Another multi-generation WXRT-FM tape that I got in trade back in the 1980s.  Good show, from one of WXRT's Sunday night rebroadcasts.  Sometimes they edited the show down from a longer original show, so there's a possibility that there's a longer version of this out there.

Back when we traded tapes through the mail, we would often end up with space for a few extra songs.  Most traders would add in a few tracks to fill up the blank space.  On this show, the trader added two outtakes of unknown date.  What with all the releases of bonus tracks over the years, these may have been released by now.

I've found press coverage confirming the date of the show, and it's in the Artwork folder.

Another tape discovered down in Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï's basement.  I got this in trade, and it's several generations down the road from the master.  There's hiss, but not so much as to ruin it.

I found an entertainment listing in the Chicago Tribune that confirms the date of the show.  This was from a later rebroadcast on WXRT's Sunday Night "Unconcert."

These rebroadcasts are often edited down from a longer original radio broadcast...so there may be a longer original concert.

Okay, you guys...yeah, I'm piling this RIGHT ON TOP of the Pretenders show down the blog here....

The Pretenders show is friggin' useless, as it's been released, and the only reason I'm posting it is to document it as a radio show that existed.  In short, it's here for the commercials and the announcements; go buy the 3-cd version of Pretenders II if you want to hear the concert.  I'm feeling guilty for subjecting Our Beloved Audience to it, as this sort of documentation is a bit crazy. Does anyone actually CARE about a 44 year old radio show when you can buy the full concert?

PLUS, your pal Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï has been on a run of NBC The Source shows for a while, and I don't want to get all BORING doing the same thing over and over and over and over.  So...this is here just to break things up a bit!

17 Richard Thompson - Let's Talk About Us
18 Richard Thompson - Great Balls of Fire (fades and cuts off)

Another tape that I got in trade.  Unknown generation...but it's low, not much in the way of hiss.

The date of the show is confirmed by a newspaper clipping (included).

The last song ("Great Balls of Fire") is slowly faded out, then cuts off before the fade is complete.

I've checked set lists I found on the Intertoobs, and "Great Balls" was the last song, so we're not missing anything else after it.

There were two sets at Tut's that night, and there's supposedly also an early set that was also broadcast by WXRT-FM.

Rock and Roll Geography
As you know, I run searches to find faint footprints from the past are out there on the Internet.  Searches for common names like "Richard Thompson" turn up a lot of results; he was married in Plano, TX, he's on the Memorial Hospital board, his car hit a tree...all of them not OUR Richard Thompson.

Searches for "Tut's" are problematic as the Optical Character Recognition programs have trouble with blurry scans and yellowing newsprint, returning results for the abbreviation "Tues".

I tried looking for the address of Tut's at 959 W. Belmont, and looked on Google Maps...and was gobsmacked to recognize the building.  I've never been to Chicago but hey, that's now Blaze Pizza, and that used to be the Quiet Knight club that turned up on our Randy Newman and Bob Marley shows already posted here.  While I didn't find anything with those searches, I did turn up a review from a few days prior. It's from across the state line in Wisconsin and had a list of band members.

Okay, we've got a serendipitous coincidence here.  A full year ago - December 20, 2023 - I ripped a first generation cassette for editing.  Our pal Sam Eliot's Mustache sent boxes of tapes, one thing led to another, and a full year later, that folder was still sitting on my desktop, untouched. As Sam's sending more cassettes this coming year, I couldn't stand the thought of looking at the ****ed thing for another three-hundred-sixty five sunrises and sunsets, so I carved out some time and got it done in a single evening.

The only thing left was to write a .txt file, and I figured that could wait... until I woke up the very next morning and found that SilentWay posted one of the bootleg versions of this WXRT-FM radio broadcast.  I figure this is fortuitous chance,  the Fates urging me to complete my task, so here it is.

As mentioned, this has been bootlegged, not just as Institutionalized, but under titles including It Ain't Over 'Til The Fat Roadies Play, Hanging It Up, The Farewell Gig, The Farewell Gig - FM Broadcast: Grant Park, Chicago, July 4th 1991.

This version is NOT from the bootlegs, but from a known first-generation tape I received in trade in the early 1990s from a trader in the Chicago area. With a little blip missing due to the tape flip, it's complete from the start of the broadcast to when they send it back to the studio for commercials.

