Okay, Voodoo Wagon gang, here's a new digitization of a Rita Coolidge/Johnny Rivers syndicated radio disc...which was in DIRE SHAPE before I got my declicking hands on it...but after a few WEEKS of work, I've finally turned it into a very listenable show.
Rita Coolidge has almost NO live shows circulating, so even though this is a short, four song set...it's of some interest. Ms. Coolidge is currently out on a short tour (https://ritacoolidge.net/tour/ ) and if you're in the neighborhood, go see her live.
Johnny Rivers....jeez what can I say? This guy was a MONSTER on the Top 40 charts, and does a lot of what he does best on this live show, which is cover CLASSIC songs with a great band! If I had to offer a criticism, it's that this show DOES NOT include his great song "Secret Agent Man!" On the other hand, he covers two fabulous Chuck Berry songs with his versions of "Memphis" and "Oh Carol" and also does an impassioned version of the Band's "The Weight." Johnny Rivers is cool, man, and I suggest you check him out...this live show is a good place to start!
And the commercials by Mickey Gilley (and occasionally Johnny Lee) are great advertising art! And the whole thing is brought to you by SCHLITZ.....which was once a great American beer but has fallen upon hard times.
UPDATE: over on another blog where I posted this same show, a reader named LUCKY added a comment about his personal experiences at GILLEY'S, and he kindly granted me permission to reproduce his comment here:
"This was certainly recorded at the original Gilley's in Pasadena TX, right outside of Houston, home of Edgar and Johnny Winter. The Dallas location came long after the original burned down in the late 80's.
I went there several times in the late 70's and early 80's and it was quite a place. The parking lot consisted of continuous dirt and gravel potholes. The building looked like a few small airplane hangers had been thrown together in a remote location and then abandoned for about 50 years. Inside there were a series of football field length narrow picnic tables set perpendicular to the stage. Overhead about every 20 feet slide projectors displayed endless messages urging you to buy Mickeys latest single or try our chicken wings. In one corner were at least a dozen pool tables which might give you an idea of how large this place was. Of course, on the other side was the famous mechanical bull.
That being said, I heard some pretty great music there, Asleep at the Wheel, Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson to name a few It was like no other place I have ever been."
My response was that the joint sounds more like the "world's largest dive bar" than "the world's largest night club." Lucky concurred.
