Deviant Art and Sleazegrinder

Killerpine at Deviant Art

I wanna hear Sinead O'Connor's post-retirement reggae album, hoping it's better than Chrissie Hynde's reggae album. At least you can rely on those two to say what they mean and say it mean. So tired of the After School Special theatrics of Kelly Clarkson and all those legions of tweenage Mousketeer turned angry pseudo-strippers.
And Sheryl Crow's watered down Tom Petty/Lenny Kravitz/Oasis shit. And yeah, even in this sleazy trashpunk underground, it's getting discouraging and tedious, as wave after wave of crashing bores in colorful leather coats keep showing up who play the sedulous ape to the Ramones and Johnny Thunders and Nikki Sixx. We don't need no more well-heeled Mama's Boy Fan Club El Presidente's buggin' us with their emo influenced badboy nerdpop.

The top 40 is all gangsta rap, geek pop, and new girls with old formulas. That ain't art, and I dunno why I waste so much energy talkin' 'bout 'em, besides this media juggernaut just pummels me with this garbage non-stop. Let's try to disregard all the corporate hos, Bush relatives, and manufactured spokesmodels of the current regime, and obsess about the past some more, shall we? Set the wayback for...

Super Excellent Audience @ 320

Wikipedia says:
Luna was a Dream Pop/Indie Pop band formed in 1991 by Dean Wareham after the breakup of Galaxie 500, with Stanley Demeski and Justin Harwood (Demeski formerly of The Feelies and Harwood formerly of New Zealand band The Chills). They announced plans to break up in 2004, and played their final concert at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 28, 2005.

The original line-up was expanded with the addition of guitarist Sean Eden for their second album, 1994's Bewitched. Lee Wall replaced Demeski on drums in time for 1997's Pup Tent, and Britta Phillips of Belltower (also known as the singing voice of animated character Jem) joined when bassist Justin Harwood departed in 2000. Phillips and Wareham eventually became romantically involved.

In 1991 after the end of Galaxie 500's US tour supporting the Cocteau Twins, Dean Wareham told his bandmates Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang that he was quitting the band. Dean then signed a demo deal with Elektra Records and recorded a number of tracks with Mercury Rev drummer Jimmy Chambers. Some of these recordings were later released on the Anesthesia single on No.6 Records in the US and Mint Tea in the UK under the name Dean Wareham.

Elektra's VP of A&R, Terry Tolkin, was suitably impressed and Dean signed a deal with Elektra, and started pulling together a band. He first contacted Justin Harwood whom Dean had met while Justin was playing with The Chills and they recruited drummer Byron Guthrie, the trio recorded some more demos (produced by Dave Fridmann) and played a couple of live dates augmented by Mercury Rev guitarist Grasshopper. Guthrie was then replaced by former Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski and this line up recorded the first album Lunapark, produced by Fred Maher and released by Elektra under the name Luna² to avoid confusion with a new-age musician who was already using the name "Luna" (later an agreement was reached which allowed the band to use the name Luna).

Shortly after the release of Lunapark, the band placed an advertisement in the Village Voice for a guitarist, and Canadian former drama student Sean Eden was recruited. The new four-piece went into the studio and recorded a number of cover versions that would become the Slide EP and then toured the US. In the summer of 1993 the band landed the prestigious slot supporting the reformed Velvet Underground on their European tour after which they set about recording their second album. Bewitched was recorded in New York City and co-produced by the band with Victor Van-Vugt. Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison played guitar on two tracks. The album was released in 1994.

In 1995 the band went into Sorcerer Sound studio in New York City with producer Pat McCarthy and engineer Mario Salvati to record their third album Penthouse. The album featured the legendary guitarist Tom Verlaine (Television) on the tracks Moon Palace and 23 Minutes in Brussels. The album was released in August 1995 to critical acclaim with Rolling Stone declaring it one of the essential albums of the 90s. The album featured a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's Bonnie and Clyde as a hidden track, the song featured Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab duetting with Dean Wareham. Bonnie and Clyde was released as a single in the UK and was named Melody Maker single of the week.

Just kidding. This was their last gig.

Profits soared to a record level for that quarter. Hey, Lyndon, you ought to host a night-time TV show next.)

Notes: On January 14, 1978, during the tour's final date at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, a disillusioned Rotten introduced the band's encore saying, "You'll get one number and one number only 'cause I'm a lazy bastard." That one number was a Stooges cover, "No Fun." In the closing lines, sneering at the audience, Rotten declared, "This is no fun, at all." After the performance Rotten addressed the audience directly—"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? Good night"—before throwing down his microphone and walking offstage.

