Hello, Voodoo Gang!

Once again, I'm tackling a band I don't know, in a genre I know little about, from a city that I visited for an afternoon fifty-three years ago, broadcast on a radio station I've never heard of.

Can you guys throw me a life preserver?  I'm drownin' here...

But I'll give it a go.  First of all, this is an EXCELLENT tape sent to me from back east by our blog-buddy, Sam Eliot's Mustache.  Can I get a round of New Year's applause for him?

As I mentioned, I'm flyin' blind here (yeah, I'm mixin' metaphors, so sue me...) but for a band I've never heard of, these guys (plus a girl...) are fabulous.  An easy comparision is they're a bit like BERLIN...synth-pop, dance music, but aimed at a rock n' roll audience.

Only they're a bit darker, a bit more "Goth."

Or at lease "were" a bit Goth at the time of this recording; it looks like they smoothed things out a bit by the end of the 80s after they got a major label deal.  But in 1983? The San Fran punk rocker in me immediately recognized "No Tears" as a cover of a song from first EP put out by Tuxedomoon in 1978. You can find "No Tears" on YouTube, and as an influence, it's a pretty grim piece of work.

The next thing I learned about Pretty Poison was they're from Camden, New Jersey.  A glance at the map shows that burg is right across the river from Philadelphia.  I suspect there's probably some local angle I'm missing; here in Oakland we like to point out that we get to look across the bay at one of the world's most beautiful cities while those fools gotta look out their windows at us, and we're ugly.  So we win. If any of our Philadelphia fans can provide some local insight about Camden, it'll beat my stupid guesswork.

I also don't know anything about WYSP-FN...they mention this is from "Studio 4."  Is that a studio at the radio station itself?  Or somewhere else?  Did they really have four studios at a radio station?

I'm clueless, but what I'm not clueless about is Pretty Poison impressed the hell out of me. I consider this tape a major find; there are several songs I couldn't track down that are probably unreleased, so excavating this tape is like Schliemann finding the ruins of Troy!

Okay.

Yeah.  That's a bit of a stretch, I'll admit it.  But seriously...if you like electronic goth-rock, give this one a spin.  Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï says, "Check it out."

Oh, yeah...I almost forgot...I was guessin' at the titles.  If I'm wrong about any of them, please let me know by leaving a comment.  If you know the titles to any of the "unknown" songs up above, well, jeez...let me know that, too.  I'm happy to know I'm wrong about something, you're not going to hurt my feelings by pointing out I have no idea what I'm talking about; I've already made that clear. :)

King Biscuit produced a two part show, spread over two weeks, featuring excerpts from each artists set, and part of the big finale.  Sound quality is excellent as this is extracted from the discs.

15 Nils Lofgren - The Sun Hasn't Set
16 Nils Lofgren - Cry Tough
17 Nils Lofgren - I Wait For You

Another great one from the fabulous Sam Eliot's Mustache collection!  This is a nice vintage WMMR broadcast, featuring a nice long set from Nils Lofgren in a club appearance.

A few technical issues with the tape:
1) There's a 4 second drop out on Track 3. It might be in the broadcast itself.
2) From 47:04 to 49:42, the left channel drops down in volume (during See What A Love Can Do)  I raised the volume on that channel for the duration of the volume drop without it boosting the. You may notice a slight shift in the mix if you're listening on headphones, but on speakers you won't notice it.
3) It's missing the start of 11 ("Wonderland") due to a tape flip.

It's a great show, but the audience is louder than usual.  I'm not sure how they miked this, but you can hear the rumble of conversation in the background throughout many parts of the tape.  If you like the live audience ambience, you're going to love this.  Me?  I wanna turn around and say, "Will you shut the **** up? I'm tryin' to listen to the show here!"

Without Jem Finer, Philip Chevron (RIP) on banjo. One of the best early shows! The show circulates on CDR as "Vorsprung durch Alkohol" and features the first 16 songs - this version usually has perfect sound quality, but is missing the last 4 songs and much of the chat between songs. The full show also circulates on but is usually poorer sound quality. Shane quote: "Happy danka Germany".

There is a longer version of this up at Wolfgang's Concert Vault.  The headline there attributes the show to Wally Heider in San Francisco, but the body of the text below lists it correctly as Los Angeles.  Yes, there had been a Wally Heider in S.F., but this was not recorded there.

