Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music.
Includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and both CD discs.

I posted a version of this last year.  The show was sent to me by our reader Rudolf, who tracked down a copy of the original broadcast over on Soulseek.  Unfortunately, it ran slightly fast, which I fixed by slowing down the tracks. We compared it with bootlegs, which proved to sound better. While our version was a decent listen, it wasn't as good as it could be.

I found the original Album Network CDs of the show on EBAY, and now we can present to you an
updated, pre-FM version, ripped directly from the original radio CDs.  I've included all of the commercials.  All of the tracks are identified as to source.  I'm deleting the previous version from our archives as this is now the definitive version.

While this circulates as "The Garage Tapes," that name is not mentioned on the CDs, the cue sheet or by the announcer.

The show was hosted by Q102 (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) disk jockey Redbeard and distributed by the Album Network.

The show was officially issued as a promo CD in Canada (without the commercials).

The original broadcast presented eleven songs recorded live in early December 1991 at Belmont Mall Studio in Belmont, Indiana.  The promotional CD cover refers to the studio as "The Garage."  In listening to the show, Mellencamp has both a garage rehearsal space for band practice, and a recording studio.  This was recorded in the studio, not the garage rehearsal space.

Interspersed with the music were short interviews by Redbeard with Mellencamp and band members. The broadcast also included two songs ("Small Town," "Pink Houses") recorded earlier at Q102 in October, a live concert version of "Like A Rolling Stone" recorded in 1987 that surfaced a non-LP B-side, and "Sweet Suzanne" from the upcoming FALLING FROM GRACE soundtrack.

Mellencamp's film "Falling From Grace" was released seven weeks after this show on February 21, 1992.  The soundtrack's first release was "Sweet Suzanne" by the Buzzin' Cousins, a supergroup composed of Mellencamp, Joe Ely, Dwight Yoakam, James McMurtry, and John Prine.  This came out on January 20th, so this radio show preview was in advance of the release of both the official soundtrack and the movie.

There are three bootlegs on Discogs sourced from this show.  Two of them have identical tracks lists: "John's Garage Tape (Unbelievable Music UM 002) and "Live Rehearsals" (Kiss The Stone KTS 090).  Both include tracks from the show but drop "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Sweet Suzanne," and adds two 1982 King Biscuit tracks.  A third bootleg named "Welcome To The Garage" (Beech Marten Records BM 068) skip the KBFH tracks but include "Like A Rolling Stone."  None of the bootlegs have the interviews or "Sweet Suzanne."  "Welcome To The Garage identifies the recording date as January 6, 1992. That's NOT the recording date; it's the air date listed on the cue sheet.

During the broadcast, the two acoustic songs from Q102 were not identified as being from another source.  There's no source listed on the bootlegs or the officially released promo CD. The promotional CD did not identify that "Small Town" and "Pink Houses" were from another date and location.

Redbeard also hosted the syndicated interview show In The Studio.  Our reader, Rudolf, was exploring Redbeard's www.inthestudio.net website, which features tracks and interviews from a variety of sources. Rudolf found the two mystery studio songs are posted there in streaming audio, identified as recorded on October 1, 1991, at Q102 in Dallas. Playing with Mr. Mellencamp are Mike Wanchic and Kenny Aronoff.  Rudolf took the time to compare them to the bootleg versions, and they’re the same tracks.

As a bonus, the relevant streaming audio from the In The Studio site is included as mp3s.  The October 1991 session had one additional song not included with the January 1992 broadcast ("Rain On The Scarecrow").

The version of "Like A Rolling Stone" was released on the B-side of "Pop Singer" and as the B-side of "Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) and is sourced from the Lonesome Jubilee Tour in 1987.

So....this is the Definitive Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï Documented Digization; don't delay, download directly!

