This is off of a 1st generation cassette that I got in trade.  I think it's off of a reel to reel recorded off the air, but I'm not 100% sure of that.  It's not sourced from the download from Guitars 101...although to my ears, they sound about the same. 

If you've got that, you may not need this one.  However, to sweeten the deal and dangle some bait in front of you, I've got newspapers!  Reviews of the show from the Berkeley Gazette and the San Francisco Examiner, plus a print ad for the Old Waldorf!  

The print ad gives me one of those "WTF" moments, as I see that Ian Dury was the opening act for Lou Reed.  Why didn't I go to this show?

Romeo Void went on to release an LP in July of 1981...and hit the Mainstream Rock charts in December of 1981 with "Never Say Never."

The file was picked up a month later in 2011 by Marco On The Bass, who wrote a great piece on the Hoovers. He contacted their keyboard player about the tape. I urge you to read it, it tells you more about the Hoovers than I ever could. That's still up at:

It looks like both of their links are dead, so I figured I'd put the Hoovers back in circulation, along with the two other bands on the bill that night.

Cha Cha Billy was pop-rock, and they played all over the Bay Area for roughly 1979 to 1983.  I had to guess at all of the titles.  The second song in their set has about 15 seconds of low radio noise under the music.

The Lloyds were one of those "shoulda" bands...they shoulda got a contract.  Strong songs, powerful singer....they just had their demo tapes (and some live cuts from the Catalyst and Old Waldorf) released in 2023.

I recommend checking out "Nothing In Return (When The Party's Over)."  That one could have been a hit!

When I originally did the Hoovers set, I had to guess at the date.  With the aid of Newspapers.com, I was able to track down the print ad for the show, which proves the date was Sunday, September 28, 1980.

KSAN switched to a country and western format just a few months later (November 15, 1980).  They had been tightening up their playlist but this tape shows they were taking chances with unknown music right up to the end.

This is NOT the same source that's out there already on Guitars 101....this has a tiny bit of the KSAN deejay at the start....PLUS the cover of Bo Diddley's "I Can Tell" which is missing from the version at Guitars 101 (or at least "was missing from the version I downloaded last year.)  There's no real difference in the sound quality, though...but it's from my 1st gen cassette, not from the existing download.

The name of the club is sometimes given as "the Savoy Tivoli," which had been the name of the club since 1967.  Before that, it was the New Tivoli. The newspaper ads in 1976, however, say the Savoy Nite Club.

At the time of this broadcast, Southside Johnny had released his first LP "I Don't Want To Go Home" five months earlier on June 7, 1976. The fourteen songs performed on the Savoy show include just six tracks from that LP.  

A promotional album "Jukes Live At The Bottom Line" was recorded three weeks earlier on October 16 at the famous New York City club but was not yet released at the time of this show.
So most of what's here....eight tracks... was new to the audience.  Well...new by Southside Johnny, as most are covers of R&B songs.  

Also...on the currently circulating version, the missing track is named as "I Know You Don't Love Me No More."  The correct title is "I Can Tell."  The original was by Bo Diddley.

This source is from the GWH cassette, a TDK SA 90 master copy of the broadcast, and transferred using Audioquest cables.  There is a 3.9 second patch in Roxanne at 6 minute 6 seconds where I repaired his "tape flip" from another source.

The artwork folder includes two copies of the newspaper ad (one from BAM Magazine, the second from the S.F. Chronicle entertainment tab section), the KFRC chart, a backstage pass, a ticket, a poster, an entertainment listing, two newspaper reviews (one by snooty jazz critic Philip Elwood), and a blurb expressing hope that the punk rockers at Zellerbach wouldn't mess up the Aqua Bears swimming club benefit taking place next door.  There's historical context for you...

