Taper Notes:
This performance was on a Thursday night, the day before Halloween. Jason and band didn't have many people in the seats. You'll hear him say the three of you. I was at one table. A couple of happy dancing girls were at another table, and VERY happy to see Shawn. But it was a barren night for JRNB this night. The economy is down, the restaurant and entertainment business is slow. But road warriors like these guys are still bringin' it, even if there are just few of us in the chairs. Don't worry guys it will turn around for all of us. Hang in there.

They got a bit off the totally smoking hard charging sets that I've heard before, so you'll hear some softer stuff and some great dynamics. Gotta say I love the new drummer who keeps great time, plays a great shuffle, can make the cymbals ring and keep great dynamics in the lighter passages. Don't get me wrong, they really smoke at times, they just didn't kick the afterburners for a three hour set this night. It was still GREAT, just for other reasons.

I was worried about Buckweed's bass overdriving the recording, but my old settings held out really well and I'm pleased with the dynamics. Love his playing and speed. Rock solid for sure.

The new addition on "southern tours" on congas adds depth and augmentation of the rhythm section and his vocals are really cool, adding a jazz/jam band vibe.

The set presented here is the completed set. They played a full set followed by a break. The owner said just two more songs and they were shutting down for the night and heading home. The band did three songs. And on one of the last songs, Shawn's stomp box board began to fail, so there are some weird vibes in between his guitar and the amp that the recording captures. He unplugs and goes straight into the black Super Reverb, so you may hear a slightly different tone after that. I kept the tape running to catch Shawn playing back in through the pedal board where it seems it was back working again. It must have been the Halloween Spirits visiting a day early.

Enjoy this one. I think it catches the band having a good time on a slow night, but playing with great heart and skill. There weren't many there, but we certainly enjoyed it.

I'll quote Chuck Berry, from a rock and roll "revival" show in the late mid 70's where he played with a slew of vintage GREATS and only three rows of people showed up."Never have so few seen so much for so little". It was true that night and this one as well.

And to Jason, thanks for taking the time to talk. Hope the new, er old, mic makes it to the new CD. I'll be in touch. It is the morning of election day and I'm hopeful like I've not been in decades.

Gary Warren

HP Lovecraft - Two Classic Albums From... {Out of Print}

Sherman, set the wayback machine to 1967. We'll do some acid, it will be psychedelic!

HP Lovecraft - I & II
Studio Recordings @192
Out of Print

Featuring two strong singers (who often sang dual leads), hauntingly hazy arrangements, and imaginative songwriting that drew from pop and folk influences, H.P. Lovecraft was one of the better psychedelic groups of the late '60s. The band was formed by ex-folky George Edwards in Chicago in 1967. Edwards and keyboardist Dave Michaels, a classically trained singer with a four-octave range, handled the vocals, which echoed Jefferson Airplane's in their depth and blend of high and low parts. Their self-titled 1967 LP was an impressive debut, featuring strong originals and covers of early compositions by Randy Newman and Fred Neil, as well as one of the first underground FM radio favorites, "White Ship." The band moved to California the following year; their second and last album, H.P. Lovecraft II, was a much more sprawling and unfocused work, despite some strong moments. A spin-off group, Lovecraft, released a couple LPs in the '70s that bore little relation to the first incarnation of the band.

DFX2 - BBC Rock Hour #441, Keystone Palo Alto, 1983

Okay, gang....for this one I have to talk you into trying something new.  Something you've probably not heard before.

Really....you've got 1,000 bootlegs by Clapton, Springsteen...but when did you last listen to DFX2?  Probably never....

DFX2 was a San Diego based band working from 1979 until they broke up in 1989.  DFX2 were named after identical twin brothers Douglas and David Farange.  Their name was derived from their identical initials “D.F.” multiplied by two: “D.F. x 2”   While their name sounds really "synthy" they don't use synthesizers...they're a rock and roll band.

They were described as New Wave, or even punk at the time, but in 2013 their sound come off as more more reminiscent of the mid-70s Rolling Stones...at least on the background sound of the band.  The vocalist doesn't sound like Mick....he's more Iggy Pop/Lou Reed influenced.

While they signed to a major label (MCA), it didn't result in a full album coming out.  They got airplay on MTV with the songs “Emotion” and “Maureen.“  “Emotion” was anthologized on Rhino Records “New Wave Hits Of The ‘80s, Volume 11.”  But other than that one song, there was almost nothing available during the CD era.  However, in 2010, a collection called EMOTION: DFX2 ANTHOLOGY gathered together most (but not all) of their previously released material, and added numerous unreleased tracks.  It’s in print and available at Amazon as both a CD and MP3 downloads.

This live set is from a BBC Rock Hour show recorded at the Keystone in Palo Alto, California.  Four of the songs are unique to this live show and are not on the vinyl EPs or the CD anthology: two originals “Cloud #9” and “Not The Only Girl Around,” and covers of David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” and Little Richards “Rip It Up.”

Of note on the commercials is the "Coors To You" campaign, naming specific states - many outside of the company's traditional western distribution network - as the company expanded to national distribution.

So....here's a chance to hear an entirely "new" band that you've probably not heard before.  And if you like what you hear, you can buy their anthology...or at the least, go over to Amazon, and sample a few tracks.  Come on....it's worth a shot.  "Down To The Bone" is an anthem that should have got a lot more airplay.

And if you don't like it...well, it only cost you some download time.  And uh...if you think it sucks, feel free to leave a comment.  Can we get some comments going?  I mean...this is a community, and YOU are part of it.  Come on...talk to me! I spend hours declicking these things, and it won't offend me if you think it blows.

I've included 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and a disc label.

Terry Reid - Superlungs

Imagine if Jimmy Page was to come up to you in 1968 and tell you he's gonna form a group and asked you to be it's lead singer. You in turn, due to your schedule tell him no but you know someone who's looking for a job. Well there you have the Terry Reid story. Until next time. See scans @ 224

Steve Earle Live In Germany 12-7-2004

Steve Earle - Live  Columbia Club
Berlin, Germany
December 5, 2004
Soundboard @320

Do you sometimes get the feeling there's a black cloud following you around?  Do you feel sometimes like your in a funk?  Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the problems of life?  Are you disgusted with man's inhumanity to man?  Do you wish you could express your frustration but are unable too?  Well here's a man that does it for ya. I'm not saying Steve's music is misery loves company (how in the world then, would he ever be able to write More Than I Can Do?)  But this man understands what it's like to be a hard working middle class citizen with no help from anyone.
