Another recording from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection, and another disputed recording date.
Discogs says, "Recorded Live at the Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, Missouri, March 26, 1980 - "Victims Of The Fury" Tour"
The "Shout In Madhouse" bootleg says March 26.
A Guitars 101 post says March 26.
Setlist.fm has March 26.
But Concert Archives has April 9.
Which is it? Four sources say March 26, one says April 9.
So, I checked the St. Louis Post Dispatch and found six print ads for April 9 and 10. It was originally advertised as just April 9. The March 16th ad says "NOW TWO NIGHTS." There are no ads for March 26.
That's the first line of argument: there are ads confirming April 9, and no ads for March 26.
There's a second argument against March 26 based on the supposed tour itinerary.
Setlist.fm lists has the tour running:
March 22 New Orleans
March 23 Houston
March 26 St. Louis
March 27 Santa Monica
The run from New Orleans through St. Louis is plausible. You can do those drives in a single day. So, yes, they could play Houston and drive 800 miles to St. Louis, bypassing Dallas, Memphis, Tulsa and other cities that you'd probably play first. I doubt that it happened, but it is physically possible to do it.

Thanks to Gman for supplying this great ticket scan! |
But the jump from St. Louis to California is impossible. That's an 1,800 mile drive. At 60 miles per hour, that's 30 hours. You can't break down the equipment, drive it to the Pacific coast, and set up the equipment in time. It can't be done. Yes, maybe they packed everything on to an airplane in the morning and flew, but that's not how touring is usually handled.
I'm going with the April date.
I also included a trade ad for The Source from the month prior to this show that documents that in April 1980 there were "over 100 Source affiliates representing 70 markets." That gives us an idea of how many of these shows were pressed.