By the time of this show, Westwood One split its In Concert show into "In Concert" and "In Concert: New Rock."  This was in response the split of the rock radio audience into "Classic Rock" and "Indie/Alternative" audience segments. Westwood One kept the same numbering system for both shows, which means there is also an In Concert 93-42 featuring Meatloaf / Joe Satriani.

Putting artists in one genre or another didn't always make sense, and the station's target audiences didn't always line up, either.  Here in the Bay Area, KFOG aimed more at the older demographic than rival Live 105 but both stations played artists like 10,000 Maniacs, Spin Doctors, and Counting Crows... all of which were on In Concert: New Rock shows.  It's a testament to David Bowie's ability to stay relevant that he appeared on the both shows.

But in general, you can look at the artist(s) and know if it's a "New Rock" show.  Allman Brothers, Alice Cooper, Santana?  NOT "New Rock."  Pretenders?  Could be either show.  Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis?  "New Rock."

Another change on this one is NO ANNOUNCER.  Steve Downes, J.J. Jackson, and Charlie Kendall are not only missing, but there's also nothing to identify the show as a Westwood One show on this first CD (we're missing the second CD).

That's another problem with these "two artist" In Concert shows; the EBAY vendors split them up and sell them separately, and the cue sheet usually goes with one disc but not the other.  What I've been trying to do is document as completely as possible, and then let Our Beloved Audience decide how you want to divvy up the music.  This one is a single disc, the second disc is missing.  And somewhere there's a Peter Murphy show without a cue sheet.

The Posies were great, and not so "alternative" that they couldn't have been played on KFOG's "adult alternative" playlist.  Ringo Starr covered "Golden Blunders," for example.

We've got 300 dpi scans of the disc labels but are missing the cue sheet and affidavit.  I included print ads for the show, and a review of the concert from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  The headline was "Hagar Outdoes Himself In Spectacular Show."

The show was filmed for later broadcast by MTV.

....and that, for now, wraps up our review of the NBC The Source shows.  We've tracked down and digitized 64 concert shows, and packed as much exciting documentation into each one that we could find.  We think there are about thirty five more concerts out there, but at least two of those were officially released, and another eight are repeats of other shows.  That knocks it down to twenty-five on our "high priority" BOLO.

Our next project is to tackle the Super Groups In Concert shows and
see if we can get a list of all the shows issued on vinyl, but also try and track down the shows that were only distributed by satellite broadcast.

While host Rona Elliot does not mention a date, I was able to work my way back in time through the Boston Globe, and found the most recent appearance by the Jon Butcher Axis at the Channel was February 25, 1984. I tossed in a couple of articles just for the heck of it.

On the advertising front, we've got Rick Mears for Pennzoil.  Wiki says, "He is one of four men to win the Indianapolis 500 four times (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991) and is the current record-holder for pole positions in the race with six (1979, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991). Mears is also a three-time Indycar series/World Series champion (1979, 1981 and 1982)."

From the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection
Brought to you by the Collective for Live Music.

Both nights were taped for an HBO program, with Saturday night being the night of the taping for the broadcast...so it's likely this is October 8 (Saturday).  I found an ad for the simulcast, which took place in March.

The Berkeley Gazette wrote, "While at first I thought Colin Hay kept erring in his references to the locale as "San Francisco," it later became clear he was only goading the audience into extracting an apology from him as a cute introduction for "It's A Mistake.  The joke seemed lost on the crowd."

I'll add that the "Thank you very much, San Francisco" might be mildly annoying in the East Bay, but there's not a huge rivalry across the Bay. Yes, professional sports means people lined up behind San Francisco's Giants and 49ers or Oakland's A's and Raiders, but this was in Berkeley.  The UC Berkeley campus is across the street from the Greek Theatre, and the students come from all over the world.

And from the East Bay perspective of 2025, if we really cared the A's wouldn't be in Sacramento, the Raiders in Las Vegas, and the Warriors in San Francisco.

"It's A Mistake" is not on the cue sheet and contains (or is followed by) a drum solo.

