Chicken Shack - Live BBC 1968

Back From The Dead as requested
Originally posted April 5, 2011 and July 20, 2017

Chicken Shack - Live BBC 1968
(featuring Christine Perfect)
BBC Broadcast @192

*Original Notes*

For many, British blues band Chicken Shack are best remembered for the smouldering I’d Rather Go Blind. The song was popular enough in Malaysia in the late ’60s and early ’70s to be found on a number of pirated 7-inch vinyl singles, which were quite the rage then. However, the name (and vocalist) Christine Perfect wasn’t well known then, until she married John McVie and joined Fleetwood Mac.

Chicken Shack probably had the most success with Perfect in the lineup - she got a Melody Maker award for female vocalist for both 1969 and 1970 respectively - and, on the track, When The Train Comes Home, she gets to showcase her bluesy keyboards skills. The bonus is having blues singer and musician Duster Bennett on harmonica on Mean Old World.

Track List:
01. When The Train Comes Home
02. Love Me or Leave Me
03. Mean Old World (with Duster Bennett)
04. It’s OK With Me Baby

Lineup:
Christine Perfect - keyboards, vocals
Stan Webb - guitar
Andy Sylvester - bass
Dave Bidwell - drums

(Recorded at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, Providence, Rhode Island)

For many years the combination of John Cipollina and Nick Gravenites played together in different incarnations of bands. For a couple of months they used the banner of "Nicksilver". This is a smooth sounding soundboard from a set in Providence R.I. in 83. The combo of Nick and John always seemed to gel and was a great period in John's career.

*Tracks are marked with date of 10-13-83. According to http://www.johncipollina.com/audio.html no recordings were made on that date. This has also been distributed as 9-19-1983. According to the above site 9-25 is most likely the correct date.

Jellyfish Socrates, Pathos, and Plato

 *THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Combining the hooks of The Beatles, Queen, The Beach Boys, and Squeeze with the power pop of Cheap Trick and Badfinger, Jellyfish should have been huge. Co-lead by drummer and lead vocalist Andy Sturmer and keyboardists Roger Manning, this excellent San Francisco group unfortunately never got the attention they deserved during their brief career in the early 90's. When grunge hit Jellyfish's sunny, melodic pop went largely ignored. The band developed a cult following that has grown since their break-up in 94. Don't pass on this. They were truly a fine band that should have gained more acclaim and notoriety. See Scans

Brownie McGhee - Chicago Blues Festival 1995

Back From The Dead...
Original post by Mitch, August 5, 2010

Brownie McGhee
Chicago Blues Festival
Grant Park, IL.
June 4, 1995
Soundboard or FM Source @192

Brownie McGhee's death in 1996 was an enormous loss in the blues field. Although he had been semi-retired and suffering from stomach cancer, the guitarist was still the leading Piedmont-style bluesman on the planet, venerated worldwide for his prolific activities both on his own and with his longtime partner, blind harpist Sonny Terry. Together, McGhee and Terry worked for decades in an acoustic folk-blues bag.

 *THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

I know, I know I owe you a couple more Beatles post, but stay tuned they're coming up. This post was gonna be about how I hate blogs that promote their own shitty music, think their clever and/or funny, or rip off other blogs and don't give any thanks. Jeez then I thought about it for a couple minutes and I'm as guilty of everything that I was going to rail about as the next person. Then I came to another conclusion, I will no longer be a Blog hater. No as a matter of fact I'm grateful for the Blog's that do exist. It's almost a dying breed. I'm under the impression that the only ones who pay any attention to the Blog's anymore are true music lovers. So to all my Blog brothers bless you for all you do and all the hard work you put into them. As a matter of fact I'm kicking around the idea (and if I can get the financial backing) I'm gonna stage the first Jobe's Peace and Love Festival. I'm trying to contact the estates of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, John Prine, David Bowie, Tom Petty, Prince.(The Elvis estate has already said no) Then those that are still with us, like these guys, The Stones and many many others if they would like to participate. So hang loose and stay tuned for more info. See scans.

Santana / Hammersmith '76 - Westwood One Superstars In Concert #97-04

Santana
Westwood One Superstars In Concert #97-04
for broadcast the week of January 20, 1997

originally recorded by the BBC

Hammersmith Odeon
London, England
December 15, 1976

01 Westwood One Superstars In Concert 97-04 Intro - J.J. Jackson
02 Carnaval Let The Children Play Jugando
03 Black Magic Woman-Gypsy Queen
04 Dance Sister Dance (Baila Mi Hermana)
05 María Caracóles
06 Oye Como Va
07 Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)
08 Samba Pa Ti
09 Incident At Neshubar
10 Evil Ways
11 Soul Sacrifice
12 Westwood One Superstars In Concert 97-04 Outro - J.J. Jackson

Westwood One's host J.J. Jackson announces the show as originally recorded in 1977 at the Hammersmith Odeon by the BBC.  I can't find any evidence that Santana played Hammersmith in '77.  He DID play there on December 15, 1976. The BBC Rock Hour distributed a reel-to-reel tape of the show for broadcast in the USA with an air date of February 2, 1977, so that may be the source of the error.

Setlist.com says "Revelations" was played after Dance Sister, and has the songs in a different order.

This is extracted using EAC from the broadcast discs, not recorded off the air.

Along with the great music, you get 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, affidavit, and CD discs.

Let's see...what else?

Oh, yeah....Westwood One used this BBC show as source material several times over the years.  The last Santana I posted...Westwood One In Concert #93-16 was a compilation from three different concerts and has the same takes of Oye Como Va and Europa on it as this show.

Greg Lake with Gary Moore - London 1981

 Greg Lake with Gary Moore
Hammersmith Odeon
London, England
November 5, 1981

KBFH soundboard @320

{out of print}

Starting off with “Fanfare For The Common Man” in the same rock arrangement ELP played in 1977.  Gary Moore’s guitar takes the place of Emerson’s keyboards in the first half of the show, but Tommy Eyre does assert himself during the improvisation in the middle.  He solos on the keyboards and duets with Moore’s guitar.  The Copeland cover segues into a heavy metal arrangement of “Karn Evil 9.”

The bulk of the show is drawn from Greg Lake including the Moore written “Nuclear Attack,” “The Lie” and “Retribution Drive.”  Thin Lizzy is represented with Moore’s “Parisienne Walkways” and they play a cover of the 1962 hit “You Really Got A Hold Of Me” by The Miracles.

A highlight of the set is “Love You Too Much” from Greg Lake.  This is the song which Lake co-wrote with Bob Dylan.  The lyrics are closer to Lake circa Love Beach and really not too much like Dylan, but it is a fun song none the less.  Moore especially has fun with the solos in the middle.

“21 Century Schizoid Man” has a spacy introduction and Moore doesn’t try to duplicate Fripp’s angular guitar solo, but rather plays his own brand of heavy riffing power chords.  The show ends with a version of “The Court Of The Crimson King” in which Moore plays the mellotron melody on the guitar.  It is interesting how Lake, wanting to establish a solo career, would end the song with two ancient King Crimson songs.

Set List:
1."Fanfare for the Common Man – Karn Evil 9"
2."Nuclear Attack"
3."The Lie"
4."Retribution Drive"
5."Lucky Man"
6."Parisienne Walkways"
7."You've Really Got a Hold on Me"
8."Love You Too Much"
9."21st Century Schizoid Man"
10."The Court of the Crimson King"

Greg Lake – lead vocals, guitar
Gary Moore – lead guitar, vocals
Tommy Eyre – keyboards, vocals
Ted McKenna – drums, percussion
Tristram Margetts – bass
