Flac files of wavs.

Also....if anyone recognizes that first song, please leave a comment and I'll update the post.

16.  You're Wondering Now - the Specials - 1980-01-21

This tape was digitized by Hans Devente and posted in August 2014.
I normalized the volume and chaptered the songs.

Okay....I checked out a full Specials show dated January 21 1980 and the three tracks are the same as on this show.  My conclusion from that is that this isn't a real "gig," but a radio special compiling edited segments of earlier shows.

Mountain - Dreams Of Milk And Honey Live Canaan High School CT 12-23-69 @224

This is almost like trying to relearn how to ride a bike.  I have no idea why I've been so lazy. I always check in though. First off, Boss Goddamn I hope you're foot is getting better. Jeez I'll bet the rehab is worse then being subjected to a door less room where all that's piped in is Beyonce and Rhianna. How are you doing? What's the prognosis? When do you think you'll be able to play basketball again? One more thing a while back I got an official notice from the blog police about a Bruce post. I never posted it and from looking at our back pages the alleged post was never printed here. Do you think it was some Hamas site looking to get all four dollars and sixty-cents from my bank account in some unscrupulous way?  Anyway good to be back. Hope to hear from some of you. Let me know what your looking for, and if I can track it down I'll post it. As always see scans for details.

The broadcast was hosted by WBCN in Boston and was simulcast by Starfleet Blair.  Other stations that carried this show were WNEW (New York City) WQBK (Albany, NY), WCCC (Hartford, CN), WBRU (Providence RI) and WSYP (Philadelphia).  This tape was recorded from the WNEW broadcast.  So...we've got a WNEW station break and a WBCN deejay on the break before the encore.

This is a master recording of the broadcast.  The sound is average, dull on the high end, with some static and distortion here and there. Everything up to the second tape flip in Track 16 is from a low bias Maxell UD-90, everything after that is from an Ampex 20-20 low bias cassette. There's very little tape hiss. There's a tape flip break between songs 6 and 7, and in track 16, but no music is lost.  It's quite listenable, but it's not as perfect as the tapes I usually post.

There's a bootleg of this that incorrectly lists track 4 as "Borderline."  Another poster has put a copy of that up, down the thread here.  It's MP3, but it sounds better than this version...it's clearer, better highs and lows.

Anti-Flag - Live Hellfest, France 2013

Anti-Flag - Live Hellfest

Soundboard or Broadcast Source @320

Pittsburgh’s Anti-Flag play a brand of punk rock as gritty as their hometown. After forming in 1994, these boys took the punk scene by storm with their debut release, Die For The Government. With their intense live shows and punk-as-fuck records, Anti-Flag have not looked back. These Iron City rockers mesh ’77 streetpunk with a heavy dose of socially conscious lyrics. Their message is vehemently anti-fascist, anti-war, and anti-nationalist. They call for participation from both sexes and unity in the punk scene.

Making their debut at a local Pittsburgh radio station in 1993, Anti-Flag got together for the sake of responding to their disgust at religion, nationalism, and fascism. Justin Sane (vocals/guitar), Andy Flag (bass/vocals), and Pat Thetic (drums) bopped around their hometown much to the dismay of skinheads while recruiting a following who proudly wore torn-up upside-down flags as patches. In 1997, after releasing a handful of singles, opening for their idols the U.K. Subs, the Exploited, and the Circle Jerks, and briefly touring the East Coast -- which led to the departure of Andy Flag -- Die for the Government was released, and 20,000 copies, four bassists, and four North American tours later, Anti-Flag gained their reputation for recapturing the old-school ethics of punk: fast, loud, obnoxious, and anti-everything that ends with an "ism."

Steve Miller Special - VPRO Radio 1978, five different live sources...

This is another of Hans Devente's tapes.  I chaptered it to make it easier to navigate.  The show is a Dutch radio special.  I've presented the show as originally uploaded, with the musical intro (in Spanish) and all of the commentary (in Dutch).

The show has five different sources.  The first one is the lowest quality, both in sound (there's construction going on in the room).....and performance.  As Miller puts it, "I've been drinking Akvavit for two hours, somebody gimme a beer...."  In general, the sound is about  "B" FM radio broadcast...some hiss...too much talking...but I've never heard any of these performances before.

If anyone speaks Dutch and can figure out the other sources or years, please leave a note in the comments.

UPDATE!  Many thanks to Feelgood for helping identify the sources for this tape!  His information is added below, and I've updated the track listing here.

A lot of bands have stayed there in the years 60-70.
If they performed in the basement, they were allowed to stay for free.
A day before the concert at Concertgebouw, Amsterdam one of VPRO's reporters went to the Hotel Wiechman in Amsterdam to do an interview with Steve Miller. The hotel was in the middle of a renovation and reporter Wim Noordhoek found Steve Miller downstairs in the bar with the carpenters. Steve is practicing and screwing around while some guys are constructing a bar at the Hotel Weichman. Therefore, one could hear all kinds of noise on the background.