Paul Hogan's "G'day" commercials came out in 1984, so it was a high-profile year for Australia here in America.

Opening act was Mental As Anything (also from Australia)

At one point Colin Hay mentions Diana Ross, who was playing in Oakland a week later.

Comsat Angels - Live Rotterdam 1983

Originally posted March 27, 2009 & June 9 , 2016

Comsat Angels - Live Rotterdam Arena
October 22, 1983,
Rotterdam, Holland
FM Source @192

“Erroneously regarded as a synth pop band — and, every now and then — as a band that peaked with a song placed in a scene of [the film] ‘Real Genius’, the Comsat Angels were one of the finest bands of the post-punk/new wave era. Often as moody if less dramatic than Joy Division, their first and best albums — 1980’s ‘Waiting for a Miracle’;, 1981’s ‘Sleep No More’, and 1982’s ‘Fiction’ — featured abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache. The albums were almost unrelentingly sullen, but they were always transfixing. The band then fell prey to various commercial pressures for several years. In the ’90s they resurfaced with a pair of powerful albums that resembled logical extensions of their earliest work, and then they vanished again.”

We continue with our exhaustive documentation of the NBC The Source shows.  We're up to 55 shows now, with more to come!

In researching this release, I found there is also Paul Young – In Concert-324, BBC Transcription Services – CN 4334/S

Discogs says this was recorded Dec. 24, 1983, the same as NBC The Source NBC 84-17, but with a different set list.

The BBC show has three unique songs:

I Close My Eyes (And Count To Ten)
Love Of The Common People
Oh Women

The NBC Source show has two unique songs:
Ku Ku Karama
Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)

Setlist.fm has an entry for Dec. 22 and 23, 1983, but no set list for Dec. 24.  There are newspaper listings that confirm a December 24 broadcast at 10:00 PM on the Old Grey Whistle test as a simultaneous broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and BBC-2, so there was definitely a show on the 24th.

UB40 was at the Ritz on July 7 and July 8, 1983.  I'm not sure from which date this was sourced.

This one comes from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.
Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music.

This wraps up the solo Paul Rodgers music on Westwood One.  If you add this to the Troubadour shows, you have everything you need. There are still appearances with The Firm and Ronnie Lane's ARMS concert to track down and digitize from the original vinyl, however.

This was the only 2-cd version of a show sourced from the Grove of Anaheim.  After this, the concert was edited down by dropping songs so that it could fit onto a single disc.  The truncated set list was repeated as 04-34 and 08-04.

The Grove of Anaheim

Of note... Rodgers tosses in some Beatles quotes on Rock & Roll Fantasy.
On the advertising front, we have Carrot Top...and Ray Lewis (from the Baltimore Ravens, and yes, I had to look him up).

Paul Rodgers - four Westwood One shows with tracks from the Troubadour Nov. 12, 1993

Paul Rodgers
Recorded at:
The Troubadour
West Hollywood, CA ("Los Angeles")
November 12, 1993

Paul Rodgers released Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute To Muddy Waters in the spring of 1993. During the supporting tour he began dropping in a few Jimi Hendrix covers to his set, which received a great response from the audience, leading to more Hendrix songs added to the set list.  In response to the demand, a five song EP "The Hendrix Set" was released that July.

Paul Rodgers played two sets at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California on Friday, November 12, 1993.  Ads ran in the LA Weekly advertising "1st Show 8pm Featuring MUDDY WATERS BLUES" and "2nd show 10pm featuring THE JIMI HENDRIX SET."

Westwood One recorded both sets.  Portions of the show were syndicated as four different Westwood One shows.

In order of the original air dates, the shows are:

Westwood One Superstar Concert 94-05

Westwood One In Concert 94-34

Westwood One Superstar Concert 97-02 (split with Bad Company)

Westwood One Superstar Concert 98-24 (split with the Firm)

The easy way for Westwood One to make a show like this would be to pick the best tracks from each set, mix and master them, and then swap in new announcements and commercials for each new syndication. Do the work once, then collect the fees from the national advertisers without doing additional work.

