Tony Williams was a fan of rock music, and when he left Miles he formed the fusion band Lifetime, a trio with Larry Young and John McLaughlin. After leading other versions of Lifetime (one of them starring Allan Holdsworth), Williams stuck to freelancing for a time, studied composition, and toured with Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. band. By the mid-'80s, he was heading his own all-star hard bop group which featured Wallace Roney as a surrogate Miles Davis and a repertoire dominated by the drummer's originals (including the standard "Sister Cheryl"). After breaking up his longtime quintet in 1995, Williams gigged a bit with a trio, recorded a very interesting set of original music for the Ark 21 label, and seemed to have a limitless future. His premature death makes one grateful that he started his career early and that he was extensively documented. ~

The Tony Williams Lifetime
Turn It Over (Redux)
Bill Laswell Remix
Unreleased remixed studio recordings @ 320

tiburon noted:
In 1999, Bill Laswell decided to re-imagine this seminal jazz fusion album. However, Verve Records refused to release the album once it was completed, claiming it would never sell. However, it was released on CD-R directly to a small music shop in New York City frequented by Bill Laswell himself, the Downtown Music Gallery.

A rare, unreleased version of The Tony Williams Lifetime album, Turn It Over. Expanded, remixed, and remastered by Bill Laswell from the original Polydor master tapes. This unabridged version of the complete album includes four unreleased cuts, and five longer unedited versions from album sessions - which was intended as a double LP but only released as an editied single LP. Cover art by Russell Mills, liner notes by John Szwed. Thanks to Bill Laswell for rescuing, and finally giving a proper mastering to match William’s original intentions, to this most seminal, groundbreaking recording, mixing jazz, rock, prog and metal years ahead of virtually everyone else!

GREAT WHITE - Live at the Ritz (1988)

GREAT WHITE

Live at the Ritz (1988)

Promo only CD

Jack Russell – vocals

Mark Kendall – lead guitar

Michael Lardie – guitar, keyboards

Tony Motana – bass

Audie Desbrow – drums

01 – Gonna Getcha

02 – Money

03 – Since I’ve Been Loving You

04 – Face The Day

05 – All Over Now

06 – Rock Me

Here’s the rare, promo-only CD of GREAT WHITE's awesome live performance at the Ritz in NYC on February 2, 1988: “Live at the Ritz“.

The show, in fact, was arranged by Capitol Records to be captured on video and aired on MTV to promote the band.

The broadcast was a success, then Capitol ordered a limited promo CD pressing for radio stations. Oddly, “Live at the Ritz” never was officially released on CD, LP or cassette. And it’s a shame, as not only is the production & mastering of this CD first rate, but the band sounds fabulous. This is the classic GREAT WHITE line up in their prime, and the versions of ‘Rock Me’, ‘Gonna Getcha’, Led Zeppelin’s ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’, ‘All Over Now’ or ‘Face The Day’ (one of the best Great White cover songs if you ask me) are all served with passion and emotion.

Flac files of wavs, with 300 dpi scans of the disc labels and cue sheet.

I searched for information on the show and couldn't find print ads or concert reviews.  I found a backstage pass on the Country Club's Facebook page.  The pass is marked "Christine McVie T.V. Special Dec 15 1983."

However, I did another Westwood One version of this show that I had decided was from December 16, 1983, based on information I read on the Internet.  I checked again, and that date is on fleetwoodmacnews.com, archive.org fleetwoodmacnews.com, ledge.fleetwoodmac.net, concerts.fandom.com...it's all over the Internet.  December 16th is generally accepted as the date of this show.

There's the hard fact of the backstage pass with a different date, though. I did find a reference on fleetwoodmac-uk.com that shows the date as the 15th. But the Internet disagrees, so I'm listing it as both dates are possible.

The Country Club print ad for December has Foghat on December 14 and Heaven/Odin/Silverail on December 17, so both the 15th and 16th are open with no shows advertised. It is also possible the first night was a rehearsal night, or the show was recorded over two nights.  What's clear from the ad and backstage pass is the show was not promoted as a regular concert. It was an unadvertised show to shoot film for a video release.

Christine McVie never did a full-fledged tour as a solo act, but she did a few shows to promote her 1984 album "Christine McVie."   Assisted by guitarists Todd Sharp and Billy Burnett, George Hawkins on bass, and drummer Steve Ferrone, (all of them also played on her album), along with special guest Mick Fleetwood, the show was filmed.

