The first big hometown gig for the legendary Stone Roses, at the also legendary Hacienda Club in Manchester. The line-up, the songs, and the shit-hot band, they're all present and correct in this concert bootleg.

Comprising mainly of tracks from their iconic debut album, the show fairly pings along as Reni, Mani, John and Ian are pretty much on the top of their game. "Sally Cinnamon," later released by someone unscrupulous while court battles were raging between band and label, is a joy to hear, as are "Here It Comes" and "Suger Spun Sister." I really can't 'big-up' this bootleg enough, just take it and see for yourself.

Assembling in 1968, the Art Ensemble of Chicago came out of the fertile Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM), a non-profit group that nurtured the avant garde roots of the Chicago jazz scene. Dedicated to fusing jazz with other musical traditions from America, Europe, Africa and Asia, the group's five members - saxophonists Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman, trumpeter Lester Bowie, bassist Malachi Favors and drummer Don Moye - have remained constant since 1971.

This particular live concert captures the period when the group signed with the Japanese label, Disk Union in the mid-‘80s. The concert coincided with the release of Ancient to the Future, Dreaming of the Masters Vol I (1987), a series of homages that the group made with their own influences. As Jarman noted: "It's meaningless to repeat what one of the masters has done, note for note. We are not as good as the master was, simply by repeating his notes. We need to play our own music and incorporate the master's ideas, but show they're an influence, not an affliction." Here, they perform a treatment of Albert Ayler's Ghosts but the raw desperate energy is rendered with a sweeter, fuller sense of melody without compromising Ayler's passion. They end with Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry where Lester Bowie's ethereal trumpet keeps understating the melody thus allowing your imagination to fill in the gaps. The question came up as several top vintage-guitar dealers sat at a picnic table backstage at a Rolling Stones concert in Arizona on a December day in 1981. They were guests of Keith Richards' guitar tech, Alan Rogan, who, along with keeping Richards' guitars in tune, was charged with obtaining more rare ones for his collection. As with other guitar-driven bands, a Stones tour was like a huge vacuum cleaner sucking up America's rare instruments, and these dealers were the bristles.

Neko made her name when she sang several songs on the New Pornographers album Mass Romantic before going solo, firstly with her band Her Boyfriends, before perhaps gaining a little more confidence and continuing comeletely under her own name. Though the Pornographers were an indie-pop style group, formed more to allow each member to gain a little from playing with each other more than anything, her own music is much more country than anything else. 2006 brought us her album Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, and with it many, many plaudits for her songwriting style. Anyway...this is rather younger than that as you've noticed, though I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway.