If you listen and compare the tracks, they didn't do that with all of the songs. Four songs are two different takes, presumably one from the first set and the other from the second set. I say "presumably" because Westwood One has a history of occasionally dropping in songs from other venues. That may have happened on these shows, as we have "Foxy Lady" in three different versions  .
(see below, we now think it's two versions)

The following is my assessment of the differences I hear between the shows.  I'm using the first broadcast of the Troubadour tracks on Superstar Concert 94-05 as the baseline.  If a song is repeated later, it's marked as "Version 2."
Westwood One In Concert #94-34 has a similar set list to 94-05, dropping "Muddy Water Blues" adding "Good Morning Little School Girl" and "She's Alright." However, when you compare the tracks, it has different versions of Can't Get Enough, Foxy Lady, The Hunter, and Wishing Well.  They're not the same performances.

Superstar Concert 97-02 is almost all Bad Company...but the 1995 version of Bad Company WITHOUT Paul Rodgers.  At the end, two Paul Rodgers songs from the Troubadour are tacked on. The entire presentation is a bit weird... "Here's Bad Company without Paul Rodgers, and to show you what's missing, here's Paul Rodgers doing two songs never recorded by Bad Company."

Superstar Concert 98-24 adds a third version of Foxy Lady.  My understanding is there were two sets at the Troubadour. Artists often repeat songs when they play two shows in a single evening at a venue, but they don't usually play a song twice in either set.  The existence of three versions all claimed to be from the same Troubadour show strikes me as implausible, so it's possible one of the versions is not from the Troubadour.

Here's notes on the differences I hear when I compared the songs on Superstar Concert 94-04, In Concert 94-34, Superstar Concerts 97-02 and 98-24.

All Right Now - same

Bad Company - This one is tough to figure out. The whistling at the start seems different enough that I originally marked this as having two versions, but at .13 you hear someone go "woo woo woo," and at .26 there's a loud whistle.. on both versions. So, maybe a slight difference in the mix, but the same basic track?  For now I'm leaving this as a single version.  What do you think?

Can't Get Enough - While both versions have Rodgers counting off "one two three four, Version 1 has some noodling around on the drums at the start, and Version 2 has the drummer clicking the drum sticks together during the count off.

Fire - same
Fire and Water - same

Foxy Lady - Version 1 no spoken intro. Version 2 has a spoken intro of "we'll leave you with this one..."  Version 3 spoken intro is "this is called..."

We have a mystery here.  With two sets played at the Troubadour, how do we get three different versions of "Foxy Lady?"   (UPDATED, see below!)

Little Wing - same
Louisiana Blues - same
Mr. Big - same

Muddy Water Blues - Version 1 does not have a spoken intro and has a faster count-in. Version 2 has a spoken intro and a slower count-in.

Purple Haze - same
Shooting Star - same

Stone Free, I Feel Free - Version 2 has a "whoop" and a shout of "Rock me baby" not on Version 1.
The Hunter -  Version 1 introduces Slash as guest guitarist, Version 2 has a count-in.

Wishing Well - Version 1 has a count-in of "3-4"  Version 2 counts in the start as "1-2-3-4."

WE HAVE A WINNER!  Every so often one of Our Beloved Audience goes above and beyond the call of downloading duty and SOLVES A MYSTERY for us, and we want to change their lives forever by awarding them the fabulous Voodoo Wagon NO PRIZE!  Yes, it's priceless!  Women worship and men admire you when you mention that you've got one of these at home!

