Note that the Discogs entry shows a "W" instead of "K," for all six sides (example: SS 85•15•W•1 JS KM).

Mixing up "W" for "K" is difficult to imagine, so there must be two pressings.  The only thing that I can think of is the Coca-Cola ad campaign on this show is based on an imaginary radio station.  In the version I'm presenting to you, the station is "KCOKE."  Stations in the United States are (usually) given a "K" designation west of the Mississippi River, and a "W" to the east.   I will venture a GUESS that the "W" pressing has slightly different commercials with the radio station styling itself as "WCOKE."

The Discogs listing also says, "Lloyd Noble Centre, Norman, OK. 27th July 1983."  Other sources list this show as July 7, 1983, and July 21, 1983.   So...which is it?  

Setlist.fm says Journey played the Lloyd Noble Center on July 19, 20, and 21st, 1983.  This is confirmed by a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper of Thursday, July 21, 1983, which published a review of the Tuesday July 19th show.

The review mentions Journey "arranged to hire a full film production crew to record all three nights in Oklahoma... which may be used later for live cuts or possibly a feature-length concert film.  The Norman audio track also is being carefully preserved for possible use as a recorded concert on a syndicated radio show."

The Journey Greatest Hits Live CD had two songs (Send Her My Love, and Still They Ride) recorded at Lloyd Noble Center on July 19, 1983 with Biff Dawes on the credit, confirming that WW1 was the syndicated radio show recording the concerts. 

There is a 2-cd bootleg on Zion (Zion-106) that says "taken from the Superstars In Concert Radio Show LPs" on the back cover, along with "Pre-FM Master."  This has four additional tracks, "Rubicon, "Drum Solo, "Lights," and "Any Way You Want It" that are not on SS85-15.  There was another Westwood One Superstar Concert show in 2000, #00-25 broadcast June 17-18, 2000 that included these four extra songs.

And you thought we were done with Mellencamp?  This is the sixth time Westwood One recycled tracks from the 1997 Farm Aid show, with all songs repeated from earlier broadcasts, 

On July 3, 2004 all of the 90 minute Westwood One shows (Superstar Concert, In Concert, In the Zone, High Voltage)....changed from 2CD 90 minute shows to 1CD 60 minute shows. So the set list is short, just five songs, and the rest of the show has a similarly abbreviated John Fogerty set from the same concert.

The cue sheet lists "Suzie Q" between "Green River" and "Centerfield," but it is not on the CD.
Host Jeff Gonzer retired in 2012, after 43 years in radio...in Los Angeles, Miami, and Boston and on the Westwood One and Dial Global networks.  He was HUGE in the Los Angeles market, on KMET from '76 to '86 in the morning slot.

While Cale never got superstar status it was Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits, who got most commercial success by copying the way J.J. played the guitar.
Eric Clapton covered some Cale songs, but Dire Straits never did.
"Thanks to Eric cutting my songs, it's kept me from having to get a job as a taxi driver."

 J.J.Cale bootlegs are very rare,so I decided to upload this well-known 1975 show from the early days of his career.
The Sausalito show involves many songs from the "Naturally" album,one of my all time favourites.

From Discogs - This recording comes from an FM radio broadcast of Cale's New Year's Eve performance in 1975, at Cain's Ballroom in the town in which he was raised, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Featuring a majestic set of J.J. Cale favorites taken from the albums he had released by this juncture in his career, along with a couple of cuts which at the time had yet to grace a J.J. studio record, all performed in an extended format, radically different from the album versions. This recording illustrates perfectly where J.J. Cale was musically by the end of 1975 and shows the direction in which he was moving for the next phase of his marvelous career.

Sons of Kyuss was the original name of the stoner rock group Kyuss. They released this eponymous recording in 1990 before changing their name to Kyuss that same year. The album was originally released as a limited edition clear vinyl and is extremely rare in its original form. A CD version was officially released in 2000, but is also very rare. Their follow-up album Wretch released the next year featured several new versions of songs from this album, as well as two taken directly from the original, "Deadly Kiss" and "Black Widow". The band continued to release albums until they went on indefinite hiatus in October 1995. This recording is considered to be the debut album by Kyuss.

