Our pal JustDave posted one of his excellent extractions of a Westwood One Concerts & Specials Chicago show back in December.  That version is PC83-17 (aired May 14, 1983) and was a 1 hour show, whereas this show (PC83-39) is 1 hour, 23 minutes.  His rip is at
 http://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/search/label/Chicago

We're still investigating the Concerts and Specials shows; they're not as common as the Superstar Concert or In Concert series.  Usually,a syndicated shows have a set length of an hour, or an hour and a half.

As for the music...it's Chicago, live in Chicago, which is such an obvious and great idea that I wonder why there's no Boston Live In Boston album.  Songs unique to this version are "Change," "Follow Me," "Just You 'n' Me," "Satisfaction," and "Scrapbook."  The running order is different than on PC83-17, too.  While Chicago played two sets that night, all tracks sound like the same version to me.

PC83-17 runs:
Beginnings
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is
If You Leave Me Now
Hard To Say I'm Sorry/Getaway
Saturday In The Park
Feelin' Stronger Every Day
Ballet (Make Me Smile)
I'm A Man
Gimme Some Lovin'
25 or 6 to 4

There's also a difference in the advertising.  The show is sponsored by Cadillac, while the earlier show is Budweiser, Gillette, Snickers, and Agree.

The Mermen, Slim's, San Francisco, CA Feb. 21, 1992

The Mermen
Slim's, San Francisco, CA
February 21, 1992
soundboard

01 The Mermen - Bondage of the Sea (fades in)
02 The Mermen - Run, Don't Walk
03 The Mermen - Ali Baba
04 The Mermen - Raglan
05 The Mermen - Ocean Beach
06 The Mermen - My Black Bag
07 The Mermen - Gulf of Spleens
08 The Mermen - Honeycomb
09 The Mermen - Abalone Daze
10 The Mermen - Silly Elephant Who Stomped To Tea
11 The Mermen - Unknown title (cuts off at end)
12 The Mermen - The Drift (cut off)

My recollection on this was that my brother was there with a team from San Francisco State University to videotape the first appearance by Dick Dale in the City (yes, we call it that, as Little Richard put it, "Shut up!").  And while they were there, they recorded this off the soundboard.  Whether or not this is a first generation or not, it SOUNDS GREAT.

If you don't know the Mermen, they're "modern surf instrumental."  Lots of what made the original surf music great: watery, wavey spring reverb, clean guitar tones and melody guitar lines, and surf rock pounding drums.

Devon Allman - guitar/vocals

The legacy, spirit and music mastery of The Allman Brothers Bands not only survives, but thrives in the hands of Devon Allman (son of Gregg Allman) and Duane Betts (son of Dickey Betts) in form of their band — The Allman Betts Band. The band evokes all the magic and beauty from The Allmans deep catalog, but it’s also inherently their own band. The duo have been able to put their own soulful signature on this band — making it distinctly their own.

I'm not much of a fan of audience recordings, mainly because of sound quality and crowd noise but occasionally I find one that is exceptional like this one, Hope you enjoy!

Much appreciation to the original poster!

Okay, Voodoo Gang! When I started posting tapes back in 2011 (thanks to SilentWay graciously extending an invitation to me, a yappy commentator on the blog that he'd never met...), I started out by posting master copies of cassettes I'd recorded off the local radio.  I was reluctant to share tape I'd got in trade as they were several generations down the road from a master tape.  I figured someone, somewhere, had a better copy, so why should I be so presumptuous as to share my noisy trash?

At the same time, as a collector...I pursued low generation tapes.  I looked for trade lists and traded for masters, or first generation copies.  Not always, of course, and I traded for a lot of tapes that were of unknown generation.

So here's an unknown generation tape, that I marked on my list as an "A" for trade. I'm gonna guess I this is a 1st gen tape, as it sounds great.  Somewhere out there, there's a lower generation, but the odds of finding it in 2025 grow dimmer every day.

The Edward Haber mentioned on Track 22 produced and recorded several albums for Mr. Thompson over the years, including 1993's "Watching The Dark" compilation.

We DO have newspaper proof of the date of the show.

And... We have A Flock of Seagulls doing the Budweiser jingle on the A Flock of Seagulls concert!  That's like...uh...some sort of commentary on art and commerce or something.  Look, it's late, I'm just gonna put this one up and hope you enjoy it.  Get some DEP Gel, pile your hair up into a New Wave quiff that reaches the orbit of Pluto, and enjoy the music.

Brought to you by the Collective of Live Music. While our pal Sam sent me a CD-r to chapter, this one is from the Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï copy of the records.  I will eventually chapter and share Sam's copy, too!

The Greg Kihn Band was broadcast nationally on July 4th from Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Starfleet Blair.  The show was syndicated two months later on NBC's The Source.  The ads for the show promoted the concert as "Kihndepence Day."  This source is not from the satellite broadcast but from the LPs.

This was in keeping with Mr. Kihn's pun-filled album titles.  He released ten albums between 1976 and 1985, and six of them had titles with a pun based on his name.  This trend continued with the release of his first greatest hits compilation ("Kihnsolidation: The Best Of Greg Kihn") in 1989, his live album in 1991 ("Unkihntrollable"), plus "Kihn of Hearts" in 1992, "True Kihnfessions" in 2000, and "Rekihndled" in 2017.