To my ear, this isn't better or worse than the bootleg.  I think the boot has a bit more high end to it.

What IS different is the boot cuts off before the end of Hootenany, and doesn't have the WXRT announcers Frankie Lee & Tom Marker talking at the end of the show.  There may be one or two WXRT station identifications on my version that aren't on the boot, but I didn't spend a lot of time cross referencing them.

The Replacements were playing their very last concert at this gig.  Famously, they left the stage one band member at a time at the end of the gig, with a roadie stepping in, taking over the instrument from the band member.

The only thing to wrap up is the greater event at which this concert took place:  Taste of Chicago.

Taste of Chicago was (is?) the city's premier outdoor festival, the city's most famous summer event, drawing visitors from all over the globe.  The event ran for eight days, attendance was expected to be 2.5 million people.  The press claims it was the biggest food festival in the world.  The budget for this street party was $10 million.

I've included press coverage of the event.  It's not about the Replacements, but it's what I found, so I included it.

Besides the Replacements, musical acts including Tommy James & the Shondells, Steppenwolf, the Guess Who, the Temptations, and the Four Tops.

So...here's a new source for the show that SilentWay posted yesterday.  Compare!  Contrast!  Comment!

This last album is where the bootleg gets its name – “It Ain’t Over ‘Til The Fat Roadies Play.” The last song of the set was the band’s ramshackle opening and title track from 1983′s Hootenanny. Much as the band had done in Blackberry Way studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota – when separated from the sight of the producer, the band had switched instruments and played the title track with what can generously be described as inept competence – the band members, one by one, departed the stage and let their respective roadies replace them on stage. This is also bootlegged as Institutionalized as evidenced on the artwork.

Set List:
1. “I Will Dare”
2. “Bent Out of Shape”
3. “Achin’ to Be”

Comments: Show performed 24 years ago tonight. With the band celebrating its 25th anniversary of the release of its first album "Vivid" thought it would fun to up this anniversary show. Band pulls out a cool version of Zep's "The Ocean" on this night, preceded my "Mannish Boy" by Chicago's own Muddy Waters and followed by Bad Brains "Salin' On." The Chicago gig came just as the band learned "Vivid" had gone platinum. Also tonight 4/7/13 the band played "Cult of Personality" as part of Wrestlemania 29, so nice to see some exposure for the band.

This is a low generation copy of a WXRT-FM Budweiser Sunday Night Concert rebroadcast of the Sugarcubes live at Cabaret Metro on August 11, 1988. There's some hiss and a bit of radio noise but this sounds pretty good.

One of the first things I do when I tackle an old tape is to check to see if it has been officially issued, or if there's already a circulating copy in better quality.  Why should  I spend an hour digitizing my master cassette Springsteen at Winterland when he's released it on his website?

In this case, I found the blog https://gudmundsdottirbjork.blogspot.com/ which has a lot of Sugarcubes / Bjork downloads available (and which looks to possibly be written or sponsored by Bjork or someone connected to her).

Sure enough, I found the Cabaret Metro show and downloaded it... and... uh... to my ears, I think my cassette sounds slightly better.  Unlike the Springsteen CDs, this is not an official release, it's an off the air tape someone digitized, and it's not a master. So, I went ahead and digitized my version.  This isn't a huge upgrade in quality, so don't expect miracles. In comparing the two versions, my cassette has a bit more dynamic range; the download looks more compressed.  At the very least, my version is chaptered into individual tracks, while the download has the entire show as a single flac file.

And if you like Bjork, check that site out.  There's a LOT of downloads there.

I also found a TON of 1988 American press coverage of the Sugarcubes...46 newspaper clippings, most of them articles about the band, but also concert reviews.  While most coverage was positive ("unsettling but fascinating," "unique," "quirky") several critics were downright appalled by their show at the I-Beam.  The writer for the NME said they "were crap."  The review of the same gig by the Knight-Ridder writer was picked up for distribution nationwide said it was "an excruciating show" played with "monolithic ineptitude."

And...as it turns out, I have an uncirculated audience tape of the I-Beam show those two critics attended.  I've never had the guts to tackle it, as identifying the song titles was beyond my limited ability.  But once again, the Internet managed to provide a set list, so I'm putting that one up, too.  Both of them are in a single download, along with the press clippings.

Here you go! What do you think of their 1988 live tour?  Was this quirky or crap?