Mick Fleetwood's Zoo played at the Country Club a few weeks earlier, on Nov 25th. Mick Fleetwood's Zoo had a Westwood One In Concert show 84-07 syndicated one month earlier than McVie's show on 3/30-4/1, 1983.  The Fleetwood show doesn't mention the recording date or venue but it's possible it was also recorded at the Country Club.

McVie's Country Club show was released as The Video Album in 1984 as a laserdisc and VHS tape in the USA and Japan.  There has never been a CD issue of the songs.

The set list of The Video Album is:
Love Will Show Us How (Music Video, not live)
Keeping Secrets
The Challenge
Who's Dreaming This Dream
I'm The One
So Excited
Got A Hold On Me (Music Video, not live)
One In A Million
You Make Loving Fun
Don't Stop
World Turning
Songbird

Westwood One's most complete version of the show is this one, Westwood One In Concert IC 84-09 broadcast on the week of 4/27 - 4/29.  This has all the songs from The Video Album (including live versions of the two studio videos), plus six Fleetwood Mac songs (Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, World Turning, Songbird, Say You Love Me and Over My Head).

Westwood One repeated the show, edited down from 14 to 12 tracks to fit the shorter "Startrack Profile/Pop Concert" format and broadcast it on April 30, 1984 as P84-9 (on cue) and/or PC-84-9 (on disc) This release used “In Concert” disc labels, but they were printed in blue instead of the usual black ink.

PC 84-9
Love Will Show Me Now
Keeping Secrets
The Challenge
Who’s Dreaming This Dream
So Exited
Don’t Stop
Got A Hold On Me
One In A Million
You Make Lovin’ Fun
Songbird
Say You Love Me
Over My Head

The was further edited to nine tracks for its final broadcast by Westwood One, and combined with tracks by Paul Young for airing the week of 12/17 1984
Startrak Profile P84-52 (on cue), PC84-52 (on disc)

PC 84-52
Love Will Show Us How
Keeping Secrets
The Challenge
Don't Stop
Got A Hold On Me
You Make Lovin' Fun
Songbird
Say You Love Me
Over My Head

In digging up the print ad, I also ran across information on the club itself, which was battling attempts by the Reseda Revitalization Corp. to close the club, which they considered "a crime-tarnished blot that must be removed...before Reseda can...halt a cycle of decline."

The back story is owner Chuck Landis turned a former drug store into a Country & Western venue in January 1980 but then turned it over to promoter Jim Rissmiller in late 1980, who booked rock acts. The name changed to "Wolf and Rissmiller's Country Club" and then "Rissmiller's" in late 1982.

At the end of December 1983, Landis gave Rissmiller the heave-ho over $100,000 in unpaid rent.  There were also the complaints about "unruly young people who drink and carouse in the club's rear parking lot and vandalize neighboring shops and homes."

https://mega.nz/file/qFZU0YDB#WsVQ7n60_5PMZjWAetzMmXeSPmgLyGDLtYK_sxVhIvs

Landis tried another company (Primordial Productions) but then personally took over the business in June 1983 and "brought the club back into line by hiring eight security guards and beginning night parking-lot cleanups by his employees" and planned "to schedule more country-western acts and the least possible number of punk rock acts."

The building is still standing,
but now it's a church.

Included 300 dpi scans of disc labels, the cue sheets, five ads for the Old Waldorf, and a review of the show from the Oakland Tribune.

This is a copy of the King Biscuit show.  From what I see on Discogs, the concert was officially released as "8-15-80" in 1998 on CMC International Records with the addition of one track from the Bottom Line, and grey-marketed in 2015 by "BKC" with the addition of "Never Wanna Leave You."  This is most likely sourced from Concert Vault, where the show (with that additional track) is streaming.  It was also bootlegged in Japan in 2008 as "Skyrocketing To Fame."

This version documents the radio show with commercials and Bill Minkin's announcements.  Obviously, you should buy a copy of 8-15-80 if you like it.  It's out of print but you can find copies for about $3.00.  The mix on this version may be different to the official release.  Or it may be the same.

and the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

Another from the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection, and another band I didn't know.  Sam's cassette had the name as "Honor Society" which led nowhere, as there's a ton of "honor societies" that make searches difficult.  I did find that the club where this was recorded, J.C. Dobbs, was holding a week long "10th Anniversary" week featuring multiple bands.

That led to this blurb:

"Five more bands butt heads at Dobbs in Friday night's Marathon.  The one to check out, we hear, is Honour Society, reportedly the hottest band out of Wilmington nowadays."

