Brian Setzer - Bimbo's 1994 and 1998

I digitized this from my master cassette of the Brian Setzer Orchestra live in 1994 at Bimbo's, and rounded out the second disc with a short five song promotional set from the same venue in 1998.
The sound quality is excellent; a clear, clean FM signal. If you like Setzer's big band work, you're likely to love this broadcast.

Stand-out tracks include a new arrangement of "Stray Cat Strut," a great extended version of "Route 66," and a riotous reading of "Brand New Cadillac." One of my personal favorites!

While two of the 1994 songs are repeated in the 1998 set, the arrangement of one of them ("Rock This Town") is significantly different than the 1994 version.

John Cougar Mellencamp FM Show 1984

Instead of trotting out the usual “hits plus new songs” set list, Mellencamp takes a tour through his record collection and opens up with four cover songs. His taste is more eclectic than you’d expect. He starts things off with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Yes, the Elvis Presley song…. but he’s doing a note-for-note clone of John Cale’s ominous arrangement from the Slow Dazzle album.

Next up is a pretty standard cover of the Animals’ “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (but he beats Elvis Costello’s cover of the same song by a good two years), followed by a quick run through the Left Banke’s 1966 baroque-pop hit, “Pretty Ballerina.” He finishes up with Lee Dorsey’s “Ya Ya.”

Then he gets down to what you’d expect: songs from John Cougar, Nothing Matters and What If It Did, and American Fool. But he’s not done with showing off his good taste yet: at the end, he pulls out a cover of Richard Thompson’s “Shoot Out The Lights,” and calls him “one of the best songwriters writin’ songs today….” John Mellencamp was taking valuable air time on a nationally syndicated radio show to promote Richard Thompson. Pretty cool...

So this is something a bit different; you get five cover songs, none of which were ever officially released. I also did a painstaking manual removal of each click and pop, so this is about as perfect as this show will ever get. I included scans of the disc label, affidavit, cue sheet, and front cover.

Richard Thompson - Sausalito Arts Festival 1994

One hour and forty minutes of Richard Thompson from a mid 90s radio broadcast. If you don't know him, he's an amazingly fast-picking guitarist with a mordant view of the human condition.

But I need some help in identifying two instrumentals that are tacked on to the end of “Don’t Sit On My Jimmy Shand’s.” I think the first instrumental is Shand’s signature tune, “The Bluebell Polka,” (and I've titled it as such….). But the next instrumental tune? I have not a clue. Can anyone confirm that the first song is indeed “The Bluebell Polka,” and provide a title for the unknown second song?

The sound? It’s excellent. There's a bit more "audience ambience" than is typical of most KFOG shows because the venue was outdoors, but it sounds great.

This one plays like a “Greatest Hits Live” set. Foreigner put 16 hits on the American Top 40, and 13 of them are represented here. So….13 out of 14 of these were Top 40 hits. Other than that….not much to say. You know if you like ‘em or not. If you do, you’ll probably like this. I included a scan of the cue sheet. Foreigner - Live at Budokan - 1989 - Westwood One Superstar Concert Series - Show #92-41, sourced directly from 2-cd set, with the commercials edited out.

For broadcast the weekend of October 10, 1992
