As Monty Python used to say, "Now it's time for something completely different. We usually present live shows here, but here's a 12" single. Outside of the Bay Area, these guys were virtually unknown. Chrome Dinette was a short-lived Bay Area synth pop band in the early 1980s. This song was a properly produced pop song that sounds like it came from a major label. Mr. Kettner went on to play bass in Beatnik Beatch with Andy Sturmer, who later played in Jellyfish.
This is well crafted synth pop with a great drum mix. In addition to both sides of the single ("Robot Love/Can't Live Without You"), I've included an off-air recording of their demo tape of "Robot Love" from local college FM station, KUSF. The tempo is very different and includes a prominent guitar part not on the official release.
I've put both .flac and .mp3 versions of all three tracks. This is a fresh digitization, and I declicked the file in Audacity.
"Robot Love" is a bit Gary-Numanesque; in the future, we're all sex robot astronauts in orbit, or something like that. "Can't Live Without You," on the other hand, is a lovely pop song.
These guys were good enough that they should have got a contract out of this record, as it was, it was an unfortunate dead end and no more was heard from them.
