The CD booklet claimed that this is the original first WLIR-FM recording from 1973.

Our currently Yojimbo version is apparently the re-broadcast from WXRT with a
different radio announcer. The overall sound quality on this boot is better than
on Yojimbo's version, also Yoijimbo's version has much more FM static
noises here and there.

Welcome to our latest chapter of "debunking the Internet."

This is wrong.

If you run a search, you can find June 10th listed as the date of this show.  Last.fm, Spotify, Liveone.com, and dozens of other sites say it's June 10, 1995. The correct date is October 6, 1995. This error comes from the difference in how America records dates as compared to the rest of the world. In American English, it's MM/DD/YYYY.  In Europe and British English, they use DD/MM/YYYY. So...October 6, 1995 is 10/06/1995 here, but 10/06/1995 means June 10, 1995 in the countries producing the "gray market" CDs.

The announcer, Bob Coburn, says, "...soon, we'll be taking you to the stage at Coleman Coliseum, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for a great concert performance from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, recorded during the last week of their 1995 North American tour, the tour that ended just last month.

That establishes the concert took place in the month before the broadcast date's month. The show is announced as "the Album Network's Holiday Concert Special" and "Thanksgiving Special."  There's no cue sheet included, but the date printed on the cassettes is 11/29/95, which was the last Wednesday of November. "Just last month" would be October 1995.

I've included a newspaper clipping that says, "Petty will perform Friday, Oct. 6 at 8:30 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum."

The show opens with a half hour special about the release of the PLAYBACK boxed set, and features Bob Coburn interviewing producer George Drakoulias.

This is a pre-FM copy from cassettes. Presumably, there's also a version with commercials.  I've seen a reel-to-reel copy on Ebay, which may have had the advertising included.  I suspect this "no commercials" cassette copy was produced as a promotional item.

The "brought to you by" at the end of the show lists 1-800 Music Now, Discover Card, Fox TV, Burst Gum, and Radio Shack as the sponsors.

Some things come and go, some things stay the same.  1-800-Music Now had you call a number on your touchtone phone, type in an artist's name, listen to samples over the phone line, and then order the CD using a credit card.  It lasted a little over a year.  Wiki says, "The promotion totaled about $40 million (at the time, advertisements for the service were quite regularly played on MTV and advertised heavily as part of The Simpsons Homerpalooza episode); meanwhile, its top-selling CD sold only 400 copies."

On the other hand, Fox Televisions' The Simpsons is still on television, twenty-nine years later.

Bob Coburn is the host.  For many years he was the voice of ROCKLINE, also deejayed on Los Angeles KLOS-FM.

The credits are given over Wilson Pickett's "She's Lookin' Good," which is a smokin' hot slab of soul.  It reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

First of all, I don't see a circulating copy of a Dan Hicks Record Plant show, so this may be something unique.  Or not.  I'm hoping a Hicks fan will step up and leave a comment as to what the heck this really is.

There's a story behind this tape.  Usually, I traded cassettes by mail.  A Goldmine ad had a local address and I met up with the trader in person.  My son was about six months old, and I recall having to hold him in my arms while negotiating the trades.  

Diapers were more important than cassettes, and this show was filed and forgotten. My son's 32 now, so it's about time to dig into these boxes.

The show was listed on the j-card as "The Troubadour, Summer 1971." A few minutes into it, Hicks mentions they're at the Record Plant, so it's clearly NOT the Troubadour.  I thought it might be a KSAN show from the Record Plant in Sausalito, but Hicks also mentions "We came all the way down from Marin County" just before Shorty Falls In Love.  Sausalito's in Marin County, so that theory was disproved.

The deejay on the Outro says, "...that was recorded down in Los Angeles about two months ago, I believe, at a local recording studio, and then they ran the lines right through KPPC, our sister station down in Los Angeles..."

KSAN was not a sister station of KPPC.  The S.F. sister station was KMPX.  So that's likely the source of the show.

In June 1972, KMPX dropped rock and switched to a big band/nostalgia format, so the 1971 date sounds reasonable. 

Supposedly a first generation...and it sounds like it.

There's some hiss, a bit of radio static here and there, which I cleaned up.  It's mono, not stereo.  Hicks refers to the radio audience as ""F.M.ers," so I'm sure this is FM, not AM.

On the other side of the tape, the show was repeated, in the same quality, but without the deejay, and missing the last song, listed as "Record Plant, L.A. CA 1971."  The radio static is in the same places, so while it may from a different chain of tape copies, it's the same show, so there's no reason to include it.

