Numan was in town for an October 18th show at the Dallas Agora.

This is an unusual BBC College Concert, as there's no live music included.  There are short interviews with disk jockey George Gimarc of Dallas's KZEW-FM, interspersed with studio tracks.

Blotto has a website at:  https://blotto.net/index.html

The website has everything you'll need to know about the band, including Blotto merchandise.

The short version of their story is: Blotto was a regionally popular band from the Albany area in New York that mixed humor with a party band sound.  The band issued several independent EPs and an album, and received national exposure when their video for "I Wanna Be A Lifeguard" was aired on MTV. They opened for Blue Oyster Cult on a tour.  In spite of the national exposure, they were never signed to a major label contract.

I found print ads for The Chance Club & Restaurant that show Blotto was booked in January, March, July, September, October, and November in 1982, plus some press coverage.

NOTE:

This is the SAME MUSIC as BBC Rock Hour #341 Version A, and Version B... both of which are in our archives.  The only difference is the announcements.  Yes, three different versions of the same music is beating a dead horse, but I figure you may be trying to collect all of the BBC College Concerts.

I've split the show into two folders so you can file each band separately if you wish.

I don't have the cue sheet, but I've included a terrible, off-center low resolution scan I found on Discogs.  It's truly awful.

The Spandau Ballet tracks are also on BBC Transcription Services CN 04033/S In Concert 282 (with one additional track ("Glow").  The show is split with The Jam).

The A Flock of Seagulls set of six songs were also on BBC Transcription Services CN 4039/S (paired with Classix Nouveaux) with a broadcast date of August 15, 1982.  All six tracks were issued officially as part of the 2023 reissue of A Flock Of Seagulls as a 3-cd set, along with b-sides, single edits, and other BBC sessions (John Peel, Richard Skinner, Kid Jensen, and Janice Long).  Obviously, it's better sound quality than my rip of the vinyl, so go buy it if you like this digitization. This isn't intended to replace the superior official release, but to document as many of the BBC College Concert series as I can find.

Brought to you by the crazy crew at the Collective For Live Music.

There's a review from the Evening Chronicle (Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England · Tuesday, October 28, 1980).

The newspaper reviews the concert from the prior day (October 27th).

I threw in some contemporaneous reviews of their Sound Effects album.

In 2015, a 6 CD boxed set "Fire and Skill" was issued, featuring six concerts, one from each year of the band's history.  The fourth disc included the entire Newcastle 1980-10-28 concert.  It promptly went out of print, with current prices on Discogs asking $185.00 to $400.00.  There was also a vinyl release in 2015 with the full concert, in a limited edition of 1,500 copies.

Of course you should go buy it!  It will sound much better than this digitization, there's lots more songs, and you won't have to listen to Pete Larkin.  On the other hand, if you're collecting all of the BBC College Concert shows, this will fill in a gap in your collection.

Here's a handy checklist for you!  Collect 'em all!

From the ever lovin' Collective For Live Music!

Everything here except Pete Larkin and Richard Skinner was first released with additional tracks on the following BBC transcription LPs and then on officially released CDs.

The Dexy's tracks were released on BBC Transcription Services CN 4076/S BBC In Concert 287, and then officially released in 1993 as BBC Radio One Live in Concert.

The Culture Club tracks are on BBC Transcription Services CN 4147/S BBC In Concert 298, and there's a 2009 official release as BBC In Concert (3rd November 1982).

The only reason to download this is if you want to hear Pete Larkin and Richard Skinner, or are collecting a complete set of the BBC College Concerts.  There may also be a slight variation in the mix from the official releases.

I will note that the official release of the Culture Club tracks puts the show on the 3rd of November  The Evening Standard published a review of the concert on November 3rd, stating the concert was "last night," which puts this show on November 2nd. So research has some value ifyou care about accuracy. Always check facts (and that includes mine, I'm sure that I make a lot of mistakes.  If Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï gets all high and mighty about something, yell out,"Hey, Einstein... tell us about your first marriage!"

An off-the-air master from the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection, brought to you by the Collective of Live Music.

Eventually, we'll track down the vinyl and do a pre-FM rip for you, but for now, give this one a spin!  As it's sourced from a cassette, I can't give you the usual 300 dpi scans...but I added the cues and a disc scan from Discogs.

But because we believe in going the extra mile here at the V-W, I tracked down an ad for the show from the Toronto Star.

