Mr. Bungle - Berkely, CA 1991

Rebooted...
Originally posted February 28, 2009

Mr Bungle - The Berkeley Square
Berkeley, California

January 13, 1991
Soundboard @192

Mr. Bungle were known for their distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of their songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up and an array of cover songs. An ongoing feud with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis escalated in the late 1990s, with Kiedis removing Mr. Bungle from a number of large music festivals in Europe and Australia.
Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Danny Heifetz, and Clinton "Bär" McKinnon on saxophone and woodwinds.

Critic Steve Huey wrote in Allmusic "Mr. Bungle is a dizzying, disconcerting, schizophrenic tour through just about any rock style the group can think of, hopping from genre to genre without any apparent rhyme or reason, and sometimes doing so several times in the same song."

Excellent Soundboard @192

A 21-year-old man fell to his death on Tuesday night (7/4) at Baltimore's PSINet Stadium while attending the Summer Sanitarium Tour. According to Sgt. Scott Rowe of the Baltimore Police Department, Martin Muschett of Danbury, Conn., fell roughly 80 feet from the stadium's concourse level and landed outside of the venue near an entrance gate shortly after 6:30pm. Police were still investigating the incident to determine if Muschett's fall was accidental or if he may have jumped intentionally, but there does not appear to be any foul play involved, according to Rowe. Muschett was reportedly sitting on a roughly four-foot high rail at the top of the stadium's seating area with his legs dangling over the edge of the stadium before he fell, Rowe said.

The Ashkenaz
Berkeley, CA. 1987
Soundboard @192

It's time again (by resurrection from the FBS  archives) for the usual  distribution of musical abuse for the uneducated, unknowing, and those who didn't get back home safely before the blog was nuked.  Here are four men who will hand out the punishment:  John French (yeah, the same Beefheart drummer and vocalist of the Magic Band), Fred Frith (of Henry Cow), Henry Kaiser (who went to Antarctica as a diver and photographer), and Richard Thompson--whom you should know anyway. May the Lord have mercy on your virgin ears...because we don't have any to spare.  If only these guys had made a video....

John French - drums, voice
Fred Frith - bass, guitar, voice
Henry Kaiser - guitar, voice
Richard Thompson - guitar, voice

Notes:  This gig took place just after the recording sessions of their first album, Live, Love, Larf & Loaf. The music is fresh, and they obviously have a good time.

Author's Comments:
This is a similar show to the widely circulated Swiss Meters/JB Horns show recently
released as "Live At The Moonwalker".  This show, IMHO, is better.  The songs are all
longer and more jammed out than the versions on the album show.  The 20+ minute People
Say is a thing of true beauty.

I manually edited out both reel changes and cassette flips from the source CDs.  The
master reel changes all had overlapping music indicating that more than one machine
was used in the original recording (i.e. the new reel was started before the old one
was stopped).  The cassette flips were a little trickier, but the only noticeable
transition occurs during the bass solo in People Say.  I also re-tracked the entire
show as the original track points were way off in many cases.  No other editing was
done.  Enjoy!

We RECEIVED this in MP3 form...no fucking around on our part.

Born from the tumult of spiritual rebirth and worldly rejection, David Eugene Edwards is a man uncomfortable in the skin he considers a mortal restraint. It’s not to say that the man behind the alternative country act 16 Horsepower and the mercurial but no less influential Wovenhand considers himself above this world. Quite the opposite, actually. Edwards has for years now used the reckoning between his Christian beliefs and the world around him as a conduit to create a music that is utterly earnest and unhindered by listener expectation.
