Okay, gang, when it comes to Southern Rock, I'm pig-ignorant. Out here in San Francisco, this was music from Mars to us punk rockers. I was AWARE of Mr. Daniels but not paying any attention. The more fool I, obviously, as this is a lot of fun when I listen to it here in the waning days of 2025.
To start with, these country jokers love Chuck Berry as much as I do, and Our-Father-Who-Art-In Saint-Louie makes not one, but two appearances, with covers of the evergreen "Johnny B. Goode," and wild man Ted Nugent tearing his way through "Carol"...with a HORN section bleating away in the distant background. Ted Nugent and HORNS? Heck yeah!
To my surprise and delight, country chanteuse Crystal Gayle covers B.B. King's "Same Old Story (Same Old Song)." Who knew that a country-pop singer knew jack about the blues, right? Maybe I should have been listening to something besides the Cramps Gravest Hits.
There are other surprise song choices...Dobie Gray...yes, the "Drift Away" Dobie, shows up to cover "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." There's probably an entire essay to be written there about a black singer covering a song written from the point of view of a Confederate by a Canadian.
Elvin Bishop (who has a degree in Physics) shows up to do his country cornpone stage persona, Wet Willie keeps smilin' through the pain and the Allman Brothers are rambling. Sorry, "ramblin'."
Now...some of this music was officially released as "Volunteer Jam VI" on Epic Records back in 1980.
This was a DOUBLE ALBUM with the tracks running:
Winters Brothers Band –Rich Kids
Louisiana's Leroux – New Orleans Ladies
Dobie Gray – The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Crystal Gayle –Same Old Story, Same Old Song
Charlie Daniels Band – Funky Junky
Charlie Daniels Band With Bobby Jones And New Life - Amazing Grace, Will The Circle Be Unbroken
Wet Willie – Keep On Smilin'
Henry Paul Band – So Long
Papa John Creach – Down Home Blues
Ted Nugent – Carol
Rufus Thomas – Do The Funky Chicken
Grinderswitch –Lady Luck
This radio version sourced from the concert drops the gospel tracks with Bobby Jones, throws out Papa John Creach, Rufus Thomas, and Grinderswitch, and doesn't include the Charlie Daniels Band track, "Funky Junky."
What's added are nine more Charlie Daniels Band songs, plus one song each by Mickey Gilley, Elvin Bishop, and the Allman Brothers Band.
During the introduction to LaRue, Steven Henderson of WKDF Nashville says "this whole thing is being broadcast live" so presumably someone recorded the entire show back in the day. While this digitization represents an expansion of the number of tracks over the official release, it's not the last word, there's more to track down.

I've included a review of the concert from The Morning Press (Jan. 24, 1980) mentioning the show was 8 1/2 hours long and "among the performing guests were Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, Dobie Gray, Ted Nugent, Grinders Switch, Chuck Leavell of Sea Level, Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band, Papa John Creach, the Henry Paul Band, Stillwater, the Winters Brothers Band, Crystal Gayle and...on almost into infinity."
The review lets us know the CDB also did "Cumberland Mountain Number Nine," "Reflections," "Dance Gypsy Dance" and "Orange Blossom Special" in addition to the aforementioned "Funky Junky" that's on the official release, plus were joined by Toy Caldwell to perform "Can't You See."
The review also mentions that the FABULOUS Delbert McClinton made a short appearance.
Does anyone out there have a recording of the original 8 1/2 hour broadcast?
On the commercial front, we have ads by Hoyt Axton, Peaches & Herb.
All in all, a fun concert and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