BBC college concert B 1-30-83
Note DISCOGS says it's "A" on side two, this is an error.

Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music.
This one is from Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï's copy of the LP.

You get...300 dpi scans of BOTH disc labels! 300 dpi scans of BOTH sides of the cue sheet!  Yes! Front and back!  We spare NO EXPENSE here at the V-W!  Plus, some press blurbs, and a general interest article about the venue.

The concert took place on August 15, 1982. It was recorded for later broadcast, and first broadcast on BBC Radio 1's "In Concert" on October 2, 1982.

Eleven tracks were released by the BBC Transcription services for the 1982 broadcast on In Concert-286 BBC Transcription Services CN 4072/S, with a set list that ran:

Look Sharp
Cancer
Real Man
Friday
Breaking Us In Two
Fools In Love
Chinatown
Target
T.V. Age
It's Different For Girls
Steppin' Out

American radio got ten tracks (all of the above except Fools In Love) released three times, on:

BBC Rock Hour #340 Versions A and B (broadcast week of Oct. 3, 1983)
BBC College Concert #19 (broadcast week of Jan. 1, 1983) {this show}
BBC Rock Hour #445 Versions A and B (broadcast week of Nov. 6, 1983).

The Hammersmith concert is also included on the official Joe Jackson 2CD "At The BBC". That version omits "Friday" (which was on all four of the British and American syndicated radio show versions) but includes the additional track "Tuxedo Junction".  While you'll need the official release, you'll need to add "Friday" to it to build a complete set list.

Set lists for the 1982 Night and Day Tour at jj-archive.net show Jackson was playing a 15 to 20 song set list, usually featuring a Motown Medley.  The Hammersmith Odeon show is shorter than usual. It's unfortunate that given its brevity; A&M didn't put out the entire concert and chose to skip a single track.  Kudos to them for giving us "Tuxedo Junction," though. :)

The CD notes on "At The BBC" attribute the date to "Hammersmith Odeon 2/10/82."  This is the October broadcast date where the show went out over the radio, not the date the show was recorded.
Also note that American and British date conventions mean that Americans read the 2/10/82 on the packaging as "February 10, 1982" when the intent is that it be read as "October 10, 1982." The U.S. date format is month-day-year: the month appears before the day, while UK style is day-month-year.
The ISO date format, YYYY-MM-DD...or just spelling it out with the written name of the month provides clarity when sharing information internationally.

I've included newspapers that document the date of the original concert, and the date of the BBC broadcast.

https://mega.nz/file/jURmQKTY#99OOZNi4VDxaCiiQ9-laZroaGXrBCUb17LWCcWBz4Hs

I love Joe Jackson, and I hope you enjoy this concert.  You'll need to buy the official release to get this in better quality...but you'll need this for the missing track.

BBC (scratched out text) College Concert - 10/31/82 - A
BBC College Concert - 10/31/82 - B

Brought to you by The Collective Of Live Music. Transcribed from the original BBC disc March 2025.

Flac files of wavs, with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and disc labels.  Press coverage that proves the recording date.  I added some press coverage of the band from around the time of the show.

According to Discogs, this show was issued as "Open Your Eyes" back in 1983 in a limited edition of 200 copies with no record label. In 2019, Cleopatra Records issued it on red vinyl in an edition of 300 copies, and in white vinyl (333 copies).

Note the cue sheet attributes "Fortune Teller" to Jagger/Richards.  While the Rolling Stones covered the song, they did not write it, nor were they the first to record it.  The song was written by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym Naomi Neville, and was first recorded by Benny Spellman.

This is the same version as over at TheNewJDP, I did the digitaztion but tossed the ball over to JustDave as we're juggling a lot of authors here.  Which is a good thing.  As I always say, "if a thing is worth doing, it's worth over-doing."

This was originally pressed up as BBC Transcription Services BBC In Concert CN 3831/S with the additional tracks "Read It In Books" and "Reward."

Once again, I present evidence to you that goes against the "facts."  The enclosed article in the Northern Echo says "The Teardrop Explodes" was from an American DC comic."  This gets repeated; indeed, the band members themselves seem to have referenced DC on more than one occasion.  Here's the actual panel (from the Artwork folder)....and that's Spiderman, Daredevil, and Namor, the Submariner...all of which are from Marvel, not DC.