The Police were on their first U.S. tour in support of their debut LP, Outlandos d'Amour, released in November 1978. While "Roxanne" had failed to chart in the U.K., it hit #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1979.  But the national charts aren't what was happening on the ground, and in the Bay Area, "Roxanne" spent two weeks on AM powerhouse KFRC's charts at #11.  It was at #27 the day before this concert, and note that the newspaper print ad bills them as "THE POLICE singing Roxanne."

So the crowd is noisy, primed for a hot show.  The Police perform "Can't Stand Losing You" twice. I thought they might have been slightly underprepared and ran out of material, but a look at other setlists shows this repetition was standard on this tour...and that they did have additional material.  The next night at the UC Davis Coffee House they added "Dead End Job" to the set.

Tom Petty released his first album on November 9, 1976.

His sophomore release "You're Gonna Get It" didn't turn up until May 2, 1978, a long gap of a year and a half.  In the interim, we had this live tape that was broadcast over San Francisco's KSAN-FM.

Only three of the seven songs on the broadcast came from the first album.  Leading off with "Surrender," a great song that would remain unreleased until the Deluxe Edition of "Damn The Torpedoes" in 2010, Petty launches into a tight, focused set that plays to the band's strengths:  strong original material, the ability to extend a song with a jam that doesn't wander off into aimless noodling, and tasteful classic covers (in this case, the Nat King Cole Trio's "Route 66," by way of the Rolling Stones).

I was early into what was later called "New Wave" and "Punk."  I'd spent '74-'76 trying on a bunch of musical hats that didn't fit. Jazz rock with Herbie Hancock and Jean Luc Ponty. British music hall bands like Sailor.

I bought Patti Smith's 1st LP in late '75, bought the Ramones LP the week it came out in April '76...and that first Petty LP late in '76.

I was an evangelist; I'd show up and try and talk my friends into listening to the Heartbreakers. They were unconvinced. "Punk" put them off. SHORT hair? What the hell was wrong with me?
From 2017 it's hard to remember how badly that first Petty LP flopped; it didn't get airplay. Petty worked that record, he toured relentlessly, played hundreds of gigs...and finally the LP broke in England and the success washed back across the Atlantic Ocean and in '78 "Breakdown" finally cracked the U.S. charts.

In my efforts to win him a few fans, I handed out a lot of copies of this tape.

I went over to my pal Dennis' apartment in late '78 to buy...uh..to buy...uh something, let's leave it at that. Dennis was a mainstream hard rock guy...Boston, Ted Nugent, that sort of thing.
He thought the Ramones were lunk-headed morons and Patti Smith a caterwauling banshee. But Dennis told me he was "totally into this new punk rock thing." He'd bought the first Petty album, now over a year and a half old.

Hey, Petty had a leather jacket, just like the Ramones, so the category wasn't completely without merit. I had finally won a convert.

Petty wasn't a punk, though, he was a classic Rock & Roll musician who'd absorbed 60s rock influences (Beatles, Stones, Byrds) and a bunch of the '50's founding fathers licks (Berry, Diddley, Waters). He was himself, more than anything else; he wasn't jumping on a bandwagon.

I was wrong about a lot of things back then. Eddie & The Hot Rods would not make it big here; Blondie would have to "go disco" before America would listen, the Count Bishops turned out to be a footnote...but I was not wrong about Petty. Damn, I was 100% spot on the money with everything I said about him back then. Tom Petty was the real deal.

Here's a really fabulous "FM" recording of Talking Heads from September 16, 1978. I don't have much information about this recording. Perhaps another Planet Rocker does. Anyone? You will notice that the original uploader notes that this comes from KSAN reels. My guess is, based on the original text file, that this was recorded directly from the reels rather than being an FM broadcast recording, but I'm only guessing. That's why I've marked this as "Pre-FM," even though, I think, that's not technically correct.

