While we've had a few Bruce Hornsby tracks turn up here at the V-W on various compilations, we haven't had full shows...until today's double-header.
This was a private concert performance by Bruce Hornsby on a Saturday afternoon presented by KFOG-FM. There was no notice of the show in the Yoshi's newspaper ad for that week.
I did find an image of a Bruce Hornsby show pass for this concert, which I've included in the artwork folder.
Rainbow's Cadillac was released on KFOG's Live From The Archives II in 1995.

This was a "Live From The Archives - The Show" rebroadcast and looks like it's been edited down from a longer original broadcast.
I left the ad for our local basketball team in, because I like it.

This is a first generation I copied off my master cassette. By 1997 I was buying TDK MA90 metal cassettes...so this sounds ALMOST as good as a master cassette. Yeah, it's short, but it's good. It sounds like he's singing right in front of you.
Plus, Rosalie Howarth. She was great local radio! ("was" in the sense no one listens to local radio anymore, she's still alive! (as of July 2023).)

Sonia Dada was based in Chicago and got some Bay Area radio airplay on KFOG...but didn't make much of a national impact in the USA. However, "You Don't Treat Me No Good" was a #1 hit in Australia, and #2 in New Zealand, so this might be of some interest to our Antipodean brethren.
Their cover of the Beatles "Rain" is excellent; it was never released on their albums, but did turn up on the promo copies of the "Planes and Satellites" CD-single.

Let's see....not much to say about this one, as I missed his original band American Music Club, even though they were based near to me in San Francisco.
So...I'll point out that when this was originally broadcast in 1997, the Mission Rock Resort was a joint named Kelly's Mission Rock, and was surrounded by a scruffy industrial neighborhood. It was a five minute walk to the San Francisco Hells Angels Club House. Not a bad neighborhood...but not FANCY. In the last few years it has gentrified. A studio apartment can run you $2,700/month.

Another in our ongoing series of KFOG tapes from down in my basement. Digitizeed from my master copy of the broadcast, recorded on high-bias tape. I can't check if it was Maxell or TDK, as the basement is now two blocks away (we moved to a new apartment but kept the storage...) But it was either TDK SA or Maxell XL-IIS, those were my "go to" tapes for live broadcasts.
This digitization was updated May 2021 with better tagging: Album, Year, Comment, Disc Number, Album Artist, and Composer have been added. FLAC files from .wavs.
And yes, I let the "KFOG Outro" go on for the full three minutes of d.j. chatter. I used to cut that stuff off, now I think it's a part of history. Never thought I'd miss John Grappone's voice....but I do.

Ms. Apple was touring in support of her first album, TIDAL, released on July 23, 1996. As is typical with first tours, the entire set list is drawn from that her CD. It's actually the entire album with only the last track "Carrion" left out.
The show is from a rebroadcast of the original KFOG tape on one of their periodic "Live From The Archives - The Show" programs, usually done in support of the release of their annual "Live From The Archives" CD release.
This is digitized directly from my Maxell XL-IIS high-bias cassette, so it sounds great! I preserved a bit of the deejay, faded out at the end....we had a "jumper" on the Bay Bridge. Unusual. No one jumps off the stupid Bay Bridge. Seriously...you have a choice: the Golden Gate, or the Bay Bridge? One is an iconic world renowned architectural landmark, the other is the "Back To Oakland" sign on the Tower of Power LP. Which do you pick for your Grand Finale?
This one is a radio broadcast from 1998 when Train were out
promoting their first album. This is from a master copy of the cassette I
recorded off the air on a high quality high bias tape; I digitized this in 2011
so if you have the version from FBSVIP, this is the same. The sound quality is as close to perfect as
you can get – clear, no hiss, with the instruments properly mixed by the folks
at Fantasy Studios.
One hour and forty minutes of Richard Thompson from a mid 90s radio broadcast. If you don't know him, he's an amazingly fast-picking guitarist with a mordant view of the human condition.
But I need some help in identifying two instrumentals that are tacked on to the end of “Don’t Sit On My Jimmy Shand’s.” I think the first instrumental is Shand’s signature tune, “The Bluebell Polka,” (and I've titled it as such….). But the next instrumental tune? I have not a clue. Can anyone confirm that the first song is indeed “The Bluebell Polka,” and provide a title for the unknown second song?
The sound? It’s excellent. There's a bit more "audience ambience" than is typical of most KFOG shows because the venue was outdoors, but it sounds great.

James McMurtry is a deep-voiced Texan singer-songwriter. He’s literary in his narratives of small-town life; no surprise there as his father is Pulitzer Prize winning author Larry McMurtry. In 1995, James McMurtry was promoting his third album, “Where’d You Hide The Body,” and he did a short set at Yoshi’s in Oakland, California that was broadcast by KFOG-FM. The bulk of this material was pulled from that album. Fans of roots-rock, Americana, and country-rock should check this out; he works a style similar to John Hiatt, Robbie Robertson, and Dave Alvin. If you like them, you are likely to find this of interest. And if you like this, I want to point you in the direction of my favorite song on his first album, “Too Long In The Wasteland,” - unfortunately not included here....and also to his current album, “Childish Things.” McMurty is on tour in the United States from now (RIGHT NOW!