He later observed, "I hated the whole scenario. It was a farce. I felt cheated. Sid was completely out of his brains—just a waste of space. Malcolm wouldn't speak to me. But then he would turn around and tell Paul and Steve that the tension was all my fault because I wouldn't agree to anything. It was all very bitter and confusing."

Patti Smith love life memoirs

Patti Smith recalls lost love in Just Kids
By RYAN McLENDON, Associated Press Writer

http://rapidshare.com/files/338456633/NPR.rar (National Public Radio sound clip)

"Just Kids" (Ecco, 304 pages, $27) by Patti Smith: "Just Kids," the new memoir by Patti Smith, recalls the life she shared with Robert Mapplethorpe.

While Smith sometimes veils her meaning in poetic flourishes, a touching tale of love and devotion — part-Sid and Nancy, part-Romeo and Juliet — shines through the semantic haze.

She portrays herself and Mapplethorpe as star-crossed lovers united and ultimately divided. From their modest beginnings in an apartment in Brooklyn, N.Y., Smith became a rock 'n' roll star, marrying poetry and music on the stage, while Mapplethorpe blossomed into an acclaimed and highly controversial photographer.

They met in the summer of 1967. Smith caught a bus to New York, where she planned to live with art school friends. But those friends had moved, leaving behind a young, curly haired Mapplethorpe.

Their paths crossed weeks later in Tompkins Square Park, and they ended up sharing a night on the streets of New York. An immediate bond was formed, and the pair took refuge in the attic of a friend's Brooklyn bungalow. They had a relationship rich with love — and a hunger for art — that lasted nearly a year.

Their romance burned quickly, and soon Mapplethorpe retreated into himself, dismayed by his growing sexual desire for men. By 1968, he had fled to San Francisco. When they met again in New York, he was involved in an intimate relationship with a man.

Mapplethorpe and Smith soon rekindled their relationship. They camped out at the notorious Chelsea Hotel among other artists and musicians like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. They held court at Max's Kansas City, the fabled haunt of Andy Warhol, and they struggled to find their place in the artist's totem. But after leaving the Chelsea, they severed their romantic ties, though their bond of friendship remained.

Smith, who had published several books of poetry, began putting her words to music at New York venues. Arista Records offered her a record deal, and Mapplethorpe took the iconic photo for Smith's first album, "Horses."

There's a gap in the book between the release of the album in 1975 and Mapplethorpe's death from AIDS in 1989. She dances over critical details of her marriage to Fred "Sonic" Smith, her two children and her later relationship with Mapplethorpe.

"Just Kids" is a touching recollection, but far too sympathetic to Mapplethorpe. Smith is quick to forgive his sexual indiscretions, and often dismisses his emotional reclusiveness as the price for loving an artist. She seems to struggle at times with how to portray Mapplethorpe warmly as well as critically.

Perhaps the duo didn't have as much time for each other after career and families, something Smith tacitly alludes to by not revealing many details about that period. But there are enough details about their life together to satisfy the reader, despite the omission.

Jason Pierce is as much a survivor as he is a visionary. From his time in the influential yet self-destructive Spacemen 3 with his one-time friend and toxic twin Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember, to the last 18 years as the driving force and only permanent member of the gospel-leaning space rock force that is Spiritualized, the man they call Spaceman — whose lyrics time and again consist of love, death, redemption, drugs, rock’n’roll, and of course, spirituality — has experienced everything he sings about first hand. And that includes death. Twice. After being stricken with near-fatal double pneumonia in 2005, which was so severe his girlfriend received grief counselling, Pierce made what can only be described as a miraculous comeback. While it was enough trauma to force any artist into retirement, Jason used his brush with death as inspiration for the sixth Spiritualized album, the self-explanatory Songs in A & E. His best work in 11 years, the album is not only the document of his survival but also the digest of all his musical styles to date, encapsulated with the interstellar flourishes J Spaceman has built his songbook around. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s float into space…

Mick Taylor: "Giddy Up" and "Bring it Down" (w/Jack Bruce)

It depends on who's asked, but most of us think Mick Taylor is a tremendously
overlooked guitar player. Just watching him on "Giddyup" confirms that to me:
look at what he's doing with that whammy bar. On the other hand, once the
camera gets off Jack Bruce, there's a great view of Mick's solo. And yes: the
Stones have treated him like dirt by ignoring him on future royalties.

New Jersey approves medical marijuana for chronically ill patients

On his final day, NJ Governor Corzine signs
medical marijuana law

Angela Della Santi, AP writer

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has signed legislation granting chronically ill patients legal access to marijuana. Corzine's office said the governor signed the bill late Monday, his last full day in office.