This is a tape I got in trade back in the late 1980s.  Back when we used to assign "letter grades" to our trading lists, I rated this as a "B+."  These days... I'd call it a "B."  There's a background of radio hiss apparent when the deejays are talking, plus a few little blurts of radio static.  It's not bad, it's perfectly listenable, but somebody somewhere must have a better recording of this one.

The show is a later rebroadcast of the original concert.  Sometimes these WXRT rebroadcasts are edited down from a longer original concert.  I don't know if that's the case here, though.

There was no date on the cassette, most likely because there's no mention of the date by the disc jockey.  I was able to track down the date of the show by using Newspapers.com, and I've included the clippings to document the date.

UPDATE!  We have confirmed that my version is EDITED DOWN from a longer show. A member of Our Beloved Audience, Mr. Zigzagwanderer says, "I have a version of this with four more tracks - Candy Man / Paradise Place / Israel / Spellbound."

As Mr. Z shared the link...and as it is BETTER than my old tape, as it's sourced from a silver CD, here it is:

I hereby award Mr. Z the priceless award of one Voodoo Wagon No-Prize!  Yes, he will be the envy of all of his friends, and all the girls will want to get to know him better!

Bob Marley & the Wailers / The Quiet Knight, Chicago, IL June 10, 1975 WXRT-FM rebroadcast

Bob Marley
Quiet Knight, Chicago, IL
June 10, 1975 (according to currently circulating tapes)
digitized Aug. 2013 from a 1st generation copy on TDK SA100

My copy did not have a date, as it was from a rebroadcast of the show in the late 1980s.
Marley played Monday and Tuesday, June 9 and June 10 (based on the review and the June 8 entertainment listing.) A second entertainment listing from Friday June 13 says Marley played two shows a night June 13, 14, and 15 Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  I note that the first entertainment listing had "Martin Hull and Ricky Jay" scheduled for Wednesday thru Sunday, so it looks like there was enough response that they bumped the other acts and added Marley for more shows.

There's a good analysis of this show, and information about the Quiet Knight at: https://legendaryreggae.com/2013/01/30/greatest-bootleg-ever/

I also lifted a Quiet Knight newspaper clipping from that site and added it to the artwork, and "Martin Hull" turns out to be Martin Mull.

20 Randy Newman - Lonely At The Top
21 Randy Newman - Love Story
22 Randy Newman - Davey The Fat Boy
23 Announcer - WXRT-FM Outro

You get: flac files of .wavs, plus a newspaper review, and three entertainment listings.

Here's another tape I got in trade.  It's of unknown generation. This one I got from a trader in the Chicago area.  As it's from a WXRT-FM rebroadcast in the 1980s, it's likely my copy is a first generation.  There's some hiss but it's pretty minimal.

As to the date of the rebroadcast, the WXRT Intro mentions Newman's soundtrack to the The Natural, so it's after the May 1984 release date of the movie.  It leaves Newman as being without a recording contract, which puts it before the release of Land of Dreams in September 1988.

There's no venue mentioned, and the date announced is just "1972."

A search on Newspapers.com turns up a review and some entertainment listings from 1972.  Newman played the Quiet Knight in Chicago on April 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 (Wednesday through Sunday), with three shows on Friday and Saturday, and two shows on Sunday. It is likely he played two shows a night on Wednesday and Thursday, too, but there were no individual listings for those nights, so that's guess.  David Bromberg was the opening act.

Tickets were a $3.00 cover with a two-drink minimum.

The Quiet Knight was at 953 W. Belmont Avenue.  It looks like the building is still there and it's now "Blaze of Pizza."

The KSAN-FM Boarding House tape from two months later (June 11) is similar, and far better known.  It's been pressed up on CD several times.

I'm surprised the Chicago concert is less well known. This has 19 songs, one more than the KSAN show.  Chicago has Young Girl, Cowboy, Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear, and Tickle Me, and San Francisco swaps those for Lover's Prayer, Dayton Ohio 1903, The Beehive State, Linda, and Memo To My Son.

Bodeans / Tower Records, Chicago Oct. 11, 1993 - promo CD + broadcast version

Okay, you guys...this is just one more example of how the VW goes the EXTRA MILE.  We're giving you NOT ONLY the relatively easy to find BoDeans promo CD of their "Record Release Party at Tower Records," but also the original FM broadcast of the show, with an additional two songs!

