Violent Femmes - Melbourne 1990

Violent Femmes - Live at The Palace
Melbourne, Australia,
November 8, 1990

FM Source @192

*Enclosed Notes*
Championed by Britain’s New Musical Express during the cowpunk days, the Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano is blessed with a distinctive voice and writes Christian songs with a strange and perculiar slant. While Jesus Walking On The Water might fit your Sunday school, Country Death Song and Hallowed Ground would probably leave your Sunday congregation shaking their heads.

The Femmes, who hailed from Milwaukee, had three solid albums at the start of their career - the self-titled Violent Femmes (1982); Hallowed Ground (1984) and The Blind Leading The Naked (1986). While tracks from the first two albums continue to form the bedrock of the Violent Femmes canon, The Blind Leading The Naked had the then-timely Old Mother Reagan and the hit song, a cover of Marc Bolan’s Children Of The Revolution.

Yet, the Femmes were always under the radar, despite strong albums and guest musicians such as Jerry (Talking Heads) Harrison, guitarists Fred Frith and Leo Kottke and avant-garde saxophonist John Zorn. While Children Of The Revolution is missing from the Melbourne setlist, but when they get into a groove, as on No Killing, they do have a strong propulsive power.

The Femmes’ debut album was voted at No. 59 in BigO’s Top 100 Albums (1975-1995): “As nasal as rock vocals can get, Gano whines and laments on 10 tracks that drip with adolescent neurosis and hormonal surges. Where punk greats Iggy Pop and Jonathan Richman first assauge us with their point-blank treatise on teen hang-ups, Gano continues hallowed tradition in a voice that lays bare the hurt and the desire.”

Earl Greyhound is a three-piece blues-rock band from Brooklyn consisting of Matt Whyte (singer/guitarist), Kamara Thomas (bassist/singer) and Ricc Sheridan (drums). They are currently signed to Some Records. Their music is heavily influenced by bands from the 70's, and the singer's and bassist's voices often intertwine in songs. The male/female voice contrasts are a large part of the band's sound.

Camera Obscura - Radio Sessions
WYEP Session June 30, 2009 @128
KCRW Session June 12, 2009 @320
FM Source

There’s something very personal about Camera Obscura. Tracyanne Campbell’s heart-on-sleeve lyrics and breakable vocals; the cozy arrangements and production betraying a deep fondness for earnest ’60s pop—no accident that their best song references an old English popster and admits, “I’m ready to be heartbroken.” They’re the kind of band you feel protective of, and that type of intimacy and need leads to a very close sense of emotional communion. What’s weird about the Glasgow group is that they seem to not only know the kind of relationship they have with their fans, but seem to be in command of the relationship.

Tinsley Ellis & The Heartfixers - Live at the Moonshadow

Tinsley Ellis & The Heartfixers - Live at the Moonshadow
Soundboard @224
Waaay out of print

In 1981, Tinsley Ellis co-founded the Heartfixers with singer/harmonica player Chicago Bob Nelson, and they recorded an eponymous debut album for the tiny Southland imprint. They soon signed with the slightly larger Landslide and issued Live at the Moon Shadow in 1983, by which point they were one of the most popular live blues acts in the South. However, Nelson left the group shortly after the album's release, and Ellis took over lead vocal chores.

I've probably seen Tinsley at least 10 times over the last 15 years living in Florida. Tinsley being a native of Atlanta spent most of his childhood in southern Florida before moving back to Atlanta in 1975. He spends a lot of time touring the south as he is adord by the folks who live here. He's been one of the kickass acts of many a Springing The Blues Festival
and NEVER fails to rip my face off every time I've seen him perform. Tinsley is an amazing guitarist and even better human being. Dedicated to playing an being an ambassador for the blues, I'm sure he'll go to his deathbed with a guitar in his hands.