New Jersey is the 14th state to allow patients with diseases such as cancer, AIDS, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis to use marijuana to alleviate their pain and other symptoms. The legislation allows for dispensaries to be set up around the state where patients with prescriptions can access the drug.

Growing marijuana at home will remain illegal, as will driving while high.

Robin Trower - "Spellbound" London 1980

As much as I love Stevie Ray and his legacy, Robin Trower will always be the FIRST guy I heard who could really capture Jimi's sound.
It's the Univibe phase shifter and its effects.

This is from the London 1980 show; it's got some great close-ups of Robin's technique and fretboard work, plus that unmistakable saturating sound. You can also see how Robin got into the song; he's just self-hypnotized by what he's doing--and rightfully so (or soul).
Guess this answers the question about why some artists switch from a Les Paul to a Fender.

The Psychedelic Furs - Radio One Sessions Import Out Of Print @ 192 Kbps

I was fortunate enough to catch the first wave of punk when it hit. Never got to see the Sex Pistols but was lucky enough to meet and see (yes I did get their autographs) The Ramones (the originals) and there was a time when a local bar here was bringing in some of the first wavers. I managed to get Stiv Bators autograph. So these guys were considered "New Wave" but me and some friends always loved these guys. I thought having a sax player in the band was a great idea. So this here post is The Furs doing songs for Radio One.Of course you know the quality of this has got to be great. And I think The Boss is also a big fan of these guys. Sorry no covers for this.

Not bad for a guy who recently earned
his Ph.D. in astronomy.
He just happens to play guitar.

Procol Harum - Easter Island, NY, March 15, 1969

Majestically grand notes: Here's a vintage live recording from the original Procol Harum lineup, in 1969 (and probably the best sounding live Procol boot available from this era). This boot contains two New York shows,
but is known as Easter Island.

Procol Harum was one of the great pioneers of progressive rock, and their odd combination of classical themes and styles (provided by Brooker's melancholy vocals and Fisher's church-like organ) with the searing R&B-style guitar jams of Robin Trower remains unique.

Gary Brooker: vocals, piano
Matthew Fisher: organ
Robin Trower: guitar
David Knights: bass
B.J. Wilson: drums

Some interesting video notes: who plays a Gibson SG anymore, and why don't we hear more of those fat tube sounds today? The Boss just confirmed that's Robin Trower; sorry for the fuzzy video quality. And the late B.J. Wilson was a great rock drummer.

Sly & The Family Stone - Fillmore East, NY, Oct. 5, 1968 (Early & Late shows)

This is a Voodoo Boot Stomp Soul Resurrection of the Highest Kind! Here, the original link has been restored and transferred from the FBS, and two shake-your ASS-off! videos plus the early show as new features.

Special thanks to BlackPlanetMusic for the videos.

Mitch's View: In 1968, when Sly and the Family Stone hit the scene by way of San Francisco, their music was magically potent: an adrenalin rush of soul, rock, gospel, and volcanic R & B. They were more than racially blended: here was a collaboration of hip cats and strikingly sharp foxes.

The F.S. could blow your doors off with vocals that bounced off walls like Spiderman and a sense of groove that dug a new cellar in your house because your feet had pounded that hard. On the late gig, "Dance to the Music," starts with a slow tease by Sly on organ and enticing whispers. It's as energetic and beautiful as the studio version that shook the shingles of the roof. It's audio motivation in a righteous way!

This performance is as much a tribute to the power and energy of a movement that began in Motown--but I would credit the Temptations for this high voltage show. ("The Temps?") Hell, yes: go back and dig up "Ball of Confusion" and "Cloud Nine" and listen to the challenges and counter-points of their vocals alone--and you'll see some of the paternal heritage of Sly and the Family Stone. In his own right as well, Sly has been a heavy influence on everyone from Living Color to George Clinton's success with Parliament/Funkadelic as well as Prince.

Sadly, Sly had issues: personal and professional. Politely said, he could not keep his nose clean, and a 1971 Rolling Stone interview--or an attempt at such--by Timothy Crouse is as much a testimony as well as transcript of how much snow and blow had drifted into Sly's yard. The attempted comeback(s) never quite materialized; his manager admitted that there were two personalities controlling Sly's artistry and willpower.

Nevertheless: Bill Graham knew how to set up a show, and that's what Sly and the Family Stone could do. The next year, Woodstock showed the rest of the country that he and the band were a sight to behold and hear*.

(Forget the timer in the foreground; just GROOVE on the show! Oh yeah!!

"M'Lady," 1973.
No, that's not Larry on bass in this video, but that's okay--he's good too.
The audio quality outweighs the video. What's not easy is the guy
who just can not dance in the beginning--but maybe it maybe was an acid thing?
But he's digging the music, so it's accepted.