Funny story. I'd been living WAY out in rural SW Washington state. How far out? Far enough that I'd been heating and cooking with wood for nearly a decade! So, shortly after moving to Seattle my friend LouAnn asked me if I'd like to go see a movie. "What movie?" I asked. She said "Stop Making Sense." I told her I'd never heard of it. She said it was a concert film by a band called Talking Heads. Yikes! I told her that I really didn't think so as there was "simply no way in hell I'd like a band with a name like that!" (Yes, I was that dim! Some would say I still am…) She said SHE'D pay because she thought I'd really like both the band and the movie. A woman taking ME to a movie? Hell yes I went! Bottom line: I could not believe how great they were! Lou left after one showing. Me? I stayed to watch it again! Took a bus home. I probably would have stayed for a third showing if there would have been one!

Joe Jackson / The Old Waldorf, San Francisco, CA KSAN-FM

This is one of the first shows I digitized from a pal's master cassette of the broadcast.  We'd attended the early show (that's the ticket over there to the right).  The Old Waldorf was above a parking garage down in the Financial District, and we lived six miles cross town out by Ocean Beach. As I recall we drove like maniacs to get back to the apartment to hit the "start" button on the cassette player....

(Come to think of it, the Old Waldorf was a very odd venue.  The space clearly wasn't designed to be a concert venue.  The stage faced across the small side of a rectangular space, with most of the audience off to the left and right. )

By the way...supposedly the EARLY show was also taped by KSAN, but I've never been able to track down a copy....if anyone here has a line on it, let me know....The usual way the Old Waldorf worked was an 8:00 PM show and a 10:00 PM show.  KSAN usually broadcast the late show live...what we didn't know at the time was they often rolled tape on the early show and archived it.

Just before KSAN went "country" they had a series of live broadcasts from local clubs featuring local bands.  This one is right off my master cassette, but unfortunately I didn't write down the date of the show.

This tape features up-and-coming post-punk band Romeo Void, the unsigned Fun Addicts (you can read more about them at:  http://rickclare.homedns.org:8080/times5/funaddicts.html ) and finally, Jack Cassidy's (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) power pop band SVT.

The Romeo Void set is interesting because this is well before their commercial breakout; they do a cover of the Swingin' Medallions "Double Shot Of My Baby's Love."  The Fun Addicts set is solid pop-rock, trading off between  male and female vocalists.   It's unfortunate they didn't get signed and get to release an album.  While they're virtually unknown outside of the Bay Area, they were a good band and I recommend them to fans of the pop-rock style.  The SVT set rocks like hell, and while they're a footnote in Jack Cassidy's illustrious career, they had great songs and again, I recommend them to you.  I saw them live at the Mabuhay Gardens and they rocked like crazy.

Nick Lowe & Rockpile, June 7, 1978 - KSAN-FM

In the spring of ’78, Rockpile barnstormed across America as the opening act of a tour with Elvis Costello and Mink DeVille. They roared into San Francisco’s Winterland ballroom for the last night of the tour, primed and ready to blast out a tight, smokin’ hot half-hour of rock and roll. The band cranks the energy up to the infamous “eleven” right from the get-go, barely breaking the flow to introduce the band.

Collector’s Note: A special orange vinyl 12” promotional single was pressed to promote the tour. It was an unusual “dual label” release, with a red Columbia label for the Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe sides, and a purple Capitol label on the Mink DeVille side.

This version is digitized from a master copy of a KSAN-FM broadcast recorded by my friend GWH. The sound quality is excellent. On a personal note, I was at this show, right down in front about ten feet in front of the stage (and I think GWH was with me….). At the end of the show, the deejay identifies it as being from “Nick Lowe, recorded live at Winterland, June 1978,” so I believe this is from a later re-broadcast of the show.

I’ve listed this as “Nick Lowe & Rockpile” as that was the billing that night. Rockpile was a bit of a contractual mess, with Nick Lowe signed to Columbia and Dave Edmunds signed to Swan Song. As such, they toured with either Nick or Dave’s name featured. Lowe takes the lead vocal on five songs, Dave Edmunds on the remaining three.