Aerosmith - Stroll On: London (w/Jimmy Page) and Kansas City Rehearsals 1990

Warning: the Kansas City sessions (7-15) are reason enough to learn why Joe Perry is so wicked with a semi-acoustic. The man also sold his soul for those chops with a slide--his testimony here is the law. It's also great to hear Steven Tyler orchestrating things with that great sense of syncopation and percussive background he possesses. And the Jimmy Page tunes are...first? Fantastic!

Jim Morrison - HWY: An American Pastoral

HWY: An American Pastoral by Jim Morrison

Like the man himself, HWY: An American Pastoral is complex and mysterious. He hits the road like Kerouac, wandering, searching for meaning.
Morrison's Mustang Cobra cruises the highways of a forgotten America, the unknown lurking behind every rock edifice and cactus that dots his journey. He's almost like Caine in Kung-Fu, except the Asian landscape is now America. Jim Morrison is on the spiritual warpath.
To see the mind of the poet at work without his bandmates is a rare gift. Jim and The Doors are/were inseperable, but this little magna carta on freedom shows us his solitary genius and glorious madness.
The soundtrack is eerie, unsettling, not quite right. But considering the artist at the heart of the film, I'm not surprised. HWY is very special. Every frame reminds the viewer that there was a man in the late 60's of immense power who dared to search for the unknown, who attempted to shake up America with words and images. He tried to tempt the gods as it were, like Loki, a man on a mission.
An American Pastoral is proof.
Morrison financed the venture and formed his own production company in order to maintain complete control of the project. Paul Ferrara, Frank Lisciandro and Babe Hill assisted with the project.

Morrison played the main character, a hitchhiker turned killer/car thief. Morrison asked his friend, composer/pianist Fred Myrow, to select the soundtrack for the film.

Buddy Guy - Legends, Chicago, Jan. 24, 2008

I've seen Buddy do some strange things--like use a wireless amp to allow him to walk off the stage and out the theater door...still playing with the band onstage, then return...and I've seen him seduce an audience too. Yeah, Buddy just took every woman away from the guy who took her to the show.

He was a wolf--nothing less than going after the flock that was available. I wrote that "The man is after your dinner, and you ain't getting close to the dessert menu, Junior. The platter has been licked clean--I'm not talking about your fine china, son--and you didn't have a bite"
and more in Rock 'n Blues Stew at

Mick Taylor - Osaka, Japan 2009

Mick Taylor - Live at B Osaka
Osaka, Japan
April 18, 2009

Very Good Audience Recording @192

This is for those who felt Mick Taylor and The Rolling Stones should have just stayed playing those low-down gritty blues.

Thanks to mickeyjaggar who shared these tracks on the Dime site and for the artwork.
Thanks also to tapers Tom & Jerry and to sound editors, the Naniwa Hot Brothers.
From Mickey and Tapers’ notes:
“Recorded from the real privilege section of the venue.
Despite the poor acoustics in the house, it turns out to be one of the best recordings this year. Mick and his band are in top form. Mick’s vocal is strong and convincing. His silky smooth blues guitar still blew me away. Just take a listen to You Shook Me, Alabama and You Gotta Move!”

Track List:

Track 02. Secret Affair (15.8MB)
Track 03. Twisted Sister (13.1MB)

The Rolling Stones - Louisville KY. 9-29-2006 @ 224 Kbps

Over at our other place are the first 2 parts of this show. So you have to do a little work to piece them together. What if one day Keith said "Mick I'm tired of playing the same old songs, the same old set list, what if we try something else from our vast catalogue?" "Oh yeah Keith like what?" "Well you know we've never done stuff like Stupid Girl, Child Of The Moon, Soul Survivor, 19th Nervous Breakdown, and the whole lot which I'm sure you've forgotten the words to." "Oh yeah, well I'll threaten to leave the band then. Why screw around with the cash cow?" "Oh Mick, the last time you wanted to leave I put out my first solo record which blew your entire career away." Well it could happen you know. See scans for details
