has interview segments that are played over the concert song introductions on three songs.  I can either start the song after the interview (missing a lot of the instrumental lead-in to the song), or give up and just give it to you with the interview flowing into the song as one single file. My choice was the latter arrangement.

Okay, gang, here's the story on this one. 

A few years ago, I found a stereo version of "The Lonely Bull."  The stereo is weird, they push all the instruments to one channel, and dump the trumpet into the other, and it lacks the punch of the original mono mix. It just sounds wrong.  I tracked down a mono version and all was right for the world.

But it wasn't the end of it:  A friend of mine is a trumpet player and studying for a degree in music (at the grand old age of 68...hi Gary!).  That led us into discovering that the mono mixes of the Herb Alpert records are often slightly different from the stereo mixes, so of course I had to track them down.  

This led me to discover that a "Dee Jay Sampler" of the mono mixes had been issued in 1969, so I bid on a copy on Ebay, digitized it, cleaned up the clicks and pops, applied some fade ins and outs between tracks, and tightened up the silence between tracks.  Eight seconds before the next song? In the future, we don't have as much patience as in 1969.

This is LOADED with songs that were lurking in the charts when I was a child; all but two of them hit the Billboard Hot #100 ("South of the Border," and "If I Were A Rich Man" didn't chart).  

HIPSTERS TAKE NOTE:  Mr. Alpert played the wild trumpet part on reggae group UB40's "Rat In Mi Kitchen."

Anyway...long story short, these are MONO versions, from a reasonably clean copy of the LP.  I'll probably clean this one and try again in a few years but for right now...this is pretty good. 

Yeah, it's not rock and roll, it's not weird be-boop jazz, it's just pop verging on Muzak, and yeah, my dad would FINALLY approve of something I posted (were he alive), Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says,"Give it a spin."

Seriously, this stuff is fun music.

Bodeans / Tower Records, Chicago Oct. 11, 1993 - promo CD + broadcast version

Okay, you guys...this is just one more example of how the VW goes the EXTRA MILE.  We're giving you NOT ONLY the relatively easy to find BoDeans promo CD of their "Record Release Party at Tower Records," but also the original FM broadcast of the show, with an additional two songs!

The promo CD is extracted from the original promo CD, and the broadcast version from a first generation tape on a Maxell XL-II high bias tape, so it sounds pretty good.  

You can do an A/B comparison of the two sources!  Wow!  You can ponder why the record company left the two songs off the CD when they easily had the room to include them!  

And...of course I found a "Radio Highlights" listing in the Chicago Tribune for October 11, 1993 that confirms the date and venue are correct!

This is a "PROMO ONLY. NOT FOR SALE" CD that was edited down from a WXRT-FM broadcast.  

The original broadcast had two more songs on it, adding "She's A Runaway" and the big hit "Closer To Free."  

The promo CD had a back cover only, there was no front cover or booklet.  I've included 300 dpi scans of the CD disc, and the back cover.

This tape has a few minor glitches, where the stereo collapsed into mono.  All glitches are less than a second and are mainly noticable when listening with headphones.  The errors are in the original broadcast and are not artifacts of the digitization process.

Okay, gang, I figure the rarity of this might make of it interest.  This is a cassette I purchased off Ebay from the estate of someone or other who'd been an executive at Rolling Stones Records (the band Grinderswitch was not a Rolling Stones Records artist).  Anyway...I tossed it in the pile of things I was going to eventually get to, because Southern Rock wasn't something I listened to at that time...anyway, I finally got around to it as the wife is up in Seattle for the grandson's 4th birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is.

This Grinderswitch was a southern rock band, working in a similar style to the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band.  Grinderswitch didn't break out of regional success, unfortunately.  I had never listened to them until I ran across this promo cassette, and they're quite enjoyable.  Solid playing, stinging slide guitar work, and good bluesy vocals.  They also cover an Albert King song, which shows excellent taste.

They put out six albums from 1974-1981, track 'em down...this is good stuff for anyone who likes the southern rock style.

British DJ John Peel used Grinderswitch's "Pickin' The Blues" as a theme song.

Note: The record company labeled this as"Grinder Switch," but the band spelled their name as "Grinderswitch."  There is another band named "Grinder Switch and Garland Jeffries,"
which issued an album in 1970.  The two bands are not related.

Ry Cooder - Promo Vinyl Only Four Song Ep @224kbps
