Hey!  There's a VERY NICE silver CD bootleg from the 1990s that has this material...but it is NOT AS GOOD as this...they probably sourced it from a low-bias tape.  It's not bad...it's just not as good as this.

Several of these songs may be the same as the six song so-called "Jonathan Goes Funky" demo tape which circulated on several blogs circa 2008: the titles "Someone To Hold Me," "Don't Change For Me," "The Neighbors," "Better," and "Somebody To Hold Me" match up, but there is no "My Name Is Jonathan." 

The rest match up with the tracks that circulate as "The Jonathan Sings Sessions."  

I don't have those for comparision, but discovered that they're out there (or were out there) on the Internet while researching this tape.

THIS version comes from a cassette I was given by one of the lunch waitresses at the Rusty Pelican restaurant in Alameda in 1984-85, who was rehearsing as a background singer with Mr. Richman at the time.  It was a low bias TDK D-90 cassette. I don't have the other circulating versions for a comparision...so this may be WORSE...but it might be better, so I'm tossing it out there.  There's hiss, but it's not overwhelming...and given that I got this over 35 years ago, the number of generations is fairly low. I don't want to discourage you from downloading it, but my "thing" has been master tapes, so I want you to know that this is NOT from a master. 

If any of Our Beloved Audience can shed any light on how this compares with what is already out there, I would sincerely appreciate it.  If it's not as good (or worse) let me know and I'll take it down.

In general, I post shows from master cassettes I recorded from local Bay Area radio stations, plus digitizations from syndicated radio LPs or CDs.  

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I traded tapes with other collectors through the classified ads in Goldmine Magazine.  I also traded with the staff at several local record stores.  As these tapes are multi-generation tapes, I've held off on digitizing them because there's usually someone with a lower generation copy...or the radio station master reels.

Or it gets issued officially:  I have a master cassette of Springsteen Winterland 1978 that is now superceded by the official release.  It's a pity, but these cassettes will probably go to the landfill (there's some chance that hipsters will make cassettes cool again...but I'm not holding my breathe...)
Which bring us to today's SHORT, 3rd generation tape.  I got this from a clerk at Streetlight Records in San Francisco.  The STORY I got from him was that they recorded it just to get the live version of "Ship of Fools/Must Have Been The Roses." The tape is just eight songs; no longer soundboard has turned up in the last 33 years so the story was probably true.

There's another version of this tape up at Guitars 101; that's not sourced from my copy.  I downloaded that version and compared it...and to my ears, my tape is SLIGHTLY better.  A bit less hiss...not enough to make much of a difference...but that version is missing "Ship of Fools/Roses."

And it's a HELL of a version, sung with passion...and hard to believe at this distance in time, but at a time when the Costello audience and the Grateful Dead audiences were still two separate camps.  So...if you like Elvis Costello, or the Dead...you'll probably find this of interest.