So it's Honour Society with the British spelling with the "u" in there.  That allowed me to find some press coverage, and a mention that on June 14, 1985, "Tonight, Dobb's  bill of fare includes Honour Society, Separate Checks, King Rhythm, The Models and Suze Cosmo."

Five bands in one night!

Well, that wasn't usual, but it was J.C. Dobbs 10th Anniversary Party which featured 42 bands in one week!

I've included press coverage of the 10th Anniversary Party, and general coverage of Honour Society.  I also left a few of the local ads at the end of the show, just for the heck of it.

CHEAP TRICK - "Yokohama '94"

CHEAP TRICK - "Yokohama '94"

Kanagawa Kenmin Hall, Yokohama, Japan

May 20th, 1994

Excellent Radio Broadcast

*** "Woke Up With A Monster" tour ***

Robin Zander - vocals & guitar

Rick Neilson - lead guitar & backing vocals

Bun E. Carlos - drums

Tom Petersson - bass & backing vocals

Simply a killer performance, definitely one of my all-timer's for Cheap Trick, a stellar set-list with the band sounding at the top of their game. When it comes to this tour this is the only show I reach for over and over when I want to rock out big-time, Cheap Trick give you everything and more!
Recorded on the tour to support "Woke Up With A Monster" released on March 22nd on Warner Bros. Records and produced by Ted Templeman. It was their first and only album for Warners and peaked at US #123 on the Billboard chart. Shortly after the album's release Cheap Trick was dropped from the Warner Brothers label.
After the band's appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman, the band spent a month in Japan before returning to America to begin supporting the album by touring. Before the tour commenced Petersson commented: "We'll do almost every song off the record. We can do all of them. We kind of wing it. We don't practice the songs, really. We'll maybe do them at a soundcheck or something, or get a tape and go, 'Yeah, maybe we should do... "Oh Claire."' Sometimes people suggest things."

Placebo - Glastonbury 1997-98 (?)

Placebo - Glastonbury
Worthy Farm, Pilton, England

Westood One Pre-FM Source @flac

*Original Notes*
I don't know what date this show's from, except that it's not the date it's labelled as ('You Don't Care About Us' wasn't written at the time). I tried looking up info, but there wasn't much either, so we just have to take this tape's word that it's a pre-FM tape for a Westwood One recording. It's very nice audio quality, though, of seven songs from the first two albums.

*My Notes*
Placebo played Glastonbury twice 1997 and 1998. The songs listed here do not match either of the set lists for the dates they played. This may be a compilation of shows from those and other dates and venues. It may not even be a Westwood One show. I've been trying to track down any other info for this show for about about a week now with no luck. I'm done with that so here you go!

In this case, it's another forty year old cassette tape that Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï got in trade back in the days when we ran ads in Goldmine swapping recordings with other collectors around the world!

This one is in pretty good shape, not much hiss, but it is down the road several generations from the master.

I tossed in some press coverage of the real-world Killerman Gold Posse, and also a few items about Al Bowlly, including a September 2, 1941 notice that ""Al" Bowlly, popular English singer and dance orchestra conductor, was killed in a Nazi raid on London early in the summer."

News moved more slowly back then.  Wiki says "On 16 April 1941, Bowlly and Mesene had given a performance at the Rex Cinema in Oxford Street, High Wycombe. Both were offered an overnight stay in town, but Bowlly took the last train home to his flat at 32 Duke Street, Duke's Court, St James, London. He was killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine that detonated outside his flat at 3:10 a.m. His body appeared unmarked. Although the explosion had not disfigured him, it had blown his bedroom door off its hinges, and the impact against his head was fatal. He was buried with other bombing victims in a mass grave at Hanwell Cemetery, Uxbridge Road, Hanwell, where his name is given as Albert Alex Bowlly."

Mr. Bowlly died in the Blitz on April 16, 1941.  The Oakland Tribune in Oakland, California, mentioned his death the next day on the 17th.  However, it didn't appear in the North Adams Transcript in Massachusetts until September 2, 1941.

Flac files of wavs, includes 300 dpi scans of the disc labels, a cue sheet copied from Discogs, and some press coverage.

While the blue disc labels match the Westwood One Concerts & Specials series used the following year in 1983, it is missing "Concerts & Specials" and the series number, which ran PC83-1, PC83-2, PC83-3...  There are no other Westwood One shows up on Discogs from 1982 using this blue label.  It is likely this show represents the first of the Concerts & Specials series.  The show is a bit less than one hour, leaving some room for local ads.