The promo CD is extracted from the original promo CD, and the broadcast version from a first generation tape on a Maxell XL-II high bias tape, so it sounds pretty good.

You can do an A/B comparison of the two sources!  Wow!  You can ponder why the record company left the two songs off the CD when they easily had the room to include them!

And...of course I found a "Radio Highlights" listing in the Chicago Tribune for October 11, 1993 that confirms the date and venue are correct!

The BoDeans
Live @ Tower Records 10/11/93
01 BoDeans - Intro

06 BoDeans - Fadeaway
07 BoDeans - Stay On
08 BoDeans - Feed The Fire
09 BoDeans - Do I Do
10 BoDeans - Good Things

This is a "PROMO ONLY. NOT FOR SALE" CD that was edited down from a WXRT-FM broadcast.

The original broadcast had two more songs on it, adding "She's A Runaway" and the big hit "Closer To Free."

The promo CD had a back cover only, there was no front cover or booklet.  I've included 300 dpi scans of the CD disc, and the back cover.

This tape has a few minor glitches, where the stereo collapsed into mono.  All glitches are less than a second and are mainly noticable when listening with headphones.  The errors are in the original broadcast and are not artifacts of the digitization process.

I've held off on digitizing cassettes I got in trade...as they're all first generation (or lower), I figure that someone, somewhere, has a master tape so why bother?  But it's time to start working on the ones I have that are low generation, so along with the Sam Elliott's Mustache collection, I'll be dropping a few decent sounding cassettes from my basement archives every so often.

So...here's a Lou Reed show I got from a trader in the Chicago area.  It's a first generation off of his master cassette.

The show was a free weekend concert with Los Lobos, Lou Reed, Poi Dog Pondering, and John Wesley Harding celebrating WXRT-FM's 20th anniversary.  Anheiser-Busch sponsored it as the "Budweiser Twilight Concert."

Three tracks from this show were on the bootleg CD "Real Good Time Performances" (Sound Alive SA 24.007, Germany, 1994).  Three tracks are on Amsterdam 1992 (ARR 94.057), a 1994 German unofficial release.  All sixteen tracks are on Power And Glory The Swingin' Pig Records, TSP-CD-147-1/2, 2 CD's, Luxembourg, 1993

Amazon.co.uk has mp3 downloads under "Lou Reed - WXRT FM Broadcast Budweiser Twilight Concert World Music Theatre Chicago IL 12th..."  This is not available for streaming in the U.S.A., so I can't sample it to advise you on quality.  If any of the Voodoo Gang not so limited can give it a spin and drop a comment, we thank you in advance.

It's a good show, especially if you like the Magic and Loss album, as seven of the sixteen tracks are from it.  I've included two newspaper clippings; the first is a "radio highlights" schedule, and the second a review of the concert.

You know the Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï drill: flac files of wavs.

19 Hot Nights In Georgia (bonus track, not from Cabaret Metro show)

Recorded off of a Sony UX 60, April 1, 2023.

One more from the Sam Elliot's Mustache Collection.  This one he thinks he got in trade, as it's a Chicago broadcast.  It's likely a first generation, definitely not a master, but the tape is in pretty good shape and the band (as usual) is smokin' hot.

It's clear from the "Outro" that this was from a rebroadcast of the show as the deejay says it was from "last April."  I've confirmed the handwritten date on the cassette with a newspaper clipping from the Chicago Tribune of April 19, 1985 that mentions the show.

There was one stray track at the end that is NOT from the same show; there was nothing written on the cassette identifying the date, venue, or source.

Now...once again I'm going to turn to Our Beloved Audience and ask for help.  WHO IS THE WXRT ANNOUNCER?  If someone comes up with it, I'll retag this and repost so that omission is corrected.  This one is more of a trivia question, so there's no Voodoo Wagon No-Prize involved.  :)

Robert Cray / Grant Park, Chicago, IL -WXRT-FM - July 4, 1988 1st gen tape

.....and here's another one.....only this time I know that it's a first generation tape, right from a master of the broadcast. So... while it's not perfect,  it's close.  If you like Robert Cray, you'll like it.

This is the very first "Taste of Chicago" summer show put on by radio station WXRT at the Petrillo Bandshell in Grant Park.  Robert Cray headlined, and the other bands were Graham Parker, Timbuk 3, and the Insiders.
