The Allman Brothers Band - Second Coming

This bootleg CD rip features alternatives from the Idewild South release as well as the band Second Coming, featuring Dickey Betts on guitar, Berry Oakley on bass, and future Double Trouble B-3 man Reece Wynans.  After the legendary five-hour Jacksonville jam that prompted Duane to bar the doorway and dare any man to fight his way past him or play in his new band, Gregg was recruited to replace Wynans.  The studio version of "Elizabeth Reed" is still as hot as the day it was recorded.

Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - Brown Star Sessions (1972)

From the source Himself of all that matters music-wise and beyond.

Point to make for you all: this man (Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart) is an artist whose music is his paint brush; a sculptor (started when he was five and featured on TV) whose chisel and hammer create images that are not from this dimension of materials that are not of this planet--and that's why he is a genius.

"Van Vliet took the rhythms of Delta blues and avant-garde jazz and melded them; they morphed into Delta jazz and avant-garde blues!"

John Lennon - KBFH 1972

John Lennon - King Biscuit Flower Hour
August 30, 1972

FM Source @320 (from flac)

On August 30, 1972, John Lennon did two shows at Madison Square Garden, New York City, as part of the One To One benefit. The first show was released as Live In New York City. According to the wikipedia, upon the album’s early 1986 release, Yoko Ono was criticized by former members of [backing band] Elephant’s Memory for using the first – and weaker – performance instead of the stronger evening show. The wikipedia also mentioned that “portions of the evening performance later saw release on the John Lennon Anthology.”

Thanks to JeffWeHo, who shared the lossless tracks on the internet, here are some tracks from the second show. JeffWeHo noted: “This is the original CD shipped to radio stations to play for the weekly ‘King Biscuit Flower Hour’. It was recorded on the same day as ‘Live In NYC’ but not the same performance.”

Track List:
01. Intro (3.5MB)
02. Mother (11.5MB)
03. Imagine (7.4MB)
04. Come Together * - omitted
05. Give Peace A Chance

* Available on the John Lennon Anthology

Absinthe instead of coffee for Sunday

Absinthe - The Original Green Manilishi

Absinthe, known as the "cocaine of the 19th century," was a distilled liquor made with the additive wormwood, from the plant of that name.

Wormwood combined with alcohol becomes a narcotic, producing a variety of disturbing physical and mental problems.

Known as "the green fairy," "the plague," "the enemy," and "the queen of poisons," absinthe caused great social problems partly because it became associated with inspiration and freedom and became a symbol of decadence--characteristics counter to Victorian sensibility and propriety.

According to those familiar with the drink, absinthe can produce euphoria without drunkenness, a heightening of the senses, and, in general, an effect similar to that produced by opium or cocaine.

Absinthe, unlike the more popular beer, was relatively expensive and its use was restricted to the middle class and to certain artistic groups, where, it is reported, its hallucinatory effects were much appreciated. Literary men and artists were particularly drawn to the drink, believing that it would inspire them with new ideas and add fuel to the creative process.

(Just a little something for Sillycidia...)

An additional attraction of the drink was the prevailing belief that it was an aphrodisiac that would stimulate sexual appetites and increase sexual enjoyment.

Inulgence in the drink, however, can result in addiction, after which one can expect rapid mental and physical deterioration. The most dangerous ingredient in absinthe is the potent, bitter oil which is extracted from the wormwood and which contains the narcotic thujone.

Though absinthe achieved greatest popularity among the French and the Swiss, many prominent English writers were fans of its narcotic properties, among them playwright William Shakespeare and diarist Samuel Pepys from Tudor England, and novelist Oscar Wilde and poet Ernest Christopher Dowson from the Victorian period.   In 1897, after a period of excessive drinking, Dowson wrote a poem entitled "Absinthia Taetra," which describes the absinthe drinker's futile attempt to escape the pain and humiliation of past memories and to experience some degree of peace.

Big Audio Dynamite - St. Georges Hall, Bradford, 1988

Big Audio Dynamite (later known as Big Audio Dynamite II and Big Audio, and often abbreviated BAD) were a British musical group formed in 1984 by the ex-guitarist and singer of The Clash, Mick Jones.

The group were noted for their effective mixture of varied musical styles, incorporating elements of punk rock, dance music, hip hop, reggae, and funk. BAD's one constant throughout frequent shifts in membership and musical direction was the vocals provided by Jones.

Them are here again!

This is exactly what I need for the end of summer: some early Van Morrison. It gives me a chance to imagine what it must have been for him to grow up and realize that he would live his dream as a musician. Just think of all those hours of listening to Ray Charles and the others and daydreaming about what he could do himself.

Leo Kottke - 12-Bar Blues, Minneapolis, MN (OOP) 1969

Leo Kottke
12-Bar Blues
Minneapolis, MN
1969

The ever-unusual master guitar picker's first release--which I last saw on an Ebay duel for $65 a few years ago.  The problem here is that Leo does here what he's NOT known best for:  singing.  And there are SOME instrumental pieces, which gives some room for relief because Leo's taken his voice up an octave.
But if you're a Kottke collector,
this is one way to get this without forking over the money.
