Katrina and the Waves / Depeche Mode - Westwood One In Concert 85-17

Westwood One In Concert 85-17
aired on July 29 - August 4, 1985
Katrina and the Waves
Palace, Hollywood, CA

Depeche Mode
Unknown Venue
Flac files of wavs. NO CUE SHEET.

Okay, gang,  this one has NO cue sheet with it, so we're guessing as to the broadcast date. I found a reference on the Internet in Billboard magazine for July 27, 1985 that lists an In Concert show for Katrina and the Waves for the broadcast week of July 29 to August 4, 1985, so that's a VERY LIKELY broadcast window.  The recording date would have been earlier in 1985. Note that Depeche Mode is NOT listed in Billboard as being part of show.

Here's what Wikipedia says about the venue during the time this show was recorded:

"Avalon (or Avalon Hollywood) is a historic nightclub in Hollywood, California, located near the intersection of Hollywood and Vine, at 1735 N. Vine Street. It has previously been known as The Hollywood Playhouse, The WPA Federal Theatre, El Capitan Theatre, The Jerry Lewis Theatre, The Hollywood Palace and The Palace. It has a capacity of 1,500, and is located across the street from Capitol Records Building.

In 1978, ABC sold the theatre to private businessman Dennis Lidtke, who restored it and reopened it four years later with an abridged name, The Palace. The theater's audience seating area was removed. The audience raked floor was leveled to flush (same level) out from the lobby entrance area to the stage apron. Bands were located on the stage area. A double staircase was installed against the auditoriums back wall with an open arch which connected to the lobby staircase first landing, for balcony access, where tables and seating were arranged for balcony viewing of the band and dance floor below. One early production using the revamped facility was the 1983 Sheena Easton HBO concert special, Sheena Easton Live at the Palace, Hollywood. It was the venue for the performance portion of Bruce Willis' ACE nominated HBO special "The Return of Bruno," which was written and produced by Paul Flattery and directed by Jim Yukich.

Avalon (as The Palace) is featured prominently in the film Against All Odds.

The punk band Ramones played their 2263rd and final show here on August 6, 1996. It was recorded for billboard live for the album We're Outta Here!. The building has hosted the American Music Awards."

Here's a bit of rock and roll geography:  The Palace was right across the street from the Capitol Records Building, which was designed to look like a stack of records on a turntable.

Los Lobos / Hibiya Yagai Ongakudo, Tokyo, Japan - April 17, 1988

Okay, Voodoo Wagon gang, here's another multi-generation tape I got in a tape trade through Goldmine magazine back in the '80's.  It is LIKELY that my copy is first generation from a master of the original broadcast, but I don't know for sure.  I got this in a trade from a great guy in Tokyo that sent me a lot of great tapes, so it is very likely his cassette was a master of the original broadcast.  Anyway...it's sourced from a great sounding tape, and if you like Los Lobos, you're very likely going to love it.

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Rindge, NH.1972

Mahavishnu Orchestra
Franklin Pierce College
February 24, 1973
Rindge, NH.
Soundboard @320

Set List:
01. Meeting of the Spirits 12:02
02. Open Country Joy 8:57
03. Hope / Awakening 19:42
04. Miles Beyond 11:14

Billy Cobham - drums
Jerry Goodman - violin
Jan Hammer - keyboards
Rick Laird - bass
John McLaughlin - guitar

**Original Notes**

The initial classic lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra lasted less than three years and only released two studio albums and one live recording during this era, but these recordings had a profound effect, redefining the jazz/rock fusion movement. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, the group created music that was often intricate and complex, performed by musicians whose virtuosity thrilled audiences, musicians, and critics alike.

By early 1973, the Mahavishnu Orchestra had firmly established their reputation and with little over a year of live performances behind them, they had become one of the most exciting bands on the planet. This partial February 1973 performance captures the group following the release of Birds of Fire and several months before they recorded the live album, Between Nothingness and Eternity. Recorded at Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire, this is yet another stellar example of the band's blazing energy and fluid virtuosity. Now an established headliner, the Mahavishnu Orchestra had more time onstage and they seized that opportunity to explore in greater depth. This set captures the group as they were diversifying the onstage repertoire and extending their improvisational approach.

The performance begins with the pairing of the Inner Mounting Flame's leadoff track, "Meeting Of The Spirits," with "Open Country Joy" from Birds Of Fire. While both remain aligned with the album arrangements, here they feature extended solos, often explosive and pummeling in their ferocity. Open Country Joy," a strutting, gradually intensifying urban blues is perhaps the least complex composition the classic lineup ever played, vacillating between a laidback county feel and frenzied rocking power.