This show was an exciting preview of live versions of tracks that would be released two days after the original broadcast date of this show on Chicago 16. Chicago 16 is considered a "comeback" album for the band.  They added Bill Champlin, formerly of Bay Area band "The Sons of Champlin," and he sings "Satisfaction" his 1981 solo LP, Runaway.

One more tape from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection, and once again he's mailed me a band I've never heard of.  Or to be precise, a band that I heard once on the soundtrack of "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" when I watched it on television in the mid-90s.

It's a fine set from Philadelphia's Bricklin, live on WMMR-FM. If you don't know them (like me...), they're melodic pop-rock, radio-friendly, with great harmonies, and nice two-guitar interplay.  The mix on this is noteworthy, too, with good stereo separation.

Drawn mainly from their lone major label release on A&M, they open with the unreleased (as of yet...) song, "Life Is Fine," and then work their way through that first album

The sound is clear, no hiss; it sounds great for a tape that's 37 years old.  There was one spot where the volume dropped for a second, but I evened that out.  The start of the last song is cut where the tape was flipped, but other than that, it's nearly perfect.

As I mentioned, I don't know diddly about Philadelphia, but I'm learning.  And the first thing I found about Bricklin was there Facebook page, where they just announced they are releasing an 8-CD/DVD boxed set:

BRICKLIN - Anthology - The Complete Story (1979-1999)

This was announced yesterday on the Bricklin Facebook page.  "The set is limited to strictly 500 units worldwide."

With 8 CDs of songs by a band that released one album, you'd think you had literally all the songs they ever did, but here on this tape you'll find their unreleased cover of the Beatle's "I Am The Walrus."
And lucky for us, they're not releasing this radio broadcast (if they were, I wouldn't post this...). So if you like this, well...go buy the boxed set.

Other trivia:  the night after this show, Bricklin opened for Emerson, Lake, & Powell at Madison Square Garden.

Flac files of wavs.

Digitized from a cassette I received from a tape trader in Tokyo.  The generation is not known, but the sound is pretty good.  The high end is a bit dull so you may want to up the treble a bit.  The original source is an FM broadcast.

The "intro" is odd.  It's got the stage intro to the concert, then it switches to Paddy McAloon and Wendy Smith in the studio, introducing the radio broadcast of the concert.  The show is about 40 minutes long, so it's clearly an edited version of a longer show.  Why have the little bit of the stage show introduction and then edit in a studio introduction?  I'd do it as studio introduction followed by the stage intro.  I could rearrange 'em to run in that order but I figure it's better to give it you guys the way it was broadcast.

I don't speak any Japanese, but a bit of research indicates that Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Kaikan translates (roughly) as Tokyo Employees Pension Assembly Hall.  As such, there are different "Kosei Nenkins" in other cities in Japan, too.

And here's a shout out to Swappers...I digitized this one for you... just in case you didn't already have it!

Another fabulous tape from the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection.

Once again, we run into the geographic limitations of rock 'n' roll... and the limits of your humble narrator's knowledge.

Tommy Conwell escaped my attention completely in the 1980s and early 90's.  I was introduced to him through a music blog back around 2010.  So, I was late to the party.  Everything I'm about to tell you comes from Internet research... and the Internet is a cesspool of nonsense.

On Newspapers.com, I found that Conwell started out as the guitarist in Rocket 88 down in Ocean City, Maryland in 1981.  He jumped over to the Imports (who changed their name to Radio Carolyn).  Radio Carolyn put out a 45, "Punish Me With Passion," but I'm not sure if Conwell is on that record or not.

By July '84 he had moved back up to Philadelphia and was lead singer for the Young Rebels. By the end of the year, formed Tommy Conwell's Young Rumblers.

They released an LP in 1984 on local (Ardmore, PA) Antenna Records, eventually selling 70,000 copies.  A deal with major label Columbia was next, with "Rumble" released in 1988 and "Guitar Trouble" in 1990.

Singles "I'm Not Your Man" hit #74 on the Billboard Hot 100 and "If We Never Meet Again" rose to #48.

His brother was Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Joe Conwell.

The major label support broke him out of the Philadelphia club scene, and he did a national tour, playing the Roxy in Hollywood, and several shows in the Bay Area. (the Stone, the Kennel Club) in October - December 1988. He was on national TV on the Arsenio Hall Show in January 1989.

