Another cassette I got in trade back in the 1980s. This one had very little information...just the venue, city, and "1986" on it. The show introduction identifies the show as "New Country."
I found a listing in the Sunday March 2nd Tennessean Sun saying "New Country" will be production for two shows daily at the Cannery...and the taping for Tuesday was for Steve Earle. Tuesday was March 4, 1986.
Earle mentions that the songs are from his new album, and his first LP was released March 5, 1986. He also mentions that "Hillbilly Highway" is the first single off the album, and that song was released on March 22, 1986.
If this was recorded on the 4th, that has him speaking as if the record was already out...but I then found broadcast dates from June 29 to July 1. So it makes sense; he's recording this just before the release of the LP but knows it won't be broadcast until three months later. If you're eager for early Earle, ease on your earphones and enjoy.
The show was New Country, on the Nashville Network.
Sound quality is excellent. I don't have documentation as to generation, but I believe this is a first generation right off of a stereo video tape of the television show.
About the venue: The internet says, "Cannery Hall’s building was originally built as a flour mill for Liberty Self-Rising Flour in 1883. In the 1930s, the building was home to the Fletcher Coffee Company who milled coffee there. In the 1950s, Dale Foods Company began processing their jams, jellies, mustards, and peanut butter there until the mid-1970s. In 1981, The Cannery began its life as a music venue when the Dale family converted the building into an 18,000 square foot country style restaurant with a stage. In the early 80s, the Dale family let promoters book live bands in the space at night. By day, the club served as a stage for artists like Reba McEntire, George Strait, Patty Loveless and Tammy Wynette. At night, it was the place to catch some of the hottest rock and alternative touring acts. In 1984, The Nashville Network’s “New Country” concert series filmed at The Cannery regularly. "
