| This is not the Reunion Arena. |
This show was originally a live satellite broadcast by Westwood One. The satellite version is in our archives, sourced from my master cassette. The concert was from an appearance a trade convention for Radio & Records magazine...that is, it was not a regular concert open to the general public through ticket sales.
The show was later syndicated as the 3-LP sets 88-10 and CO89-06. This version is from the 3-LP syndicated show CO89-06.
There has been an ongoing question here on VW. One of our reader (Hi, Rudolf!) notice that Discogs lists this show as "Recorded live at The Reunion Arena Dallas, Texas 4 March 1988."
I had assumed the show was the same as the satellite broadcast because the set list matched exactly. But assumptions aren't evidence, and Discogs might have been right... so I had to track down a copy and compare.
The Discogs entry is incorrect. Mellencamp did NOT play at the Reunion Arena that day. The songs are the same as on the satellite broadcast. The mix is pretty much the same, too.
If you've got the satellite version, you don't need this. On the other hand, digital storage is cheap, and you might as well have it for reference. Plus...commercials! And the fabulous Steve Downes!
Also: I am moving this comment from our reader, Rudolf Schmidt, into the post to increase visibility:
"This seems like a good time to introduce my John Mellencamp live bootlegs archive:
Inspired by livepetty.com, I tried to create a site where the average joe looking for JM live recordings can find the best (IMO) versions without getting into all the minutiae we do here. Of course, most of my stuff is just draftervoi's stuff but I managed to add a few things. Hopefully, it will prevent a few people from paying to download the same recordings from greedy bootleggers. I remember reading a comment by someone who was tickled pink because he had just bought a copy of Mellencamp's 4 July 1992 concert on "audiophile vinyl".