Stiff Little Fingers - Wasted Life {7'} and Bonus

From the Dave Sez sound archives!!

Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device/Wasted Life 1978 {7''}
Studio Recordings @ VBR

Stiff Little Fingers were formed in 1977 in Belfast, Ireland. Along with the likes of the Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Sham 69, Stranglers, et al – Stiff Little Fingers were at the forefront of the punk movement. They wrote initially about their own lives, growing up at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, in songs like "Suspect Device" and "Wasted Life". In November of '77, they released those two songs on their own Rigid Digits label, and sent a copy to BBC Radio One DJ John Peel, who started playing it every night.
More Bio

I could be a soldier
Go out there and fight to save this land
Be a people's soldier
Paramilitary gun in hand
I won't be no soldier
I won't take no orders from no-one
Stuff their fucking armies
Killing isn't my idea of fun

(Chorus)
They wanna waste my life
They wanna waste my time
They wanna waste my life
And they've stolen it away

I could be a hero
Live and die for their 'important' cause
A united nation
Or an independant state with laws
And rules and regulations
That merely cause disturbances and wars
That is what I've got now
All thanks to the freedom-seeking hordes

(Chorus)

I'm not gonna be taken in
They said if I don't join them I just can't win
I've heard that story many times before
And every time I threw it out the door

Still they come up to me
With a different name but same old face
I can see the connection
With another time and different place
They ain't blonde haired or blue eyed
But they think that they're the master race
They're nothing but blind facists
Brought up to hate and given lives to waste

Todd Rundgren & Utopia / Brown University Nov. 11. 1977 FM

Todd Rundgren & Utopia
Brown University
Providence, Rhode Island
November 11, 1977

Hans Devente digitized his FM recording of a Todd Rundgren 1977-11-11 show from a Dutch radio station in the Summer of 2014. There was already a circulating version of a tape recorded by Dan Lampinski from an American radio station. Hans' tape has better audio quailty, but the first song cuts in during the first chorus, the start is missing.

The two versions also seems to have different ambiance; Hans tape has slightly wider stereo separation (to my ears...).

I chaptered and normalized Hans' tracks and did some other minor editing (removed a few pops, made the between song edits less jarring by getting the volume levels closer to each).

I have set this up so you have several options for dealing with the problem with the first track:

1:  I've included the unedited Hans Devente tape version of Trapped, which cuts in after the song has started.
2:  I made a version of Trapped that edits together the Lampinski and Devente versions for a complete show using all of the better audio quality on the Devente tape.
3:  The unedited Lampinski version of Trapped, so you can do the edit yourself if you find my edit to be too jarring.  If you don't like it, do it yourself! :)
4:  The original American DJ intro from the Lampinski tape, to be included or discarded as you see fit. If you include it, you get a show introduced in English and with the show credits in Dutch.

Todd Rundgren: guitars, vocals
Roger Powell: keyboards, synths, vocals
Kasim Sulton: bass, vocals
John "Willie" Wilcox: drums, vocals

If you like this old radio broadcast, Cherry Red records has issued a great show from a year later, Todd Rundgren & Utopia Live At The Electric Ballroom 23rd October 1978.

If we get lucky, Cherry Red will put out an official release of the full version of this edited Brown University show.

Biohazard - Live Bizarre Festival

August 22, 1999
Soundboard (?) @ 320

Crushing it since 1987, Biohazard manages to unleash a sonic fury that few have ever captured though many have made pale attempts at imitation. The Brooklyn based band blend a metal, NYC/hip-hop, and angry punk mix perfectly, and sound as pissed off as possible. Biohazard came to this party to tell a story, and while that story may be a little too "out there" for some people...it's an exciting ride nonetheless.

This version was digitized by Hans Devente in June 2014 as two flac files. There was some clipping on the right channel as it ran a bit too "hot" for the levels he had set.  I used Audacity's Clipfix to repair the minor clipping, chaptered the songs, spliced the two sides together.

Deejays include (I think) Vin Scelsa, Meg Griffin, Richard Neer, Robin Sagon, and Pat Dawson.  If I've got any of them wrong, please let me know in the comments.

This was digitized by Hans Devente in June 2014 as two flac files.  I edited the files together but there's a tape flip in the middle of a song.  Parts of the digitization had some clipping due to input levels being set too high, so I ran Audacity's Ciip Repair on the file.  I normalized levels after fixing the clipping problem (which was mainly on the right channel) so that both channels sound roughly equal.Several of the tracks had short 1/2 second bits of silence between songs, sometimes cutting off a bit of the music.  I blended these back together as best as possible.

I was completely unfamiliar with Ms. Wilson's music, but I enjoyed it.  It's a mid-80's take on 1960s girl-group / Motown.  So occasionally a bit of 1980s shredding shows up on the guitar solos, but most of it sounds like 1966.

Sound quality is mostly excellent, with a few wobbles in the sound due to the age of the tape, but these are only noticeable if you've got headphones on. These are flac files  of wavs.