Flac files of wavs, includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheets and disc labels.  Includes press listing to prove the date of the show.

And yeah, they don't mention the date this show was recorded. Here at the Voodoo Wagon Secret Headquarters, we dispatched a team of special investigators to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The first release of this concert was on BBC Transcription Service BBC In Concert 291, which has two additional songs (President Gas, Sleep Comes Down).  The Discogs listing for that bit of rare vinyl gives the date as October 10, 1982. Sounds good, but you know that just reading something on the Internet doesn't make it true.

So, it was over to newpapers.com to find actual proof that confirms that date, and we found it in the Westminster and Pimlico News of October 1, 1982.

There's also a review of the concert. Critic Mary Harron did not enjoy the show.  The Internet tells me Ms. Harron dated Tony Blair and directed American Psycho.

On Track 06, the song is introduced as "Angels" and it's listed with that title on the cue sheet, but the lyrics match the song "Only You and I."  I'm no Psych-Furs expert, but if you've got a Ph.D in post-punk please drop a comment below.  What's the correct title?

And for no apparent reason, Joe Piscopo shows up to handle the introduction AND do his impersonation of Frank Sinatra.

Translating "The run-out grooves say" through Google "Translator"
give us:

I solchi esauriti dicono:
Los surcos agotados dicen:
Die Auslaufrillen sagen:
Les rainures épuisées disent:

BBC College Concert 11-14-82 -A  KPG
BBC College Concert 11-14-82 -B  KPG

When I Google-Translate the Italian back to English, it comes out as "Exhausted ruts say..."' so I suspect I'm ruining international relations by letting a computer do my "translator" work.

You get:  flac files of wavs, a 300 dpi scan of both disc labels and the cue sheet, and the concert listing from the Boston Globe that confirms the date of the concert as October 4, 1982.  Just because the announcer says it, doesn't mean it's true, as we shall learn on m
y next post.  In the on-deck circle, we have....well, you'll have to tune in to this channel next week to find out! :)

Translator were a San Francisco-based band that put out four albums between 1982 and 1986. They fall in the New Wave / alternative/ college rock camp, but they're not part of the skinny-tie power pop brigade.  Many of the lyrics on their first album tended towards a dark, dire tone, as if disaster was waiting just over the horizon.  They also had a bit of a brighter Beatles influence on songs like “Everywhere.”

Of note are covers of Little Richard’s “Dizzy Miss Lizzy,” and John Lennon’s “Remember,” both of which show the Beatles influence.

The song "Different Time" was not issued until 2008, as a studio outtake on Different Time (2008).

Yeah, I did this a month ago but I've been busy with those tapes I mentioned, plus I'm happy to report that the grandson passed his eighth weekly spelling test with a perfect score.

Comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and disc labels.  Flac files of wavs.

This show also appears on BBC In Concert #295, which has one additional song (A Celebration). London Wavelength also repeated these tracks on the BBC Rock Hour #410, with commercials added.

The show has been bootlegged many times, too.

The Undertones just put out a set of 13 singles for Record Store Day 2018, "cut from original analogue tape masters."

This show was also released as BBC In Concert #280, with the same set list in the same track order in July 1982. Often, the BBC "In Concert" shows include one or two extra songs.  The U.S. "London Wavelength" shows were often abridged, with one or two songs left out to fit it into the U.S. one hour format.  In this case, it looks like the BBC transcription disc and the B.B.C. College Concert have the exact same show.

This version was digitized from the syndicated radio LP. Unfortunately, the cue sheet was not included.  I did include a 300 dpi scan of the disc label.
Flac files of .wavs.

As usual, I went through this show and declicked it, one click at a time.  I hope you enjoy it....Third World is a great band!

Marshall Crenshaw / BBC College Concert #17 - My Father's Place, Rosyln, NY 1982

Marshall Crenshaw was riding high on a hit single, "Someday, Someway," that had gone Top 40 at the time he recorded this live show.
Recorded at My Father's Place in Rosyln, New York, the original broadcast was by WLIR-FM.

This show has recently been released as a copyright gap "grey market" European CD. This version is not copied from that release but is digitized directly from the original syndicated radio show LP.

You can buy a My Father's Place t-shirt at:

With Than You" The song is definitely a cover of Elvis Presley's "Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do"         from his 1957 LP "Loving You."