Although brief, "Hope" unfolds in an elegant, magisterial way, before Cobham suddenly blasts off into "Awakening." This too has moments of frightening intensity and the telepathy between these musicians is functioning at an astounding level. Hammer takes an impressive solo here, simultaneously playing bluesy Fender Rhodes with gurgling mini-moog embellishments. It eventually becomes a duel between McLaughlin and Cobham, and this is unison playing at its most astonishing. McLaughlin doesn't let up for a second, interjecting an endless barrage of ideas, while Cobham often does more with a hi-hat and snare drum than most drummers are capable of with an entire kit.

The recording concludes with McLaughlin's tribute to Miles Davis, "Miles Beyond," with the group again displaying breathtaking improvisational abilities within a funkier context. Dominated by Hammer, who offers a barrage of demented sounds from his keyboards, this also features Jerry Goodman propelling the basic groove with McLaughlin, Laird, and Cobham providing rhythmic punctuations and accents.

Every concert from this era of Mahavishnu Orchestra is astonishing to some degree and this is no exception, featuring the original lineup at the pinnacle of their powers.

A bit about Keystone Palo Alto:

The building housed three different supermarkets and a short-lived German restaurant before becoming a night club named Sophie's.   The Jerry Garcia Band recorded Garcia Live Volume Seven at Sophie's in 1976. In 1977, it became Keystone Palo Alto, joining the already existing Keystone Berkeley and The Stone (San Francisco, formerly Keystone Korner).

In '87-'89 the building became the Vortex, a modern dance club, but returned to rock acts under the name The Edge from 1989 through 2000.  The last incarnation of the building saw it transform into Club Illusions, a supper club.

Here's an aerial shot of the old Keystone building (looks a lot like a 1960s supermarket, doesn't it?)

The building was torn down in October of 2013 and replaced with this:

Well...what a way to start a morning.  I always thought these guys were one of the finest pop music musicians going. But on an optimistic note, Alabama may have (at least for a moment) come out of the dark ages.  I cannot stress enough how important it is for all of you reading this to vote when called upon. If you are not registered, in the time it takes to download this show you could be at your county clerks office making sure America's nightmare ends soon. Don't let any BULLSHIT stop you. With all the garbage about to come on us due to Net Neutrality who knows what's gonna happen to all of YOUR FAVORITE BLOGS. Oh yes and to quote Mr. Hendrix again, "It would sound better if you stand up for your country and your beliefs and start singing....and if you don't FUCK YOU"  See scans.

The live perforances from the movie "This Is Spinal Tap" were filmed at Perkin's Palace.

I've included a scan of the cue sheet, disc label, and the affidavit of performance. Flac files of wavs!

The vinyl on this one was rough; there were a lot of small "static" pops that were too numerous to remove entirely...but I got it all down to pretty good transfer after a lot of hard work. I hope you like it!

Our old friend Steve Downes (the voice of Master Chief, from the video game "Halo")
is once again the Westwood One announcer.

There's a great article about Perkin's Palace at:
https://web.archive.org/web/20131010123533/http://hometown-pasadena.com/history/remembering-pasadena%E2%80%99s-palace-of-rock/11578

Westwood One premiered their Westwood One In Concert series in April of 1981, with a show #81-1, pairing Chuck Berry and George Thorogood, sourced from two separate concert recordings.

The numbering on the In Concert shows is very straight forward, it's a two digit code indicating the year, followed by an ascending count of the number of shows. 81-1, 81-2, 81-3...etc. It looks like they did about 12 shows that first year, but by the mid-80s they were doing a show per week.  This show from 1982 is numbered 26 and is from the last weekend of the year, so it looks like In Concert was running a show every two weeks in their second year.

"Top 40" in your town wasn't the same as in my town.  There was the NATIONAL USA Top 40, but that's not what we heard...we heard what was on the local radio, and that may have been very different.

For example... consider Jerry Jeff Walker. He never had a Top 40 hit.  But he was a hit in certain markets.

I direct your attention to the wonderful ARSA website at http://las-solanas.com/arsa/

This great site compiles LOCAL charts of hundreds of radio stations.  Do you remember those little radio surveys distributed by every radio station at your record store back in the 60's and 70's?  Well, this site compiles them into a database.

To see all the data, you have to register but go ahead and do it...they don't send you a bunch of SPAM if you sign up.

Now, the data isn't perfect, they only track what's been uploaded, so there are gaps, and those surveys fell out of style so the data is better for the 60's and 70's isn't much use after that.

For a guy like Jerry Jeff Walker...with NO Top 40 Billboard Hits...search under the ARTIST category, and you find 168 radio surveys for "Mr. Bojangles," and 30 surveys for "L.A. Freeway."  You can sort by chart position:  "Mr. Bojangles" was Top Ten in San Francisco, "L.A. Freeway" was NUMBER ONE in Sacramento, CA on two stations (KNDE and KROY) and was Top 10 in San Francisco and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Where I grew up (Northern California), Jerry Jeff actually had hits.

