Ornette Coleman was one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement of the 1960s. Coleman's timbre is easily recognized. His keening, crying sound draws heavily on blues music. Ornette Coleman was the 16th recipient of the Miles Davis Award, created for the 15th anniversary of The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 1994. His album Sound Grammar received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for music.
This recording was made when Ornette was just 35 and in the midst of his 'free jazz' period. To me this is as unlistenable now as it was 30 years ago when I first heard this on reel to reel. I know that may not be the fashionable thing to say but I know there is at least one person who visits that will dig this.