Matrix / Runout (Side 1): BBC COLLEGE CONCERT - 5/1/83-A
Matrix / Runout (Side 2): BBC COLLEGE CONCERT - 5/1/83-B

Updated May 2025.
Flac files of wavs, plus 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and both disc labels.

There's another Lovich/Malibu 1983 show circulating with a slightly different set list.
As Pete Larkin's introduction mentions that this show was "recorded in concert by WLIR-FM" it's possible a WLIR broadcast is the source, and had additional songs.  The other show starts with "Savages," doesn't have "Bird Song", "Too Tender To Touch" or "Special Star," and adds "Home" as the last song.  However...this other show is dated as from March 21, 1983.  The newspaper documentation only shows the show as March 23.

And...of course since there's a community name "Malibu" in California, this has been attributed to a show in Malibu, California.

UB40 / Keele University, U.K. late 1980, BBC College Concert #12

BBC College Concert #12
London Wavelength's Scheduled Broadcast Week of November 28, 1982

Recorded at:
Keele University, England
November 25, 1980

01 Pete Larkin, Richard Skinner - BBC College Concert 12 Intro
02 UB40 - My Way Of Thinking
03 UB40 - Strange Fruit
04 UB40 - The Earth Dies Screaming
05 UB40 - Burden Of Shame
06 UB40 - I Think It's Going To Rain Today
07 Pete Larkin - BBC College Concert 12 Break
08 Pete Larkin - Segment Into
09 UB40 - Tyler
10 UB40 - Food For Thought
11 UB40 - Madam Medusa
12 UB40 - Wildcat
13 UB40 - Signing Off
14 Pete Larkin - BBC College Concert 12 Outro

The groovy runout grooves say:
BBC College Concert - UB-40 - Δ
BBC College Concert - UB-40 - B

When I originally posted this digitization in 2015 I was unable to determine the date of the show. By using Newspapers.com, I confirmed the show took place on November 25, 1980.

I've updated the post with better file tagging, added the groovy runout grooves information, added both discs labels, and newspaper clippings.

In 1981 UB40 played at Keele University several times, and one of the concerts was recorded for later broadcast.

Tracks from the Keele concert first turned up on the BBC program "Rock Goes To College."  Eight songs from the show were broadcast on January 19, 1981 (not the date of the concert).  The eight songs on the RGTC concert are:
King
Strange Fruit
The Earth Dies Screaming
Little By Little
I Think It's Going To Rain Today
Food For Thought
Tyler
Signing Off

The "Rock Goes To College" show is up in streaming audio on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbrs3ulnW_I

Almost two years later, ten songs from the Keele show were assembled for distribution in the U.S.A. on London Wavelength’s "BBC College Concert" show #12, which had a broadcast date of November 28, 1982.  "King" and "Little By Little" were dropped, and "My Way Of Thinking," "Burden Of Shame," "Madam Medusa," and "Wildcat" were added.

In the 1990s, the Keele concert turned up on the bootleg albums "H20" by Beech Marten/Phonocomp (BM 086 (CD, 1992)), and then again as "Paris" by On Stage Records (CD-ON 2307 (CD, 1994)).  Both of these were Italian bootleg labels, and both attributed the show to "Paris Theatre, London UK in 1982."  Both bootlegs had the same 10 songs in the same order as the BBC College Concert show. As both bootlegs have the same incorrect information about the venue and date, it’s likely that the 1994 release just bootlegged the earlier bootleg.

Adding to the confusion on this show is that Keele University sometimes turns up spelled as "Keyl University" (which doesn’t exist) or "Kiel University" (which does exist, but is in Germany).

(note:  London Wavelength also released a UB40 concert on the "The Penthouse/Omni College Concert"  show number #1019.  That show is not the Keele concert, it’s from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1984.)

The groovy runout grooves say:
BBC College Concert 10/17/82 - Δ
BBC College Concert 10/17/82 - B

This version digitized Sept. 2015 from the syndicated radio disc.  300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and a disc label included. Updated Feb. 2025 with both disc labels and confirmation of the concert date from the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

After three albums on Island Records subsidiary label Mango Records, Steel Pulse had signed with Elektra Records and was touring America in support of their album "True Democracy."  While often known for politically themed lyrics, one of the highlights of this set is the sweet, loping groove of the religiously themed "Chant A Psalm."

There's a great online resource packed with information on the band at: http://andybrouwer.co.uk/steelpulse.html