Westwood One revisited the Park West source material on Concerts & Specials PC83-17 (aired May 14, 1983), which was also one hour but added a cover of the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man" to the set list.  A third version of the show was released as Concerts & Specials PC83-39 (air date 10/17/1983) which included "I'm A Man," and adding "Change," "Follow Me," "Just You 'n' Me," "Satisfaction," and "Scrapbook."

The longer version (PC83-39) is still in our archives.  This version is for completists, and to document these radio albums.

Chicago played two shows that night, with proceeds going to the Kath Memorial Scholarship Fund at DePaul University.

This kicks off the local Philadelphia area bands for 2026.  There's more to come.  I've chosen to leave in a run of vintage commercials at the end of the show, plus the disc jockey.  Everything's chaptered so you can drop it if it's of no interest to you.

There must be a dozen or more bands named the Heartbeats.  I couldn't find any information on this particular Heartbeats, other than a few newspaper listings.  Searching for "heartbeats" produces hundreds of hits.

Sam did some research and found that track 12 is on Youtube, "under the name John Kuzma with the Heartbeats. John was a member of the Hooters back in the day as well. He left to form this band. Apparently, they make an album that was never released. Seems John passed away in 2011."

Digitized Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï December 2025

This is an early "Live From Gilley's syndicated radio disc, the sixth in the series.  The cue sheet doesn't list song titles, only the show segments and commercial spots.

There's a single national advertiser: Schlitz Beer.  Once the most popular beer in America, the brand had dropped to fourth place behind Miller, Pabst and Budweiser.  Later in June 1981, a four month long strike by brewery workers wrecked the company's balance sheet and management began selling off assets, with most of the company ending up owned by Stroh's.

There's a big 1950's medley in the middle with too many songs to list.  Mr. Perkins tosses out bits of "Roll Over Beethoven," "Maybelline," "Long Tall Sally," "I'm Walkin'," "The Twist," "Deep In The Heart of Texas, "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," and "Hound Dog." In a couple of spots, audience applause fades into the mix, but sounds like it's dubbed from somewhere else.

There's a verse about the Houston Oilers football team squeezed into "Deep In The Heart of Texas" adding local color, but at this distance in time and space requires some explanation for the younger members of Our Beloved Audience...and for those of you checking in from England, France, and Australia.

"Ain't it great, watching that Snake throw that ball
deep in the heart of Texas,
and we all come back for more, watching number thirty-four run that ball
deep in the heart of Texas
Won't it be fun when the Oilers are number one
deep in the heart of Texas
Now we don't care, Bum Phillips gonna take us there
deep in the heart of Texas."

"Snake" was the nickname of Houston Oilers quarterback Ken Stabler, mainly known for his career with the Oakland Raiders. On the downward slope of an aging athlete, he was traded to the Oilers in 1980.

"Number thirty-four" was running back Earl Campbell.

"Bum Phillips" was Oail Andrew Phillips Jr, the head coach of the Houston Oilers.

As sometimes happens when there's a delay between recording date and broadcasting date, things happen. Some good, some bad.

While the Oilers had a good record of 11 wins and 5 losses, finishing second in the AFC Central Division, Bum Phillips was fired on New Years Eve 1980, three days after losing a playoff game to the Oakland Raiders, just a month before this show was broadcast.

Ken "the Snake" Stabler did not show up at the Oilers training camp in 1981 and announced his retirement through his agent on July 23.

Earl Campbell was awarded the Jim Thorpe Trophy by the Newspaper Enterprise Association as the league's MVP, and named the Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press.

A series of Live From Gilley's CDs was issued in the US and UK on Q Records in 1999.  They don't provide dates in the liner notesbut it's likely that some of this material is on those discs (and in better quality), along with additional tracks.

I was able to track down a series of print ads that prove Mr. Perkins played at Gilley's on September 27, 1980.  That's not definitive proof of the date, but combined with the football references makes it likely the date is correct.

Version "A" is up at Discogs, so we can confidently tell you that "A" is missing the Coors ads!
As is often the case, there was a BBC Transcription Services version of this with additional tracks. BBC In Concert 341 CN 4477/S adds "Tempted" and "Is That Love."

Okay...it just occurred to me to ask a British member of Our Beloved Audience about the "CLUB" aspect mentioned on the ticket above.  Remember when we were discussing the "Two Drink Minimum" required at many American night clubs?  Is this something similar?  I.e., as I read it...you must pay a little bit extra to join the club before you can buy a ticket?

I don't know the conversion rates in 1984 but today this looks like....about 33 cents in US dollars...and that seems ridiculously low as an amount you'd want to bother collecting at the door.  Was this done for some other purpose besides a little extra cash for the venue?