This was my first Kyuss show ever and they just blew me away. I taped the show from the balcony and got the power from an official power outlet in the venue. Before the encores started an open fuse made it impossible to record the complete show. Couldn`t get someone from the club to replace the fuse. After a short attempt, I decided to enjoy the show instead of going mad to catch the very last song or something. If there`s anybody out there, who taped the show as well and has a complete version: Please send me a pm.
The recording is great. In my ears it`s better than the Essen 95 show, which I uploaded recently. Haven`t listen to the show in years, but when I did a few days ago, I was surprised how good it is.
Unfortunately this is my last master recording of Kyuss. Anyway - seems as if you had fun with my Bielefeld & Essen uploads and you surely will have with this one, too.
This on goes out to teamdz & Hutch, prettything, starmelt99 and everyone who sent me nice pm`s or packages with dvd`s. Thanx a lot.

The first thing to figure out is the recording date.  The 1982 Captured Live shows were recorded in 1982.  Mark Parenteau says the show is from the Peppermint Lounge..but Edmunds might have played there more than once in '82.

We know from the interview segment the recording is from after Edmunds "did New York shows, two nights at the Ritz, and then there was this gig thrown in..."

The Daily News Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1982, says Edmunds was  "playing tonight and Thursday at the Ritz, (119 E. 11th St.)...so the date must be on or after Sept. 10, 1982.
Brucebase gives a date of Sept. 21, 1982...but the reason it's on Brucebase is because Springsteen joins Edmunds.  Another Bruce site lists the songs the Boss is on as:

I do not hear Springsteen on the two songs (From Small Things, Bama Lama Lama Lou...) that are on this Captured Live show.  And I don't hear anyone in the audience yelling Broooce... Broooce...." and come on, you know if he was onstage a NYC audience would be goin' bug-nuts brooce-loony.

One possibility is there were TWO shows, an early show and a late show.  

What else can we determine?  Well, during the intro to the show on track 3, announcer Mark Parenteau says "outside (it was) a damp rainy fall evening in New York City in front of the club on 5th Ave...."

We need to know the New York City weather for September 21, 1982...and I've included a clipping from the Press and Sun Bulletin from Sept 21, 1982 that says, "New York City - Periods of rain tonight."   

This all makes a strong case for a recording date of September 21, but not from the same set where Springsteen guested.

Captured Live! was a series of syndicated concerts produced for the stations of the RKO Radio Network and affiliated radio stations from April 1982 through November 1984.  An announcement in Billboard on December 12, 1981 says the shows were to be “26 one hour specials featuring top rock performers in concert settings. The series begins in March (1982).”

The 1982 shows were only distributed on reel-to-reel tape. In 1983, Captured Live! switched to distributing the shows on vinyl LPs and extended the time from one hour to 90 minutes.
The reels were 10.5 inch reels - 7.5 IPS 2 track stereo. The 10.5 inch reels were used on professional decks, and can’t be played on most home tape decks. Reel to reel shows are rare in general, but the number of collectors who have the equipment to digitize these larger reels is smaller than for the King Biscuit reels (which were 7 inch).  

I’ve only seen a few reels turn up on EBAY over the last twenty years.  There are no listings on Discogs for any Captured Live reel to reel shows. Unlike Westwood One, King Biscuit, and NBC’s The Source, there do not appear to have been any print ads when RKO launched the series.  There were at least two ads for the later shows in 1984.  We know there were 26 shows on reel in 1982, but only a few of them were documented in Billboard’s “Radio Specials” feature…and these often are out of sequence with the “show number” that has appeared on the few Ebay listings.

Recent correspondence with our friend Sam Elliot’s Mustache led to the discovery that he and another collector digitized nine of the 26 known 1982 reel-to-reel Captured Live! Shows. He was kind enough to send me copies to share here. They preserved the entire show, with introductions, breaks, interviews, closing announcements, and commercials.  The only editing needed was to split one of the commercial breaks into two separate commercials, and tag the files.

We have nine shows, spread out from the 5th show in the series to the 26th (probably the last show), allowing me to make some generalizations:

The show introduction is by Dave Cook. He hands off the show to a second announcer, who handles the rest of the show.  For the nine shows we have, the second announcer is either Ken Calvert or Mark Parenteau.  Most of the shows have short interview segments with the band, usually handled by a third announcer "Bruce."  Some have interviews with audience members about the concert.  

