Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

I got this set without cue sheets. I downloaded 72 dpi copies from www.Discogs.com.  They're not up to my usual 300 dpi standards but they're better than no cue sheets.

You DO get 300 dpi scans of all six disc labels (yeah, I know, who cares?).

The story...as I understand it... is that Westwood One used the same tracks from the four nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December 1983 that became the "Stop Making Sense" LP, but with different mixes.  There were two broadcasts based on this material:  #CO 90-06, and #90-52.  

The two shows are SLIGHTLY different.  CO 90-06 has "Genius of Love", while 90-52 replaces that song with "Swamp."

While I don't have #90-52 in the original vinyl format, flac copies of that version are common on the Internet. This one seems to be less circulated.  
Note errors on the original cue sheets for both shows:
On #CO 90-06, This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) is titled "Native Melody," while on #90-52 it is "Nature Melody."

The music is the same basic tracks as the released album, but with slightly different mixes...and at the time of release (1990) contained unreleased material.  The best way to hear this is to BUY THE CURRENT RELEASE, which, I mean, come on, you should own by now as it's one of the greatest live albums of all time. 

The Miller Lite commercials really miss an opportunity, too.  They were touting the "Tour De Lite," a fictional bicycle race across America from Los Angeles to New York, featuring pop cultural icons Woody Harrelson, Run DMC, and the Jamaican Bobsled Team.  The premise of the on-going series of ads was that the hapless Harrelson "took a short cut" and popped up all over the globe.  At the end of the series of television ads, Mr. Harrelson climbs up out of a manhole in New York City just seconds ahead of the arriving peloton and wins the race.  In the ads on this show, he's in "Dusseldorf, Germany".  What's poorly executed is that all FIVE ads are the exact same advertisement.  It would have only taken a few minutes to have had him pop up in London, Paris, New Delhi, and Tokyo. So the ads are far less compelling on a pop-cultural level than they might have been.

Here's a really fabulous "FM" recording of Talking Heads from September 16, 1978. I don't have much information about this recording. Perhaps another Planet Rocker does. Anyone? You will notice that the original uploader notes that this comes from KSAN reels. My guess is, based on the original text file, that this was recorded directly from the reels rather than being an FM broadcast recording, but I'm only guessing. That's why I've marked this as "Pre-FM," even though, I think, that's not technically correct.

Funny story. I'd been living WAY out in rural SW Washington state. How far out? Far enough that I'd been heating and cooking with wood for nearly a decade! So, shortly after moving to Seattle my friend LouAnn asked me if I'd like to go see a movie. "What movie?" I asked. She said "Stop Making Sense." I told her I'd never heard of it. She said it was a concert film by a band called Talking Heads. Yikes! I told her that I really didn't think so as there was "simply no way in hell I'd like a band with a name like that!" (Yes, I was that dim! Some would say I still am…) She said SHE'D pay because she thought I'd really like both the band and the movie. A woman taking ME to a movie? Hell yes I went! Bottom line: I could not believe how great they were! Lou left after one showing. Me? I stayed to watch it again! Took a bus home. I probably would have stayed for a third showing if there would have been one!

If you are one of those who liked Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense and wondered why didn’t they release a complete concert instead of a truncated show, this one’s for you. Creatively, Talking Heads peaked during Remain In Light (1980) and Speaking In Tongues (1983) though some would probably say it was their debut album, Talking Heads: 77, that laid the groundwork. Musically it’s hard to beat the pulsating beats and polyrhythms of Light and Tongues. With the Renaissance Man of New Wave/Rock on stage, this is one party that is visually arresting and dares anyone to sit still. And Jonathan Demme has captured it all on film. Various versions of this show have circulated among fans, some versions whose audio quality seems worse than others (static and drop outs). Thanks then to gilde who shared this lossless version on the Dime site. glide noted: “The tapes been sitting in my vault for 24 years and I did not think to investigate until an old buddy of mine happened to mention that it was superior to all other circulating copies. That led me to do a new transfer.” Thanks also to angela for the artwork. To cop a line from Rob Tannenbaum’s review of Little Creatures in Rolling Stone, “It brings to mind a comment Pete Townshend made to RS three years ago: ‘I like New York, but I don’t see a hell of a lot happening. David Byrne has got the weight of the whole thing on his shoulders’.” Guess that’s why Byrne got the white suit with the big shoulders.

Playing on January 26, 1977, Talking Heads were still about nine months shy from the release of their debut album, 77, but the group already had their intellectually stimulating and frenzied, staccato sound patented down. Even the dance-y rhythms were already in place - listen to the rolling basslines in The Book I Read. And how can anyone not be moved by the percussive Psycho Killer?

If this gig was indeed on Jan 26 (Talking Heads played the Jabberwocky again in September that year, then they were already a very tight unit (the European tour with the Ramones the previous year probably sharpened them up) but more than that - they were already familiarising their fans with songs from their yet-to-be-released album. ("The name of this song is..." is a familiar refrain.) Seven of the 11 songs on 77 were featured here. They had even perfected Al Green's Take Me To The River, which would appear on the next album, More Songs About Buildings And Food (1978).

Talking Heads opened the show with their non-album single, Love Goes To Building On Fire, and then into the next single, Uh Oh, Love Comes To Town. While David Bryne would immensely polish up his showmanship over the years, his performance here isn't as quirky as expected but it is still an energetic performance and the pre-FM recording manages to convey the band's musical nuances. For the offbeat, the band tackles The Troggs' Love Is All Around - a version that scores high on the kooky counter but it isn't the sweet, romantic ballad Wet Wet Wet would infect the world with.

Before David Byrne got his white suit and baggy pants; before Talking Heads discovered world music and made dance respectable... It's still early days and Talking Heads have yet to thrill the world with Remain In Light and Stop Making Sense but one could already sense the excitement and potential here. Ironically, the group's album, 77, wasn't the financial hit the record label expected.