Anyway... here's a Live From Gilleys syndicated radio show of Jerry Jeff Walker & the Lost Gonzo band playing at Gilley's ("the worlds largest night club") back in 1985.  The vinyl was a bit rough, but I cleaned it up as best I could.  I've included a scan of the very inaccurate cue sheet, and the scarred and defaced record label.  Why write on the label AND attach a sticker?  Pick one or the other, not both.

You know we've been at this thing for 5 years?  6 years?  or is it more? or is it less? I'm sure The Boss will chide me for not knowing. Well...I wonder where the group of us rank as far as legendary blog sites go. Are we up there with the likes of Williard, Nargo, Big O, Burning Wood, Hear Rock City or Guitars 101? or are we down there with the blogs like, Toilet's I Have Known, Spewing Cock Shit, Pictures From My Yellowstone Vacation, The Correct Uses Of Shovels? Either way like some of the above mentioned blogs, we are at a disadvantage due to the fact we only post boots (well at least on this page.) As you are fully aware there are only so many bootleg recordings but all of us try seeking them out when requested. wacocrimatty you are one of the reasons I keep doing this, thanks as always for the great things you say about us. Another reason I do this is because of The Boss himself, even though I have never met him face to face I do speak with him about this time every year by phone and believe me this guy's passion for music has no limitations. So I am honored to be a part of what I consider one of the best blogs on the net, and as Mr. Hendrix said "I don't give a fuck if you boo as long as you boo in key" See Scans

Flac files of .wavs, includes a scan of a wrinkled cue sheet, and the disc label, which a prior owner has helpfully marked up in pen with Ms. Griffith's name, dotting the "i" with a very nice circle.  So it goes.

This version digitized Nov. 2017.  Updated September 2025 with some press coverage, and not one but TWO disc labels. See? I still care about you!

The BBC Transcription Service released this show as "In Concert #441," with one additional track ("Speed Of The Sound of Loneliness.")  Another version is available at Bigozine2.com with that track, but also adds "I Would Bring You Ireland."

The Westwood One version was bootlegged in 1994 as "Love Affairs In A Foreign Town" (Monada/OSA, NCI 016) Reportedly from "a well-worn LP" and "contains noticeable surface noise."

The Who / Radio City Music Hall 6/27/89, Westwood One edited version

The Who
"Tommy"
Westwood One Superstars In Concert #89-28
For broadcast the weekend of October 13-15, 1989

Recorded June 27, 1989 at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, NY.

Digitized from the 3-LP set.

The Who reunited in 1989 to commemorate their 25th Anniversary, and did a concert at New York City's Radio City Music Hall in support of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation and the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame.  The entire concert was broadcast by satellite, so there are numerous versions of this show in circulation.

Westwood One rebroadcast just the "Tommy" portion of the show later that year in October, and again in 1996 as Westwood One Superstars In Concert 96-44, adding "I Can't Explain" and "Substitute" to the "Tommy" tracks.   The is the LP version from '89.   Our old pal Steve Downes adds narration explaining the plot throughout the show.  This version is "pre-FM" so there's no added radio compression, and I declicked it to the best of my ability.

The vinyl was in great shape on this one, there were very few clicks or pops.  I went through it several times in Audacity and did my best to remove them.  Flac files of wavs.

Updated February 2026 with 300 dpi scans of all four disc labels and a low resolution scan of the cue sheet found on the Internet.  The concert dates have been tracked down and added to the text file.

Mama's Boys were unfamiliar to me and a pleasant surprise.  They're 80's melodic metal
and show their Irish roots by tossing a fiddle in on one song.

Y & T is introduced by famous San Francisco Bay Area rock promoter Bill Graham.
The venue ("San Francisco Civic Auditorium") was renamed the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
after his untimely death in 1992.  I tracked down an ad for the show and note they played both the San Francisco Civic (8,500 seats) and the San Jose Civic (3,000 seats) on consecutive nights, in spite of the venues being just 50 miles apart from each other.

George Taylor Morris was the deejay who helped promote the "listen to Pink Floyd's
Dark Side Of The Moon while watching "The Wizard Of Oz."  In 1981 he became the entertainment director for NBC's The Source, a rival syndicated radio show, so I'm not sure what's he's doing here.  Maybe he was between gigs?

The commercials:

Starburst track 12 is an imitation of Cyndi Lauper's musical style, with a burbling, percolating synthesizer line reminiscent of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," and continue the imitation with the singer's speaking in a thick Queens accent.

I originally thought one of the Budweiser ads was Dexy's Midnight Runners, but it turned out to be Oingo Boingo.

Also featured:  Promo spots by Daryl Hall, Meatloaf, and Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet.