The “outro” to the show says it "...was produced on location....some other materiels were recorded in other locations and then incorporated into the broadcast to give you the impression that you were with us, when (artist’s name) was captured live..." My guess is that some of the interviews with the artist or audience were actually recorded at other venues.

There's only three sponsors (Chevrolet, Mattel, and American Express).  The first two use a single commercial across all nine shows. The American Express commercial has four versions, with a famous singer asking you to guess their name by the sound of their voice.

On October 30, 1982, there was an announcement in Billboard Magazine that the show was “being revamped to 90 minute concert presentations from the current one-hour formats. There will be 14 rock concerts recorded live for broadcast on a monthly basis beginning in February with three bonus concerts for summer holiday weekends – Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day.”

The Westwood One Budweiser Concert series ran from 1981 to 1986 and featured a mix of contemporary and vintage R&B acts. The show started as the Budweiser Concert of the Month in 1981, but by 1982 was the Budweiser Concert Hour. While the Westwood One Superstars In Concert and In Concert Shows had multiple national sponsors, Budweiser was the exclusive sponsor.  The Budweiser commercials usually mimic a popular R&B musical style or feature an artist performing the Budweiser jingle in their signature style. In the case of this show, my favorite is Johnny "Guitar" Watson doing an amusing rap.

The original notes to this speculated that the show was recorded "close to Christmas."  The actual date is now confirmed as the Fresno Bee has been added to newspapers.com.  This allowed the Voodoo Wagon Research Team to find printed proof of the actual date.

This was recorded at Betsy Layne High School, in Betsy Layne, Kentucky, the small coal town where Dwight Yoakam was born.  While his parents moved up to Columbus, Ohio, when he was young, they often returned to visit his grandparents.  

As usual, we've got a bit of a mystery to solve as to the date of the show.  
Guitars 101 has an identical setlist and venue attributed to October 13, 1987 "sometimes mislabeled as Prestonburg, KY"  The link is no longer working, so I can't compare it with this Live From Gilley's syndicated show.  Given that the set list matches exactly, it is likely an edited version of the "Live From Gilley's" broadcast.

So..is the October 13, 1987 date correct?

The first thing to note is "Live From Gilley's" was, in the later years, often not recorded at the Gilley's nightclub in Pasadena, Texas. In 1986, performances recorded at venues other than Gilley’s were included, and as it’s ridiculous to say “Live From Gilley’s presents the Judds live in Holland!,” announcer Jim Duncan would call out the show as “Westwood One Presents” instead of “Live From Gilley’s.”

At the same time, they continued to use “Live At Gilley’s” record labels, but began identifying the non-Gilley’s recordings on the cue sheet as “Westwood One Presents.”
This show is a mix of that binomial confusion; the Intro says "Live From Gilley's," the disc labels are "Live From Gilley's," the cue sheet says "Westwood One Presents," and the Outro says "Westwood One Presents."

In 1989, the disc labels were switched to “Westwood One Presents” until the end of the Westwood One Presents show in 1990.

But back to the date of the show....
The venue stage announcer says, "Welcome home to Betsy Layne, Kentucky, Warner Brothers Reprise recording star, Dwight Yoakam" and Live From Gilley's host Jim Duncan repeats that the show was recorded in Betsy Layne several times.

That's pretty solid evidence, but we've been led astray by announcers before.

Wiki says:
"Betsy Layne is a census-designated place (CDP) and coal town in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States....The 2010 census reported the population to be 688."

For such a small town, the local high school had a remarkably modern gymnasium, the D.W. Howard Fieldhouse.  A newspaper article in the Lexingon Herald Leader confirms Dwight Yoakam played a benefit concert at "Betsy Layne high school gymnasium" on March 3, 1987.

Yoakam played a follow up benefit concert at Prestonburg High School on October 13, 1987, also confirmed by the Lexington Herald-Leader.  The two schools are 14.5 miles apart (if you take Rt 23) or 16 if you take KY-1428.  So they're not the same place.  Two benefit concerts for the Betsy Layne High School band took place; one on March 3 in Betsy Layne, and the second on October 13, 1987 in Prestonburg.

