Morrissey - BBC London 2009

Morrissey - BBC Radio Theatre 2009
Live at the BBC Radio Theatre,
London,
February 11, 2009

FM Source @192

*Accompanying Notes*
Apart from the what-is-by-now-obligatory question (Will the Smiths reform? - no they won’t) whenever Morrissey releases a record, what’s getting tongues wagging is that near-naked picture of Morrissey and band for the inner sleeve of the I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris single. Pity. If the six new songs featured at this BBC show are anything to go by, Morrissey’s new album, Years Of Refusal, will not disappoint the fans. Clearly Morrissey’s word play is very much still intact and, in the between-songs banter, he can still throw some nice barbs, for instance, like the one aimed at the (dying?) record shops. If the show has a fluid feel, that’s probably because the new songs sit so seamlessly among the old that it hardly seemed as if Morrissey’s last album was 2006’s Ringleader of the Tormentors. While initial reviews for the new album have been positive: Q (3 stars), Spin (4 stars), Uncut (4 of 5 stars), Mojo (3 of 5), as with all things Smithy and Morrissey, not everyone is totally convinced, as this Guardian review shows: “At least the sound fits the lyrics, which are so horribly sour you could make cottage cheese by leaving a pint of milk next to the speakers while it’s playing. Morrissey has been petulant and nasty before, but there was usually a mitigating hint of arched eyebrow, or a flash of wit. Here, there’s nothing but vituperative clumsiness: ‘You lied about the lies you told, which is the full extent of what being you is all about’.” Diehard fans will, no doubt, beg to disagree. Thanks to paul_b35_uk for sharing the tracks on the Dime site. Thanks also to itstel for the artwork.

“Erroneously regarded as a synth pop band — and, every now and then — as a band that peaked with a song placed in a scene of [the film] ‘Real Genius’, the Comsat Angels were one of the finest bands of the post-punk/new wave era. Often as moody if less dramatic than Joy Division, their first and best albums — 1980’s ‘Waiting for a Miracle’;, 1981’s ‘Sleep No More’, and 1982’s ‘Fiction’ — featured abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache. The albums were almost unrelentingly sullen, but they were always transfixing. The band then fell prey to various commercial pressures for several years. In the ’90s they resurfaced with a pair of powerful albums that resembled logical extensions of their earliest work, and then they vanished again.”

Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Tokyo, Japan 1976

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan

AKA - Arena Of Gold
March 11, 1976

Excellent Audience Recording @192
(Liberated Bootleg)

pw - fbsvw

*Accompanying Notes
Last March, Tarantura, the Japanese Led Zeppelin label, released a new uncirculated master audience recording of Neil Young’s last show in Japan, 1976. It was an incredibly clear and well recorded show with a nice stereo image.
As was the composition of Young’s shows at the time, the first set was solo Neil Young with acoustic guitar or piano. And he liked to add new songs. For this evening, Young introduced Let It Shine which by the end of the year would appear on the Stills-Young Band’s one and only album, Long May You Run. A close look at the setlist suggests the singer was getting over his failed relationship.
The second set brought on his heavy band, Crazy Horse. It is a delight to hear this period of Young’s career when songs like Cowgirl In The Sand, Like A Hurricane, Drive Back, Southern Man, Cortez The Killer and Cinnamon Girl all benefited from the stress and distress of touring before the rock star business culture set in. You can sense tension, surprise and a certain desperation whereas these days everything is so well thought out.
An interesting thing to note is that tapes of these shows do exist probably in Neil Young’s archives. The first hint was in the production of his triple LP, Decade. It was assembled by Young and planned for release late in 1976 but was delayed at the last minute.
The initial liner notes indicated that one song (a live version of “Don’t Cry No Tears”) was recorded in Japan in 1976. But this song and Pushed It Over The End never made it to the final version of Decade.
Of the song, Young wrote, “Don’t Cry No Tears. Initially titled ‘I Wonder,’ this song was written in 1964. One of my first songs. This is a live recording from Japan with Crazy Horse.”
If he ever releases the first installment of Neil Young’s Archives, hopefully the entire 1976 tour of Japan will follow. Till then, we have this very good audience recording. Thanks to Tarantura for making it happen.

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck - Japan 2009

Eric Clapton & Jeff Beck - Saitama, Japan
Live at the Saitama Super Arena,
February 22, 2009.