Two albums were all Columbia put out; they chose to leave his third album in the can and didn't release it.

Conwell drove a cab for a while, went back to school, and by 1998, he was a third-grade teacher who performs music when his schedule allows, and hosted a Sunday night radio show on WYSP-FM.
He was good, and with better touring support, he might have been able to build a national fan base and been Philadelphia's answer to Greg Kihn...who also, by the way...ended up as a disc jockey.

In my research, I found a lot of articles about Conwell.  I've included them in a separate text file from the articles about this specific concert.  Read them all, as there may be a pop quiz later next week.

Also...I want to note that I didn't find anything written about him in the Bay Area papers.  There are ads for the club dates, but no one reviewed the shows.  Compared to the huge amount of coverage in the northeast...and getting concert reviews in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston...San Francisco was not paying attention.

The story behind this tape is the guy I was trading with had an actual copy of the BBC transcription disc.  It sounds like it, but unless I've done it myself I'm never 100% sure.  The songs on my tape had some vinyl surface noise, so it's a believable story.  I've gone through it and cleaned the clicks 'n' pops, so it sounds pretty darned good.

"Cars and Girls" came out over two years later in March of 1988 on "From Langley Park to Memphis."  "Wicked Things" and "Tiffany's" wouldn't show up until "Protest Songs" in June 1989... three and a half years after this was originally broadcast on BBC Radio 1.

Another tape from the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection.

First of all, I was in Philadelphia once, for an afternoon, back in July of 1971.  So, I don't know diddlysquat about the city. Everything I'm about to type I found on the Internet, and that means it's not reliable.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News (Feb. 28, 1986)
"WYSP (FM/94 now offers a local shot of talent every Friday afternoon at 5, and airs live bands from the Khyber Pass Fridays at midnight."  This concert is sourced from one of those shows.

The show is hosted by WYSP-FM's Mean Ed Green, with deejay duties back at the station handled by by Debbi Calton.

The Khyber Pass Pub is still in open.

I've never heard of Suze Cosmo, and there's not much on the Internet about the band. Don't let that put you off... this is pop-rock, with a solid grounding in R&B.  I'd say their primary influence was Motown but the Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett covers show they had a couple of Atlantic LPs, too.

I found lots of listings for the band in 1983 to 1986, but nothing before (or after), so it looks like they had a brief three year long career. They played at clubs like Nardi's, J.C. Dobbs, Khyber Pass, Empire Rock Club, 24 East Cabaret, and John Holmes Restaurant.

It's a lot of fun; they had the talent and enough good self-penned songs that should have gotten a record contract, but it looks like they only managed to put out a self-released 45 and an EP (see below).

But while their discography is thin... I found another listing from June 14, 1985 that mentioned they did another live WYSP midnight broadcast.  So there's more out there.

I didn't find any newspaper listing for this show, but found a few other appearances by the band at the Khyber Pass, so I've included them.  I also found a great two-page center spread from the entertainment section on the local Philadelphia scene.  All that's in the "Artwork" folder.

By Special Request from Germany!  Our pal Propylaen2001 asked if I had this; I didn't, but our behind-the-scenes friend Sam Eliot's Mustache had a copy back east; he shipped me a CD-R and emailed the scans.  I've chaptered the files, and here they are!

The big mystery on this one is the source and date of the Go material.  Our pal Bill Minkin introduces it as Go "recorded in England in 1976." I've got a newspaper clipping from the Acton Gazette that says "Japanese percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta has formed an exciting new group featuring Stevie Winwood, which is about to go on the road.  Only one British date has been arranged, and will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday."  That gives us a date of May 29, 1976.

Well, we don't trust, we verify. Or at least try to verify.  Over at Concert Vault they have a Go show identified as "Palais des Sports, Paris, France June 12, 1976."  The Concert Vault version of "Man of Leo" has the same vocal of "come on, get your hands together" at the start as the KBFH "London" version.

The two versions are from the same show. My understanding is the Paris show was the source of the official release Go...Live From Paris, and that the Vault tracks don't match the official release.

Klaus-schulze.com lists only these two shows (London and Paris).  No other concerts were listed.

I'm going with the London date.  My conclusion is that the streaming version has the wrong date and venue.