Two benefit concerts for the same high school in rural Kentucky explains why there may be confusion as to the venue and date of the show.  As both Guitars 101 and the announcers say this is from Betsy Layne, my research tells me the likely date is the March date, not October.

As for the show... you know how Cheap Trick's "Live At Budokan" elevated the songs from their first two LPs to LPs to iconic status through hot live versions played with a layer of "Beatlemania" screams from a thousand crazed teenage girls?  Well, the same thing happens on this show.

What's unusual is that it doesn't happen in an urban center, like Tokyo...but in a so-called "holler" 120 miles from the nearest large city (Lexington...129 miles to the west...or Knoxville, TN 208 miles to the south....).

You get the usual Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï treatment:  300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and disc labels, and two articles from the Lexington newspaper proving the March and October dates and venues, flac files of wavs right off the syndicated radio disc, with the commercials.

Though Dean Wareham is often compared to Lou Reed, and for good reason, I believe he has more in common with Neil Young. Like Neil, he projects warmth and quirkiness, with none of Reed's forbidding coolness. There are no folk songs here, but there is a slight country twang that gives a distinctive edge to Luna's polished urban sound.

One would have to be remarkably churlish to not like a CD in which the first line after nearly a minute of lullingly lazy guitar/drum playing is "You can never give the finger to the blind." Or how about "Soho's got the boots/Noho's got the crack/New England's got the foliage/but I ain't going back," also from the first song, Slide? Askew lyrics backed by insistent, but laid back and unobtrusive -- well, there is the occasional wa-wa pedal reverb -- arrangements mark nearly every one of these songs. Most involve Wareham's romantic entanglements, which bemuse more than anger him. As violent as he gets is Slash Your Tires, and that's only in his dreams. Goodbye and We're Both Confused, the two fine closing cuts, are more typical, bittersweet and tinged with "if-I'd-only-done-this" regret. And when love works, as in Nasty People and I Want Everything, Wareham understands that it makes one a better person in every way, "all my nasty habits are walking away." Smile and the eager I Can't Wait are the closest Lunapark gets to loud, with fuzzed and reverb sound partially masking the vocals. Probably the weakest cut is the short (2:04) Time, with a slight story and light Nashville lilt to the guitar work.

One more from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection.  He sent me a Bullet Boys cassette he wanted digitized (just posted).  The other side of the tape had a show by the Daves that he hadn't mentioned as they were of low interest to him.

I'd never heard of the band, but I took immediate notice because of their name.  I was in a band named Dave back in 1982.  Hey, I'd been in a band named Gang of Four in 1977 (but not "THE" Gang of Four).  You notice it when someone comes up with the same idea as you (and does it better).  

So of course I digitized it, and I'm glad I did.  

First of all, here's the Wiki biography of lead singer Bekka Eaton:
"Bekka Eaton, the current Director of Theater at Miami University Hamilton in Hamilton, Ohio, got her start as part of the improvisational comedy troupe The Second City in Chicago. She went on to be cast as the Female DJ in Sixteen Candles and a larger role as Delta Burke's sister in the TV movie Day-O. 

She is also the founder of the Greater Cincinnati teen improvisational group Dot. Comedy.
She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her master's degree from Indiana University. Bekka led the Philadelphia area band, The Daves, which released one album on the Pyramid label in 1988. The Daves were composed of Bekka Eaton: vocals and trombone, Mike Mennies: keyboards and vocals, Jim Ericson: guitar and vocals, Jerry Getz bass and vocals (replaced by Garry Lee in 1988), and Ronny Crawford: drums. While they were one of the premier local Philadelphia club bands, they distinguished themselves with their touring schedule which took them from Chicago to South Carolina. Their multi-week-long stints at the Windjammer (Isle of Palms, SC) were legendary for their overflow audiences. Their motto was "Music Is Fun", and some of their stage props were made by noted painter Ron Crawford."

The geography of the United States is large, and there's a whole lotta nothin' in western half of the country...for a rock and roll band, anyway.  Unless you have record company money backing a national tour, you're constrained by distance, gas money, motel bills, etc.  The Daves were based in Philadelphia.  They put out a demo tape and a locally released album on Philadelphia imprint Pyramid Records.  Discogs shows four releases by that label, so they weren't a powerhouse with marketing money.