There were also a few songs listed as "Family Dog S.F. CA 12/20/70" on the tape.

I can find no record of a show on that date.  In late 1970, the Family Dog organization stopped putting on shows at the venue on the Great Highway.  Several shows occurred but the really ought to be listed as "660 Great Highway" rather than Family Dog.

A wonderful tape from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection!  This is our second Beru Review tape here on the V-Wagon.

The first thing I want to note isn't the music, but the commercials.  It's unusual for a commercial break to be present in a live broadcast.  Bands don't enter and exit the stage in fixed 30 or 60 second increments.  You get a lot of commercials on the syndicated shows... or the "in studio shows," but these "live from a local nightclub" broadcasts don't usually have a commercial break.

In this show, they squeeze in a commercial before the encore, and then a pair of ads before the "outro."  The odd thing about the first commercial is that it's for a DIFFERENT nightclub than the broadcast.  Usually advertisers don't want their competition mentioned when they sponsor an event. It is for a Beru Review concert, so maybe that accounts for overriding the prohibition of competitive placement.

The other is that this is a great show from three years earlier than our other Beru Review broadcast.

Another from the fantastic, fabulous, and fun Sam Elliot's Mustache collection comes a batch of Be Bop Deluxe.  My understanding is that this is a pre-FM recorded off the radio reel to reel. 

This show was first broadcast on BBC Radio 1's Sight And Sound In Concert on February 4, 1978.  The Drastic Plastic tour commenced on February 5, 1978, at Coventry Theatre and included 19 UK dates, so the original British broadcast of this was the day before they launched the tour.
In the United rock n' roll States of America, this show turned up on a BBC Rock Hour in the spring of 1978.

We're missing the tape box for this show, and there is no broadcast date on the cue sheet.  
From 1976 through 1979, shows were sequentially numbered for each year, and then started over for the new year.  For example...BBC Rock Hour #8 can be Barclay James Harvest...or Melanie/Don MClean...or Robin Trower.  

While we're missing the U.S.broadcast date, we can work backwards from the following year's show.  BBC Rock Hour #18 for 1979 was broadcast on April 20, 1979 (Friday).  Using the 1979 information as a guide, it's likely this was broadcast on April 21, 1978 (Friday) in the USA.

This was officially released on At The BBC 1974-1978, a 3cd set issued in 2013.  It appears to be out of print, but copies are available from the usual online vendors. So if you like this, go track down the out-of-print set.

Another from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection.  Flac files of wavs, plus three different ads confirming the date of the show as August 28, plus some local press coverage.

This one's a WMMR-FM broadcast that was also used by King Biscuit Flower Hour.  The October 19, 1986 King Biscuit (Show #650) was split between The Outfield (Tyler, Texas) and John Eddie (Philadelphia).

The John Eddie songs used by KBFH were Stranded, Waste Me, Jungle Boy, and Pretty Little Rebel.  I don't have a copy of the KBFH to compare, but it's likely from this show.  Concert Vault has this same show in streaming audio, with three additional songs at the end (When I Want A Kiss, Justine, and Maggie Mae). They have the date of the show as August 26, 1986, which is wrong (but not wrong enough for me to get our pal Dr. Strange to chastise them).  The hand-written date on Sam's cassette is the 28th, and the ads confirm the date as correct.

Sam's tape cuts off after Suffragette City.  Sam's not sure if he ran out of tape, or if the original broadcast ended after the first encore.  It was not unusual for a radio station to have committed specific hours to a program and to end live shows before they came back for a second (or third) encore, so it may be that they didn't broadcast the entire show.

The Wolfgang's version has Pretty Little Rebel listed as Medley, because at the end of the song Eddie adds bits of Bennie & the Jets, Takin' Care of Business, and Little Willie.

At the time, several songs were unreleased: All Dolled Up, I Want You Back, Hard Cold Truth, Wonderful Life and Girl Trouble. 

In a search on Discogs, I found that Wonderful Life eventually came out on Guy Walks Into A Bar...John Eddie Live (2001).

I also found three "unauthorized recordings" on a label named HemiTS Releasing. They appear be a bootleg label releasing radio broadcasts and needle-drops of less well-known artists, including Gary U.S. Bonds, B.E. Taylor Group, Joey G. & the Brick Alley Band, Steve Smith and the Nakeds, Donny Iris, Gravel, Norman Nardini & the Tigers, the Gunnslingers.

They released this Trocadero concert as HemiTS Releasing TS-0006 "Live In Concert 1986" 2017, with the full show.  The source is probably from Wolfgang's Concert Vault as it has the extra songs.