I will be updating all of the text files to reflect this incredible breakthrough, but for now, Mr. Sifter's discovery has been promoted out of the comments and into the post.  And here, sir, is your reward:

"So after a little research, I determined there's only two "Foxy Lady" performances, you can tell 1 and 2 are the same because a guy who's seen Wayne's World too many times shouts "Comin' to get ya" during the pause/breakdown two minutes in. They're just mixed a bit differently. The other 5 songs definitely are different performances (notable is that The Hunter V2 is Slash-free). Interesting that they mixed this show twice, the first show is a different and more dynamic (and less bright) mix than later incarnations."  -- Mr Sifter

Eric Burdon & Tovarich - Live at the Whiskey 1971

Eric Burdon & Tovarich

Live at the Whiskey 1971

Eric Burdon, the former Animals frontman in 1971, created a very short-lived band called Tovarich, and played with the band in October 11, 1971 at the famous Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles.

Great gig with fantastic musicians (George Suranovich & John Sterling particularly). Was a shame that this lineup of the band only existed for a few months, but luck is that it remained a relatively good quality recording for posterity.

George then played briefly with the Blues Image before joining the Eric Burdon Band. While working on the album "Guilty", George met John Sterling (guitar) and Kim Kesterson (bass). Along with Kevin Kelly (keyboards), they formed Tovarich (Russian for "Comrades"). Besides backing Burdon and blues/jazz vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon, they became a popular attraction on the L.A. club circuit and recorded an album of their own (unreleased). They later recorded a second album with Burdon, "Stop!", as well as "Black & White Blues" by Burdon and Witherspoon. That album, released only in Europe, included George's composition "Wicked Wicked Man"(which was recently resurrected by Burdon as the title track of one of his own albums). Tovarich also provided the soundtrack to the movie "Revenge of the Cheerleaders".

Drums: George Suranovich
Bass: Kim Kesterson

Announcer John McGhan does not say where this was recorded.  There are two versions up on Discogs, one attributing it the Orpheum, Boston May 7, 1981 and the second to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, USA on May 2, 1981.

So, which is it?

The Wiki for the live "Finyl Vinyl" album mentions "The song "Can't Happen Here" has wrong location and date in the booklet. It was actually recorded at "The Orpheum Theatre" in Boston, MA, USA on May 7, 1981."

I checked the album cover, and it attributes "Can't Happen Here" to Uniondale 1981.  I compared the songs, and yes, they're the same recording.  This explains the sour
ce of the two divergent attributions on Discogs.

If the Wiki is correct, this is Boston, not Uniondale.

There are several bootleg version of the Boston show, and an official release in 2016 as "Boston 1981."  That's still in print. As there's an official release, that settles it, this is the Orpheum, Boston, May 7, 1981.

Obviously, if you like this, go buy the official version.  The vinyl on this was in decent shape, but four or five minutes of side two were a bit worn on "Catch The Rainbow" so there's a touch of surface noise.

This one is a 3 LP, 5-sided set, with the sixth side left blank.

Brought to you by the Collective For Live Music.

You get the affidavit!  Scans of all six disc labels!  The cue sheet!

There's a vintage concert review, and a story about the band and tour.  The set list is split between the 60's/early 70's hits and the early 80's revived band's songs.

As is often the case, the smaller municipality where the concert actually took place is subsumed in the larger city's name.

On the advertising front, we get the husband-and-wife comedy duo of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, doing ads for Blue Nun Wine.

From Wikipedia:
During the 1970s in the U.S., a series of radio adverts promoting the wine were produced, featuring Stiller and Meara. Their ads were so effective, they boosted sales by 500%.

On The Beatles song "Long, Long, Long" off the White Album, rattling noises by a Blue Nun wine bottle are heard as a result of a bottle's resting on top of a Leslie speaker, which began to vibrate when Paul McCartney played a certain note on the Hammond organ. It is accompanied by a Ringo Starr drum roll.

Steve Jones, guitarist of the Sex Pistols, stated in his autobiography Lonely Boy that he drank at least two whole bottles of Blue Nun before the band's infamous Thames Television interview with host Bill Grundy dated 1 December 1976.