You can see the touring geography in that Wiki paragraph:  West to Chicago 760 miles; 12 hours of driving, and South Carolina 682 miles, 10 hours.  Oh, and I forgot toll roads, something we don't really have out here in the west (they're just starting 'em, though...)

I love the Daves, they're a good pop-rock band with interesting lyrics, solid musicianship, and Eaton's got a powerful voice.

The Internet mentions that "Love, Sweat, and Passion" was inspired by the comic book Daredevil.  I didn't hear it but I did find this on the The Daves/Bekka Eaton Facebook page:
"Loooove this song! Bekka, I heard the comic book character Daredevil is the inspiration for this one -- is that true?"

Bekka Eaton  "yes. I was a huge fan of comic books and graphic novels. The song is based on the Neil Gaiman’s era."

The tape itself has a few dropouts from the tape aging.  The sound is almost mono, with little stereo separation...but the music comes through.  YouTube has a bunch of the Daves demo tapes posted in great sound. The last song "The Daves - Step Into My Brain, drum solo, Your Heart Is Mine"  (reprise) is posted, in very good stereo sound.

I was able track down the correct titles of all but two songs.  So I left a message four days ago on the Daves FB page.  I was already uploading an earlier version of this file when I was notified I'd received this reply:

"The Daves/Bekka Eaton 
Draftervoi this summer I’m going to try and get stuff in shape to put tunes online somewhere. Those to songs are UHAUL and AND I ROW. Thanks"

So I stopped the upload, tagged the files with the titles I just got from the lead singer, and now you have a properly tagged version.

Anyway...I ran a search on Newspapers.com, and came up with a newspaper ad from the Philadelphia Inquirer that confirms that date of June 4, 1989 ("tonight on NYT Cable TV's Exclusive Pay-Per-View Service") for the "First Live Pay-Per-View Rock 'N' Roll Music Series ever!, plus an article from the Philadelphia Daily News about the upcoming concert.

One more from the Sam Elliot's Mustache Collection.  This one he thinks he got in trade, as it's a Chicago broadcast.  It's likely a first generation, definitely not a master, but the tape is in pretty good shape and the band (as usual) is smokin' hot.  

It's clear from the "Outro" that this was from a rebroadcast of the show as the deejay says it was from "last April."  I've confirmed the handwritten date on the cassette with a newspaper clipping from the Chicago Tribune of April 19, 1985 that mentions the show.

There was one stray track at the end that is NOT from the same show; there was nothing written on the cassette identifying the date, venue, or source.

Retro Rock was produced by the Clayton Webster Corporation.  Billboard magazine Nov. 7, 1981 says “Chicago’s WLS-FM has premiered a new Sunday night show, “Retro Rock,” which showcases previously unaired “classic” concerts.  Featured in the talent lineup are performances by Alice Cooper, Country Joe and Fish, David Bowie, the Allman Bros., and the Monterey Pop Festival.”

Clayton Webster “claims to be the “largest independent syndicator of radio programs in the U.S.  Among its shows are “Retro Rock,” “Rarities” and “Country Calendar.”"

The Internet tells me the Incorporation date was January 5, 1978, and they were "voluntarily dissolved" on August 12, 1992.  Their registered address was 12400 Olive Drive, Suite 200, St. Louis, MO 63141.

I haven't tackled many Retro-Rock shows.  There's a Police and a Tom Petty in our archives, so this will be the third.  The shows tend to be shorter edits of previously broadcast shows (regardless of what the above Billboard blurb says about "unaired").  There are usually other versions already circulating, with more tracks.  

And thus it is with this Joe Cocker set.  The live tracks are from a 1980 concert in New York's Central Park, plus two studio cuts, and one lone 1972 live track.  The Central Park tracks were released in Australia as "Live in New York" and Japan as "Spirit of Live Concert."  While they're still "rare" in that they haven't had a domestic U.S. release (as far as I know...), they're up over at Concert Vault.

The interview portions are short, and not particularly illuminating.

So, this one's for Cocker completists, or for someone who wants to sample the tracks before you track down the import albums (if you're in the USA or Europe).