I think Kihn missed a trick; back in the early 80s I made a Kihn "best of" for a friend entitled, "FucKihn' Great: The Best of Greg Kihn."

Here in the East Bay, Kihn did a short stint behind  the counter at Berkeley's Rather Ripped Records. Kihn has the sensibilities of a record store clerk; he's not only a musician, he's a fan of music in general.

This sensibility shows up in his choice of covers.  Kihn covers "Paint It Black," "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66," "I Fall To Pieces," "Train Kept A-Rollin'," "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," and "The Kids Are Alright."  While the sources of half of these are R&B artists like Nat "King" Cole, Tiny Bradshaw, Solomon Burke, and the Temptations, most of them came to Kihn through the British Invasion, in particular in covers by the Rolling Stones. The most interesting cover to me is Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces;" not an obvious choice for a rock and roller.

This is one of the longest Kihn concerts available. It's also noteworthy that Kihn does not appear to have been bootlegged.  I don't recall ever seeing a vinyl boot of a Kihn show, and there doesn't appear to be any 1990s silver bootlegs issued by the copyright-gap European bootleggers.  Why is a a bit of a mystery...Kihn's shows often feature interesting covers and medleys.  He doesn't just trot out the same set the same way, over and over, and he certainly did a lot of radio shows, so the source material was there.  But no one bootlegged him.

Too Bad is unreleased...but also turns up on the Westwood One Concerts & Specials PC-83-15 which you can find at The New JDP  http://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/, run by our friend and associate JustDave!

It's time again (by resurrection from the FBS  archives) for the usual  distribution of musical abuse for the uneducated, unknowing, and those who didn't get back home safely before the blog was nuked.  Here are four men who will hand out the punishment:  John French (yeah, the same Beefheart drummer and vocalist of the Magic Band), Fred Frith (of Henry Cow), Henry Kaiser (who went to Antarctica as a diver and photographer), and Richard Thompson--whom you should know anyway. May the Lord have mercy on your virgin ears...because we don't have any to spare.  If only these guys had made a video....

John French - drums, voice
Fred Frith - bass, guitar, voice
Henry Kaiser - guitar, voice
Richard Thompson - guitar, voice

Notes:  This gig took place just after the recording sessions of their first album, Live, Love, Larf & Loaf. The music is fresh, and they obviously have a good time.

The print ad in Radio and Records says "An encore presentation of this spellbinding live concert. Broadcast via satellite from New York's Radio City Music Hall, May 26, 1983. Produced exclusively for The Source by Starfleet Blair Inc. Mixed by Rhett Davies and Effanel Music. If you missed the show the first time, you won't want to miss it again."

This may have had a custom cover on a box...at least there is one pictured on the Discogs listing.  I've included some press coverage, although most it is the same article chopped up and repeated over a few days.

This is from the syndicated re-broadcast of the show, not from the original satellite broadcast.
This was a good concert and was bootlegged by the Swinging Pig as "Out of the Blue."

Roxy Music never broke through in America. This period saw AVALON hit #53 on the Billboard album charts at the same time it was #1 in the U.K., Australia, and half a dozen European countries.

What do YOU think?

Blue Cheer – Unreleased LP 1980

THIS IS AN UNRELEASED LP RECORDED IN 1980. I HAD THIS MASTER REEL TO REEL FOR 20 YEARS, I DON’T REMEMBER WHO GAVE THIS TO ME. ALL THE INFOS I HAVE ARE HERE. THIS LP HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 1984 MEGAFORCE LP’S “THE BEAST…IS BACK”. I DON’T KNOW THE LINE-UP, FOR SURE THERE ARE DICKIE PETERSON AND PAUL WHALEY, BUT NOT TONY RAINER ON VOCALS, THE SINGER IS DIFFERENT. SOUND QUALITY IS EXCELLENT, AND COMPARING THIS TO THE 1984 LP, THIS IS LESS HARD AND CLOSER TO ALBUMS LIKE “NEW IMPROVED” AND “THE ORIGINAL HUMAN BEING”.

05 Not For Nothing
06 Shape I'm In (Joe Camilleri)

This version from Hans Devente's tape, posted as a single flac file in June 2014. His source was marked as VARA-FM, the former Omroepvereniging VARA public radio broadcaster which merged with BNN in 2014 to form BNN-VARA.

I normalized channels, removed any audio glitches, and chaptered it.

Hans had this cassette marked as "The Venue, London" with a date of April 9, 1984.

On listening to the tape again in 2025, Mr. Finn introduces Joe Camilleri (of Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons) to the audience as "your very own Joe Camilleri."  I had to look up where Mr. Camilleri was from...and it wasn't London.  His family immigrated to Australia from Malta.

Further exploration led to the Setlist.fm website, which lists the London show and the April 9 date, but also has a show at the Venue, Melbourne, Australia, from October 29, 1983.  As we have seen before, Setlist.fm occasionally aggregates incorrect data.  Just because something is written on the Internet does not make it true (and that goes for what I write, too...but I do try to provide documents to help prove my claims).

Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons were from Melbourne. It was clear Camilleri was being introduced to a hometown audience.

My conclusion is the attribution to London on April 9 is incorrect.  I found an ad and press coverage for the October 29 date in Melbourne.