Excellent audience recording.(REMASTERED)
@192 (includes covers)

pw - fbsvw

*Not My Notes
On the second night in Saitama, both Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck delivered an assured and entertaining show. These are pros and fans can expect no less. For his set, Jeff Beck added Big Block and Where Were You while omitting Blue Wind. Clapton included crowd pleasers such as Key To The Highway, I Shot The Sheriff and Wonderful Tonight while giving Little Queen Of Spades and Before You Accuse Me a rest. The setlist for the Clapton-Beck portion remained the same as the first night.

This is what an enthusiastic Jii Aoi wrote on the Clapton fansite, whereseric.com: “As if Eric’s presence was a catalyst, Jeff returned to his blues/soul/R&B roots and found out his alter-ego. He bent, bent and then bent the strings, something he wouldn’t do as much on his usual performances; throwing blues licks one after another, blow by blow indeed. ‘Breathtaking’ is the word that is apt to describe his solos tonight. No one will ever forget his bulldozing sonic assault in Brown Bird, the very instant he finished it, Eric called out, ‘Jeff Beck!’ and the loud cheers erupted from the whole crowd that filled the arena. Tonight, Jeff was not so much the smart fusion/crossover guitar virtuoso, as we have recognized him for the last 30 years or so, as a tough blues-gut rocker that he was in the ’60s a la The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group. In turn, Eric replied with an aggressive solo in the next tune, Wee Wee Baby. Oh yeah, together they took us higher!”

These tracks were first shared by Mars_mnt on the internet. However ML13 remastered the tracks and then Hym shared the remastered tracks. This is what ML13 noted: “I wasn’t going to do it but as I listened I noticed that not only was there some distortion but the sound was just a bit muffled.” Thanks to everyone who made the effort.

Bettie Serveert nicked its name from Dutch tennis star Betty Stove's book Betty Serves, but the band's lopsided pop songs have about as much to do with nets and rackets as John McEnroe does with feedback and flannel. Front-woman Carol van Dijk's sugar-sandpaper singing guitarist is backed by Peter Visser guitar cranking out weepy, raw Neil Young-style solos.

Mother Love Bone - Hello Hometown Seattle
March 1, 1990

Killer Soundboard @192

pw - fbsvw

Mother Love Bone was a Seattle based rock band active from 1988 to 1990. Frontman Andrew Wood's personality and compositions helped to catapult the group to the top of the burgeoning late 80's/early 90's Seattle music scene. Mother Love Bone was a pre-Pearl Jam band for Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Tragically, Wood died only days before the release of their debut album Apple thus ending the group's hopes of success. Although Mother Love Bone is to this day remembered by many as a very talented band in its own right, its legacy is ultimately overshadowed by Wood's death and the bands that its former members would later form.

Here's a great live Stones boot from a tour warm-up club gig, recorded at the Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto, August 16th, 2002. Don't let the year of this recording put you off. In a club setting, the Stones are at their best and the intimate confines, excellent sound and largely pre-1975 set list make for a great, raw Stones experience. Jagger's in fine form and the guitars are crisp and classic. Listen for yourself.

It was fusion that killed the power trio.
Jeff Beck formed Beck, Bogert & Appice in 1972 hoping to attain the same level of adulation and rewards that he thought he had missed out to Cream and Led Zeppelin. But on the night of Jan 26, 1974, at the Rainbow Theatre in London, he finally realized as BBA stretched out on what has been titled Rainbow Boogie, how unsatisfying it had all become.
And it didn't help that Tim Bogart couldn't sing a lick, no matter how hard he tried.

Neko Case is an American alternative country singer-songwriter, best known for her solo career and her contributions as a member of the Canadian indie rock group The New Pornographers.

Case recorded and toured for several years as 'Neko Case & Her Boyfriends' before switching to just her name. She primarily performs her own material, but also performs and has recorded cover versions of songs by artists such as Loretta Lynn, Tom Waits, Nick Lowe, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Randy Newman, Queen, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Hank Williams. She frequently infuses humorous narratives into her live sets.

The album "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" was released on March 7, 2006. Recorded over the course of two years as Case worked on the live "The Tigers Have Spoken" and continued to play with The New Pornographers. Critics hailed the record not only for Case's trademark vocals but also her use of stark imagery and non-standard song structures. "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" wound up on many "Best of 2006" lists, such as No.1 on the Amazon.com music editors' picks and no. 2 on NPR's All Songs Considered. The album debuted at no. 52 on the Billboard Top 200 albums list.

Case was honored as the Female Artist of the Year at the Plug Independent Music Awards on February 2, 2006.

The new album "Middle Cyclone" is being released today, March 3rd.
